Illegal aliens leaving U.S., returning to Mexico for better life?

FROM CNN's Jack Cafferty:

In case you needed it, here's yet another sign of just how bad the economy is:
[cnn-photo-caption image=http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2011/images/08/03/art.mexican.jpg caption=""]
Illegal aliens are leaving the United States and returning to Mexico in search of a better life.

You heard that right. One Mexican official tells the Sacramento Bee that Mexico has "become a middle class country" where it's now easier to buy homes on credit, get higher education and find a job."

Not so here in the U.S. where the employment picture remains grim. Just today came announcements from Cisco and Goldman Sachs that they're cutting thousands of jobs.

Plus - a report from payroll processor ADP shows that although the private sector added jobs in July, growth is below what's needed for a steady recovery.

Meanwhile - As we wait for the monthly jobs report Friday, consider this: Mexico's unemployment rate is 4.9%... compared to 9.2% in the U.S. You do the math.

It's estimated that about 300,000 illegal aliens have left California alone since 2008.

Experts say the weaker U.S. economy along with rising deportations and tougher border enforcement means fewer illegal aliens. But - there have also been significant improvements in Mexico's society.

Its economy is growing at 4-5% and, according to the UN, Mexico's average standard of living - which includes things like health, education and per capita income - is higher than in Russia, China and India.

Turns out Mexicans might just have better luck of achieving the American Dream south of the border.

Here’s my question to you: What does it say that illegal aliens are leaving the U.S. and returning to Mexico in search of a better life?

Interested to know which ones made it on air?

Can you imagine truckloads of middle class Americans sneaking into Mexico for a better life? It may be the only way to save the middle class of our nation.

Richard in Malvern, Pennsylvania:
Jack, it says that things are looking up! More jobs for Americans, fewer drugs and murders, and maybe this will have a positive effect on border states. Politicians won't do anything to protect our borders, so the slumping economy will do their job. How ironic.

Dave in Orlando:
It says that we are officially a 3rd world country. We have been driven into the ground by special interests, philandering, pandering, bribe-taking lawmakers, a do-nothing president good only at making speeches, and a top court populated largely by people intent on revoking the U.S. charter. Even illegal aliens are jumping ship.

Gerald on Facebook writes:
No work, no health care, no education, might as well go back. Now, where do the rest of us go?

George in Pennsylvania:
I just went to Sears to buy a Wet Vac. I found it was made in Mexico. Maybe they've got something there.

Parah Salin:
Ain't 'free trade' great? Waiter, another round of cat food! Any chance in the next election we'll get what we vote for?

Tim in Colorado:
It says that they are tired of the Situation Room.

Take me with you, amigos!

I bet if most Americans had someplace to go for " a better life", based on our economy and political system, we would be considered illegal immigrants.

Some are going to say that it shows how bad our economy is. I disagree. I think it shows how bad Mexicos economy is. Their economy is so bad that traditionally their surplus labor could find it's way here and it would all work out. Now, there are so many Mexicans fleeing Mexico that not even the US can absorb the volume so Mexicans are returning as there is nothing here for them.

Illegal aliens leaving USA? Fingers and toes crossed. Of course they wouldn't be here if our Immigration Laws were enforced and America were permitted the same autonomy as all other countries, save Israel

That makes perfect sense since jobs in this country moved to Mexico. Apparently the illegals didn't get the memo. Image Mexico having a problem with undocumented Americans looking for work and taking nationals jobs. And, American's don't speak Spanish.

It just may be they're leaving after realizing they may be forced to be legal human beings, pay taxes, contribute to this country, pay your way, be a TRUE American.

    Heaven forbid !!

Can't we ship all the Tea Partiers over the Rio Grande and keep the Mexicans here? They can 'fix' it there and life will be better here.

I think it means that they have more sense than most Americans do. Job seekers need to be mobile, and those Americans trapped in over-priced homes are no longer mobile. How much time and effort did clueless politicians spend attempting to get more and more Americans in homes, only to find that they couldn't afford them? Or that they would no longer be mobile enough to pursue jobs? Another broken promise by American central planners.

