Why won't SC Gov. Mark Sanford go away?

FROM CNN's Jack Cafferty:

The writing seems to be on the wall for South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford - even if he refuses to read it. There's a growing chorus of voices in that state calling on the governor to just go away.

Sanford has been under fire ever since he went MIA for a week in June, lied about his whereabouts, and then resurfaced only to admit he wasn't hiking the Appalachian trail, but was in Argentina visiting his mistress. Since then he's been under investigation for his use of state resources.

The head of the Republican Party in South Carolina is expected to ask later today for a party resolution calling for Sanford's resignation. They voted in July to censure Sanford for "repeated failures to act in accordance" with the GOP's core beliefs. But they didn't ask him to step down then.

This comes just a day after a majority of the Republicans in the state House of Representatives wrote a letter to Sanford demanding his resignation... they say his actions have been "destructive to our state's image on a worldwide stage."

Among the 60 Republicans who signed the letter are several lawmakers who would play key roles in an impeachment process, which has also been talked about.

But Sanford isn't listening.. he called this letter "both unpersuasive and unsurprising," and said he won't be railroaded out of office by his political enemies.

A of couple weeks ago, Sanford also rejected his lieutenant governor's request that he resign for the good of the state.

Here’s my question to you: Why won't South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford go away?

Tune in to the Situation Room at 5pm to see if Jack reads your answer on air.

And, we love to know where you’re writing from, so please include your city and state with your comment.

Interested to know which ones made it on air?

Michael from Alexandria, Virginia writes:
It's really none of my business, or yours, since we don't live in South Carolina, however my guess is that he is an egomaniacal fool suffering the delusion that cheap grace will spare him from the divine judgment he so richly deserves.

Gina from South Carolina writes:
Mr. Cafferty, Being from S.C., I can only tell you we tend to produce some of the biggest egos in our politicians and Mark Sanford (and Joe Wilson too) is no exception. It is entirely about ego and to Mark Sanford, the only thing that matters is himself....not wife, not children, not God, and certainly not the people of the state of S.C. Pray for us Jack, we need all the help we can get!

Jackie from Dallas writes:
Because power is a drug, and he is hooked… The only way to get him to go away is to impeach him, convict him, and dump him, just like his wife did.

James writes:
This guy got all over Pres. Clinton for his infidelity and said he should quit. But it is ok, he's a Republican, they don't have to tell the truth, be honest or forthright. He fits right in the Republican Party.

Peter writes:
Go away? C'mon, he thinks he's entitled to be there. Just like far too many other politicians. Right Larry Craig? Right Charlie Rangel?

Katy writes:
His arrogance exceeds his ignorance. I find it a depressingly common failing in 50+ white, male Republicans.

Ann from Columbia South Carolina writes:
The sad part is this great nation must think that we are a bunch of uneducated, rude and unfaithful idiots from South Carolina. This is not true. There are a lot of great people here. Unlike the people who run this state.

Connor writes:
He has B.S.-Blagojevich Syndrome.

I think this man is hoping folks can just forget his indiscretions as we often do have short attention spans, what with all teh bait and switch by everyone trying to influence politics in this country. Sexual and Moral failings need to be addressed for these folks and I do think that those who display unethical conduct need to consider how they are serving this nation? As a young Catholic (no more) child of 12, i looked up at the cathedral spires and just knew that these so-called adult authorities did not have a clue to solve our many issues created, in large part by all adults who do not love as they obfuscate their true motives. Peace

Timing is everything....now that "Joe the Idiot" [Wilson] stuck his foot in his mouth, the South Carolina political machine over heats and derails. If Governor Sanford lays low and stays off the nature trails he's golden!

Marko is the ultimate "C Street" elitist and acts mentally retardedl. As a SC citizen I hope enough of our voters will finally learn that it is not a good idea to vote for losers such as our Luv Gov, newly famous jerk Congressman Joe Wilson and Sen DeMint. Each of them is a joke and a daily embarrassment to our state.

While not making any excuses for Gov. Sanford, why is everyone piously acting like this is something so shockingly new? So many politicians have been taking advantage of their positions and their expense budgets for years that unfortunately, it's almost to be expected. Has he been doing a good job otherwise? Has he shown bad judgement in other areas that truly matter in the running of his state? Does he have a demonstrated history of screwing up on or off the job? Should any of this excuse his conduct? Who knows? Maybe his detractors are just worried about his situation drawing attention to their own questionable liasons and conduct

Isn't this the same guy who refused his state's portion of the bailout and ignored serious issues going on in the schools...not to mention the idiocy behind his affair? Gov. Sanford won't leave because he's arrogant, delusional and believes he is entitled to his position.

