Why does Mitt Romney continue to put up with Donald Trump?

By CNN's Jack Cafferty:

(CNN) - What is wrong with Mitt Romney?

Here he finally makes it to the nomination after a bruising primary fight against all sorts of whacky, right-wing elements in the Republican Party: Rick Perry, Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich - you name it.

Four years after losing the race for the nomination, he finally secures the requisite number of delegates for his party's nomination for president of the United States. Sweet.

But what's one of the first things he does? He appears at a fund-raiser in Las Vegas with Donald Trump. Donald Trump. He of the curious hair and even curiouser ideas about the nation's priorities.

Donald Trump, who is still insisting Barack Obama's birth certificate is a phony. In a loud, annoying voice, he goes around claiming Obama is not qualified to be president because he wasn't born in this country.

No one is listening, Mr. Trump. Except Mitt Romney. If Romney wants to drive voters away, all he has to do is continue to indulge Trump’s lunatic ravings about the president's birth certificate.

There are real, serious problems in this country. The legitimacy of Obama's birth certificate isn't one of them. And for Romney to align himself with this gasbag with the funny hair is tantamount to wanting to destroy his candidacy before it even gets off the ground.

Except for contributing money, there is no way Trump helps Romney become the next president. And if Romney can't see that, well, I'd say the lad has some serious problems.

Here’s my question to you:Why does Mitt Romney continue to put up with Donald Trump?

Tune in to the Situation Room at 4pm to see if Jack reads your answer on air.

And, we love to know where you’re writing from, so please include your city and state with your comment.

Mitt Romney needs all the support he can get and Donald Trump is raising a lot of money for him. After listening to Trump's interview with Wolf Blitzer yesterday, it is clear that Trump is whatever George Will called him and that Mitt Romney is simply a poor judge of character with whom he choses to associate. Romney has not choice but to pander to all the extremists and crazies in the Republican party which will cost him the election and cause him to wish he had never sought the office.

Lets just hope it is for the money and support he can get from the old tea party people through Trump. We need to hope he is not thinking of Trump as a VP.

Because Mitt Romney has the worst taste in friends, and, is a terrible judge of character. Maybe it's just a bro-mance that hasn't gone public yet. At any rate, it reflects on Mitt rather badly and is perhaps a glimpse at how shallow he really is.

He's a pathetic money grubber. That's the reason. Maybe Donald will be his VP running mate. Then, all they would have to do to win is continue to convince people we can all be rich as long as only 1% of us are rich.

Becuz Trump has a bettor idea on how to deal with a 3rd world coutnry like china who undermines world resources for thier wants of an empire that is based on crippling u.s. with saturated low quality products ,watered down customs, and cheap port rates that sees shipping companies buying off senator murray and others ,while playing 1 port against another to get a bettor deal that sees the debt saddling u.s. communities that force us to close down our libraries early cuz the property taxes get raided to cover the bond payments for the flags of convenience infrastructure were forced to pay cuz u.s. govt doenst think china shipping and others have to pay

Romney's reluctance to disown Trump is a bad political calculus that targets the crazy know-nothing far right fringe of the American voters. This is once again a proof of Romney's lack of gut and leadership. The Obama folks are ordering more popcorn as the republican circus resumes with Trump as the major clown.Obama could not be luckier that at this critical point in the race we're talking about birtherism again.

I believe that Mr. Romney is preparing to deal with difficult people. I also believe he needs Mr. Trump as an ally. What is the saying, "keep your friends close and your enemies, closer". Smooth and smart, perhaps a lesson for us as well.

Romney likes "the wealthy businessman is my pal" cred, he likes the votes this maverick would have garnered, and he lilkes the Donald's ability to attract lots of media attention. If Trump spews outrageous lies it is Romney's chance to play calmer and wiser. Plus the Donald is quite nasty to those who mock or cross him and who needs that?!

Stop giving this story exposure. Many Americans come from families with only one parent a born citizen. George Romney was born in Mexico of parents who became naturalized when they moved to America. If Romney dad was born on foreign soil why not the uproar on Romney birth certificate? No uproar when Mccain ran and he was born in Panama Canal Zone! which as I remember is not a state. Enough. Remember jobs, economy, how we got in this mess and who is really responsible. Sort it out and ask those what their plans are to solve our problems.

