Fearful that Obama's administration is quietly planning to introduce tough new restrictions on gun ownership and worried that the recession will trigger a crime wave, Americans are scrambling to stock up on guns and ammunition. (PHOTO CREDIT: JEWEL SAMAD/AFP/GETTY IMAGES)
FROM CNN's Jack Cafferty:
A majority of gun owners think Pres. Obama wants to ban gun sales.
A new Gallup poll shows 55 percent of those who own a gun, 53 percent who have a gun in the household, and 41 percent of all Americans believe he will attempt to ban the sale of guns while he is president.
This concern is greater among Republicans and people living in the South and Midwest than among Democrats or those living on either coast.
It also helps explain the sharp increases in sales of guns and ammunition. There are reports that U.S. bullet-makers are working around the clock and still can't keep up with the demand for ammunition. Shooting ranges and gun dealers say they've never seen such shortages.
However, President Obama has never said - as a candidate or as president - that he intends to push for a ban of gun sales. The president has said that he believes in the Second Amendment and that "lawful gun owners have nothing to fear." In May, he signed a law allowing people to carry loaded guns in national parks.
Nonetheless, gun rights advocates point to Mr. Obama's record as a state legislator and U.S. senator where he "voted for the most stringent forms of gun control."
They also surely remember that famous time during the campaign when the president spoke about small town people who are bitter and "cling to guns or religion."
This is an issue that speaks to millions of Americans. The U.S. is already the most heavily armed country in the world - with about 90 guns for every 100 citizens.
Here’s my question to you: Why are so many Americans worried President Obama will try to ban gun sales?
Interested to know which ones made it on air?
Sylvia writes:
Americans are not worried about Obama taking their guns. It is the gun dealers and Republicans who start the rumors so they can sell more guns. And it’s working.
Colin writes:
So more people buy guns so crime goes up so more people need to buy more guns...and our taxes go up as law enforcement tries to keep the people with guns away from each other. Do we live in a civilized country or a shooting gallery?
Jim writes:
Why am I worried? For the same reason I'm worried he will take over the banks and auto companies. Oh wait, he's already done that!
Lola writes:
First: Congress would have to ban guns, not the president. Second: It will never happen. This is just another sign of white fear (I'm white, by the way) about no longer being the majority in the country. And it's not only disturbing but also disgusting.
Lynn from Missouri writes:
Maybe it's because deep down they know they should be. Fear is a funny thing.
Nico from Carbondale, Illinois writes:
It isn't so much that they are worried Pres. Obama will get rid of guns, its more of a "We have a Democrat for president, must mean our guns will shortly no longer be available." This is a simple stereotype that always has been, and always will be in the American political game.
Tim from Texas writes:
Because the folks on Fox or Rush Limbaugh or Sarah Palin tell them what to think and they think it. It's that 'rugged individualism' of the oxymoronic ditto heads that lets them believe things that have no basis in fact or actuality.
Stan from Farmington, New Mexico writes:
The only thing America manufactures anymore are guns, bullets and bad cars. I don't see how Obama could possibly ban guns and put that many more people working in the U.S. out of their jobs.

The Second Amendment protects us from the power of government in D.C.
Obama wants unconditional power!!
To get he must ban guns!!
Because history has shown when liberals like Obama and Pelosi are in charge guns are on the chopping blocks! He wants to limit am radio stations content and replace it with liberal content. Is that any indication to you? Jack wake up this is not the change we were looking for!
Jack, they're worried because he voted for a gun ban bill while Senator from the State of Illinois. They fail to research the issue or they'd learn that the reason why he voted for the ban was because they had proposed that gun sales be allowed to minors. It was an addition to the final bill that he could not support and neither would I if given the chance. Obama realizes full well that the right to bear arms is one of the most coveted rights Americans have and that t hey would defend that right to the bitter end.. It would be political suicide for any politician to attempt to ban our weapons other than assault weapons, which I believe should be banned from the average joe.
as you said jack, president obama has necer said anything about banning guns of law abiding citizens.i don't object to people owning guns but only if they have a license and know how to nuse them. i don't believe anyone except for the military or law enforcement agencies should have autonmatic weapons, they are designed for only 1 purpose ,to kill
Try bringing a gun into Canada. You may be suprised at what happens at the boarder. You probably won't have your gun back until you leave the country.
Then look at your crime rates compared to ours.
Americans seem to be gun and litigation crazy.
The gun buying panic goes back to the days of the Clinton administration which did try to ban firearms. Now the rumor mill is making the assumption that any Democratic administration is out to get rid of guns and ammunition. It would be great for Detroit if an NRA equivalent group could get a rumor going that President Obama has a secret agenda to ban the sale of new cars and trucks.
People are stupid? or maybe it's because that's what they have been told by the people who want to sell guns
Easy question, Jack: America may be losing ground monetarily, your manufacturing base has been sent overseas, the Chinese pretty much OWN you at this point, but By God, when it comes to murder rates among industrialized countries, you're still #1, baby! USA! USA!
Why not worry. How often do politicians go back on their word?
The reason so many conservatives are worried is because they don't want to have their little toys taken from them. Maybe they do need a "time-out".
President Obama may say that he believes in the Second Amendment and that "lawful gun owners have nothing to fear," but he also said that we needed to pass the stimulus package or unemployment would go as high as 8%. Seeing that unemployment is rapidly approaching 10% with no decrease in sight, you can understand why, as a gun owner, I'm concerned about my Second Amendment rights.
Because Americans are basically idiots?
Guns should be pulled off completely no country in the world has so much gun violence like we do. The second amendment was inteded to arm militias and not evey fool or redneck.
Jack–
Honestly, I believe that racism and fear of diversity are at the bottom of this issue. President Obama's election has brought out incipient racism–especially among gun owners. I hear it and see it in my area of the country every day. It is a knee-jerk reaction to change.
Because to many Americans listen to the one sided rhetoric of fear from the NRA, and to many Americans don't know how to use their TV clicker and change channels away from Fox News in order to get an objective view of the world.
Because we know Obama is a kook !
