Why does Mitt Romney continue to put up with Donald Trump?

(CNN) - What is wrong with Mitt Romney?
Here he finally makes it to the nomination after a bruising primary fight against all sorts of whacky, right-wing elements in the Republican Party: Rick Perry, Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich - you name it.
Four years after losing the race for the nomination, he finally secures the requisite number of delegates for his party's nomination for president of the United States. Sweet.
But what's one of the first things he does? He appears at a fund-raiser in Las Vegas with Donald Trump. Donald Trump. He of the curious hair and even curiouser ideas about the nation's priorities.
Donald Trump, who is still insisting Barack Obama's birth certificate is a phony. In a loud, annoying voice, he goes around claiming Obama is not qualified to be president because he wasn't born in this country.
No one is listening, Mr. Trump. Except Mitt Romney. If Romney wants to drive voters away, all he has to do is continue to indulge Trump’s lunatic ravings about the president's birth certificate.
There are real, serious problems in this country. The legitimacy of Obama's birth certificate isn't one of them. And for Romney to align himself with this gasbag with the funny hair is tantamount to wanting to destroy his candidacy before it even gets off the ground.
Except for contributing money, there is no way Trump helps Romney become the next president. And if Romney can't see that, well, I'd say the lad has some serious problems.

Mitt Romney needs all the support he can get and Donald Trump is raising a lot of money for him. After listening to Trump's interview with Wolf Blitzer yesterday, it is clear that Trump is whatever George Will called him and that Mitt Romney is simply a poor judge of character with whom he choses to associate. Romney has not choice but to pander to all the extremists and crazies in the Republican party which will cost him the election and cause him to wish he had never sought the office.
Money. money, money, .....................money!
Romney wants to get Trump's hairdresser's secret phone number.
Lets just hope it is for the money and support he can get from the old tea party people through Trump. We need to hope he is not thinking of Trump as a VP.
Because Mitt Romney has the worst taste in friends, and, is a terrible judge of character. Maybe it's just a bro-mance that hasn't gone public yet. At any rate, it reflects on Mitt rather badly and is perhaps a glimpse at how shallow he really is.
He's a pathetic money grubber. That's the reason. Maybe Donald will be his VP running mate. Then, all they would have to do to win is continue to convince people we can all be rich as long as only 1% of us are rich.
Becuz Trump has a bettor idea on how to deal with a 3rd world coutnry like china who undermines world resources for thier wants of an empire that is based on crippling u.s. with saturated low quality products ,watered down customs,and cheap port rates that sees shipping companies buying off senator murray and others ,while playing 1 port against another to get a bettor deal that sees the debt saddling u.s. communities that force us to close down our libraries early cuz the property taxes get raided to cover the bond payments for the flags of convenience infrastructure were forced to pay cuz u.s. govt doenst think china shipping and others have to pay
Romney's reluctance to disown Trump is a bad political calculus that targets the crazy know-nothing far right fringe of the American voters.This is once again a proof of Romney's lack of gut and leadership.The Obama folks are ordering more popcorn as the republican circus resumes with Trump as the major clown.Obama could not be luckier that at this critical point in the race we're talking about birtherism again.
I believe that Mr. Romney is preparing to deal with difficult people. I also believe he needs Mr. Trump as an ally. What is the saying, "keep your friends close and your enemies, closer". Smooth and smart, perhaps a lesson for us as well.

Romney likes "the wealthy businessman is my pal" cred, he likes the votes this maverick would have garnered, and he lilkes the Donald's ability to attract lots of media attention. Stop giving this story exposure. Many Americans come from families with only one parent a born citizen. George Romney was born in Mexico of parents who became naturalized when they moved to America. If Romney dad was born on foreign soil why not the uproar on Romney birth certificate? No uproar when Mccain ran and he was born in Panama Canal Zone! which as I remember is not a state. Enough. Remember jobs, economy, how we got in this mess and who is really responsible. Sort it out and ask those what their plans are to solve our problems.
Time to focus on truly main issues, ask questions of canidates on how they willl fix and get specifics. How will Romney fix economy? What wars will they get us into, lets see, Iran, Syria, and who knws what. Why, take care of those in America with monies spent overseas.
Donald Trump is something of an entertainer, a "character". There is a risk to the candidate in being identified with such a flamboyant personailty. On the downside, Donald might express opinions that hurt the candidate. On the upside, he might open doors to a higher level of contributions that help the candidate. A better question might be, what role, if any, will NYC Mayor Bloomberg play in this year's elections?
I think the premise of your question is wrong. "Put up with" means "accept contributions" in the parlance of elections. Trump has a voice and while not attractive to liberals, it may earn some money for the campaign. If we go after the supporters vice the candidates, we would be chasing ourselves through election day. I can think of left wing-nuts and right wing-nuts who ought be marginalized but they are NOT the story Jack. Get over it and stay focused on the issues of employment, economy, philosophy of Government, and our future Jack! Your ratings will suffer less if you leave Trump to the pundits.
Because unfortunately, there are many racists out there that have had their passions stirred over this birthed thing. Trump, by all indications is not a racist, but maybe worse. Trump is the CRR {Chief Rabble Rouser) sitting on the side lines encouraging and validating the racist’s beliefs spewing hearsay. Romney sees too many votes to put space between himself and the Donald.