Time to focus on truly main issues, ask questions of canidates on how they willl fix and get specifics. How will Romney fix economy? What wars will they get us into, lets see, Iran, Syria, and who knws what. Why, take care of those in America with monies spent overseas.

Donald Trump is something of an entertainer, a "character". There is a risk to the candidate in being identified with such a flamboyant personailty. On the downside, Donald might express opinions that hurt the candidate. On the upside, he might open doors to a higher level of contributions that help the candidate. A better question might be, what role, if any, will NYC Mayor Bloomberg play in this year's elections?

    May 30, 2012 at 1:26 pm |
  21. Chris from Florida

I think the premise of your question is wrong. "Put up with" means "accept contributions" in the parlance of elections. Trump has a voice and while not attractive to liberals, it may earn some money for the campaign. If we go after the supporters vice the candidates, we would be chasing ourselves through election day. I can think of left wing-nuts and right wing-nuts who ought be marginalized but they are NOT the story Jack. Get over it and stay focused on the issues of employment, economy, philosophy of Government, and our future Jack! Your ratings will suffer less if you leave Trump to the pundits.

Because unfortunately, there are many racists out there that have had their passions stirred over this birthed thing. Trump, by all indications is not a racist, but maybe worse. Trump is the CRR {Chief Rabble Rouser) sitting on the side lines encouraging and validating the racist’s beliefs spewing hearsay. Romney sees too many votes to put space between himself and the Donald.

Hi Jack, Romney and Trump claim to be successful but ignore being born into wealth and take credit for things they never did. Romney takes credit for saving the auto industry but it was Obama. When Obama released his birth certificate Trump took the bait saying, "Today I am very proud of myself because I have accomplished something that nobody else has been able to accomplish.” Two days later bin Laden was dead. Those two are like two peas in the same pod.

Reality, Donald Trump is the very kind of racist radical element that is dividing this country by fueling the Fringe Right into a frenzy that is quit frankly dangerous! He should be declared Mentally incompetent and someone should manage his business! Trump is a shining example of exactly what is wrong with the GOP and how dangerous they are! Just ask Wolf, yesterdays encounter with the Trumpester was magical! Trump should be labeled as a Bio Hazard and discarded with the rest of the body parts that don't work any more! Incinerated! Trump is the perfect ally for someone like Romney in this election cycle. Trump and Romney both know that US media doesn’t care about facts, or truth, or helping our nation understand the challenges we face. They care about entertainment value, attracting corporate money in the form of advertisers, and keeping their own jobs by doing everything they can to remain relevant to this system. So, instead of doing an expose on why anyone should even care what someone like Donald Trump thinks about anything, Romney and CO. know the media will regurgitate the nonsense he spews because of its entertainment value, allowing average citizens to believe that what Trump thinks actually has merit when it most certainly does not. Romney is calculating that having Trump spewing non-stop about there being so called “questions” about Obama’s birth certificate only helps him because you people will continue to cover it, and, because average people will continuously see this, they will begin to think its truth. It’s sad.

Mitt doesn't want to make The Donald mad, or he might point out that Mitt's birth certificate is a forgery that doesn't list the hospital Mitt was born in, or have the signature of the doctor who delivered him, or a notary seal from 1947.

It looks a lot like Mitt was born in Mexico, like his father, and had a fake birth certificate created years later, perhaps when his father was governor of Michigan and had access to the vital records of the state.

Jack: Mitt Romney puts up with Donald Trump, because he believes the Donald will help him win. Mitt is stupid. Mitt Romney would sell is soul to be president. Mitt will flip and flop on any issue to make those listening at the time vote for him. Being President of the United States is not a popularity contest, but rather it is a race to be the best leader. Mitt could not lead his way out of a wet paper bag with hole in it. President Obama ended the war in Iraq, President Obama reformed heath care, and President Obama got Osama bien Laden. Mitt's got "The Donald".

Because Mitt thinks if he takes every side of every issue that will win the election and he's trying to appeal to the percentage of the country that are birthers. What he does seem to get is that character counts. Mitt seems to feels that he's entitled to be President – I certainly hope not. America hasn't recovered from the damage the Bush years have done to our economy and sadly, Mitt one won't be much different.Parking money off shore just to avoid paying taxes isn't really what most Americans want their elected officials doing – I know I don't!

