What's behind Michelle Obama's surge in popularity?

FROM CNN's Jack Cafferty:

First Lady Michelle Obama is even more popular than her husband, who has a hefty majority of Americans supporting him. A new Gallup poll show's the first lady's favorable rating at 72 percent compared to 69 percent for the president.

Cafferty: People are drawn to this woman.

Also, Michelle Obama's unfavorable ratings are much lower than the president's - 17 percent for her versus 28 percent for him.

What a difference a year makes... On the campaign trail last winter and spring, Michelle Obama was at times considered a political liability. Some portrayed her as an "angry black woman," while others didn't like the way she talked about things like her husband's dirty socks. And many questioned Michelle's patriotism when she said she only recently became proud of her country.

But all that has changed... Another recent poll shows the first lady's favorability ratings are up 28 percent since the summer. The most striking part of the Michelle "surge" is that she's made the biggest gains among Republicans who viewed her negatively last year.

People are drawn to this woman; she is the real thing, and they get it. They like her focus on children and family, her devotion to her own daughters and husband, her visits to schools, soup kitchens, federal agencies, and her planting of the first White House vegetable garden since Eleanor Roosevelt.

Michelle Obama is rapidly moving to displace a couple of the more revered women of our recent past. The British media are positively beside themsevles over Mrs. Obama's visit; and they know something about how to get beside themselves. They are comparing our new first lady to both Princess Diana and Jacqueline Kennedy. Actually, she's cooler than either of them.

Here's my question to you: What's behind Michelle Obama's remarkable surge in popularity?

Interested to know which ones made it on air?

Tom from Switzerland writes:
A big open heart, intelligence, sincerity, compassion, knowledge, charm, straight-forwardness, a great sense of humor, a committed mother, natural beauty... Ok, ok, I'll stop.

Richard from McKinney, Texas writes:
Jack, Michelle Obama is popular right now because she is a new and novel thing that has not made major mistakes yet. Give her a little time. This too shall pass.

Kevin from Dallas writes:
I think Mrs. Obama's surge in popularity is that she's not acting like a politician. Her power doesn't come from who her husband is, so she's free to be her own woman. At the same time, she doesn't seem to feel the need to prove herself to everyone. She seems genuine, and is a good role model.

C. writes:
Jack, Michelle Obama looks great! We're all tired of looking at old white guys in D.C.

Mark from Oklahoma City writes:
The hyped-up, ultra-over-the-top, national media slobbering all over her "bare arms" and her over-blown "fashion sense" is the main reason, Jack. Her touching the Queen is something that even an Okie, back-woods hick like me would know better than to do.

Kate from Dallas writes:
People feel like they can relate to her. She could be your next-door neighbor. She is refreshing.

Louise from Alabama writes:
Humans are mostly water. She is pure electricity.

Star from Auburn, Ohio writes:
Jack, It all started when you told the world you had a crush on her. From your lips to the global ears of the many who now appreciate our brightest first lady in over four decades. One person can make a difference.

She just has class that hasn't really shown since Jakie. Not to say the other first ladies did not have have class that is not true at all. I believe
it is just how she carries herself and she does that very well.

I think its because she has the knack for conducting herself in a very dignified manner while giving off a sense of "down to earth" at the same time. And the fact that she is both intelligent and attractive doesn't hurt either. She has a smile that lights up the whole room when she walks in.

Michelle is a strong intelligent and outspoken woman. We saw that on the campaign trail. I believe she learned from Hillary's unfortunate mistake to not start trying to "change" things right away or too fast. The male dominated congress doesn't take to uppity women, so she's keeping a politically low profile, playing the first lady game and I hope someday soon we get to see the smart and sassy business woman she really is – the country has problems and we could use a woman's point of view.

I think it's primarily because there's been such a vacuum in the area of American sophistication for so long. Charm and a relaxed demeanor goes a long way. Contrived and queenly sayings, nods and rants are annoying and transparent.

I don't know where those high ratings are coming from I hear his approval ratings have dropped below 50%. I read many polls taken by Lou Dobbs CNN which the has Obama at 39% being able to resolve the financial crisis. Apparently the polls mentioned in this was taken by a liberal source.

