What should GOP say to Hispanic voters?

NEW YORK (CNN) - The Republican presidential candidates will square off again Sunday night, this time in an attempt to woo Hispanic voters.

The debate will be translated simultaneously into Spanish and broadcast live from the University of Miami by the "Univision" network.

This could be very interesting. This debate comes at the same time a new poll suggests Hispanic voters are returning to the Democratic party after several years of drifting toward the Republicans. The Pew Hispanic Center found that by 57% to 23%, Hispanic registered voters favor Democrats over Republicans.

One expert tells the "South Florida Sun Sentinel" that so far in this presidential campaign, the Republicans have quote "handled the Hispanic vote very callously." He points to the Republicans' rhetoric on illegal immigration as off-putting to this bloc of voters. On the other hand, it's exactly what a lot of Americans who are sick and tired of illegal aliens pouring into this country want to hear.

So the candidates will be called on to perform a delicate dance. Say things that will appeal to Hispanic voters without making other Americans angry by appearing to be sucking up to them.

Hispanics only make up about 9% of the nation's voters. But, and this is a big but, they make up a larger share of voters in a lot of the swing states, including places like Florida.

Here’s my question to you: What should the Republican presidential candidates say to Hispanic voters at Sunday’s debate?

I think the GOP candidates should tell Hispanics that they fully support LEGAL immigration into the country. They should tell Hispanic voters that they do not endorse illegal immigration. It is a shame that the word "illegal" has lost such of its meaning.

The reality of the situation is that the Republican Party has become a party of exclusivity. It is the country club of the United States that caters simply to a rich tiny minority that concentrates on making white protestant men wealthy. Hispanics, understand that they are not represented and at best are seen by the Republicans as second class citizens. To Hispanics there is no rational urge to support a party that has done nothing in its history to support or encourage the Hispanic community to trust in their services. Republicans "Handled the Hispanic vote callously", because to them Hispanics cost more than that which they can contribute to there campaign of totalitarianism.

The Candidates should tell the Hispanic voters the truth about how they feel on illegal immigration and not try and dance around the issue. Hispanic voters are Hispanic American citizens illegal aliens are not. These Hispanic voters came to America in the correct manner, LEGALLY and they will understand legal immigration versus illegal immigration and they will also understand how illegal it is hurting them. These people are Hispanic not stupid.

Hispanic votes generally vote Democrat. People who have their minds set on a party rarely pay attention to the other side. It took me a long time to even consider viewing a Democrat debate on TV. Younger viewers don't think online polls are "hip", older voters don't know about YouTube or MySpace, many immigrants don't have a computer or cable to see the campaign on CNN...so, the most important thing for the GOP is to endorse this by saying "We care!" In the past, republican's get the bad reputation of not caring about minorities, but it is insanely important that we convince them that they need us as much as we need them. They should stress that Illegal's take away their jobs too. They need to know they are an important resource in this country, like the Irish, Polish, German, and Jewish immigrants before them, Hispanics are vital to this economy...just as long as they are legal. We need to earn their respect and use every resource we have to get their attention.

GOP shouldn't need to say anything to get the Hispanic vote. Hispanic has flourished with GOP in charge ~ especially the illegal ones. No wait, the illegal ones need the Democrats in power to get the vote. GOP can only say "you're welcome" and move on, then maybe start worrying about the 'Born in the USA' vote which is also in jeopardy...

I think it doesn't matter what language you speak you can still be an American. For people to say that it is un-American to speak some other language in a debate is retarded. I watch my Canadian government debate in the house of commons all the time and they go back and forth between French and English. Which is translated so that everyone can understand. In the UN they go back and forth and they have translators. On the internet we have things like 'BabelFish'. So what is the big problem in American that has all your citizens so worried!?

What should the GOP tell Hispanics? Easy:

    1) If you're here legally, we want your support. We're for low taxes and limited government, freedom of the individual and free enterprise.