Jame J
WI
Because they are misinformed idiots. Simple as that.
Ah, the echos of campaign speaches past. It looks like people's memories aren't that bad after all. Remember that old saying: "listen to me now but believe me later."
The 2nd Amendment was created so the citizens of the United States would have a means to protect themselves against their government (an idea that was in the forefront of the Founding Father's minds, given the Revolution against the British Crown). A result of the Amendment has been the right of citizens to protect themselves against other citizens, but that was not the reason the Amendment was written. According to the 2nd Amendment, the entire citizen body is to act as a militia, to counteract the government's soldiers, just in case, in the off-chance our government becomes corrupt, abusive, and/or unconstitutional, the American populace will have a means to dislodge them from power. Whenever a dictator comes to power, one of their first acts is always to take away the firearms of the people. We've seen it happen in Iran, where the Green Revolution was left at the mercy of the Islamic Republic this past summer (which didn't go very well for them), and we've seen it happen in Nazi Germany. Heinrich Himmler, for one, once made a very telling statement in which he said "Germans who wish to use firearms should join the SS or SA". Have we not heard similar statements from the left in this country? Granted, the United States military is far from a criminal organization, like the SS and SA were, but countless liberals have said "Americans who want to use firearms should join the military". The Democrats want to circumvent the Constitution and leave the people at the mercy of their government, which is absolutely reprehensible and totally unjustifiable. The Founding Fathers knew that the government, regardless of their intentions, would eventually try to take away the people's firearms, and had enough foresight to include self defense as a basic right of the people. We may have more faith in the system than the Founding Fathers did, but they saw firsthand how easy it was for a government to abuse its powers and wanted to safeguard the citizen body from such a thing ever happening again.
Here's another scenario for you... if, God forbid, our country was ever invaded by a foreign enemy, and our military was destroyed, the people MUST have the ability to protect their neighborhoods, homes and families from the invaders. No matter how unlikely, or laughable, the scenario may sound, it is a scenario and the right to self defense is fundamental.
Easy one Jack, they're ignorant.
Stupid is as stupid does Jack.
Hi Jack,
Many gun owners are paranoid and the NRA and gun dealers love to keep them that way. They have spread lies about Obama's intentions and are literally reaping the profits.
Dicky Neely
Corpus Christi, Tx.
Because American's are violent and paranoid. Name a country where a student brings a gun to the school or workplace, church and starts shooting up the place. You truly can't trust the average nuthead out there.
One word Jack, "Stupidity"
Jack
Two words NRA,GOP
It’s not a fact-based worry as much as a call to action for revolt from those who understand what they’re doing (like Fox News), when they repeat lies so often they take on a life of their own, to the gullible and ignorant among us.
Because they listen to right wing cronies like Hannity, Limbaugh and Boortz and are easily influenced.
NRA fear mongering
The right wing fringe unit of the Republican party has really done a snow job on people, and unfortunately, some groups of malliable people who believe EVERY WORD THEY SAY are banding together in some mass hysteria that the president will take away their guns! I actually believed that in this day and age, the American people were smarter than that! They are so consumed with fear and resentment aimed at a black president, they can't see how foolish they're acting! If they didn't want him as the president, then they should have voted for McCain!
Simple explaination: GOP scare tactic. We have seen it in previous elections. The Republican Party uses the Second Amendment to get votes.
I don't know Jack, Fox News?
It isn't so much that they are worried Pres. Obama will get rid of guns, its more of a "We have a Democrat for president, must mean our guns will shortly no longer be available." This is a simple stereotype that always has been, and always will be in the American political game.
SIU

There are two types of people involved: one, who instilling fear to make a few bucks and others who are the target.
The people who own their guns and are scared that the big bad liberal president will take them away are the people who are easily manipulated by the sore losers who are desperate to defame Obama. It's not just guns, it's everything. They're too easily manipulated. They think gun control means no guns period, instead of just taking them away from criminals.
First: Congress would have to ban guns not the president. Second: It will never happen. This is just another sign of white fear (I'm white, btw) about no longer being the majority in the country. And it's not only disturbing but also disgusting.
Why am I worried? For the same reason I'm worried he will take over the banks and auto companies... oh, wait, he's already done that!
Gee, someone may have their rights taken away. Boo Hoo. My rights were taken away in Nov. here in CA.
Simple answer. FOX News.
Jack if you have to ask that question you must be very naive. 'The South will raise again" was quoted all through the south during my childhood and I thought it was a joke. And it was said "if it ain't done... like in Texas" your not a American. Some of them actually believe those old sayings and they think it's written in the Bible...we have the right to carry a gun... Some folks call it southern humor, others think seriously about their guns. All I know is I'm glad my daddy moved to the northwest during the last great depression. But maybe you ought to turn all that paper money into gold. Don't get excited Jack! lighten up...After the internet starts the revolution things might get better.
These people are delusional. End of story.
I think they should be concerned. This is a right not many countries enjoy, that being the arming of its citizens. I hope it stays in tact. We all have the right to defend our property, family, etc. with a gun, and it should not be tampered with.
Foley,al. Maybe it"s because he hasn"t done anything he has said he would do, everyone thinks that he will do what he hasn"t said he" d do... Does that make sense, Jack????
well I'd only taken them with a grain of salt until more and more legislation has come out. I'd given The Pres. and his Admin the benefit of doubt. Now, that this topic has come up again in time with the Net Neutrality laws, etc...They have reason to fear. I'm getting concerned.
Hey Guys What's up...lol...anyways, it's called "Fear" and these are the same people who have in the past spout their religion as they are Holy than Thou. Fear, does a lot to a man. But what do they fear, it is their lack of knowledge that fuels their fears.
Because the socially conservatives in the right wing have, year after year, resorted more to fear mongering and spreading ridiculous lies and rumors, all while stoking religious hate; instead of sticking to the intelligent fiscally conservative policies and isolationism they were once known for. Americans are scarred of so many ridiculous things, and the republican party is to blame.
simple answer: fox news (fair and balanced?????)