How about the fact that she's genuine, natural, down to earth, is not afraid to get her hands dirty, is classy, smart, intelligent, educated, beautiful, inside and out. Quite a feat for a First Lady wouldn't you say Jack? Anyone who would plant a garden on the White House grounds is alright with me.

Jack: Michelle Obama first priority as First Lady is to her children, and the second priority is to her husband, President Barack Obama. The third priority is to be a cheer leader for those her husband depends on to run the government. Policy maker is not a title she wants or seeks, but if she had influence in decisions it would be education of our youth, and military spouce's who have to wear many hats while their loved one is deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. Popular you bet she is, and why not.

Like you said, Michelle Obama just GETS IT! She's as smart as her husband, as caring as her husband and it SHOWS! We finally have a real live couple in the White House! It's just GRAND and I can't wait to see more more of the both of them. Their girls are just adorable as well! It makes me feel more uplifted and that we can get out of this horrible mess we find ourselves in after the last long 8 grueling years! HIP HIP HOORAY!

Michelle, just as her husband, is a charismatic person. She is intelligent, sensitive, and an outstanding mother. She is an absolute groundbreaking role model for our country and the world beyond. None of the first ladies in the white house in the past 40 years have come close having the qualities that Michelle has. Look at the changes in the world impression of the United States since January 20th. This is not all President Obama’s doing. Michelle is a valued asset helping to transform the image of the United States.

She loves her children and truly loves and respects her husband.

She is a down to earth person, not all fake and snob. She seems like an ordinary sweet young lady. I think she is the kind of neighbor that I would like living by me. Face it, she's a new look in the White House. Whether old or young, all the other first lady's have been caucasian. She is also intelligent, witty and not at all the radical she was made out to be. She's not a wall flower like Laura Bush, nor threatening like Hillary Clinton and in a world of political and economic failure, she is a breath of fresh air.

It's simple. She can identify with anyone from the south side of Chicago to Buckingham Palace. I know her ex-governor thinks he is the embodiment of Ruyard Kipling but Michelle is really one of the people Kipling was thinking about when he wrote "IF."

The fact that she is a modern, confident woman, who has a loving husband, adorable children that are not spoilt, and who is not afraid of being approachable plays a large part in her popularity. Also, she is regarded as a positive role model: she works out, eats healthy food, relishes her family, is confident enought to mix couture clothes and off the rack clothes, and yet is intelligent and knowledgable.

I remember a lot of First Ladies, from Mamie Eisenhower to Jackie Kennedy (of course, look at MY name!), to Lady Bird Johnson, Pat Nixon, Nancy Reagan, Roslyn Carter, Betty Ford, Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton, and Laura Bush. Each has brought their own unique stamp to the position of First Lady although some have been more memorable than others. I think that Michelle Obama will also make a unique spot for herself, and be regarded as special.

For me, it is simply that she appears comfortable in her own skin, as the saying goes. She seems to be a perfectly normal woman, mother, and wife in an unusually abnormable circumstance.

The whole brouhaha around her so-called 'unpatriotic' demeanor was simply contrived for news sensationalism and political mischief. Most Americans clearly understood what she said and the context in which she said it. So, 'much ado about nothing', as is generally the case with these types of things during political campaigns.

She is relatively young, clearly vibrant, engaging, and well-meaning, from all outward appearances.

No mystery, then, with her popularity, in my opinion.

I met Michelle Obama while she was on the campaign trail and found her to be as remarkable then as she is as the first lady. I took the negative hoopla as the other side taking small snippets of something she did and said and labeled her accordingly. I was proud of her as the candidates wife, but I have to say even I am totally blown away with First Lady Michelle Obama.

You already said most of it, Jack. But I'll add a few more: highly intelligent and highly educated, unaffected, down-to-earth, lover of J.Crew, a power mom, and a power wife. She is fiercely protective of her husband and her children. She likes her new job and has embraced it, rather than accept it as a necessary nuisance.
Those arms! That megawatt smile! Jack, for crying out loud, what's not to like? And anyone who is up to the challenge of hugging the stodgy Queen has my admiration.

When you are beautiful, intelligent, just as well spoken as your very articulate husband, dedicate your life to public service while raising two adorable girls, and representing the U.S. as first lady with dignity and grace.....what's not to like? Michelle Obama brings as much to the whitehouse for President Obama as Hillary Did for President Clinton. They come as a team and I think most of the world wants them to succeed.