Concerning both Sanford and Wilson, I am reminded of something a friend of mine from North Carolina said about South Carolina. "Too small to be a state, too big to be an asylum".

It could be that he doesn't believe he did anything wrong.

What I'd like to know is why the powers that be haven't impeached him yet. Going MIA for a week is inexusable.

Personally, I think Sanford won't go away because he apparently thinks that he's just one of millions that are in office, have affairs and get away with it. If he won't resign, there is a way to force the issue to where he won't have a choice. It's even in the law books. It's called "Impeachment".

Governor Mark Sanford was elected to a four year term. He is under no obligation to resign just because he's become an embarrassment to his party and his state. While it is beyond dispute that he conduct was embarrassing and tawdry, it remains to be seen if some of his acts, such at using his goverment airplane for private matters, rises to the level to justify his being impeached. If they do he should be impeached and convicted and thus removed from office. Otherwise he is entitled to serve out the balance of his term no matter how inconvenient that may be for others.

Unfortunately, Gov. Sanford is imbued with with the ignorance of arrogance.
He like so many others in his position feels that they are the exception to whatever ethics or morals society professes and that a meaningless apology is sufficient to excuse their moral failings. Their pious claims that they are taking full responsibility for their acts are meaningless since they refuse to accept even a minimum penalty for their transgressions. He like so many others won't even admit he has broken the public trust anad justifies his acts by claiming that he didn't steal as much. I don't believe psychological pretesting has reached the necessary level to prevent such people from holding public office but when it does, I'm all for mking it mandatory.

Like alot of people, he feels that 'if' he just sticks in there, things will get better. The man has lost touch with reality. He is hurting his party, his state, and even more so, his ability to ever be trusted again. How pathetic?

The reason he's not going away is...he's not yet been forced to do so.
A censure means nothing to a person this deep in denial and self justification. Impeachment does not need to be talked about , it needs to be carried out. Anything less will be considered by the Gov. as an invite to stay.

It's called arrogance. All the Republican party has done the past decade is proven that they're nothing but a bunch of abundantly rich, overly arrogant and hypocritical class of people who prey on their voters' inability to understand key issues due to the lack of education on these issues by these very elected officials in which I speak. They lack the will and desire to hold themselves to the very standards they hold others.

To all Republicans reading this; realize that it is you who gave these people their jobs, so if you're wanting to change your party, take it from Obama in that "Change, starts with you".

This governor should simply be removed by his constituents if they truly believe he needs to be removed. It's that simple. Like anyone else in this world, he can be fired from his job. Someone just needs to grow the political courage to hand this guy his pink slip.

How about this: Let the people of his state vote on his fate. After all, doesn't he believe in the democratic process? 🙂

Sanford won't go away because it's always been about Sanford. His hubris prevents him from any sort of contrition. He's willing to take the blows and call it penance, but he's not about to relieve South Carolina of his presence. Like robbing someone and doing the time but not repaying the victim, Sanford will never do what' s best for his state. Thus the state unfairly shares his disgrace.

If he betrayed his wife with this affair, why would he feel any more remorse regarding his relationship with his constituents and resign? He wouldn't. And if he broke the law, then SC should impeach him. Else, he should do what he feels he can get away with – like other Dems and Reps that I will not list here. That is politics, my friend.

Jack, Mark Sanford like the other congressmen and senators who have been revealed; doesn't think they have done anyone wrong. These people want the taxpayers money to do these things and do not want to pay the cost for their actions. He should do like Wilson, as you said and just go away. He is merely another policitian who cannot keep his pants on.

    Jack,
Sanford isn't resigning because he's right, and everyone else is wrong at least in his own mind. We've seen this sort of hubris in several Republicans. Think about it. This sort of hubris is rampant in our country . It allowed our previous President to invade Iraq upon pretense. It is what allows Cheney to claim that because torture kept America safe then torture is okay. When someone thinks he is right, then he must be right. Republican Right.

Why would he go away? Between a former Republican President going 2 full terms while being a war criminal and the head of the RNC spewing lie after lie on behalf of special interests and keeping his job, going to Brazil on South Carolina's dime to have an illicit affair is hardly reason enough for the Republicans to drum him out of office.