Mitt Romney doesn't seem to have any strong passion for any position and therefore has flip flopped a lot. Because he can't decide if he needs Trump or not or if Trump has become a liability of not, Romney just holds on simple because he doesn't know how he feels about Trump. Is this a look into what he may look like as President of the United states or as the leader of the free world?

    Four main reasons.

    1) Romney knows that their are many folks especially Evangelical preachers who convince their Congregations that President Obama is a non American Muslim and he does not want to disabuse them of their ignorance. There are emails flooding our mailboxes from people who blindly believe the outrageous things that come from their ultra conservative preachers.
    2) he is weak and will agree with anyone to keep his (or their) support. This is why he goes along with outrageous ideas that come from the radical right.
    3) he believes he can buy the general election just as he bought the Primaries, he believes in the power of money and he has no worries about prevailing He believes that enough Americans will believe the ads and pay special attention to the most far fetched. If something is repeated often, some people will forego common sense and believe it.
    4) he really wants to be President and will put up with anyone especially if they offer more money.

Romney wants to be president so badly...he is willing to do anything and everything to get there...even if it means putting up with crazies and lunatics of the Republican Party. All major decision about home forclosures, the motor industry, the paul ryan plan, forriegn policy have all been wrong , but he is running for office because of his business knowledge .If you can not run a state how will you run a entire country. bill clinton ran for president because he had a record to be proud of in arkansas. He is trying to tell us who he is ,please listen. religion should matter because mormons do not believe in the bible, so what what good book will they swear him into the white house with. I recall an old expression which was used to describe someone with whom you held in low regard. You would simply say "He can't shine my shoes". With the Trump/Romney relationship it is apparent that this is not the case. Romney is head over heels in this "bromance" and Trump loves to shine in the spotlight.

Romney and Trump have a lot in common. They have very inflated opinions of themselves, both think they can buy anything they want and neither has any connection to the common person or common sense, The difference in them is Trump says what he thinks no matter what people think of him and Romney is a spineless weasel that will put up with anyone or anything that he thinks will get him a vote.

Why does Mitt Romney continue to put up with Donald Trump ?
To be perfectly honest – that IS a Damn Good Question that just about everybody would like answered. The "birther" thing Again ?? WoW ! I guess since the Donald's Show is over with now, he's on another rampage. I can now see why this race is going to be close. With the "Trumpmeister" 1/2 way in charge, he going to end up hurting Romney. Amazing, isn't it ? Pathetic, is more like it. Romney doesn't need the Donald, period. If the truth be known, those "celebrities" that has been on his show for the last couple of years, (especially this yr) will most likely Vote Democrat. They are mostly from either N.Y. or Ca. – – and Both of those states most likely goes Democrat, when the number 270 is involved. (electoral # ) Romney can handle it himself, Donald !! (without Your Help) Romney can win with all of Obama's (negative) Issues – his pastor for 20 yrs / religion / jim ayers / acorn / community organizer / his mother / his dad / joe the plumber / & the List Goes ON.
    Vote Democrat – 2012

I don't know why Mitt Romney puts up with Donald Trump, but I really wonder why Wolf Blitzer wastes good airtime on this self-promoting, shoot-from-the-hip, Rush Limbaugh-wannabee. I prefer to listen to thoughtful and intelligent discourse aimed at finding solutions to real world problems, something Donald Trump is neither capable of nor interested in.

Jack, you mean to honestly tell me that you have not noticed that lack of intellectual honesty and integrity coming from the Romney camp? Romney's whole campaign is based solely on 2 things, the voter's willingness to believe anything and the voter's mass amnesia of the Bush years. To that end, Romney will say or not say anything to win and according the recent polls, 45 percent of Americans are willing to follow the Payed Piper.

Romney wants an indirect connection to that portion of the electorate who foam at the mouth when they think about Obama. It is almost certain that Romney thinks Trump is a clown, but he is not going to reject Trump's position because he needs the Obama hater vote, also, he is not the kind of man who would take a stand on principle alone. If he looses the election, he and Trump may want to do a deal together, maybe they'll buy CNN and lay you off Jack.