I think her appeal lies in the fact that she's an individual. She says things that aren't always polished–yet she's capable of being very articulate. She doesn't look or act or dress "safely" which is a departure from (meaning no disrespect) the Laura Bush's or Cindy McCain's of the world. She clearly loves her husband and adores her children. She shows impatience, humor, joy, fun, and fatigue–there isn't a "shell" or an act. She's clearly smart but you get a sense she'd be fun to spend time with. What's not to love?

Michelle is just now being seen for the woman I saw she was during the campaign. She is smart, considerate, and family oriented. It was an ugly campaign tactic to paint her as an "angry black woman" and only those blinded by fear and envy remain incapable of basking in the refreshing light that is our new first lady.

Jack – I think Mrs. Obama is an example of what all women should want to be. She's smart, graceful, trhoughful, attractive, sincere, loving, a great wife, mom and most of all she is her own person.

I'm loving the different things she is bringing to the White House, how she's daring to be different in a good way even down to her clothes. By the way who says one has to wear a little suit all the time.

I think that Mrs. Obama is the epitome of grace and womanhood. She embraces motherhood. In addition, she is just as knowledgeable, smart and educated as Barak Obama. She gives ladies, both Republican and Democrat, something to pattern themselves after. I have pictures of her posted at work because she inspires me to greatness.

She's a refreshing change from the "plastic" first wives we've had in the White House. Not that I think the previous first wives behavior was any fault of their own, it was what was expected of them and they filled the role

Mrs. Obama is the unexpected. I don't think we've seen anything yet.
She's not playing a role, we're getting the real thing here, and people are excited about that.

It's people like you and your buddies in the MSM Jack. Michelle Obama isn't doing anything that hasn't been done by many First Ladies before her. However, thanks to your 24/7 coverage, people just see more of it. How many times did you show Laura Bush visiting a school as the lead on prime time news? As a former teacher I'm sure she visited hundreds of schools. She doesn't need a press secretary; she has thousands of them in the MSM. As one of the 17% who aren't impressed I wish you'd tone it down.

The more I've seen of Barack Obama, the more I've come to respect and admire him. The same is true of Michelle. They are in the news constantly now, but a year ago, that wasn't the case and too many people jumped to the wrong conclusion about these two for awhile.

But seeing the two of them together ... hubba hubba! What a turn-on! People finally get to see a great example of two people being sexually attracted to each other as a part of their mutual respect and admiration for each other – great example to set for humanity. I dig it!

She has always been great. Hillary just tried to take a page from Republicans by painting her as scary–the "angry black woman". America is getting to know her for who she is and not the filter of Republicans who murky the media.

B/c, like her husband, they are honest, humble, down-to-earth, smart, funny, and compassionate. They don't talk a good (and hypocritical) game about family values, they actually live it (unlike a certain doomed party I know). Everybody can see all of these characteristics in Michelle. That is why her poll numbers are so high.

Even though the media as usual, is trying to create a gaffe b/c reporting on postitive stuff doesn't fit their bring-down-the-Obamas game plan, it is clear that the world so far adors her and her husband. Her husband settle a dispute btwn the Chinese and French head. That is the Obama family, with the rock Michelle.

It's the first time in a generation where we have a First Lady acting like.... a First Lady. Hillary turned some people off because she was over involved in government, and Laura turned some people off because she came off like a wax sculpture. Michelle is neither of these and I think that is very comforting to most Americans.

What I'd really like to know is, who are those 17% of the people who don't like her, and why in the world don't they? What possible thing has she done or said that they don't like? I think that Michelle Obama (and the President) are some of the most genuine down to earth individuals to have ever served as President and First Lady in my life time. People are attracted to people who are real, who are really the cliche, "what you see is what you get." I believe Americans are not used to seeing that quality (realness) in their leaders. Mrs. Obama's humble, middle-class up bringing has prepared her for this role and her background and warm personality serves to remind us all of the values that has always personified the greatness of our people and our country.