Governor Sanford has always "positioned himself as a principaled independent Republican who did not necessarily follow rank and file party lines." His own arrogance will be his undoing, but his fellow republicans have one agenda in mind. They are calling for resignation of the governor so that the Democrats will not use it against in the next election cycle. Our Lt. Governor is grandstanding for an office that he can not win in a general election and this would be his one opportunity to become governor. The field is for the office is filled with other more "viable' republican candidates. Is anybody actually thinking about the citizens of SC? Republicans and Democrats alike. We are tired of being embarrassed by the likes of Mark Sanford, Jim DeMint, Andre Bauer, Jim Wilson. The State deserves better.

Jack, apparently its something in the GOP code of misconduct: If you disgrace the nation, the party and your family by behaving like the mental wreck that you are – don't quit. Just keep plugging away. If you're lucky you'll be touted by conservative crazies as important to the party like...oh...say...Sarah Palin or the yahoo who yelled out at our President last night. Jack I think the GOP has almost at rock bottom. They are certainly, pooling from the bottom of the barrel these days.

I am a 20 year military veteran, a former police officer, I have never seen such vitriolic, pig-like behavior representing the Republicans. I am disgraced and ashamed as all Americans should be. We need more people like John McCain who are decent, civil and yet know how to stand their ground without acting like all the epithets they love attach to minorities and our President.

I believe I heard the governor make a comment comparing himself to King David. He believes he is picked by God. SC surely seems to have its own unique political style. Now it makes sense why we keep seeing Gov Sanford everyday: JOE WILSON. He knew that someone would eventually take the spotlight and he was right. They are very verbal politicians in that state and they have no reservations to speak. Both men need to go to Argentina and stay there. This kind of politics does not belong in this great USA.

Sanford will not go away because his ego, like many other politicians, is so large, he cannot believe he has done anything wrong. The reason why Mark Sanford won't go away is because he is THICK HEADED. He just can't seem to understand why the people of South Carolina would possibly want a man that carried on affair, allegedly used state computers to send love letter emails, dropped off of the face of the earth while south carolinians are facing some of the highest unemployment and forclosure rates in the country. During his disappearance he left the state without governance, or his where abouts. All the while refusing to take federal funds to extend unemployment, and refusing to take stimulous unless he could decide how it was spent. Maybe he would take the money if it he could impliment the Recovery and Vacation with your Mistress Act.

    Jack,
He (Sanford) like a select few of our politicians believe God chooses them for a mission to steer the Nation towards its pre-determined destiny. Nothing and no one has the power to remove them from this calling. And his moral character is irrelevant much like King David’s was to the biblical Glory of the Kingdom of Israel. He truly believes in his calling and believes he is immune to criticism and condemnation. Someone needs to make him “King” of his own “padded cell”.

Jack, you're missing what Sanford "says" he is.

God's Super-Secret Agent! He's a man of great Power in a position of Great Power! Who's the Greatest Power? God, of course! So logically, GOD wants him there (by his side, doing anything he wants) no matter what he does...

...or he wouldn't BE there! ("everything" is God's will) So- He's NOT leaving... until GOD makes him leave! God's NOT stopping him! So....

= Proof that God wants him there! Just like how the Sun goes up and sets... while I stand still, so therefore the Sun MOVES around the world!

Liars, con-men, and thieves ALL rationalize their actions using STUPID logic. That's pretty much WHY they turn to lying and stealing! Trying to BEAT the system and CON their 'marks'! Sanford's just an "un"-common Con-man. We've uncovered quite a few in the last 8 years.

Mark Sanford won't go away because he is a politician. He is by nature, an ego maniac. I feel sorry for his family: his wife, his kids, brothers, sisters, etc....and even him. He screwed up and knows it. If he had any self-respect he would resign. I bet he won't. He is an ego-maniac and thinks he can get away with it. Now with the LoudMouth Wilson event I'm guessing that any Dem. running against them can, and will win the next election. Sanford and Wilson ; you missed up, now live with it....in shame.

Gov. Sanford is selfish! Everything ends up being about him – HE had to leave SC on auto pilot to spend time with his soulmate in Argentina; HE will try to fall back in love with his wife; HE will not resign because he has already apologized to us the citizens of South Carolina and now HE will use every tool in his toolbox to fight what the state legislature and the ethics committee are trying to do to him. Hello Jack,

I am a South Carolinian, unfortunately. Governor Sanford still being governor has been as much of a puzzle to me as the Rubic cube. I wondered how he got re-elected after making the "tar baby" comment a few years back. Now, I am wondering how an adulturer, who used tax payers money for his flings, still has the title of Governor. Then it came to me-he lives in the "Bible Belt". A group of eutopic lands where we forgive our fellow man, no matter what the offense. Where we kill doctors who perform abortions, because we hate killing. Where we keep the old slave markets in better conditions than our schools. Where we fly the Confederate flag over our state courthouse because it doesn't support a treasonous group of people, but history. Where our elected officials have the best health care insurance anyone could have and they still haven't gotten treatment for their Tourette syndrome!