Leave it to you, Jack, to find the one news story that demonstrates the US going down the tubes best of all. I say. good riddens to all immigrants finding "better" lives elsewhere including that arrogant billionaire who moved to China just recently
This should make both the left and right happy: obviously wealth is being redistributed and we're getting rid of all those illegals at the same time – there is a God!

It means that they know where they stand in their own country (drug cartels, corrupt law enforcement and other problems notwithstanding), that their future in "the land of plenty" is uncertain and after all is said and done, there's no place like home. It also means that Sheriff Joe Arpaio will soon have more time on his hands than he'll know what to do with.

Jack i think you are confusing a vacation with going home to a better life. These people travel back and forth across the border like you or i go to the grocery store. The border is a minor inconvenience to them. Despite all the problems America has it is still 100 times better then Mexico. People get home sick once in a while Jack and that is all your seeing.

We should have followed the jobs. Our business people and politicians have seen to it that America's best days wont be coming. Maybe after a couple of centuries as a third rate Banana Republic we can reemerge, or at least attain the status of an England or France.

It says two things. First of all, many states have passed strict immigration laws since the Federal Government refused to do their duty and pass one themselves and some illegals are scared of arrest and deportation. Secondly, it says that the U.S. economy is in a sad state and there are fewer and fewer jobs. Neither of these situations are good since the supreme court will probably do what they do and overturn the state laws and the U.S. economy is not good for those of us who live here.

Mexico is still devastatingly poor, and any commenter who spouts off that they're not coming over because we are in such sorry shape as a country, needs to have their heads examined. There is just no comparison in the US, where poor means you can't afford cable or designer tennis shoes, to large parts of Mexico where there is no food. I suspect it has more to do with the border states passing so many laws to let them know that they are not welcome.

    August 3, 2011 at 2:23 pm |
  24. Rick McDaniel

    I doubt it.

We hear those claims, but states are still passing illegal immigrant legislation, in all parts of this country, which clearly indicates the problem is still serious, it is still costing the states a ton of money, and the probability is........telling us that the illegals are leaving......is really a lie, to pacify the unrest over the problem.

Illegal immigration.......is just that.....illegal......but our government is doing nothing about it, and they are doing everything possible to stop the states from taking action.

That means, our government is failing to enforce our laws, and denying the states the right to make their own laws.

We used to throw politicians like that, out of office.

It says that ILLEGAL aliens believe in the same things that many LEGAL aliens in this Country believe in, and that is why many LEGAL aliens are returning to Europe.

I am planning on moving to Europe after I turn the LEGAL age of retirement, whenever that is going to be. We have botched up everything else in this Country, so we now have to wait until we are at the LEGAL age of retirement to see if we can retire LEGALLY.

it says the new laws in AZ,GA,AL and other states are starting to work. I hope so! That in itself will help the bring down the american debt.

I worked in Mexico for almost two years and just to get the visa I had to submit to a background check, a criminal record check and pass an AIDS test!
All we ask is for them to come through our front door!

In Mexico, you break one of their laws you go to jail or pay off someone to try and stay out. Here we give the free food, Housing, an Education and Bank of America gives them a credit card! Is this a great country or what??!

Jack, I'm all for immigration, just come in the front door like my grant grandfather did!

Speaking as an American who crossed the other border (Canadian) for a better life, I don't blame people for leaving. Ideology has turn the US into a country where nothing gets done. We have a government that since the 2010 election hasn't offered a single jobs bill, turned a routine debt deal into pure insanity, hasn't done anything to fix crumbling infrastructure or a crumbling middle class. Since I left life has been better and better, so I understand why people would do the same.

Jack: It means they are leaving the USA, because they love the violence of Northern Mexico. It really means they are afraid of being deported by states that have past new immigration laws, or it means they are moving to a more friendly states, who have common sense laws. It means they can go and come as they please, because the United States is going to layoff 3000 to 5000 border patrol personnel. Congress loves illegal immigrants.