Many people in this country are not about to let the facts interfere with their beliefs. This is far from the first time that Republicans have circulated lies to discredit Obama.
Jim, Craig, CO
WHY? Because Obama is so far left wing liberal on everything else, no one believes for a second that he won't go after guns or ammo. It's only a matter of time, period!
The president has been leading an assault on our freedom. Its obvious he wants us to be defenseless. People are gearing up for an all out war to save our liberties. The Copenhagen treaty is all you have to know.
Welcome to the age of ramped paranoia.
its not about guns jack~ its about a political issue that republicans can keep going.
Who profits from this story? I believe it is gun and ammunition manufacturer's way to sell more. The more people spread this gossip of the President banning guns, the more they sell. Also the NRA profits from this as they get more members.
Jack,
People who are concerned that Obama will take their guns ownership rights away are of that mindset for the same reasons they've purchased guns in the first place–FEAR. Misguidance at the hands of those in some sectors of the media have impacted a sizeable minority motivating and compelling them to arm themselves under speculative reasoning...Jack, tell your viewers that Obama will remove all vowels from the alphabet and these same people with go on Jeopardy the next day to buy as many vowels as they can...
The government will never ban the sale of guns in the United States. They will how ever ban the sale of ammunition, gun powder, and reloading supplies. So you can keep your gun but cant shoot it .
You can not ban gun ownership it is a constitutional right, but on the upside it is stimulating part of the economy.
Jack,
Why do you and everyone else pay attention to what Obama says, rather than what he does. His record speaks volumes. Say wasn't he the most left-leaning Senator and everyone fell for his centrist rhetoric? Well, fool me once, shame on me, fool me twice, shame on you. The American people are getting tired of this silver-tongued President. When we emerge from this presidency, we will not be the same and it will not be the change people expected.
Americans are being whippe into a frenzy by right wing nuts about guns. Obama does not want to take guns from those who legally own them.
Quite simply, at University of Chicago, Obama ran into Professor John Lott one day, and had the following exchange:
Obama: You're that gun guy (Prof Lott had run serveral surveys and analysis on gun ownership and their effect on crime).
Professor Lott acknowledged that to which Obama replied:
"Well I don't think anybody should own a gun."
Just ask Professor Lott yourself.
Americans are worried because Fox News and Rush Limbaugh have convinced them they should be.
In Arizona with a permit anyone can carry a gun in public. I own guns myself. I don't think this President is worrying about the lawful public. I just wish I owned stock in some of these gun manufacturers. I am sure they are misleading the public for profits. After all Isn't this a capalist society?
Because there are no images of him in camouflage or riding across a range for a "photo opp" to show his love of the 2nd amendment. The fact that he actually pronounces "nuclear" properly creates some disconnect with the gun-toating South.
Hi Jack: The better question might be "what does it say about the U.S. when almost everyone there feels the need to carry a gun or to have one in their home". Of all the folks I know not one of them has a gun. They don't feel the need to have one for protection. Sounds like you are still living with the Wild West mentality. The war between the States is over, THAT was when the right to bear arms was introduced . All the best, Maggie from Canada
Sir, President Obama, like any good lawyer, is splitting hairs and hidin behind technicalities. Is it or isn't true that President Obama signed a law which prohibits the sale of expended military brass to American companies for the production of new ammo? And that that brass is now being sold to China at a fraction of what Americans ammo manufactures are willing to pay for it?
Perhaps that's the reason why there's a ammo shortage in America? Not the "hysteria" that you suggest is striking law abiding gun owners.
President Obama might be technically telling the truth; He is not going after the guns. But by restricting the manufacture of ammo he renders the guns useless!
Everything this man has done since he took office has been behind closed doors and nothing more than a quick shift of hands.
Because the gun and ammunition makers, the NRA, and the Republican noise machine are working very hard to keep that worry alive.
These poll results demonstrate that this President's opponents are willing to lie about anything and everything and that a significant portion of the populace either want to believe this or are too lazy to learn otherwise. It's all part of the disturbing trend of factions on the right, led by Fox News, fomenting violent attitudes and responses to the President and his entire administration.
I live alone and had a prowler last winter. My son bought me a pistol (I'm an ex-deputy so I know how to use it) I think the Republicans have been spreading rumors again, OK still, they will do anything to put President Obama in a bad light. Like the old expression says "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will own guns" Good, law abiding people are not the ones to fear. Criminals get guns illegally now!! So a ban on guns would not do any good.
What a shame that some people thrive on fear. They create it for themselves and sell it to others who are ready to listen. I think the people who are afraid of losing their guns secretly know, in their hearts, that guns are bad for society. Innocent people are killed and maimed by them. We call it fear, I call it guilt.
if im not mistaken Obama supported the assult weapon ban which listed semi automatic weapons in the ban. Which is only almost every find of weapon made and owned now adays. Plus if that ban was signed into law, how hard would it be for another one to be signed into law. so why wouldn't a person who loves their second amendment find Obama as a threat.
Why are so many people worried about Obama taking gun rights away? Because the right – wing NRA has made it a huge issue – scaring people into thinking that they will loose their rights. I am in the business and I've never seen such a feeding frenzy of people buying guns and ammunition and hoarding them. People who would not normally have a gun in their home are now buying them worried that it will be their last chance.
Most of the Americans who are worried about it hate President Obama and are Republicans, and probably a member of the NRA.
Jack, I have to say this one is ridiculous. There is no need for Americans to fear Obama trying to ban guns. For one thing, the President does not make the laws–Congress does. For another, the time for Democrats in office may be dwindling, due to their complete mismanagement and other errors (i.e., lack of transparency) regarding the Health Care bill. We should see a rise in Republican seats after 2010 elections.
President Obama has said he supports the 2nd Amendment (what President could not support ANY amendment, frankly?). It's not that a President can do a whole lot about an amendment he wished were not there–but I don't think Obama has the appetite for gun banning. He is, however, part Socialist (but that comes from Hillary's influence and her health care ideas).