Sanford and now Wilson , SC you must have better and smarter folks down there to send to Washington. So what's the big deal? He lied about his trip to see his mistress...and then what else? Is that it? Even if you add that he got the trip paid for by the state of SC, he still is no worse than our Governer Jim Gibbons (NV), who, before he was even elected was accused of fondeling some poor woman in a parking garage while he was escorting her to her car. Then, when he was elected, was caught texting 100's of texts to his girlfriend(s) and was also photographed with a playboy model, hugging her at a local rodeo event... All while his poor wife was standing by his side. Disgusting! Now, get the GOP hot about how he (Gibbons) is representing them? So why should Sanford resign?

    Lisa from St. Paul,

In a way, you are correct. A lot of the limelight has been on his affair, much like Edwards. The difference is that Edwards was not a chief executive of a territory (be it a city, a state, or the country) who left his jurisdiction without leadership for nearly a week, and with no way to get in touch with him. That doesn't excuse Edwards from his flaws, but the main reason Sanford should go is not the affair, or even his misuse of state funds, but that week where he literally left his job without notice. That is called malfeasance in office.

    Jack,
He won't go away for the same reason as Ted Stevens, and Larry Craig. He belongs to the party of thievery and hypocrisy, the Republican party. A party of loud mouths who thinks it's okay to rudely yell "you lie" at the President during his address to congress. A party who sent us to war under false Pretense. Lied about spying on us and lied about torturing suspected captives. And now, a party whose chairman, Michael Steele, is using a true patriot's, Ted Kennedy, death to score political points by saying our the President used his letter for his own political gain. If Ted Kennedy were alive today, and I wish he were, he would slap Steele in the face for such comments. So I will answer your question with a question, Why won't the whole Republican Party go away? The country would be better off if they did!

    Maybe he thinks that as an elected official he has earned the right to keep his post – no matter what! Are we surprised? The saying " ... power corrupts ..." is more true than ever with a person with that type of mentality;

    or ...

Maybe there is a behavioral problem with South Carolina elected officials.

Either way, it's time for him to step down.

He is trying to last long enough for an even bigger scandal to come along and divert attention from his poor stewardship. Hopeing media attention witll be diverted and he can leave next election without as much disgrace. The local government there I am sure has real problems they need to address. They need to censure and shun him, but let the people dump him and give their attention to helping solve the problems of their voters. He is just another hippocrit claiming to have FAMILY Values to get votes while he demonstrates the weaknesses inherit in people.

Okay, Sanford campaigned as the devoted family man with strong moral fiber with a wife and kids. A common man just like his constituents...a man who would make the same decisions as any of his constituents would if they were governor.

Then Sanford ran off for a little Argentina hottie on the taxpayers dollars for several days was caught. His wife, kids, his state and the Republican party were completely embarrassed. He has to gall so say that he knows he has sinned but knows that god will forgive him.

I guess Sanford won't leave, because he is still the same man he was when he took office... an immoral cheating little sneak who thinks that the South Carolina collects taxes, fees and registration for his vacation, hot chicks and even hotter sex.

It is easy to understand why Gov Sanford will not resign. You need only read Jeff Sharlet “The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power” (Paperback) and the new, “The ABCs of C Street” August 18 2009 By Emily Belz, Edward Lee Pitts World magazine.
This explains the real non-traditional ideology of the Free Market republicans. Gov Sanford believes he has been chosen by God , not voters to be a leader. These “chosen” can do no wrong & worship a free market Jesus and their children are being groomed to be the next leaders. Ask Sen Coburn who was his “c” st mentor.
Gov Sanford believes that Normal moral laws don’t apply to him & other “C” st followers.
The secret Cabal on “C” street is the biggest story since Watergate and the press is silent. This is why America is sinking into the toilet.

I am for Sanford leaving office. He has been an embarrassment for his family and for his state.

I had to laugh when Mr. Cafferty was quoting Mark Sanford talking about not being pushed out of office, and he blurts out, "Wanna bet?" and continues on with his sentence. Good one.

I too think Sanford will be out of office. It's all about how much more embarrassment he wants to be for his family and state. His ego certainly matters more than his state and family. It is time for more constituents to come forward and let him know that the standards that he has set are NOT OK with you.