    2) If you're here illegally, we're going to find you and kick you out of this country as we're going to be a nation of laws again if I'm elected

If I was a republican running for president I would tell the hispanic vote "You aren't mexican or spanish, you are Americans. I am here to represent you. I don't support anything illegal, illegal immigation including. If we need to change the process, then let's change the process. Americans come from all cultures, together we make rules to live by, and we change them when the majority says so."

Jack...what should the Republican candidates say to Hispanics on Sunday?
They should tell them there WILL NOT be a path to citizenship in this country.
They WILL be deported for breaking the laws of being here illegally
And they WILL NOT be able to abuse our environment, education, health care and benefits system any longer.
It may not get the Pubs the vote, but at least they would be truthful in reflecting what the American public wants.
This, in turn, would then lead to more votes from Independents and those that are still waffling.

Whether it's the Republicans or Democrats it would be wonderful to see a coalition to help try to solve the problem of illegal immigration. On the one hand, it's an economic problem – we have taken advantage of their cheap labor and they have benefited from higher wages than in Mexico. On the other hand, what they did was illegal, although our law enforcement has turned a blind eye for the past 30 years. Given the lack of enforcement, we were in fact inviting people to come in.

I don't know the answer, but I do know that it's time to solve the problem. However, posturing won't solve anything. I would love to courage and creativity. I guess I'm dreaming – these are politicians after all.

There is absolutely NOTHING any Republican candidate can say to me on Immigration to make me vote for a Republican. All of the Republican colors have come through with scathing clarity! They only want our vote, but would rather not live amongst us or associate with us. They will let us do their dirty work, clean their houses, their hotel rooms and toilets, but we are not good enough to share in the common good or wealth supposedly available to all Americans!

I think they should just give a direct answer. They are applying for the job that REPRESENTS the American people. Tell the voters (Hispanic or otherwise) what you're going to push if you get elected and stick to it. All politicians say what they are "going" to do but with the parties doing everything they can to thwart the other's efforts, nothing gets done. There's your answer...tell them you're going to do nothing.

I wish, for just one election, candidates would not worry about what to say to this group or that. Just ONCE I'd like to see them all just tell us what they really and truly believe in, and what direction they really think we should be going in. As Will Shakespeare said so many years ago: "This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man." Who could say it better?

They should tell them to stand up for what's right instead of following suit with their race or heritage. As a black man I am forced to do the same thing everyday. It is easy to defend your race, but it takes true courage to tell your own when they are in the wrong.

The Republicans need to learn to articulate the difference between legal and illegal immigriation. These people are not refugees, they are simply people who had a choice to break the law or do it the right way and chose to break the law, and circumvent the process that all legal immigrants must go through.

The Republicans must get the message across somehow that this is not about race or ethnicity. It is about putting the foot down on people who choose to break the first law of entering this country, and that doing this is good for everybody already here, however they may have got here in the past.

They should make the point that our borders are wide open to terrorists. If these people cared about this country they would look past the color of their skin and support secure borders.

This is not to say nothing should be done with the guest worker program. That is clearly in need of an overhaul.

it really doesn't matter what they tell the hispanic voters. pandering doesn't respect demographics. we can be sure they will tell what ever lies they feel will attractr the votes of the hispanic comunity and theyu will have no honest committment to follow thrun on anything they say. they just need to be careful they dont aleniate the citizens of the nation any more than they already have. I think they should say where they REALLY stand on the subject. You can't be on both sides of the fence (no pun intended), and let the votes fall where they may. This subject is not one that runs along party lines, but very different personal views. You can't play to the vote on this issue, because it will alienate voters regardless of thier carefully chosen words. Suck it up, tell the truth about where they stand, and hope enough voters agree. It is probably why they are losing imigrant votes, because they have seen enough BS on the farms to know BS when they here it!

The Republicans should extol how much they enabled Mexican American's relatives and friends still in Mexico by encouraging and supporting US employers to employ illegals and hamstringing the Border Patrol and police by underfunding and undermanning them and depressing legal US worker wages to enhance the employers profits. The rich get richer off the backs of the workers. Throw the fatcat special interest lobbyists out by electing John Edwards!