An armed populace is a safe populace. Though the United States was invaded at least once (when the British burned all of Washington DC, including the White House, nearly to the ground), we've not been invaded for the most part because we all have massive arsenals and weapons of mass destruction. One thing you don't mess with in America...is an American. 😉
I can promise you, every redneck and most gun owners in my area hate Obama. They believe every fake email and myth that Fox News throws at them. They fear things that aren't true, including the that their guns will be taken from them. I have had discussions with these people and ask them what has Obama done to change gun laws. They always say he has done something but can NEVER tell me what it is. Ignorance is why people fear that Obama will try to take their guns.
Waynesboro, Mississippi
Because much to my surprise, we have the most ignorant people living in the US. I hate to say this because, I have lived for a long time and have seen a lot of things. I always had respect and pride in this country, even with all it's short comings. but this year I have truly come to know why we can't seem to advance in this country.
I am not afraid! Do not be afraid of a dictator. However, I must be fair, .The people in this country has brought a lot of this stuff upon themselves. What we need to do is this: Take back our country and start living righteous lives as unto the Lord. If we don't we all suffer. This I do promise. Good day..
People are concerned because they think that democrats don't like the second amendment. But that's tough, it's a critical part of our constitution, and sales are obvioulsy a part of our economy. Obama cannot ban gun sales and thus will not. Most gun owners are rural republicans and would say that Obama would make a law which violates their constitutional rights, i guess that's what he does.
These gun happy rednecks think having guns make them safe from the government or crime, live in a dream world. Maybe it's the old story about guys who have to drive sports cars, or have to have a big four wheel drive truck to prove their manhood. People need to get in touch with reality, and concern themselves with a real danger, like letting banks control our central banking.
Jack,
Chicago is anti second amendment and so is Obama and his far left advisors.
He's a Harvard elite type who'd love to seriously restrict our rights.
Amercans know that if there's any excuse, ie some nut who causes a serious incident, Obama & the lefties would try to pounce on our freedoms.
Can someone please tell me why I would need a gun? I pay my taxes for law enforcement to protect me. Guns lead to the sort of thing that is now going on in Edmonton. Don't hear about this type of event very often in Europe. I wonder why?
Two things: first of all, we don't feel it's Obama.......It's the "right wing" up to their old "fear tactics"......secondly, to bring back the old quote "it's the economy stupid"! Back during the last Great Depression, we were more rural & people knew how to survive on their own and eventually there were jobs. Nowadays, anyone who has "more" than his neighbor could be fair game for those who are either desperate or evil! For years we have wondered what would become of this country when all the manufacturing jobs were gone. Guess what.........we may be about to find out!! As you say, "It's getting pretty scarey out there!"
I am worried that Twinky-Winky is destablizing the country, and fomenting a race war. He will be defeated, and when that happens his supporters are going to riot, because they are going think his defeat was "race-based". I fear civil strife, and the authorities will be overwhelmed. Black America is already a very "dangerous" place for those who oppose Obama. I see it coming, and this administration, and it's supporters are causing it.
Jack...The right wing Republican and some Democrats think the NRA is the Bible. The NRA sparks fear by their ever-increasing dialog. It pumps up their culfers with new memberships and their associated lobbyist in the gun and ammunition trade. I believe in the second amendment and I own a hunting rifle and a handgun and I have no fear of my government taking them away from me. But I do believe there should be something done about these automatic high-powered assault weapons. I feel stronger regulations should be put in place. No one except police, and our armed services need this type of weapon.
im worried about banning guns becuase its geting to now a days u cant walk down the street or take your kids to the park without some one causing trouble, and also u need a weapn to protect your famly thats how it's been for last 200 years and it should stay the same
Its just another republican spin. If you cant get him with something hes done then get for something he hasnt. Reps. know the people who own guns are a huge voting block and what better way to stir up a large group of voters before elections than to lie and toss a scare out there that has no wieght but for rumor. They pray on peoples fears and will do anything , including lie, to get votes.
Republicans are and have gone over the top on this topic. Republican media outlets, ehem, FoxNews, have what seems to be and always has been, a hypnotic control over their followers. They have to get real, a complete ban of gun sales? Because their opposition is in office, they are literally "scared" of his decisions, and this is one that they are going ape over. Somewhere in their closed tunneled minds, nothing is permeable.
Jack:
How about because those inside the beltway in D.C. are ALWAYS doing something to us secretly. I like your story shorts on each question but I question the BIG rifle in your blog photo, it kinda reminds me of a line from a Clint Eastwood movie (you know out there in Cauliforneeyah) where now ammo is under infringement, but back to the movie, the line was from the bad guy taking Clint's handgun from him and said "My, that is a big one!". Unlike your photo though the Getty photograph highly exaggerated perspective to make the piece look gigundus. That is a bit of twist on the truth, folks.
Ban on gun sales and ammo worry many Americans because of the backdoor attemtps by this administration to obtain information about every gun owner, and with record of appointing czars and other crooks into this administration, it will only be a matter of time before we will be in the same position as Australia and Great Britian where ONLY the crooks will have weapons. Law abiding citizens will not be able to protect themselves from thugs nor the legal crooks that are trying to run this country. Maybe the current lawmakers fear for their lives???
I'll answer with a couple of questions, "Isn't this the norm when a Democrats are in the majority". I thought gun sales increased during Democratic presidencys – always. Funny thing is, "wasn't the most notable law passed, the Brady Handgun Violence Protection Act – named for a Republican in the line of fire while serving President Reagan?"
The fear mongering Republicans have been sending massive e-mails about this subject claiming that President Obama is going to "take the guns". I have received these e-mails along with all the inacurate fear creating e-mails about the Health Care plan and many other subjects. I am not a member of either party and vote according to the candidate not according to the party. These people are spreading false information down right lies because they are in such a negative position politically. It saddens me that we have to resort to these tactics rather than addressing the issues and working TOGETHER to find the answers.
illiteracy explains it all. When you get your education from certain special interest groups, You wouldn't know any better
I am a white, bleeding heart liberal, a Texan, AND a gun owner. In my humble opinion the current frenzy among gun owners in my neck of the woods in blatant, unbridled fear coupled with a healthy dose of racism, of course steeped in some good ol capitalism!