Hi Jack, Romney and Trump claim to be successful but ignore being born into wealth and take credit for things they never did. Romney takes credit for saving the auto industry but it was Obama. When Obama released his birth certificate Trump took the bait saying, "Today I am very proud of myself because I have accomplished something that nobody else has been able to accomplish.” Two days later bin Laden was dead. Those two are like two peas in the same pod.

So, instead of doing an expose on why anyone should even care what someone like Donald Trump thinks about anything, Romney and CO. know the media will regurgitate the nonsense he spews because of its entertainment value, allowing average citizens to believe that what Trump thinks actually has merit when it most certainly does not. Romney is calculating that having Trump spewing non-stop about there being so called “questions” about Obama’s birth certificate only helps him because you people will continue to cover it, and, because average people will continuously see this, they will begin to think its truth. It’s sad.
Mitt doesn't want to make The Donald mad, or he might point out that Mitt's birth certificate is a forgery that doesn't list the hospital Mitt was born in, or have the signature of the doctor who delivered him, or a notary seal from 1947.
It looks a lot like Mitt was born in Mexico, like his father, and had a fake birth certificate created years later, perhaps when his father was governor of Michigan and had access to the vital records of the state.

My point is that most elected officials are FOR SALE to the highest bidder.....the rest don't usually get reelected.

Mitt Romney doesn't seem to have any strong passion for any position and therefore has flip flopped a lot. 1) Romney knows that their are many folks especially Evangelical preachers who convince their Congregations that President Obama is a non American Muslim and he does not want to disabuse them of their ignorance. There are emails flooding our mailboxes from people who blindly believe the outrageous things that come from their ultra conservative preachers.
2) he is weak and will agree with anyone to keep his (or their) support. This is why he goes along with outrageous ideas that come from the radical right.
3) he believes he can buy the general election just as he bought the Primaries, he believes in the power of money and he has no worries about prevailing He believes that enough Americans will believe the ads and pay special attention to the most far fetched. If something is repeated often, some people will forego common sense and believe it.
4) he really wants to be President and will put up with anyone especially if they offer more money.
Just once in my lifetime I'd like to see someone run for President who has some integrity and courage. Romney is a prime example of why people get turned off and don't vote. Trump is a joke and I only wish Wolfe would have hung up on him yesterday. Trump, Romney and the President are true dividers not uniters and we really need someone who can try and bring us together, unfortunately, neither candidate is trying to unite, just divide.

I recall an old expression which was used to describe someone with whom you held in low regard. You would simply say "He can't shine my shoes". With the Trump/Romney relationship it is apparent that this is not the case. Romney is head over heels in this "bromance" and Trump loves to shine in the spotlight.

Jack, you mean to honestly tell me that you have not noticed that lack of intellectual honesty and integrity coming from the Romney camp? Romney's whole campaign is based solely on 2 things, the voter's willingness to believe anything and the voter's mass amnesia of the Bush years. To that end, Romney will say or not say anything to win and according the recent polls, 45 percent of Americans are willing to follow the Payed Piper.
Romney wants an indirect connection to that portion of the electorate who foam at the mouth when they think about Obama. It is almost certain that Romney thinks Trump is a clown, but he is not going to reject Trump's position because he needs the Obama hater vote, also, he is not the kind of man who would take a stand on principle alone. If he looses the election, he and Trump may want to do a deal together, maybe they'll buy CNN and lay you off Jack.
Romney puts up with trump for the same reason obama puts up with the israeli lobby or the banksters on wall street to get their money. With the birther issue aside Trump is popular with union casino workers in las vegas, and trumps idea to put a 20% tariff on chinese imports is something that needs to be done to create jobs in the u.s. Trump is talking about serious issues like jobs and chinas unfair trade practices but the media is only interested in talking about obamas birth certificate.
Because he’s desperate and is grasping at straws. It also shows a complete lack of judgment, not inconsistent with his overall campaign strategy of trying to appear as someone he is not. At least when Biden tries to swallow his foot, you know he means what he is saying and the truth often hurts. But Romney is entirely out of his depth in this campaign, let alone the presidency.
I wonder why Trump wasn't concerned about George Bush's college credential, service record etc. He is a real "nut case" I can't believe anyone would listen to him, but some listen to Rush Limbaugh So I guess it takes all kinds. unfortunatly these people vote.