Jack, What they will say and what they should say are two different animals. Though many in the GOP wouldn't oppose the Dream Act in theory, they just can't bring themselves to go along with it for fear of distancing themselves from the anti-immigrant hardliners. I suspect they will preach the benefits of attracting bright young talent and then if elected, will summarily ditch any hope illegals like the Gonsalez brothers from Miami have of becoming productive members of society.

The GOP simply needs to realize that they are NEVER going to get the majority of the Hispanic vote. Republicans are finally starting to realize (For the first time..) that in order to beat a Democrat in 2008, they need to be tough on illegal immigration. My prediction is they will all be tough on illegal immigration in this debate. Why pander to a group of people that aren't going to vote for you and at the same tiem upset your supporters?

Believe me...a tough stand on immigration will bring over independents and blue collar Democrats that are feeling the wage pinch brought on by cheap labor. In the past, Big Business lobbied the Republicans to be soft on immigration in order to get the cheap labor. Now politicians are realizing that in order to get elected they have to be tough on immigration. Look at McCain!!! He goes soft on immigration and he is knocked out of the race before it even starts. Look at Hillary and the drivers license fiasco. The poll stated that 70% of Americans were against DL's for illegal immigrats. Hillary's slip finally woke up the GOP. For the first time the GOP realized that they can win 2008 with a tough stance on immigration.

They should tell them that they will try to help all American workers who are here LEGALLY.

They should tell them that our immigration laws should be enforced and that we cannot allow our country to become overpopulated and our environment to become further degraded by overpopulation and that it is morally wrong to allow American employers to get away with hiring illegal workers who are then exploited with low wages and poor working conditions. We should enforce labor laws and increase minimum wages and not allow exploitation of illegal workers.

They should also tell them that our current policy allows the Mexican government to continue its corrupt system where a few Mexicans are very rich and the vast majority are very poor. We should support forcing reform in Mexico so the Mexican government will be forced to feed and take care of their own citizens instead of shipping desperately poor people to America to be exploited by American corporations. The American government should use its influence through economic assistance and trade to force Mexico to help its own citizens and to stop rewarding American corporations for their exploitation of desperately poor Mexican workers.

They should tell them that Mexico is a beautiful country with rich agriculture, a wonderful climate and many resources, including oil, and that we should support ending the corruption of the Mexican government that keeps Mexico from achieving its potential. They should tell them that we love Mexicans and their culture but that enforcing our immigration laws and forcing positive changes in Mexico will help Mexicans much more than permitting illegal workers to come to the U.S. only to be exploited by employers who want workers who will accept poor wages and miserable working conditions. America can do better than that.

I think that the republicans should tell the hispanic voters that they are American and should follow American ideals. They should help deport ALL people who come here illegally and support the upbringing of their legal people. We are being overran by people who want to turn this country into Mexico and who belittle Americans. I helped fight for a Cesar Chavez library but was told by Mecha that they couldn't and wouldn't fight for any cause other than hispanic causes. I went to Mexico and was told go back to the USA. I have many college hispanic friends that pride themselves by saying "f" the gov't and "f"" America. I tell them if your country is so good why don't you go there. There is usually no answer for that. I have many latino friends but the soft anger begins when they don't respect our values. I look around and the good jobs call for multiple languages and I wonder why other young kids whose parents may not even pay taxes are being taught english free but my kids are not being taught any 2nd language. They will be left out if nothing changes. These worthless gangmembers also are being allowed to kill our law enforcement and run back to Mexico. Where are all the strong politicians? If you find one that wants my vote, tell them to tell hispanic voters to help out or move. This year, because all democrats seem to have no backbone, I am voting REP. That is if one stands up. At least Pres. Bush would fight.

The GOP should say to Hispanic voters the same thing they should say to Egyptian-Americans, German-Americans, African-Americans, Muslim-Americans and whatever other "special interest " group. They should simply speak to AMERICANS who will be voting, and forget about kissing up to Hispanics or anyone else.

The debate should NOT be translated into Spanish unless it is translated into every language of every voter that MIGHT want to go vote.