Romney puts up with trump for the same reason obama puts up with the israeli lobby or the banksters on wall street to get their money. With the birther issue aside Trump is popular with union casino workers in las vegas, and trumps idea to put a 20% tariff on chinese imports is something that needs to be done to create jobs in the u.s. Trump is talking about serious issues like jobs and chinas unfair trade practices but the media is only interested in talking about obamas birth certificate.

Because he’s desperate and is grasping at straws. It also shows a complete lack of judgment, not inconsistent with his overall campaign strategy of trying to appear as someone he is not. At least when Biden tries to swallow his foot, you know he means what he is saying and the truth often hurts. But Romney is entirely out of his depth in this campaign, let alone the presidency.

Unfortunately there is a portion of the voting public that is racist and they seem to forget that Obama is half white. I would dare say that a large percentage of birthers are of that ilk. The Donald's sad repeat performance of last year's antics is enough to send votes Romney's way, even though Trump made a celebration speech about making the President show his birth certificate at that time. Sadly the afore metioned voters can't bear the thought of a (half) black President and they have no idea that they themselves are halfwits.

Really inept staffing in the Romney campaign. Face it, the best pool of staffers are mostly talking heads for the various cable news networks, especially on the Republican side. Romney is also in the unfortunate position of having to run on a libertarian economic platform. There are a lot of really good big government solutions to deal with the housing crisis that he can never touch. As bad as Obama is on our economic challenges, Romney is worse on every point and must be to hold his base.

Why does Mitt Romney continue to put up with Donald Trump? Three reasons: (1) Trump has a lot of money, (2) Lots of people pay attention to what Trump says, (3) Romney doesn't care about what's true any more than Trump does, and he's not about to let Trump's idiocy get in the way of (1) or (2).

Why doesn't he stand up to the lunatic fringe of his own party? Why doesn't he offer a solid economic plan other than 'Let's return to the Bush years'? Why does he flip easier than a coin? He has nothing to run on except hatred of Obama. If he wins the W.H. he'll become president of the rich, by the rich, for the rich. He needs them to get elected. Trump is one of his own. Donald is a double edged sword. Romney needs time in the spotlight and the Donald can give him that and a few fund raising dinners. The cost is looking like a fool standing next to a man who will say the most outrageous things for attention. Time to drop the clown or atleast distance himself from Donald. At least this keeps the Obama team busy instead of trying to start a class warfare with the Bain capital front.

You know the phrase, "There is no such thing as bad publicity"? It applies here. Ever since Romney won the nomination weeks ago the media has been all over Obama, hardly any Romney in sight. Attaching yourself to Donald Trump is a sure fire way to get yourself back into the lime light, and CNN is lapping it up.

It's sad, but true: Mitt Romney would sell his soul to the devil to reach that magic number: 50.1 percent of the vote. Romney has only one goal: He wants his place in history and he'll get there any way he can. I can't imagine a less deserving candidate!

Why does the media put up with Donald Trump?! How does Syria and unemployment get less attention than the fact that Trump is saying something outrageous. He is an attention seeking entrepreneur who makes a lot of money being in the public eye and doing and saying outrageous things. The media fails us when it panders to what he wants and does not keep the discussion focused on the real issues. Anyone can say something crazy on Twitter, it only becomes news when CNN reports it, so how about you ignore the gossip and focus on reality.

Donald Trump is a great source of income for Mitt Romney, and Mitt Romney needs that money in order for him to run a very successful campaign. He has to Jack. Mitt Romney has a very difficult job to do. He has to somehow keep the radical right wing, christian right, tea party whack job conservatives happy and excited about his candidacy while trying to appear to be not that way himself. That is going to be difficult. I am glad I am not him. He also has to keep Donald Trump happy because Donald Trump is an egotistical, narcissistic man who has delusions of grandeur and has the money to try to make the delusions happen (notice I said try, he would never be able to). If Mitt makes Trump angry, Trump may ran an independent candidacy and split the Republican vote. Mitt has an incredibly tough job this election!