I don't think that's true, tghey are leaving because of hostility and uncertain economic prospects in the U.S. There are costs to live illegally or with uncertain prospects and Mexico is near enough that they likely feel more comfortable being poor with family around than face poverty here alone.

When the hiring starts again they will come back over. No houses being built by the thousands so why not go back home and rest and go the slower pace of life? Cost of living is probably much cheaper down there. Wonder if our workers can go down and make some money?

    Dear Jack,

The best way to solve the problem of illegals sneaking in from third world nations is to make the U.S itself a third world nation. The Cheney-Bush team went a long way in accomplishing that; and, apparently, the Obama era has closed the deal.

tampa, fl they are still coming back once a month to pick up their social security checks and for the free health care. a glass can only hold so much water, and there are 5 people for every open job right now in america, so why not go where they not only speak the language and are citizens of, but ALL of our jobs went courtesy of our politicians.

This means that they have done what they came to do, which is, get just about everything for free, wave their Mexican flag, and send all the money they stole or worked for tax free, back to Mexico. Don't worry though, if and when our economy gets better, the illegal alien invaders will be back with the blessings of our silly, stupid and corrupt government. Last time I checked there were over 15 million illegals running around in America and our government only recently came up with a really clever way to get rid of them - make the economy so bad they'll leave of their own volition. After all, America's on its way to third world status so why should they stick around.

Well, it is not surprising since American Greetings, BellSouth,Coca-Cola,Evenflo,Goodrich,Kraft foods,PepsiCo,Rayovac,Samsonite and Xerox (and too many more to mention) all have factories in Mexico, it seems there would be jobs available there. Illegal immigration is a major source of the American wage being driven down to unlivable, and now it seems it is even too low for the Mexican worker. Perhaps we should be doing reverse immigration except for the fact that Mexico has a strong illegal immigration policy and it is enforced (just ask the Central Americans trying to come through).

Media hype is what it says, when NY looks like CA and most all non-corporate jobs are dominated by illegal labor, mostly Mexican. They didn’t all start out as low wage jobs but this country’s lust for cheap, slave labor has changed all that – with a helping hand from the Obama administration. The problem is so blatant and on such a large scale but we never hear a mention of it in the media. Why believe what they say now? You cannot have it both ways. You cannot be pro illegal immigration and serious about putting America back to work. In response to my concerns in a letter to my congress Rep. Yvette Clark – she’s opposed to passing partisan agendas. I call it unemployment!

My comment will be probably be the same as most commentators. This fact suggests that the good old USA is no longer the land of plenty. The unemployed citizens much remain and suffer. Now is a good time to reform laws to prevent their return when the good times return. First step should be to eliminate the destructive influence of the Teabaggers policies.

Aside from the obvious "shame on us" state of affairs which would cause economic conditions in Mexico to be better than in the USofA, I would venture an opinion: good news.

If this question is a bash on our economics, it is unnecessary. We are already too aware of the results of reaganism and bushisml.

If this question is a bash on our immigration policy, it is unnessary. We are already too aware of th results of reaganism and bushism.

It says one of two things 1) Enough American companies have set up shop in Mexico so it is possible for illegals to make a life at home and not have to worry about whatever agency is looking for them. or 2) The American dream is being found out to be the American nightmare and that it's just not worth the hassle to stay there illegally.

This is a true testimony as to how bad the economy is really getting.

In a way, these guys are really lucky; at least they have a place to go. Most of the poor US citizens and other folks in the unemployment line have nowhere to go and can’t find a good or even poor job here in the land of milk and honey.

The average citizen is stuck in limbo listening to the politicians in DC explain how each new farcical idea they generate will solve all the problems.

When our own economy is slumping and our unemployment rate is high, this puts pressure on industries that have been hiring illegal aliens.
The jobs "nobody wants" are now being sought. For those illegal aliens that have to go back to Mexico, I wish them well. Looking on the bright side, those who were taking advantage of the illegal aliens will now have to pay at least minimum wage to their workers and contribute to our entitlement programs.