The idea that a candidate should suck up to voters who approve of violating our laws is repugnant.

I will vote, regardless of party, race, sex, religion or philosophy, for the candidate who proposes the toughest solution to the problem of illegal immigration.

I can't stress how annoyed I am at the thought of illegal immigrants from Mexico sneaking into our country. They're taking the jobs that require hard labor, while many Americans can only rely on these types of jobs. Unemployment offices are full of men and women who would be more than happy to work the jobs taken by these illegal immigrants. And if in fact all the illegals went home, the Americans who take their jobs back would at least PAY TAXES!

I think we need to ask Hispanic / Latino citizens to show some patriotism and chose between moving their families FOR THAT MATTER their whole towns to America or being citizens themselves.

Yes it is a shame 1 person comes here then they want to bring their brothers and sisters and mom and dad then their cousins and their cousins bring their cousins and their aunts and uncles and grandma and grandpa and daughters and sons and WHERE DOES IT END?? Ever hear of 6 degrees of separation where one person in Croatia can connect themselves to a person in China in 6 steps......

    It has to stop
and no more instant citizenship if you are from Cuba
and if you come here illegally and have a kid
your kid does not become a citizen

CHOOSE to move to America legally
or stay in your homeland and live your life

and if you are here illegaly
stop demanding rights because Americans dont get those rights in your homelands.

Americans can't even own land in Mexico
But in America Japan owns all the skyscrapers in Los Angeles and Mexico owns all the homes.

    CHOOSE

If you are willing to give your vote to someone who takes whatever stand is the most politically expediant at the moment, well, by now you know where the Democrats are.

For the rest of you, look at the record of the people running for office and vote for who you think is being honest . . . . which leaves out the Democrats in the other room.

They should say "it's not your fault, it's ours, and we're sorry. We've allowed large businesses to take advantage of illegal immigrant workers causing an influx in the process. The influx has, in turn, caused increased racism due to factors that are present in any large immigration (ie Ellis Island). It's illegal for businesses to hire illegal immigrants, and we are going to fine or shut down any business that hires illegals. This may mean the price of some goods will go up, but so be it; at least we won't be supporting the inhumane treatment of a people who just want to improve their and their family's lives."

Mexican Americans (Spanish: mexicanoamericanos) are citizens of the United States of Mexican ancestry. Mexican Americans account for 9% of the country's population. About 26.8 million Americans have listed their ancestry as Mexican as of 2006.[2] Mexican Americans form the largest Hispanic group in the United States, with around half of all persons of Mexican or Mexican American origin in the U.S. checking white to register their race (in addition to stating their Mexican national origin). [3]

Mexican Americans trace their ancestry to Mexico, a country located in North America, bounded on the north by the United States; and many different European countries, especially Spain, which was its colonial ruler for over three centuries. Most Mexican American settlement concentrations are found in metropolitan and rural areas across the United States, with the highest concentrations in the Southwest, and the Midwest. Los Angeles, Albuquerque, Phoenix, San Diego, Houston, Santa Ana, Dallas, El Paso and San Antonio are particular areas for large Mexican American communities.

Other cities in the Upper Midwest with thriving Mexican American communities are Detroit, Kansas City, Missouri, St. Louis, Milwaukee and Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota. There are also isolated concentrations of Mexican Americans in mostly rural areas in the Northwest: Idaho, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming, the Plains: Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas, and the Southeast: Florida, Louisiana and North Carolina.

Growing populations (mostly consists of recently arrived immigrants from Mexico) are also present in other parts of the rural Southeastern United States, in states such as Georgia, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Alabama and Arkansas. A growing population is also present in urban areas such as Washington, D.C., New York City, Miami and Philadelphia.