The simple reason her popularity has increased so much: the public has gotten to see the real woman. As the country has gotten to know her, some stereotypes just didn't hold true. Michelle is very authentic, honest, and confident–and she does a great job of keeping things real. Her husband has flaws too! Her kids have to make their beds too! She is in touch with us normal folks...she knows what it means to struggle, to work, and how hard it can be. I am proud of how Michelle is representing our country.

Mrs. Obama is a smart, intelligent, highly educated yet a caring, empathetic and down to earth professional woman who did not forget her origin and struggles. She is like just like a regular woman from next door. People from all walks of life find something common with her and can see themselves in her. The shift in public opinion just make the point that people can't see the real person through the media. They see what media wants them to see. Now that people are observing her without the smoke of a nasty presidential political campaign and observing her deeds, they are seeing the real Mrs. Obama and liking what they are seeing.

Jack, the lady who is liked by even a tough guy like you, should not have any problem in being liked by ordinary people.

Michelle Obama is what every woman would like to be, intelligent, great sense of humor, in an obviously loving relationship, a devoted mother. She seems able to handle it all without obsessing over her role in life. She is secure in her own identity.

She is the most natural and relaxed first lady since, well, I'm not old enough to remember. She's the best. Every mother would want a daughter like her, and every daughter would want a mother like her.

You mean besides the personality, humor, intelligence, and the ability to related to regular people?

The fact we have to go back to Mrs. Kennedy shows the lack of a leading First Lady in some time. Both Mrs. Bushes nice but always safe; Mrs. Clinton perhaps a little polarizing; Mrs. Regan if astrology is your thing; Mrs. Carter plain cloth coat.

Let's celebrate a First Lady with some polish.

She's the quintessential example of what a modern educated, empowered women is. She's the complete opposite of our current culture of vacuous talentless female celebs, famous for no apparent reason.

I respect and admire her, for achieving success on her own terms, while managing her role as a mother and wife with grace and love. She's strong without giving up on her own feminine power.

Michelle Obama's surge in popularity is based on her substance, despite the cheap attack political hacks tried to inflict on her.

First of all, her favorables are higher than Barack's because she's not doing politically controversial things. She's also beautiful most all the time since she was cautioned to never think hard or frown on camera, and because she has good taste. Finally, both she and Barack represent the demise of phony, 'proper' facades. We're hungry for authenticity, and she's got it.

She appears to be a nice lady that happens to be the wife of our president. Nothing more or nothing less. Most first ladies do the very things that she is doing. Where do you get the statistics that indicate that Michelle Obama has made the greatest gains in favorability with republicans? How do you know that the British are beside themselves? Jack, you can say anything you want to on your blog, without having to prove it. Do you still have that crush on Michelle? If so, it shows with this biased reporting. The media is behind her surge in popularity. If the media portrays a person as a good person for a good bit of time that person will become popular. I don't remember either first lady from the bush family getting as much news time. This is the same way Barack became so popular so quickly.

You are right on the money, Jack. Michelle Obama is the very real thing. She has a strong sense of who she is and likes herself, loves her children and loves her husband. She has staying power as well and will be as popular when her husband has finished his work for us. The Queen of England's spontaneous show of affection for her was just another prime example of her charisma! What a woman! And she is ours!

She's AUTHENTIC Jack, that is what people are starting to realize. She tells the truth, doesn't gloss coat things and you are right, she is far cooler (nicer) in my opinion than either Mrs Kennedy or Princess Diana. She doesn't court the media with phony ploys however, when the media surrounds her, she is cordial, honest and giving of her time. She protects her children because she is a good mother, they are not paraded out for all to ooh and aah over, and she is in love with her husband, and he with her and it shows. I always believe that Laura Bush would of liked to give 'ol George, a good boot up the bum sometimes, there were times when I think she found life very difficult. I hope Michelle Obama doesn't lose her honesty while spending time in Washington.

Jackie O is a class act in her own right, but she was born into high society and culture. Michelle’s spirit comes directly from the goodness of her heart, not because of being a product of South side Chicago, but in spite of.

What's behind her remarkable surge? Gee, could it simply be that she is a remarkable person? She uses 3+syllable words. She dresses reasonably; she's a lawyer (extremely successful-respected); she's a devoted mother; wife: she's physically fit; she walks the walk on being "green" – what else do you need? Other than that it might just be that the media/entertainment business would rather put a giant spotlight on what she's wearing rather than doing in-depth investigative reporting. I wonder...