Unfortunately there is a portion of the voting public that is racist and they seem to forget that Obama is half white. I would dare say that a large percentage of birthers are of that ilk. Really inept staffing in the Romney campaign. Face it, the best pool of staffers are mostly talking heads for the various cable news networks, especially on the Republican side. Romney is also in the unfortunate position of having to run on a libertarian economic platform. There are a lot of really good big government solutions to deal with the housing crisis that he can never touch. As bad as Obama is on our economic challenges, Romney is worse on every point and must be to hold his base.
Mitt Romney has no convictions other then money, so The Donald suits him fine. The fact is that Romney has not shown any guts or backbone during this campaign. He is qualified to run a business, not this country.
He puts up with Trump because Trump despite all his bankruptcies still has lots of money and lots of friends. Who says money can't buy love?

Somebody should remind Mr. Trump that John McCain, whom he supported in 2008, was born in Panama (and thus ineligible to be president). Had McCain become president, Trump and his fellow "Birthers" would be doing everything in their power to keep this information from becoming common knowledge (at least as far as they were concerned).

Everyone is making a big deal out of what candidates are doing...in May. Why is Obama focusing on Bain? Why is Romney hanging out with Trump? I think it's simple: they are getting preliminary or embarassing stuff out of the way. In Romney's case he wants Trump's help but since Trump is so ridiculous, get it done now and count on the incredibly short memories of the electorate.

Everyone knows that Obama went to Indonesia when he was six and came back when he was eight. He had to have had a US passport. To get a US passport, one must present a birth certificate to the State Department, which they then verify with the county records office where it was issued. Not only that, in order for him to have been born in Kenya his mother would have to have been in Kenya, and she never was. How stupid can people be? Obama's citizenship was verified by the Federal bureaucracy before he was old enough to vote!

By just standing near Trump, Romney hopes to appeal to the right wing nuts of the party while. By not actually verbalizing an alliance with him and his beliefs, Romney thinks he is appealing to the center of the party. Romney continues to "put up with" Trump becuase he helps raise money and there is a certain segment of the electorate that likes Trump. This question swings both ways and I would suggest that there are far more questionable characters in The President's past and current circle of supporters than in Mr. Romney's circle of supporters. Also, I don't believe there is a question about the President's birthplace, but the real question is why there are so many inconsistencies about the President and how he has changed the story about his background to suit the situation or time in his life. Case in point: the recent story about how in the early 1990's he was working on a book and in the catalog it stated he was born in Kenya. Why? Romney will not distance himself from ANY of the aforementioned 'gas bags' because there is a sizeable contingency of right wing voters who consider President Obama 'other'...the evidence for this being that he is not 'christian' enough for the evangelicals nor is he 'tough' enough for the hawks, too restrictive on the 'free marketplace', too socialist, too 'this', not enough 'that'. It is clear that the GOP doesn't take the Nations business seriously enough to put the USA ahead of partisan politics. The GOP needs to realize that when you lose an election, the prevailing Party gets to steer the ship. If their policies fail, the citizens will turn the wheel over to the opposition. Because Mitt buys into the illusion that Donald is selling, and that is that Donald is a multi-Billionaire, he's not. Donald sued a author Timothey O'brian for writing that Donald was in fact only worth 150-250 million dollars. Donald's lawsuit was tossed out of court.
Donald Trump wants the End of the EPA that prevents him from making even more money than he could ever use in one life time, and Romney is desperate to cling to anyone who will speak for him. The American People will show the world what they are made of when they vote for Corporate Greed or the American people who keep this country running 24/7 who the GOP want to end Labor Unions and further cut benefits for the working class they dont seem to have time for.
Why is Trump insisting that Obama is not qualified to be president. whether Obama is born outside the United States or not, his mother is an american born US citizen and therefore her children are US citizen.
That's the simplest thing I think you have ever asked Jack. One word "VOTES", he needs all the votes he can get. It's a shame we only have two (major) parties in politics. It would be nice to have five (far right, moderate right, independent, moderate left and far left.) Although in a perfect world there would be no far right or left. Until the voters get that, we will never get past the partisan divide we find ourselves in.