Republicans should tell the TRUTH (what a novel idea!): "We embrace and appreciate the Latino voters. They are legal immigrants, and have gone to the considerable trouble of becoming citizens ACCORDING TO LAW. We do not want people here who came here illegally and yet expect all the benefits of citizenship without the responsibility of being law-abiding.There are many people who have been waiting for citizenship, going through legal channels for years. It is not fair to them to grant citizenship to Mexicans who have broken the immigration laws"

The Republican presidential candidates should say to Hispanic voters at Sunday’s debate that now is the time to show your allegiance by assimilating to our norm for those who feel that it is not important and have no desire to do so. They should tell them that yes we acknowledge that they are Hispanic, but now they are American and that is the bigger picture for the sanctity of our sovereign nation. They should tell them that our xenophobia of them as a community is because of their unwillingness to assimilate. Highlight others who have come and contributed before as they do now, and how their children have advanced because of assimilation. Then tell them that Mitt is hiring for 2009.

We are supposed to be a nation of laws. That is what made us great. But, if we continue to ignore certain laws because enforcing them would cut into profits of businesses who care only about making more money, and don't give a damn about our country, we will soon become a country like Mexico. Which is exactly what Corporate America wants (cheap labor to maximize profits). We shoud tell Hispanic voters (I'm talking about American citizens, not illegal aliens who are trying to be voters, in order to influence elections) that we want them to vote for the candidate of their choice. But, we should also point out to them that favoring amnesty for illegal aliens, just because most of them are Hispanic, is a short cut to finanical disaster. Very few people talk about the incredible cost to the American taxpayer that amnesty will create. The numbers are mind-boggling, but no Presidential candidate will bring up the subject. And this nonsense about illegal aliens having to pay a fine, learn English and temporarily leave the country to gain a path to citizenship is just that. If it were enacted, ways would be found to get around each of these requirements (hardship, etc.) and we would have gained nothing except a monster financial burden that our grandchildren would still be paying in their adult lives.

I think it's very important to differentiate between immigrants who are here legally and illegal ones. You can't lump all of them together. I don't think many Americans realize that illegal immigrants do get public assistance. They have food stamps, section 8 housing, free medical and don't pay any taxes. Also, while legal homeowners pay high taxes for schools, children of illegal immigrants send their kids to school for free. Plus, they even qualify for special financial aid for college. But perhaps, the biggest problem is that when an illegal is involved in a criminal act,he can just escape and there would be no way of tracing him. He would then simply come back under a different fake name. The illegal aliens are costing everyone so much more than just cheap labor,it's a question of how your taxes are being spent and even your safety. I think we should welcome those who come here legally, because they help America instead of just being a burden.

I find it RIDICULOUS that the GOP will have their debate translated into Spanish. What are all these Hispanics, who don't speak a word English, doing in THIS COUNTRY, the USA, after all????

Oh wait a minute, there is this Law that gives papers the next day to all Cubans who set foot here in the US.

And oh, wait a minute, our borders are SO open to rif raft, it's a free for all.

But which of these Presidential Candidates REALLY care? ALL they care about is to gain more voters to win the elections. AFTER the elections they don't care anymore whether we have another 9/11 or not.

I know this thread is about Hispanic voters but, ALL ILLEGAL ALIENS ARE NOT HISPANIC!!! They are Japanese, Chinese, Irish, Russian, African, British, Indian, the lists goes on.
So many come here legally ( school, already married to an american, work) but have to wait for 2 years to get a legal work visa and 3 or 4 to get a staying visa/citizenship. I have seen this first hand with Japanese friends. Who do you know that can survive for one month with NO food, shelter, work? Do any of you people have any idea how much a visa costs ( depending on what type and what country you are from) if you are sponsoring yourself and not being sponsored by an employer (like my employer sponsored visa to work in Japan as a musician ).

Out of all you people saying americans will do some of these farm/cheap factory labor/hands and knees lawn work with old school tools for $5- $20 a day, which of you would do it?!!! Talk is cheap go do it for a week!! I have when no one was hiring. It put enough gas in my car to get to that job for 3 days and eat ramen and healthy Mcdonalds $1.00 burgers for 1 meal a day.

I am totally for the current immigration laws. Just enforce them and U.S. Govt. stop putting your border patrol agents in prison for doing their jobs when you get caught slacking on yours..!!