Well I wouldn't call it a better life Jack. It is only time when our and the remaining "good" Mexican Army work together to clean up not only the border mess but the drug an human traficing mess that is going on now daily. Many Mexicans I know are moving here to the U.S to be safe and not back to Mexico. The better life are in the eyes of the beholder. The Mexicans with education and a good deal of money are moving to Texas for one. As for our boarder inforcement is a joke picking up the bus boy or the yard workers and send them back when we seem to not to be able to catch the drug and sex slave lords. It is just plane sad and good Mexicans are getting a bad wrap.

The quality of life in America is deteriorating for more Americans.

A term "kicking the can down the road" kept popping up in the debt ceiling debates.

This is not the only "can" that I see being kicked down the road. There are so very many cans being kicked that I cannot count all of them.

This is not the proper way to deal with problems and is why the numbers swimming south across the Rio Grande are going to increase. Many of these problems were being postponed when I was in college.

What an indictment of the action of our federal government!

America has been the life blood for these Illegals for years. The realilty is Mexico unemployment rate is about 4% were the US rate is 9 +, and I mean +. More power to them to leave to seek a better life in their country.. Now what do we do with the other 12 Million illegals still here.. Considering our weak enconomy, maybe these folks will get the message and LEAVE.. This is a fear the Democrats Leadership is afraid of, they need their votes to give Obama a chance in 2012. the Liberal Democrats want to change US laws to accomidate illegals in sanctuary cities, provide State and Gov funding to support illegals still here in the US. Like the US has enough to support this madness. Our own US Gov sueing states who pass laws against illegals..

the Last time I look, The US is suppose to be a nation of LAWs not a propiertor for illegals to have more legal rights then US Citizens.

Time for them to leave or get to the back of the line legally..

Simple, and the same will be true with India and China, this is where the American manufacturing jobs have gone. Hence, this is where the middle class will start to grow. Isn't this what corporations have been striving for for decades, new middle classes to purge, and they are doing a fine job of building these middle classes in other countries? America's middle class is about dried up.

We had a shift in the Reagan years where we began to base our economy on consumerism because of the policies he enacted that lopsidedly benefited corporations, well eventually when the jobs are gone somewhere else there are no longer middle class jobs here thus no money to consume anything.

Unions have been fighting this for many many years, yet haven't got the PR experts the corporations do.

It tells me that the only way to solve the illegal immigration problem is to make the U.S's economy worse then any other country. To any foreigner who is reading this -including me-, we can't help but get the giggles at the fact that americans have been whining on aliens entering they're country illegally. But now that your economy is in the toilet, you may have inadvertandly found the holy grail answer to the illegal alien issue, one that makes the phrase "the cure is worse then the problem" come true.

It says the U.S. needs more jobs so people can make more money to buy more things to create more jobs so more people can make more money to buy more things, etc. The government cannot create jobs. It's the manufacturing sector that needs to create jobs. We cannot be a country with nothing but service industries. The way to create more manufacturing jobs here is to stop importing goods that are manufactured overseas not only by foreign countries but by American companies who have moved their manufacturing out of this country in search of cheaper labor and higher profits.

I say great! Never did understand the concept of "illegal" aliens having a right to free education, medical care, and whatever else they can con the U.S. out of with their phony IDs. What part of "illegal" don't we understand! If a U.S. citizen commits fraud he/she is subject to criminal prosecution, loss of job, life ruined, jail time etc. (Are you listening Bernie). We, in our infinite wisdom, want to put the "illegals" on the fast tract to citizenship as a reward for being here "illegally" for all those faithful years. Somehow they get the benefit of cutting in line in front of those seeking citizenship thru legal means. Let Sarah Palin and the Donald lead all the illegal aliens back to Mexico to show their leadership skills. Then they can both come back and throw their hats in the ring together as running mates! In the meantime Obama and his Democratic Posse can unionize all the jobs the "illegals" held and our unemployment problem will be solved! Who says we can't work together.