Because they are insecure, lacking in self worth, hate Obama, and have no interest in knowing the facts about what the President says or does.
What I don't understand is, most of the people who fear gun control the most are legal gun owning citizens! I also don't think they understand that there is a difference between gun control, strict gun control and a ban. I am a gun owner, I come from a family of gun owners, sport shooters and hunters. I don't think gun control is the worst thing in the world. I don't think gun laws are going to limit criminals from getting them at all. Most of them already have them illegally. I don't think it is going to keep me, my family or friends from doing what we do though.
I don't know either. Suppose someone oughta ask Rush Limbaugh? He seems to have all the answers to some folks.
The same reason they "cling to their guns" and believe all sorts of easily disproved nonsense. They're high RWAs (authoritarian followers) and tend to think in paranoid terms and do whatever they're told by their authoritarian leaders (have you forgotten the Bush presidency already?). And yes, I'm a gun owner.
– Steve in CA
Well Jack, Gun owners have a valid concern since dem-o-rats have a long standing effort to ban/ confiscate all privately owned firearms. If they succeed, we will truly be a nation of subjects instead of citizens!! The president and his inner circle have made their views plainly clear what is their intention agenda. First the ill-concieved stimulus, now health care reform and you can figure out what's next !!!! SEMPER TYRANNUS!!!
Obama was right they do cling to guns and church. I'm not surprised at all. There will never be a ban on guns in America. Any President or Lawmaker would be foolish to implement such a thing. I don't own a gun but I feel safer knowing that I can. No matter what Obama says those types aren't going to believe him and that as an American is Sad.
People fear there will be more bans because they tend to listen to misinformed rhetoric. Obama has never mentioned anything about adding more regulations against guns, in fact, I had seen a clip during his campaign that he is actually all for gun ownership. Maybe cause its just because a democrat is in office. And, I won't even get into the fear factor I hear from the bigots on why they are stalking up on ammo.
Just remember, contempt breeds fear, and fear breeds rhetoric, rumours and misinformation. Even though the fear has no basis, its just our nature here in the US, that we prefer to believe what "we want to hear" rather than what is based on actual facts. As long a s we have the Glen Becks, Limbaughs and the opinion journalism broadcasted as news, you will be seeing this fear mongering continue.
Unfotunately the people who could honestly answer this question won't know about it ,because they're watching fox news.
President Obama supports the assult weapon and in the ban it lists also semi automatic weapons, (pistol, most rifles) so if a person who person who supported their second amendment and wanted to be able to protect their self they would find Obama as a threat to their gun rights.
Jack, The NRA and their ilke are a bunch of paranoid idiots. My husband quit the NRA over their spewing that the democrats were going to take his guns. We have a constitution in the United States of America and if they were so concerned maybe they should have been screeming their heads off when the last administration was trampling the constitution.
The reason they fear that Obama will ban gun sales is that Americans have fallen in love with conspiracies. We, as a nation, will buy any conspiracy theory any of us can dream up. I think it makes us feel important. We can say, "I, who REALLY understands what's going on, is too smart to be fooled." It's part of our move toward victimization as well. We all want to think there is some category we can fit in that makes us important enough to be persecuted.
I'd say more, but I have to go now. I have to send a note to all my friends. The government next is going to try to have us all dye our hair black and get green contact lenses.
Gun owners are worried because certain radio and TV hosts are telling them that Obama wants to take them. When the people you trust to tell the truth are all telling you that the President is going to take your guns you believe them. If Obama serves a second term and never touches the second amendment people will still think that he is going to take their guns, up to the last day he is in office.

because FOX "news" has spent the past year fear mongering. they tell these people that all their rights and freedoms are being taken away, and what does our Constitution tell us to do when that happens? To rise up and overthrow the oppressive government (the democrats, not the republicans of course!) . FOX is breeding fear and all we can hope is that it doesn't lead to violence.
I have some considerable experience in this issue. It's the gun shop owners MOST of the time. They put up random articles on blackboards. They bring up the rumors themselves most of the time! It helps business, and gun shops in most areas are lucrative businesses. Politics gets involved and the GOP capitalizes on it. And since most avid hunters are no where near a TV right now, ignorance runs abundant, especially in rural areas.
Because the wingnuts don't look at logic, Jack. They listen to Limbaugh, et. al. who play on their fears, whether there is any logic to it at all. He voted for gun control previously because it included sales to minors, for goodness sake!
BTW, I have a gun and am the daughter of a police officer and STILL believe in tighter gun control. And a lot of the ones who are screaming the loudest about not wanting gun control are the very ones I'd like to see lose theirs!
Firearms ownership is, unfortunately, a political wedge. With a Democratically controlled Congress and a Democrat in the White House, it's no wonder why so many Americans are worried anti-2nd amendment legislation will pass. To many that own firearms and support the 2nd amendment, it's not a matter of if, but when more legislation will be passed. Right now, the president has an awful lot on his plate. But the day will come during his administration when he will have the time to tackle this issue. My hope is that, by then, more folks will realize what the 2nd Amendment means and it will be a moot point.
By the way, I'm a democrat who owns firearm and I believe the 2nd Amendment should become a non-platform issue.

So more people buy guns so crime goes up so more people need to buy more guns...and our taxes go up as law enforcement tries to keep the people with guns away from each other. Do we live in a civilized country or a shooting gallery?
I don't think President Obama is trying to ban the sale of guns. I'm a 25 year old Republican and I am not concerned about my gun rights.
They're not worried. It's just something for them to get carried away with their hatred of people who have a different opinion than they do. It also feeds into their Anti-Obama passion. They know he's not ever going to take away their guns. They just make believe that's their concern. Just another thing for them to hate and toss out irrational protests. It makes them feel alive and relevant. These people have probably never been any good at listening to reasoning. They never will listen and act reaonable.
with so much hate and guns it,s just a madder of time before the crazy,s come out of the closets
I say send all of those gun owners to the middle east and let them make use of their guns, we can then send our soldiers home. Why in God's name do you need to own a gun for?