Romney is desperate for money..bottom line. The fact he has yet to denounce Trump's continued ranting against Obama's birth certificate adds to his desperation and makes Romney look like he has egg on face. If the GOP is gonna hold the president responsible for Bill Maher, then Obama needs to hold Romney responsible for Trump. On a side note to Mr Blitzer, you're calling out Trump on the birther situation made my whole day. We need more people like you to put wind-bags like him in their place.

Everyone is making a big deal out of what candidates are doing...in May. Why is Obama focusing on Bain? Why is Romney hanging out with Trump? I think it's simple: they are getting preliminary or embarassing stuff out of the way. In Romney's case he wants Trump's help but since Trump is so ridiculous, get it done now and count on the incredibly short memories of the electorate.

The mistake is being made not by Romney, but by the media in assuming that this actually means anything. It doesn't. Come November all people will remember is that Trump is crazy, and Romney will have been able to run millions of dollars worth of extra attack ads.

Romney is no better, as long as he wins he doesn't care how he wins.. But hey, what does a fifteen year old girl know?

Because he is a self-centered, self-aggrandizing, selfish, greedy tool of big money. He has sold what little he had of a soul to "people' like Cheyney, Rove, Scott Walker, and their poisonous anti-American ilk. Trump is just more of the same, and Romney would do anything, absolutely anything to get to the Oval office.

It's a purely cynical move, totally unprincipled. Romney has shown he will bend over, without hesitation, for a dollar or a vote, without any regard to who or where it comes from. If racism (out of others' mouths) gets you a few votes, fine. If telling lies over & over again works, fine. If pretending to agree with the most outlandish wing nuts works, that's great. Homophobia? No problem, throw your spokesman under a bus. He's proven himself to be devoid of character and completely unworthy of being president of the United States. Donald Trump is a joke, Mitt Romney is a shamelessly brown-nosing automaton.

Because Mitt Romney, as stated above, will do ANYTHING to be president. He will make every promise, pander to every base, and take every donation in order to fulfill this goal. I'm not sure what exactly he wants to do with that power if/when he gets it, but I personally don't think it's going to help anyone but himself and his Republican million/billionaire buddies.

I guess he puts up with it the same reason Obama puts up with the likes of Bill Maher. Obama refuses to repudiate the comments of Bill Maher so why should Romney do the same with Trump? Bill Maher donated a million dollars to Obama's campaign and I'm sure Trump will donate to Romneys. Maher and Trump are both comedians so whats the problem? Maybe Obama should set a precedent for the campaign and return Maher's donation, then the Democrats would really have an arguement. At this point they dont, they are grasping at straws.

Donald Trump is a successful businessman, as is Mitt Romney. While they might not see eye to eye on several major political issues, they both agree about how to create jobs and stimulate a better economy.

Further, Jack, if you find all the rehashing of the birthing issue such a waste of time, stop covering it. Doesn't you (and the media) understand that all you do is fuel the fire? Forget it, stop dwelling on the topic, and move on! The media has said far more words about it than Trump and Romney put together.

Romney's presidential ambitions are just like his Bain ambitions. He said he only needs 50.1% to win. He doesn't care how he does it, only that he succeeds – even if that means catering to the creepiest, most idiotic groups across the country. He's made himself look cowardly in the process.

This is an easy one jack, publicity. Right now there is a lull in the campaign, the primaries are in effect over, the convention is still a ways off and Donald Trump offers a way for Romney to stay on the lips of every reporter in the country. Obama has the presidency so he naturally gets attention, in order for Romney to also get airtime he could be talking about the issues that are facing the country or he can throw up a bunch of fluff. If he is talking about the issues then he runs into the possibility that people would grow tired of hearing him and thus become less effective in the fall. So fluff it is, and who is better at talking about nothing yet still getting attention then Donald Trump.

I dont think anyone except a few liberals think that questioniong whether Obama was born in this country is really a big deal. Trump has the support of quite a good number of conservatives. He has many good ideas on how to deal with this countries problems. Mitt Romney would be even more foolish to turn his back on the positive qualities that Trump has to offer. Tucson, AZ – Mitt Romney is the kind of person who seeks acceptance so much that he cannot reject support from anyone no matter how stupid that supporter is. Everyone knows that Obama went to Indonesia when he was six and came back when he was eight. He had to have had a US passport. To get a US passport, one must present a birth certificate to the State Department, which they then verify with the county records office where it was issued. Not only that, in order for him to have been born in Kenya his mother would have to have been in Kenya, and she never was. How stupid can people be? Obama's citizenship was verified by the Federal bureaucracy before he was old enough to vote!