I'm not 'certain' where your "info" is coming from but there are a few simple facts you should be aware of:
Illegal aliens are certainly not tracked coming in and neither is our law on such administered. So I doubt they're being counted leaving, if they are why aren't they arrested for being here in the 1st place?
"@" least interrogated and held temporarily until it is determined their not guilty of any crimes while they were here, and that they didn't have any kids that are now citizens.

Don't say we need to vote in new leadership....because the only thing we get are new faces. Don't tell us to write our congressman because they do what they please and what their cronies are doing. Unless every person in this country changes their mind and heart, nothing here or in the world will change. Wouldn't it be grand to start caring about each other and being the model for the rest of the world. Better life, because egotistical leaders and CEO's are not interested in the "community;" their only interest is in the self.

If I understood correctly, only the small, and I mean less than 200 employees, small companies are hiring, because large companies control our agenda driven politicians and have no interest in helping America remain strong. For example, just look at recent news of GE and other companies moving production overseas.

If our self-absorbed leaders in Congress would realize we will not have an America to believe-in, unless they quickly place a mandate that all production must be within our borders.

As for the American dream......oh yeah! that, it was sold in 1913 for a nice shiny new bank, you see people weren't using "the American dream" so they figure trade it in for counterfeit money, why not, I mean what could POSSIBLY go wrong? ™

Time to add Mexico to the list of retirement destinations. Friends of mine recently bought a place in Panama. According to them, their Social Security checks + retirement accounts buy more there than here.

The reason Mexicans are going back to to their home country to work is because our American corporations are building plants and creating more jobs in Mexico than they are in the U.S. They have taken the U.S. production jobs to Mexico, China, India, Thailand. No reason for illegals to come here anymore. We are giving them jobs and paying them well to stay in their own country. It's works better than a fence to keep them out.

Yeah, but ... the poverty rate in the US is around 21% and in Mexico it is over 43% so an employment rate in Mexico that is much lower than the US means what? Not much. The lower unemployment rate sounds like Mexico is doing better but doesn't really say much. Wait until we hit a poverty rate closer to Mexico's and then we can talk.

Well, what do you know... something good coming from the U. S. economic problems. The only long term solution to the illegal immigrants from Mexico is for the Mexican economy to provide enough jobs for the Mexican people. Strange that this should occur under these circumstances but I'll take good news where ever I can find it.

Sorry Jack. I don't believe a word of it. I lived in Mexico for 5 years and returned to the US last January because it was just too depressing. Somebody is lying with statistics. By the way, when I left, I was awed by the corruption and stupidity of the Mexican Government. Then we had the so called debt crisis here in the US. OK, I take it back. Looking at just the government, Mexico IS better.

I will tell you what it means. It means the Republicans once again are being controlled by an oligarchy which is duping their less – educated brethren into going against the President, the President who wants to protect Labor, who has already given incentives to small business to hire Americans. They are drinking Tea but Lord knows what it is spiked with – because all common sense is gone. What do these lower class and middle class Tea Partiers think will happen when there are no more funds to carry on the functions of government? When the bridges fall and the projects fail to get started because they have blocked them all? What do they think will happen to the airlines when they won't even pass the FAA Bill? Do they know the Tea Party plans to cut Medicare and weaken Labor every chance they get?
What kind of life are these people creating for themselves? The Koch brothers will be just fine but not the tea party folks.

Jack-It means that things are so bad in America that we should send all the illegal aliens home and open up the estimated eight million American jobs currently held by these illegals.
It means that soon millions of American will be sneaking over the border into Mexico looking for work, and I am sure the Mexicans will welcome us, give our kids an education, and we can all press dos por Inglese.

Central Americans and South Americans are Americans too. And don't forget that 1/3 of the U.S. was Mexico until we took it from them. It's good for North Americans if they can achieve the "American" dream. We lost an opportunity during the Bush years when he virtually ignored Central and South America. We still have an opportunity to improve relations with them.