Jack –
Some of the highest unemployment levels are currently in the South & Midwest. Controlling gun sales worries many in these regions as hunting is often a partial source of their food supply. With little prospect of an improved economy , rising prices on commodities, looming inflation caused by massive debt, and worst of all the probable reelection of incumbents to Congress many Americans now feel they better be prepared to defend, protect & feed themselves – like many Southerners & Midwesterners.
I consider myself a party neutral.. I have owned firearms and believe in our right to carry them. Typically,(and friends of mine are the same way) who own firearms are the same people who are paranoid about the world around them. Rational thought and self control goes out the window when talking about simeones right to own and carry and the "freaks" come out of the woodwork. You can also thank the NRA and similar for fueling and running this firestorm. Calm down people, take your hand off the trigger and listen with your ears, not that radical conservative wrecking your frontal lobe.

Look what happened to the gun totting soccer mom that took a gun to here daughters soccer game. Her right to bear arms didn't help her one bit. What about the man that recently shot and killed his wife to be the day before their wedding because he thought she was a robber. We continue to see prime examples of how the right to bear arms leads to either people owning guns that are undertrained in firearms or for the really paranoid freaks of the country. Lets leave the guns to those that know how and when to use them like say oh i don't know law enforcement or the armed services.
President Obama, being our first black President, scares the hell out of everybody. People are expecting an armed revolution in this country and they want to be ready. I plan on stocking up amunition myself. People feel there is something in the wind and its comming our way.
People do not want to lose thier weapons at a time where violent criminals get away with murder because of immoral lawyers, crooked cops, and ill effective laws. Today if you kill an intruder in your own home you get sued and go to jail. People are ticked off.
They will never get my guns. They will turn me into a criminal first.
Hey Jack maybe it's because when he goes to give speeches they have right wing wackos showing up outside carrying AK47s that just might be loaded. Even though they say it's their right to do so they don't say why they're doing it.Could you imagine if when Bush was president what would have happened if while giving a speech a group of men, especially if they were Black or Latino, showed up outside carrying guns? I'm sure the far right would have NOT defended their right to do so.
Where is all this paranoid thinking coming from? Everything is a conspiracy. We are the envy of the world because of our democracy and freedoms. Yet we fear our own elected officials. If the government is our enemy then we are our own enemy. Come on America THINK!
This country was formed by the use of guns and racism. President Obama can't get rid of either one. Sure, there may be more minor restrictions enacted but not enough to force gun owners-legal gun owners to get rid of their guns or to prohibit law abiding citizens from buying guns. The idea is just plain stupid. Oh, did I mention that I am in the 55/53 percentile?
Then why is ATF asking gun dealers to send in records of all the customers who bought guns from the dealer? Happened in Oklahoma City & heard of another dealer in Arkansas that also was told to send in records of all his customers. Obviously someone has an agenda to find out who has firearms and the type. I don't think Attorney General Eric Holder is doing this on his own do you?
Oklahoma City
Because beck, rush, hannity, and the rest of the wingnut media pundits tell them that's the case. I'm sure the gun makers and bullet manufacturers have nothing to do with this propaganda being spewed over the airwaves everyday. Or do they?
Could it be the media hype, especially by FOX? The President is working on rebuilding the economy, two wars, healthcare, and climate change. But his opposition has nothing to offer. So they continue to scare their uneducated base with the fearmongering God, Guns and Gay agenda.
Gun owners need not worry. The Bush Administration left President Obama far too much to fix for him for him to try to pry guns from their cold, unemployed, uninsured, foreclosed upon hands.
Ban on gun sales, Fake Birth Certificate, and Killing Grandma. If these yahoo's keep this up the President will probably end up being from Mars by the end of his term. I am amazed at the ignorance of the right wing movement and their complete diregard of the facts.

Jack,
This is something that the republicans are saying to get people to stop thinking about Health Care. Remember "Fear" is their motto. You are as dumb as republicans. Why do you fall for this?
It's very scary when then Government tries to trample our 2nd amendment rights. There is a reason for the 2nd amendment and its not to hunt deer I think Thomas Jefferson said it best
"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. ... God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion; what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms." - Thomas Jefferson
To conflict with any amendments of the constitution without legal causation would provoke great dissaproval of many Americans. Especially with the gun and ammunition sales as high as they are right now. Surely president obama isnt going to ban guns with this type of pressure. Whether we are democrats or republicans, we all deserve the right to bear arms. And this is a fundamental law of the U.S.
The Bush Administration left President Obama far too much to fix for him to try to pry guns from their cold, unemployed, uninsured, foreclosed upon hands.
Jack, it's obvious that this "rumor" is just another tactic by the Republican Party to spread fear among people whose gun rights trump all other issues in this country. Obama never said, either in his campaign or during his presidency, that gun-owners have anything to worry about, yet the lies still spread like wildfire on the internet and on biased cable networks like Fox News. I think it's a shame that so-called intelligent people still buy into this nonsense!
Many of us fear that the President does not BELIEVE as strongly in
Constitutional rights as he claims -–
Because President Obama is a Democrat and so many Americans believe that Dems want the right to bare arms deleted from the constitution. And who has convinced those folks that the Dems want to take away their guns? Yeah. You know.
Because Jack, they are bitter and clinging to their guns.
Cause prior to his run for the presidency he was all for gun control and as a candidate he had the unconditional support the Brady outfit.
Simple – the piece of paper formerly known as the Constitution. What used to be our basic rights have dissipated since 9/11 and President Obama is unfortunately continuing the trend.
Because the widespread, ongoing hate email out there has riled them up to believe all kinds of conspiracy theories. I'm disappointed you would even bring this up, Jack, it just encourages the lunatic fringe.
Every reason to allow guns to be in the possession of civilians is selfish! Guns of every type need must be banned and removed from society, for everyone's safety. Statistically a gun in the home only increases the odds of gun related violence, those who feel a need to protect themselves with a gun should reassess their priorities. To shooting range and hunting enthusiasts: find a new hobby. Do you suppose Michael Vick would have endured his disgrace if as many Americans had dog fighting as their hobby? It was his culture, but his culture was wrong and dangerous. Just as guns are. Reality is the sheer mass of people in the way make this very difficult, but not impossible. Throw down your arms!