In this era of "reality television" it is all too easy to become anesthetized by the faux reality upon which all that TV garbage is based. It's positively stifling. The fact that President Obama is not in a campaign against two of the most unscruptulous campaign groups in the United States, the Clintons and the GOP. It also has a little to do with the media who was so happy at the so many people followed the campaign, which helped ratings. Michelle Obama was unfairly demonized and she was not even running for office. Now, people are taking a an unbiased look at First Lady Obama and see her for exactly what she is. She is a supportive wife, active & involved parent, and very intelligent woman.

Hate to say it, Jack, but it may be relief. Many - not me - may have feared that, because Mrs. Obama is a well-educated, professional woman, she would be a Hillary-like First Lady injecting herself into policy. Instead, though, she is taking a more traditional path, caring for her girls first and foremost and adopting causes, like veterans' families and healthy eating family-style, that are more traditional for a First Lady. Makes no difference to me . . . she rocks whatever path she takes in my book!!!

Michelle Obama's success comes from her authenticity, passion, warmth and most of all intelligence. She constantly reminds herself where she comes from, what she stands for, and what makes her to be where she is today.

As her style and taste of fashion – I give her 100, A+. She makes her cloth looks good (the intelligent way to dress) while Sarah Palin and Cindy McMain use high price designer clothing to make them look good (the desperated insecure personality)

    Hi Jack,

Michelle Obama comes across as an everyday, practical and down to earth woman who obviously loves her husband and adores her children. A lot of women can relate to her. We know how hard it can be to wear all of the hats a woman must wear at the same time whether as a parent, spouse, a working professional, a volunteer and daughter to aging parents.

She and her husband seem to thoroughly enjoy their new role and when deplaning in Europe it seemed that they were so happy that they wanted to pinch themselves.

Michelle is gracious, kind and yet she is also a no nonsense woman. When she says her family will pull weeds in their vegetable garden you can betcha that everyone, including her husband, will be doing just that.

Michelle is an inspiration to all women. She and President Obama are exactly what our nation needs right now.

She sets a good example, Jack. She's admirable. Also, her sense of style has been favorable. This First Lady is independent and self-reliant.

What's behind her surge in popularity is the fact that people have come to realize she is her own woman. She has a brain, speaks her mind and above all, she's a mother and as we all know, real mothers and good mothers take no crap. Not even from the President.

People who make harsh judgements of others often do so because they are reacting to pre-conceptions and stereotypes, in this case fueled by conservative talk radio and bloggers. But these same people often change their tune when they better get to know the person they are judging and pre-conception is replaced by reality. It's Ms. Obama's just reward that just by being herself, she is belying those conservative bloggers and radio people who had made the ugly comments in the first place.

Michelle Obama has already set a new standard for first ladies in the areas of style, charisma, humility, and humanity. Now even Oprah, a de facto leader of American women, is sporting a Michelle Obama hairdo. And Oprah ain't bad herself!

  153. Ugonna Wosu

Michelle was always a wonderful woman. All those Repubs last year didn't want to give her a chance, but it was obvious how, like her husband, extraordinarily incredible she is. She also has the easier job compared to Barack, who as President has already had to make tough decisions that have ticked many off. Michelle gets to play itself and stay likeable. God bless them both.

Very simple Super Old Dude. She has become the First Lady of the people, not to mention that she’s a stone-cold fox. She’s proud, yet humble, educated, but not out of touch, and she’s a dedicated mom and wife. It’s difficult to believe that she grew up in the roughest part of Chicago. Mrs. Obama is a strong woman, a perfect role model with a lot to offer, especially to those who have historically been disenfrachised. It’s not hard to imagine when you examine the First Lady’s prowess that God is a black woman.

About Michelle's popularity.....I think it's simple. She's authentically who she is. She doesn't adapt to criticism or to the myriad of expectations others have of her. She's the real deal and I think people always respond positively to that characteristic...rare as it is!

From a woman's perspective, I find her position as the president's partner, not simply a helpmate, admirable. It's clear that she is a strong, smart woman who holds her own and who is committed to, and capable of ,making a significant personal contribution to the future of our country.