Your hate of poor Mexicans is appalling. You hate them because they come, you hate them because they leave. The truth is that Mexico is the 11th economy in the world these days, the truth is that for Mexico has ALWAYS BEEN A TRAGEDY to see their poor leave for the United States. The truth is that if they had hadthe opportunity there, and now they have it, they would have never come to the United States, where they have been mistreated, despised, and hated just because they wanted to improve their lives. It's about time Mexicans stay in their country to make it better. Mexican progress has been unheralded in the USA for decades, because it feels good when we think we are the best, now it is impossible to cover the sun with one finger.

    Hi Jack...
It is unfortunate that you have so many "facts" wrong about Mexico, America and the undocumented worker. Bosses in America and in Mexico, including drug and political, are the ones always benefiting. The statistics and tone employed by your commentary seem to elaborate the lies perpetuated by those who benefit from worker infighting. The American and Mexican workers are losing wealth and purchasing power. All while the rich get richer and continue to exploit the rest. Please utilize more appropriate ways when speaking about an individual, "illegal" categorizes people as criminals. Also, it is caucasian whites who are flocking to Mexico.

Gee Jack, there is no mystery here. Illegals have for years been paid "under the table" in cash...paying no taxes and getting their medical care, etc. for free...even though they're illegals. Many have lived in squalor, sending half their "cash" to relatives, making their lives easier. This has been going on forever...ever since I was a kid growing up in CA. Now, all the American cash has shored up the Mexican economy. As US jobs decline and big business continue to "off shore" their businesses and not pay any taxes or are subsidized by our government e.g. Ag. it's more attractive to "go home". I guess that's one way to enforce our immigration laws.

    Hello Jack,

Regarding your report, 'Illegal aliens leaving U.S., returning to Mexico for better life?'
I was surprised to learn that every illegal alien is assumed to be Mexican, are there any illegal aliens heading back to Ireland, England, Canada or Poland? I happen to personally know there are European illegals here in the US, many are my friends.

Not sure how this data is amassed but surely not every illegal alien is from Mexico. I believe it is dangerous when the term illegal alien is synonymous with Mexico, kind of like Gillette and razor blades.

Tucson, AZ – This means that the United 'States Congress continues to make a botch of the US economy. Make no mistake – the House and its Speaker, not the President, have Constitutional control of , and authority over, ALL domestic taxing, borrowing, and spending, so there is no sense pointing at the White House for things House and Senate Republicans have done Who would have guessed that the Republicans would solve the illegal immigration problem by causing a depression? Where did these guys learn economics, from comic books? This Congress was elected to create jobs and has done nothing to create them but has caused the loss of many others. While the Mexicans may be leaving the USA, in my town foreigners still come here by the droves to work on the yachts of the very wealthy Americans. Yes, you guessed it, these yachts are crewed in a great majority by foreigners from all over the world and at very good wages. Less than 5% of crew onboard these yachts are American citizens so you guessed it again, these wealthy US yacht owners have very few US citizens as their crew working for them on their luxury yachts. Why? Because the loop holes in our maritime regulatory system and Customs & Border Protection permit the wealthy owners to flag their yachts in foreign corporations allowing them to hire anyone they choose. In addition quite often these crew are from countries who have national health so the yacht owners do not have to provide health insurance for their crew either. I would place a bet that these yacht owners are probably either republican or tea party voters. There is definitely something wrong with this picture…..

Yea! I think that is one solution to the our debt problem! If you are illegally in the country then you should have NO rights and should go back to your own country. The fact that they are volunarily going home is a plus for lowering all the entitlements going to illegals. If you are illegal that means you are not paying taxes, SS, health premiums, etc.. I for one say great!

Are you kidding me, do you really think America cares if immigrants go back to their country thrive after they have been in America for years making good money sending it back to Mexico all while they lived tax free? I know that is a run on sentence but how could I shorten it with so many facts? Please America, we are intelligent enough surely to see this.