Well Jack as you all ready no, some Americans believe what the NRA says as if it where the gospel. The President has said nothing about taking Gus from law abiding citizens, a fool and his money are soon parted.
Jack,
REAL Americans are not worried about anybody banning gun sales. There is a lot of "fear" email on the web, and the whiney people who actually believe that junk are the noisy ones who rave about it. People just need to relax until they get to the bridge. Worrying about crossing it while it's not even in sight is foolish! My gun is for the defense of my home and family...not to whine about.
New Church, Va
I'll be afraid when he pries it from my cold, dead fingers.
Because he hired Eric Holder who definitely will try to ban gun sales. Presidents always try to look moderate on almost any issue. For their true opinions, look to who they hire.
I beleive (as a several gun owner) that this is just more misinformation to keep dissent going and not go forward to try to fix whats wrong in america, most likely this is all being done for profits and by people who dont like the current administration.
I think that decent people are seeing that without a gun, whether it be at home or driving through bad neighborhoods, nobody is safe. When I saw how the Marines went into New Orleans and pulled people out of their homes and handcuffed them because they tried to conceal their gun, I became very angry at the way Americans on American soil were being treated. Many people are afraid of guns anyway, like I used to be however, once you have some practice, you know that YOU are in control and have nothing to be afraid of - except the government. Thanks.
To all of those who said that American's are stupid and that we are crazy!!! Well, on most days I would have to disagree with you but not today. I mean look at who is in the White House. We must be really stupid...
They have been only listened to the groups ie: Fox news, Glen and Limbaugh who spread fear, gloom and doom. Refusal to use common sense regarding all the lies being spread by radicals. We do have a right to own guns however, there should be strickter laws in place such as a persons mental background before they can purchase a weapon.
PS: Hunters have no need for assault weapons to hunt during the different seasons
guns guns guns america is a very violent country and always will be some people just like to hear themselves talk ... with all the murders in this country how could a reasonable american fight against better control of guns ... it doesn't make sense .... I think the reason is the media (wait) I'm just saying most of the news about killing or harming people comes out of urban america they don't tell the whole story ... like healthcare what person in their right mind could fight against reform .... it just doesn't make sense ... thaks jack
I am for the ban of weapons, change the constitution.
and for those who are for, don't complain when your shot.
Good question Jack, since he has mentioned nothing about banning Gun in the U. S. My question is are they really concerned about the banning of Guns in the country, or preparing for war?
Because most of those Americans are still livid that Obama won the Presidency, and "they" make up stories based on hearsay to diminish the President and to get people "up in arms"!
I think our constitution the second amendment is out dated adopted on December 15, 1791, that is over two hundred and 18 years and the world has changed significantly. one in those days they hunted for their food we do not do that anymore unless your Ted Nugent and he lives off the land. We are not the same nation we were and Charlton Heston is dead so I think it is time to release as he said " I'll give you my gun when you take it from my cold, dead hands" and everyone elses too. people with gun have accidents lets stop them.
Jack, what is wrong with people? Are they so weak as to believe a new president from the Democratic party will go after them and their weapons? The President has said many times, don't mess with the Constitution of the United States. That includes the right to bare arms if I'm not mistaken. These must be the same folks who claimed this absurdity when Carter was president also. They were wrong then and their wrong now. This is just conservative propaganda as usual. Nothing new.
Dennis / Nashville,Tn.
Is there anything the GOP wont do to muddy up the water? To many people are listening to the pundents lies and spin and it's getting out of hand. I worrie that an uprising could be in proccess because the pundents are praying on their fears and gullable minds and will believe anything. If that happens, i will blame the GOP spin radio talk show hosts .
Simple – the piece of paper formerly known as the Constitution. Our basic rights have slowly dissipated since 9/11 and the current administration appears to be continuing the trend. Whose responsibility is it to turn Thomas Jefferson back over in his grave?
Jack..Ignorance and GOP b.s.
This is difficult. On one hand we have individuals who are dead because of guns. On the other, many more would die once a government is able to prevent a person from ownership of a gun. I am now ready to understand why gun ownership was put into our constitution. I think it is time for people to understand this and focus on a way to prevent those kill from getting access. Our present laws are not doing this. When there is a will there will be a way to find a solution. Until then the answer must be in favor of FREEDOM.

I live in Tennessee, a conservative state where bible passages are commonly used to reinforce opinions, and where gun ownership is as emotionally-loaded a topic as abortion. Guns make people feel powerful, even if they're only used to knock a few hapless doves out of the sky, and these people do not want to lose the feeling of control. Republican leaders know this and feed on it, and use fear to incite anger.
Dear Jack, As a woman who has a permit to carry a firearm, I find this whole thing rather sad. You have Right-Wingers filling the airwaves with lies and propaganda to fuel these peolpes fears. Never once have I worried about 'The Government' taking my gun away. Many of my friends and responsible gun owners feel the same way. And when I see the people who are the most frightened, they look a lot like the 'Tea-Baggers', the'Birthers' and the '912ers' . Those people are more than willing to accept any Right-Wing paranoia thrown at them.
Reason 1: promises to create a "Civilian National Security Force".
And I quote “We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.” ~ President Barack Obama
Reason 2: an administrative staff that condones and admires the actions of a mass murderer. "The third lesson and tip actually comes from two of my favorite political philosophers: Mao Tse-tung and Mother Theresa - not often coupled with each other, but the two people I turn to most to basically deliver a simple point" ~ Anita Dunn
Reason 3: "When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty." ~ Thomas Jefferson
In Animal Farm, George Orwell has vividly portrayed the outcome of a wonderful orator and "hope" bringer. I choose to be prepared to defend my liberty and my freedom from tyranny and oppression.
The goverment gave the American citizen the right the bear arms, and this right SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. Also, it gave the Americans to keep a well regulated MILITIA..