She is the real deal. She's not pretentious. She doesn't play to the rich and famous nor play in the political circles outside her realm of First Lady. A person that other people can rally around for any particular cause and that's powerful. Jack, you'll just have to get in line with the rest of us. You aren't the only one with a crush.

I never quite understood the original negative response that some people had to Michelle Obama...I pretty much attributed it to "knee jerk" response based on media sound bites tring to characterize her as something she wasn't in the first place.

Now, over time, people have had the opportunity to see her, to listen to what she has to say. Not only is she smart and lovely, she KNOWS who she is, makes her own decisions (rather than "decide by poll"), she's compassionate, articulate, witty, and down to earth. Frankly, what's not to like!!!

What's behind Michelle Obama's popularity is exposure. She is what we call in the black community: A Strong Black Woman. And the exposure is allowing the world to see exactly what that is. Some of our women fall short of what a strong black woman is, but Michelle is the stereotype prototype.

She's fashionable, a mother, smart, young, pretty, and our nation's first black first lady. Surely that's more than enough to justify such interest. Not to mention she's married to one of the most popular world leader's in office today.

She is not responsible for policy and she doesn't try to intervene in that arena. However, she is not "passive", understands where she can make an impact.... the vegetable garden was brilliant; her natural effusiveness, generosity, focus on her family and the families of us all, have given average Americans a role model; one who loves and is not ever afraid to show her love. Hey, she's terrific!

It doesn't hurt that Obama said she is "smarter, stronger and gives better speeches". There's that and being the first person to be on the front of O Magazine with Oprah.

I think there is a chance she could be President one of these days.
Last i heard Obama still had an approval rating in the eighties in Canada. I don't know if there was a poll on the first lady, but I imagine it would be the same or even higher.

She is more popular than the other coz she is genuine... I can trust her and I know she is not only doing what is expected to do, but that all of this just comes naturally to her.

Jack, it's not that hard to figure out. People who didn't know Michelle before are finding out that she's an intelligent, classy woman who, along with her classy intelligent husband, are serving as the first couple in the White House in a long time that people can actually look up to as yes, even adult role models. I'm writing from BC, Canada. I think Michelle O is such an incredible person – she's a mom, she's a cause carrier and she has a smile that makes EVERYONE within 500 yards smile. She is real, she's smart and she is so fast on her feet – I can't wait to hear her speak everytime she gets to. I'm 6'3" – and I bet she's close – so she still has a commanding presence. Her and the Pres are just such a breath of fresh air. America has had this real "red neck" not real smart image growing for the past while – good to see that turning around!

Michelle Obama's surge in popularity is not at all surprising. She has been our First Lady less than three months and she has just knocked the socks off everybody with her warmth, intelligence, humor, common sense and fierce devotion to her family. She's saying all the right things. It's about time that someone is saying that is ok to go to school, not cut class and work hard. "It's cool to be smart" Hopefully this message reaches both parents and children regardless of demographic. Based on the poll I'd say it has.

I've know Michelle was amazing for a very long time. The rest of the country is just a little slow catching up. I'm not sure if it's logistically possible, but I can see her as the first female president. She is my role model, and posses the qualities I hope to find in a future wife. I'm glad everyone else finally figured it out.

It is obvious to me what is behind her surge. Barack Obama. Otherwise, she is just about as accomplished (in terms of mothering and career) as are millions of other women in the US and around the world. In fact, the one woman who deserves to get the surge is Marion Robinson, Michelle's mother. It is the now first granny who has given her daughter so much committment and left her daughter Michelle free to pursue her career, and now her "first ladyship." A lot of mothers, given that luxury could achieve a lot, and they often do. But everyone doesn't get that attention because they are not married to such a high profile man who is adored the world over.

It is new to the American public to see a woman, black or white, speak out strongly, firmly, and truthfully on what she believes – not necessarily what her husband nor her party believes – nor always exactly what the public wants to hear- but what she honestly feels and thinks about the question being asked of her. She is the model, the mentor and the woman that all women aspire to be, both professionally and personally, as well as humbly.

You the media and your inappropriate, fixation/glorification of her. I personally don't care for her and I'm OK with that because I don't have to. I didn't vote for her...I voted for her husband.