Understandable! U.S. companies are outsourcing jobs and industries to China and India. There are more American jobs available in China and India than in America. It used to be a privilege to come to the U.S. but now it's just an option. I think it is pretty clear now that outsourcing is killing the US. Government officials need to end this tragic practice. The only way to rebuild the economy is with JOBS yet more jobs are being sent abroad. Greedy US CEOs will continue to outsource the U.S. to death if left unchecked. The "as long as I am getting rich" mentality of US CEOs who support outsourcing is the poison that is slowly killing this nation. What a shame!

For 2 1/2 years, I was in disbelief that Americans would vote for an inexperienced, know little, do less person for president. Now he proves us all wrong by purposely, single-handedly destroying America just to get rid of all the illegal immigrants that his party has coveted to get the Hispanic vote. I am really glad to see that he has finally achieved something benficial for the American people. Maybe, soon, he will be able to get us some foreign aid from such a wonderful country in which to live. (or die)

This is AMAZING to consider.... I'm almost speechless. Our immigration problem could solve itself at this rate. It's sad that our nation is willing to forfeit it's legacy in the international society for this new elitist, separatist, super right wing idealism that IS NOT the essence of AMERICA! We have become a nation of Cannibals in every possible way. I wish the illegal aliens well!

Jack, it says that if something isn't done about the continuous slide in the earning power of the middle class, then revenue will continue to also slide, even as the number of the needy and their needs rise. The war on the middle class must end, or eventually all the spending cuts in the world won't be enough. Our middle class was once the envy of the world, and it has been picked apart by every means imaginable, in order to redistribute more of the wealth to the top few. 80% of all the growth in income over the last 30 years has gone to the top 1%. If that keeps up, we have neo-feudalism, not a democracy, and the post mortem on this country will closely parallel the fable about the goose who laid the golden eggs. We should demand Economic Patriotism in DC, starting with the abrogation of NAFTA, and moving on from there. It shouldn't be too much to ask."

Not only are the Mexicans returning to Mexico, but tens of thousands of US citizens are coming to Mexico to retire because we simply cannot afford to do so in the US. Here we have cheap fresh food and prescription drugs, beautiful housing with low property taxes, excellent services, and affordable medical care. Will your doctor make a chouse call in the middle of the night for $35? And in most of the country, the cartels are not a significant issue. Come on down, the weather is fantastic!

Mexican workers were often migrants that crossed back and forth across the border. As the seasonal crops and labor contracts came in, so did the Mexicans. It's good that they have a place that they can go back to that provides healthcare, housing, education and other benefits. Todays politicians in the U.S. regard such things as entitlements with little esteem. I don't want to stay here either.

After listening to the news, I am sick to my stomach. Our Congress went on a 5 week vacation and left business hanging. What kind of people run this country? And illegal aliens returning to Mexico! Maybe the illegals will run into our Congressmen & women on vacation in Mexico and they can tell them to return home and finish their job. Can we fire Congress and start over again with non-political people. I bet the average American could do a better job running this country. Mexico is doing well because we sent them so many of our jobs-it's past time to repatriate these jobs, tax the the rich (they only create jobs in other countries), and close the tax loop holes. Poor President Obama can't get anything done because the Congress puts a wall up every time he tries to do something. Kinda makes me think that Congress wants to see the downfall of the greatest nation on earth. Remember this on election day'

There is no such thing as the American Dream. People all over the world are just trying their best to have a good life for themselves and their families. We need to start thinking globally and not nationally. My experience with Americans is that they can't think that way. It's all about them. Now look at the mess you're in.

Why would any illegal stay here, when those of us who are citizens feel as if they are no longer being represented by our elected legislators? I am so disgusted and disappointed by our members of Congress who seem to be fixated on the money they can collect from lobbyists and special interest groups that "we, the people" are hardly worth a second glance. How about them giving up a 5 week loss of income like the FAA workers? How about our Congressmen giving up not only some of their pay, but also have to work a real 5-day week, weekends if necessary with perhaps a 2 week vacation yearly, but also be required to have exactly the same medical insurance, pension and retirement benefits (and loss of franking privileges) that the rest of us have to look forward to? It's time they learned how the majority of the people live.