This guy is a liar and certainly hasn't done his job to the best of his abilities if he is off in another country shacking up with a mistress, all the while telling people he was doing something else. This is just pathetic for a governor of a state to behave this way.

Like 95% of the politicions and lawmakers today,he is a self-serving, ego-maniac, who has been decieving everyone so long, thta he has no moral compass and has decieved himself into believing he is the one. When will the public realize these guys think that we work for them, not that they work for us. This American system has become one of the worlds most corrupt.

We are long past the days when public shame has any impact. In response to public censure and disapproval, people would resign, and even leave town. Now we have youtube, and fifteen minutes of fame. He's in public office and he had an affair, ok...next? Impeach him for misuse of funds if you can, other than that, this will pass like it did for lots of others.

    Dear Jack,

I say the Governor be offered an exit strategy, but not the type he used at the infamous " Appalachian hike" which saw him outsourcing and exporting "family values". I say the Governor be offered a free state funded hike to the real Appalachian trail, to make it official that he indeed made it there . This will enable a more credible leadership in SC while he's away.

The hypocrisy that is in everyday politics is amazing. Gov. Sanford was one of the biggest cheerleaders when there were talks for then Pre. But now thats his affair is public, I guess that the act of adultery has fallen down the list of sins, I think its next to missing church, which is #99!

Why won’t South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford go away?

A pity the news media and in all probability the majority of the American public are more outraged over the governor's sexual indiscretions rather than allegations he misused government funds in connection with those indiscretions...the fact he has not gone away means he is entitled to a defense, a shock no doubt to the moralist's who believe he should burn for his sins, or worse...

There are more than a few who are a part of "The Family" and they believe God has appointed them to these position and what is happening now to the gov. is "persecutuon" and he will not leave.

Sanford should not want to be where the people that voted him in want him to resign. I am sure they would like to take that vote back if they could! The same with Joe Wilson what an embarrassment to the state of SC. What next Joe strapping on guns in Congress!! he should be impeached also!!! Does any one know for sure Sarah Palin wasn't born there? Another embarrassment!!

    Jack,

The SC Governor won't go away because the people (voters) of SC don't care that he cheated on his wife, lied about cheating on his wife, was derelict in his duties when he disappeared for days, lied about his whereabouts during those days, had his staff lie for him, used his staff to cover for his behavior, and the list goes on and on.

I mean we're talking about a State of people that vehemently wanted to hold onto a symbol of hatred and the worse time in America's history. A State with districts that vote into office crazy deranged and uninformed lunatics like Rep. Wilson.

Why won't the SC Governor go away? Take a walk down a Main Street in SC and you'll see your answer in the faces of the people, they don't care. Not even if they are boycotted and their economy goes spiralling into further despair, they just don't care about the good of the country.

Because he is a Republican from the South. They still think their party will rise again just like they believe the South will rise again. They are rising to the top alright- just like the stuff that floats in the toilet and they don't realize that just like the stuff in the toilet-THEY STINK. Come on, Jack. It’s obvious. The key to this story hasn’t changed. It’s the girlfriend in Argentina. He’s afraid of losing her. As long as Sanford holds on he’s the macho Governor of the powerful North American state South Carolina, first state to secede from the union. If he resigns he’s just a heterosexual Jim McGreevey: dull, ineffectual and uninteresting.

Jack, he wont go away because he doesn't have to. Since when does not behaving in his personal life make him unqualified as a professional? Are the morals police in charge down there?

From Wilson, to Sanford, to the Republican leadership down in S.C., it would be nice to see some more professionalism.

    Jack,

The governor believes, like so many in the Republican Party, that he is above reproach. He can tell others how to live their lives, that the bailout money is unnecessary for his state (despite the howling need for relief in that state), and generally act as if he has the inside tract on what is Right in the world. Arrogance of this level is looked upon as a virtue by republicans in general (Sarah Palin is another example of this type of thinking), and they just keep voting this character type into office. He will not resign, and despite all the talk, South Carolina will be stuck with him until at least the next election cycle (although he might be re-elected).

Sanford like all Republicans think they are above the law. Sanford has no respect for the law or the people of South Carolina. They should call the police cuff him and frog march him to the airport and send him to Argentina. Maybe he can be the governor in Argentina.

There are to many instances of repulicans displaying their arrogance and blatant disregaurd for civil discourse. At this very crucial point in American history once again this party has backed its self into another corner. It is so unfortunate that the media will not define to the general public the controversial points of this argument .I cant condeem these officials.I can only list them Palin, Steveson, the members of "C" St. Sandford and growing . They seem untouchable.