What's with Michelle Obama?–we're so amazed because she's not the typical celebrity we know all too well– a distorted ego with a phony image. Michelle is authentic, kind, intelligent and basically, an evolved human being (as is her husband). This is not the first time I've been proud of my country. I've been proud at times and disappointed at times over my 64 years as an American. But this is the first time in my adult life I've been THIS proud. It's been a long time and it feels good!!! Bless you, Michelle!

Jack, she's the "real deal." She's smart, down-to-earth, witty, and her family is the most important thing in her life above all else. These are values that have been sorely lacking in our society for at least the last generation. Our dirty little secret has been that while we have inwardly craved these values, it's been more cool to outwardly disdain them. Hopefully having the Obamas as role models we can get back to being a more compassionate society.

We are proud of her as well as our President as we watch them fight the entire rest of the world to improve our position that has been so tainted. God Bless them both as they represent us. They WILL BE SUCCESFUL in their efforts to make things right.

She was a victim of the bumpersticker mentality of the campaign, the mindless, unreflective venting of ignorance. The change is due, as it so often is, to the erosion of opinionism by actual fact or data – in this case michelle obama's good nature, good works, and demonstrated dignity – she's embarrrassed the cranks. The same, in the other direction is true of sarah palin whose character, demonstrated in her day-to-day conduct has become less and less appealing. Moral: take a deep breath America and pay and pay attention.

Michelle is about six feet tall, planted a "victory" garden (even wielding a shovel herself), has an elegant manner, is a brilliant lawyer. And, oh yeah–she loves the President of the United States and her kids. She is the first "normal" first lady aince Eleanor Roosevelt, and her presence is an immense contributor to her husnband's savvy manner/ As the Bible says. love covers a multitude of sins. So if Barack makes a false move, her love will cover it.

Perhaps Mrs. Obama is popular among Britons because they have never heard her speak, or read her university thesis. She is a bitter, hate-filled woman, and I base this on her own writings, not anything else.

She communicates with everyone regardless of age, religion, race or even politics in a realistic, one-on-one manner. She’s classy, very intelligent and can relate to about any situation. Even if you don’t always agree with her, you love her anyway. She’s the girl-next-door that made good and didn’t let it affect her.

Michelle Obama is behind Michelle Obama's popularity. She's articulate, educated, funny, humble, candid, loyal, and lovely. Most importantly, however, is that she openly devotes herself to what she wants for everyone - a solid, loving family.

We are still in a partisan world and while almost every died in the wool republican is required to say that they disapprove of our Democratic President, 69%, or most democrats and independants approve. Michelle Obama’s popularity just goes to show that even those republicans who disapprove of the President, can’t keep the party face when asked about Michelle.

It's simple. We got to know her. The first time I saw her on Oprah a year before he declared, I didn't have a good impression, she seemed aloof and a bit cold. Then I saw her at the convention & she blew me away. A genuine & sincere soul will shine through. I'm very proud that she's our First Lady. President Obama's success is directly proportionate to her strengh of character.

Well just compare her to some of the others! Barbara Bush seemed very distant and more like a grandmother, than a lst lady. Laura Bush had that phoney smile plastered on her face and she definitly looked frigid certainly not appealing at all. Hillary was the first that let us know she really had brains, more like Eleanor Roosevelt. Michelle tops them all because she is smart like Hillary, down to earth and very approachable. She is someone we can all identify with and yet still look up to her for her for her smarts, her breathtaking charm and how up to date and truely modern she is. After two years of Barack, lets nominate her as the first Black Woman President!

Jack, This is a common phenomenon. Our society has a fear of brown skinned people, until you get to know them. Brown skinned people have to pierce through prejudice much more than lighter brown skinned people to be accepted. The color brown has a whole psychological thing going so think of Michelle has raising our mental perceptions and attitudes towards brown skin. She is a double wide load who goes out digging in the garden wearing Jimmy Choos (that is what was reported in the press), yeah we all do that, I do that regularly, slip on my Jimmys and go dig the garden, give me a break. Although Michelle may have said some contraversial comments during the campaign she has let her actions speak since becoming first lady. Its refreshing to finally have a woman in the White House who is using her position in a way no other Caucasian First Lady has in decades. She sure has done more than Laura Bush! I like Michelle Obama but I believe the reason she is so popular is simply because "so-called" journalists would rather talk about how pretty her arms are than focus on anything of any substance. There is so much going on in the world that people should know about and those who should be reporting it are too busy gushing over how Michelle Obama touched the Queen.