Jack, I so don't feel badly over people leaving CA. I live here in CA and as far as I have always believed, it might be about time that unless you have lived here in America correctly then get the heck out! I have had friends who have moved to other countries to live and they have time limits before they can work, get Gov help, and many other things, we should be doing that. New Zealand for example has a 1yr living as a resident, before anything can happen. WE have the Statue of Liberty, but I think that again LET's TAKE CARE OF AMERICAN's before helping others

Well, Jack, what do you know? We actually have one of our major economic headaches showing improvement without any drama from Washington.

All levity aside, I truly understand our bleak U.S. economic situation that has brought this about.......but I have been desperately poor for many years, and didn't harbor some of the nasty attitudes that our nation of immigrants has had against these poor folks who came here to find a better life...........not all Mexican immigrants are drug runners...........as our Border Patrols have demonstrated so aptly over the last few weeks.

Looks like all those politicians who planned use deportation of illegal aliens as a campaign platform will have to find another group of folks to attack that can't fight back..........hmmm, could it be those of us on disability? ANYtHING to avoid talking about the economy...

It means we did a great job building Mexico's economy. Mexico exported it's poor and uneducated to Mexico for generations and gave them information on how to work the system. In addition, it was and is a great source of revenue for Mexico. Several years ago I heard that it was somewhere around the 3 largest source – just below oil. More recently, I have heard that it is about 18th. Who knew that exporting your poor could be such a good source of revenue for a country. To the credit of Hispanic workers, they're hard workers which is one of the reasons that U.S. employers prefer them. They show up and work hard. You've seen a great many of them on stimulus funded road projects which means a lot of the stimulus money went to Mexico.

Many Hispanics do not even know that what they are doing is wrong; they think it's the way things are done in the U.S. because that's what they've been told. One very fine gentleman I know was given an insurance allotment through work which he didn't use. When asked about why he hadn't used it, he said that the government pays for his and his family's medical bills – probably at hospital emergency rooms. This is a great guy and never even considered that what he was doing was wrong.

I guess the republicans and tea party got what they wanted–illegals out of THEIR country. All they had to do was simply bring the US economy to the brink of diaster-with an unessary war -Iraq and not agreeing to raise the debt ceiling.
Let those illegals go do that back-breaking work in their own country. Americans certainly want to work in the agricultural fields for min wage

    August 3, 2011 at 5:41 pm |
  277. Terry

Jack. I suppose the republicans will take credit for the lack of jobs in America as reason for the illegals going south too. They want all the credit for what is going right, but none of the responsibility for what they have run in the ditch. They continue to harp on the 35% tax rate on big business, when in fact last year I paid more in taxes that did Exxon. With all the loopholes the republicans keep for their big business friends, any American that paid a nickle in after decutions tax paid more than most all if not all big business. Why did not all the tax breaks for the rich & powerfull not create jobs during the last administration, instead or our losing 600,000+ jobs per month? What the republicans are doing may not be illegal, but it surely is immoral!

    Hi jack,

very good question jack. we are a asian family living here for the past 7 years, But now we are getting the feeling is life would be much better off in our country than here. The answer to your question is this country is not leading in a good direction that makes everybody think to be here or fled to where they came from.

The first thing it tells me is the cartels are winning. With so many American Dollars and [tax payer provided] guns going towards their drug enterprises, it only seems logical that they will keep winning. Even with a tightened border they keep a foothold on our shores with Mexicans growing pot in our own parks; but the money still goes South.

Funny part of it all, built in Mexico, sold in U.S., profit goes offshore not to ever be taxed! Why do we continue to give tax breaks to them???
We still have all the service jobs here but untill we once again become a producing nation rather than a comsumer and service nation we will NEVER see enough good paying jobs to sustain our economy!!!

Here in SW Florida not only mexicans are leaving but at least 4 in 10 Brazil natives have left since 2009,at one point there was over 43 brazilian churches some with over 300 members and today there is about 8 churches left and the bigger one with no more than 60 members. Brazilian Restaurants and bakeries are now part of history. I think that the number of 12 million illegal immigrants have now drop to no more than 9 million.