By just standing near Trump, Romney hopes to appeal to the right wing nuts of the party while. By not actually verbalizing an alliance with him and his beliefs, Romney thinks he is appealing to the center of the party. Romney continues to "put up with" Trump becuase he helps raise money and there is a certain segment of the electorate that likes Trump. This question swings both ways and I would suggest that there are far more questionable characters in The President's past and current circle of supporters than in Mr. Romney's circle of supporters. Also, I don't believe there is a question about the President's birthplace, but the real question is why there are so many inconsistencies about the President and how he has changed the story about his background to suit the situation or time in his life. Case in point: the recent story about how in the early 1990's he was working on a book and in the catalog it stated he was born in Kenya. Why? Becuase at the time he thought it would be a "better story" and sell more books. It goes to character–can we really trust what we are being told today with such inconsistencies in the past?

Romney will not distance himself from ANY of the aforementioned 'gas bags' because there is a sizeable contingency of right wing voters who consider President Obama 'other'...the evidence for this being that he is not 'christian' enough for the evangelicals nor is he 'tough' enough for the hawks, too restrictive on the 'free marketplace', too socialist, too 'this', not enough 'that'. It is clear that the GOP doesn't take the Nations business seriously enough to put the USA ahead of partisan politics. The GOP needs to realize that when you lose an election, the prevailing Party gets to steer the ship. If their policies fail, the citizens will turn the wheel over to the opposition. Petty simple...just like the founders planned.

Why wouldn't Romney appear with Trump?
Trump is the pander of the moment. Because Romney has no core convictions, he will not exclude anyone who is pro-Romney. This is an easy coupling for Romney the narcissist.

The answer is evident, Mitt Romney is a Gutless whimp, Not someone I would want to be my President.

Because Mitt buys into the illusion that Donald is selling, and that is that Donald is a multi-Billionaire, he's not. Donald sued a author Timothey O'brian for writing that Donald was in fact only worth 150-250 million dollars. Donald's lawsuit was tossed out of court.

Donald Trump wants the End of the EPA that prevents him from making even more money than he could ever use in one life time, and Romney is desperate to cling to anyone who will speak for him. The American People will show the world what they are made of when they vote for Corporate Greed or the American people who keep this country running 24/7 who the GOP want to end Labor Unions and further cut benefits for the working class they dont seem to have time for.

Why is Trump insisting that Obama is not qualified to be president. whether Obama is born outside the United States or not, his mother is an american born US citizen and therefore her children are US citizen.

That's the simplest thing I think you have ever asked Jack. One word "VOTES", he needs all the votes he can get. It's a shame we only have two (major) parties in politics. It would be nice to have five (far right, moderate right, independent, moderate left and far left.) Although in a perfect world there would be no far right or left. Until the voters get that, we will never get past the partisan divide we find ourselves in.

Mitt had no ball to say NO to " low class , funny hair business man like Trump looking for publicity " . CNN has better issues to discuss than talking about " Trump – Rozie -Octomum ..." –

It's all about the money; is this such a hard thing to figure out? Romney panders for votes and will say whatever it takes to get them (as well as the money). People who still doubt Obama's birth certificate need to be given a blunt force to the head for being so ignorant. Enough said. What do we expect from someone (like Romney) who shows at every town complementing the trees and saying exactly what the crowd wants to hear as though he's in a "Making a Speech 101" class. He's a phoney who shelters his wealth in the Caymens; not Presidential and not leadership material.

Two of a kind. They're both so righteous because of their ill-gotten money. We've already seen enough of greed and corruption but if this guy gets in this country is toast.

"Dog bites man is NOT news". Man bites dog is news. Trump says the most outlandish things. The media tries to rationalize with him and he gets his moment of fame. Romney tries to get mileage from Trump. God save the country if people elect a person with Romney's mentality as President.

Why does obama accept campaign donations from Bill Maher who criticizes women all the time, and then turn around and make a speech about the republicans having a war against women?

Can't have it both ways. Has obama ever said he doesn't like what Maher does? NO