Simply put, Michelle Obama is a class act. She has managed to make the impossible look possible and easy...........being a wife, and a mother with a full time job. She did and continues to do what so many women are currently doing or aspire to do. Manage the chaos of a family with work, and what is even more amazing is she does it with style and grace. Is it any wonder why we are amazed? Mrs. Obama is my idol.
Love the President, but as a single woman I see Mrs. Obama and think hmmmmmm......maybe it's possible to have it all.

What a farce news has become. It's like a medium for appeasing the public, giving us the illusion of action, selling us on ideals that the politicians feign to support. Then, big surprise when the people get outraged at the daily contradictions, the rift between speeches and reality. Who cares who the politicians want to blame for AIG, who the ceo of GM is, or how much the Queen of England is taken with Michelle Obama.? Let me know when something is being resolved; I am not interested in excuses, this little dance of unanimous outrage and futility. How has it gotten this way? That our land of the free has become so tangled up in its own red tape it is tripping itself?

Mrs. Michelle Obama epitomizes the "I'm every woman" refrain of the popular song by the same title. You look at her, you hear her speak and you instantly feel her warmth and generosity of spirit. I am enthrallled by both she and her husband. I am a 59 year old woman and I couldn't be more proud of them if I had given birth to them myself. Of course I am too young to have been their parents.

Michelle Obama embodies our American values – love of family, patriotism, deeply-rooted spiritual beliefs, service to others, especially those less fortunate. Now, as the First Lady, she has been given an opportunity to bring to fruition through her actions many of the tenets of President Obama's campaign platform. She has done well and I am proud of her.

Does it not feel wonderful to have the world embrace this beautiful, stylish, intelligent, witty, warm woman that represents our nation on the world stage so well? You bet it does!

Having lived abroad, I know firsthand what it's like to be considered, an "ugly American." With the Obamas leading the helm, I think we are "ugly" no more. Thank you Mrs. Obama and thank you, Mr. President for your representation.

    Well jack,
Michelle Obama has something I think I haven't seen since Nancy Reagan when I was a kid. She can connect or attempt to connect with people of all levels and of every age group. I think she carry's a sense of elegance about her and she's definately a ladies man. first ladies between 88 and 2008 were either too old (Barabara), to rigid/masculine (Hilary) or had a strange fake smile that you can almost see the Joker from batman in their face (Laura).

The Liberal Media is behind it Jack ( including you ). I don't know any Republicans that care for her. As a Independent I don't know any Independents that care for her either.

I know a lot of Democrats that love her. Which goes to show your polls

    there opinion on the Obama's.

To compare Michelle Obama to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is a total joke. An just by reading the replies in this very blog most that are blogging to you are Liberals.

Everyone knows Michelle Obama's popularity surge is a result of her well-toned arms! The media has made this very clear.

But in all seriousness, her popularity surge is a result of the positive image she continues to portray while among the American people. The reason she is also gaining approval among Republicans is because the strong American values she is known for (i.e. devotion to family, children, etc) are non-partisan.

what,s ,behind Michell Obama, popularity is that she is the real deal.
She has the best thing in the world going for her. She had lots of love ,growing up and she knows that she is truly loved by her husband, and she has nothing to gain, or prove by being phoney .

She spends her own money for her own clothing and OH !! does she wear them so well. The Republican Party in itself is totally phoney and so use to Nancy Regans, even Marie Shiver , who I think is very real even though she grew up with money all of her life . Michell, is so wonderful compared to watching all the old prunes before her.

Other countries especially Britain are thrilled with Michelle Obama because she portrays a strong woman who is a minority. Many countries around the world had a past view of the United States as having only a white government. The reality is this: She's new.

While she does remind one of fabled pasts with Jackie Kennedy and Nancy Reagan, playing the bright socialite hostess, it's really because she's a new face that we've all been longing for. Laura Bush was a great First Lady, but she had one thing that stands in her way when it comes to the "WOW" factor; God help her, she's married to George Bush! After 8 years of that nut, we all just want to forget every bit of his Presidency.