Many jobs have been eliminated due to better faster technology, consumers wanting cheaper product ( even some crap that comes from the worst factories in China, Philippines, Central America, India) and employers not being able to afford the health care they are supposed to carry legally. ( yea!! GOP..., that killed my old job too).

Why don't some of you go 2 months with 3 pair of clothes, no electricity, no clean running water, transportation,t.v. lets see what you would do to survive and keep your family alive. Most of you would give up in the first week and possibly die. Everyone should get out to a " cheap " vacation more and see the world in it's realness.

Oh yea, many Hispanic/Latin American people came here Legally.!! Just in case you think they all are illegal.

The GOP should say the truth. We will do what little we can to satisfy your people 's needs while not doing too much to anger " the base " of America and fool them into thinking you are causing half or most of their problems.

Now go watch your big business mainstream controlled media and keep believing the hype.

The general hispanic population could care less about the importance of education,
they would rather work on cars, join gangs, sip on their coronas, and watch
Telemundo. Most of them don't care about what's happening to the fabric of this nation, but there are a few that deserve citizenship due to the fact that some have served this country and died.
To sum it up, the hispanic community needs to show that their stay in the U.S. will contribute to the U.S. mission instead of meandering and protesting just for the sake of protesting causing more money to be funnelled into the criminal justice system. They've already wasted billions of tax payer money just to keep them caged up in our penal system saving the criminal system in their native country money spent by a few corrupt millionaires.

They should tell them what they want to hear. That no "ILLEGAL" is going to have it easier than they did. A vast mojority of Hispanics that can vote, came into the country the legal way, went through the process and payed their fees. Do you really think they want anyone getting a free pass? Don't forget most of the Hispanic voters that can vote and actually vote are not even Mexican!

Hispanic voters have chosen to assimilate into our culture as lawful citizens striving for a new opportunity and a new life. With this opportunity, they must assume the responsibilities of a United States citizen, recognizing our united needs of national security, sovereignty, and respect for the rule of law. There can be only one pathway to citizenship and that is by following and abiding by the rule of law, for without the rule of law, chaos will be the end result. The Republican Party appreciates and respects the hispanic electorate, respects their contribution to making America great, but as with our immigrant forefathers of the past, their assimilation into this great country must be orderly and with an acceptance of a committment to their new country. That being said, the Republican Party welcomes legal hispanic immigrants into this country and encourages them to become a part of the Republican Party to work together for not only the common good of the hispanic community, but the greater good of all legal immigrants from all countries around the world.

We are the government for hispanics in exactly the same manner that we are the government for all the peoples of the United States. However as far as illegals of any nationality are concerned we are sworn to uphold the laws of the United States and we intend to do that. Seeing as how we have taken an oath to uphold the laws and duties of our offices anything less would be perjury, wouldn't it?

It is difficult to defend illegal immigrant Mexicans because they are illegal and their illegal status serves to support unfair prejudices widely held by citizens and illegal immigrants toward each other. This prejudice and mistrust is widely used by business lobby groups (and politicians who are in their pockets) to discourage any improvement of wages or conditions of working class people in the United States.

It is possible to eliminate many of the problems of illegal immigration and unethical hiring practices by enforcing present laws and requiring any business who presently employs or wishes to employ an illegal immigrant responsible for paying the cost of filing the immigrant’s immigration application forms and sponsoring the immigrant they have employed or intend to employ as an individual for up to 5 years (the cost could be repaid by the immigrant by deducting it from his or her pay over a period of time) and requiring all law enforcement agencies to arrest those immigrants who are here with no legal status. If they are found guilty they could perform community service as prescribed by a court of law to compensate for their violation and then returned to Mexico.

MY ADVISE TO THE GOP :
First of all keep the Honorable Ron Paul out of the debate.
Have Huckabee or one of the other so called Rebublicans promise to give back California, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico Nevada Utah and one half of Colorado.
They will get a lot of votes and If they dont want to solve the imigration problem; they can renig after the election; the telling of a few more lies cant do any harm; from what I am hearing their sins are washed in the blood of the lamb any way.