The 2nd ammendment was created for protection and everyone who uses this right offensively should take a constitutional course
Gun and ammunition sales have sky rocketed mainly due to the NRA and many gun publications spewing absolute nonsense and pure speculation solely designed to boost sales. As a result prices on ammo went crazy as people began to hoard and gun sales are at an all time high. By the way, I am a gun owner and a member of the NRA but I will not be renewing my membership.
The Democratic Party's platform is GUN CONTROL! Always has been and always will be. Certainly this is a cause for concern when you consider that both the House and Senate are majority Democratic. I have no doubt that the Democrats, staying consistent with their party platform, will pass gun control bills in both Houses that will be signed by the President designed to further burden LAW ABIDING citizens. It's amazing that there are no gun control laws for criminals as criminals believe themselves to be above the law and, as such, have little to no regard for any gun law. The Second Amendment is a right guaranteed by the US Constitution, not a privilege as some would like you to believe.
simply... because they're ignorant!
Because they chose to hear and live by one word : fear!
One more thing – Just because a president is a democrat, a liberal, or black, doesn't mean he will play into the hands of every stereo-type associated with same. Obama has been in office less than a year and the American people are already expecting for the recession to be over and the economy to be turned around. Obama is not God. It took the Republicans and George W many years to get America into this position. How it the heck do we think the next President and Congress can solve these problems in one year or less? Even one term? Let's be realistic and give a realistic amount of time for the changes to take place. I am so happy Obama is finally addressing the outlandish bonuses and salaries of the companies who are still in business because of our tax dollars. BS on the fact they had contracts – they did not do a job that warrants bonuses or they wouldn't need a bail out! Fancy that! You get what you earn and if you earn nothing or drive your company into the negative, then guess what you get! Let than nothing! Step up to the plate and do your job and earn your paycheck like the rest of us!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jack, there's a cure for H1N1, but no cure for stupid.
with all the globalization taking place and a european style obama administration alot of americans are feeling like our goverment wants to disarm its poeple,I think alot of these fears are pointless considering the vast majority of prior and present law enforcment and military are constitution loving americans not to mention a poeple that are literally armed to the teeth .........but ,no one ever accused our government of being very smart
It is sad when people get so fearful of crime everywhere that
they feel the need to buy guns of all kinds, as if that is going to make them safe. They dont even trust there own police- the word is
paranoid – high anxiety – watching too much tv violence – news
programs that hype it... we all need to calm down!!!
Disarming the pubic is the first step in all Communist takeovers....Whether it be Russia..China..Cuba..Cambodia etc. Disarming the public is an essential part of the Communist Manifesto.
I'm hearing it too. It's even coming from friends I know who voted Obama. More scare tactics from the Right. I believe very strongly in our President & believe he is too smart to try to ban guns even IF he had the desire to do so.
These people fear that president Obama wants to change everything. They believe he is a socialist liberal who can use his power to get anything he wants. We now know that is not true. He can't rewrite the constitution either but can and should be able to enforce lawful responsible gun ownership. America has a serious gun problem but banning them is not an option.
Because it's much easier to stampede a mindless herd than to teach it reason.
The Founding Fathers must be turning over in their graves saying "this is not what we had in mind" when they gave us the Second Amendment "The Right to Bear Arms." What goes on at gun shows where you can buy weapons without backround checks would really have them "up in arms" pardon the pun. Children killing children, felons getting guns with ease, this is not a "right" it's a definite "wrong".
Simple, Jack, because so many Yanks have bought in to the gun owning/ toting LUNACY that now pervades your mindsets!!! The idea at the time was of single shot revolvers and rifles NOT assault weapons and multi thousands of rounds in storage let alone weapons of greater destructive capability. There is talk of sealing the borders, WELL as a Canuck I now believe in it – from our side !!! Our entry to the ASYLUM should definitely be RESTRICTED !!!
It doesn't take much critical thinking to get to the source of this "he-wants-to-take-our-guns" furor, when the president has made no such indication. The people who seem to be making the most noise in this conservative movement (which has spawned the teabaggers and town hall disruptors) are the most wildly paranoid among conservatives. The Republican Party desperately wants to regain power, and as such, they and their talk-radio mouthpieces have a vested interest in feeding their paranoia. If they fail to satiate their target audience's vast appetite for paranoid fantasy, watch how quickly they lose interest, move on to a party that will happily cater to their crypto-anarchist leanings, and become Libertarians.
Because it's easier to accept the propoganda of the NRA and right -wing exteremists than to think for themselves. Believe it or not, there's a lot more to the Second Amendment than just the words "right to bear arms".
The answers from some of the posters above illustrate the answer to this question in full... there are far too many misinformed people who believe all the fear-mongering put forth by the NRA and the GOP. Too many people believe everything they hear on Fox "news" and aren't really educated above a sixth-grade level (even if some have a high school diploma or GED).
I can understand people's concern over gun control. But as the saying goes guns don't kill people, other people do. Passing gun ban laws will not stop violent crime. I am a responsible gun owner, and I feel safer with guns in my home. I was taught by my father to respect guns, and I will pass that same respect on to my childern. Owning firearms are not just a right, it is a responsiblity. The President will run into stiff oppisition when it comes pass gun ban laws. Banning guns will only take guns away from law abiding gun owners, and place them in the hands of criminals. We have very few home invasions in the area in which I live due to gun ownership. Thanks.
Sam, Ga
Anyone of intelligence realizes there has to be some gun control.
There are weapons and bullets out there that no one has any
business with.
And, when people are allowed to bring their guns to political rallies,
than that is taking the definition of rights way too far.
People with this kind of extreme thinking are ignorant and paranoid. They must be talking to Sarah Palin.
Jack,
It's all paranoia. The last thing I'm worried about is someone taking my guns away, but its a right wing way to whip up fears. Yes, I'm a liberal and I own 2 guns. Not worried at all.
Funny how they say this about every democratic President to come down the line and yet here we still have the right to own guns. It's all just NRA trying to keep money pouring in, and Republicans just spreading their fear to keep people voting for them.