A little Canadian History that may be of interest to America, many years ago the English defeated the French and the powers to be made peace with the French, and Canada became a nartion. The English though that being there were far more English than French soon the French would be gone through assimilation.. In stepped the Catholic Church from France, Quebec and French speaking families started to have children, lots of children while the English did not. To-day Quebec has 1/3 the population and control via their voting power control over the goverment, to the point no politician can become Prime Minister or a Minister without speaking both languages, couple this with all top goverment positions thereby winning in the end, without having fired a shot.........Hello United States of Mexico goodby the United States of American. Both parties know the hispanic votes are gold!

20 Million illegal immigrants and counting, how in blue blazes do you round up 20 million people with family (Blood thicker than Water) on their side with the power of a vote via a bank of millions?

Tell the Hispanic audience that this debate on Spanish television is what is causing division in America right now. What about the Hindi, the Chinese, The Russians, Japanese, Thai, Phillipino, French, Portuguese Americans? Are we going to have debates in other languages and other platforms also? These debates are biased and prejudiced against every other group of people who have come to this country and learned the language and assimilated themselves. This is why Americans will make sure after this Election that English will become our national language, this is an embarassment to our children and our history.

Republican candidates at the Hispanic debate should tell all illegal immigrants that they must return to their home countries. As in the past, people may then apply to enter the United States as citizens or legal workers. With a legal status, no one could be exploited by employers in this country or by the drug dealers, human trafficers, phony document peddlers, etc.

Churches and not-for-profit advocate groups should have their tax-free status taken away if they encourage and assist people to illegally enter this country.

Why are politicians not speaking out againt these groups.

All foreign countries should be caring for their own citizens, not encouraging them to come to the United States. We have enough of our own problems.

Some of "these hispanics who are in the USA" are Puerto Ricans (US citizens) with a long, proud history, which includes being handed over as war booty without their consent. "We" went looking for them, they didn't ask to be part of the U.S. It seems the least we could do is accept this fact and support thier culture and enhance thier learning of english as well.

How many more illegal immigrants can this country absorb? Oh, I forgot, we don't have to absorb them. Just pay their way. They won't learn our language. They want to hold onto their language and culture for dear life, be paid more than they ever made in their lives in their homeland, expect us to educate their kids and pick up their healthcare costs, while they think they have every right to become Americans and change the fabric of this nation to suit their needs.

I' am one fed up American who cannot figure out which of the candidates, Republican or Democrat, will best serve the American middle class. Sign me, "sick of it all."

For one of our presidential debates to be held in a foreign language is disgusting. Those who cannot understand English do not need to have the right to vote and change our society. Those who think Americans who oppose illegal aliens are xenophobic racists, should also have a moniker. How about "Corporate Kissers" or "21st Century slave-traders"? Bringing people into this country to serve as poorly paid servants is inhumane.

I wholeheartedly agree with "Donna" (Dec 7th). In addition to that I would add that our forefathers fought bloody wars under formidable conditions, sacrificed dearly, but carried the fight to the birth of a new nation. Mexicans should do the same. Be willing to do what it takes to make their own beautiful county with all the potential into a world class example! Make it so good that all the Mexicans who fled here for the American Dream will happily go back across that border and live the Mexican dream! Then both of our countries can live peacefully and equally with each other. This is not racist, look at it like tough love!

Had the honor of listening to the Marshalltown, Iowa piece last night. Give me a break. The elected officials allowed illegals to come in and displace US citizen workers. More were allowed in and US citizens were displaced from their homes because of housing pressures. The flood continued until US citizens were displaced from their communities and the schools that their tax dollars paid for. The mayor then whines that he can't get enough cheap, foreign labor to satisfy the greed of the local business owners. This guy need to be in prison for breaking federal law. One day would suffice.... just long enough to get a good de-lousing and a long shower to wash off the slime.

Before we will ever get honesty, we need to require intelligence....... It would be nice to see if one of them could get a clue... I want to see if they can get beyond the fence proposal (which is already law) as a solution for illegal immigration. Port and border security provides a solution regarding the protection of US citizens. Illegal immigration laws provide a solution to US issues to numerous to list.
