How well do you feel you know Mitt Romney?

By CNN's Jack Cafferty:

It's been a long journey for Mitt Romney.

After six years of running, on Thursday night he will have what is probably his best chance to convince the American people that he should be their next president.

Although voters believe that Romney is best-equipped to deal with our ailing economy, the nation's top issue, it's been an uphill battle for him when it comes to connecting with these voters.

Over the past few days, other speakers - most effectively his wife, Ann - have made the case that Romney is much more than a rich and seemingly emotionless business executive with good hair.

But a lot of Americans still aren't convinced. They don't believe this guy with $200 million in the bank, offshore accounts and private tax returns understands what it's like to struggle.

With that in mind, Politico has some advice on how Romney can make the best use of his convention speech.

For starters, Romney should "go bold," which means not only pitching his own plans for fixing our problems but revealing some personal details he hasn't before.

That means things like his Mormon faith, his near-death experience in France or even what it was like to shut down a plant at Bain Capital.

Another suggestion is to "go light on the red meat." That's what Paul Ryan is for, as he so eloquently showed the nation Wednesday night.

Lastly, Romney could talk about his relationship with his father, George Romney. By giving some details - and showing some emotion - about what he learned from his father, Romney could show us a glimpse of the humanity that many have yet to see but that those close to him insist is there.

Here’s my question to you: How well do you feel you know Mitt Romney?

Interested to know which ones made it on air?

Connecticut voter:
How well did we know Obama at this point in 2008? Romney wasn't dropped on top of this mountain of success. Anyone who knows him knows he worked longer hours, studied harder, and wasted less time than anyone else. It's incredibly hard to do what he's done. The fact this guy got there says volumes about how smart he is and how he would work as President.

Barb:
His wife says he is a funny and honest man. I see a boring tax evader who would raise my taxes while giving himself and his rich friends more tax cuts.

Lou:
I don't give two hoots about his personal, religious, or family life. Strapped his dog on the car...big deal. Was a jerk in college...who wasn't? But I do want to know what he was like as a businessman, because that is the experience he is selling to us. So far, I'm not impressed with his ethics.

Jim:
Not as well as I know Barack Obama. And I’m not interested in going down that road again. I'll take a chance on what I know about Romney.

Milton in Netherlands:
Not at all. He is a man who plays by his own set of rules. His refusal to release his tax returns makes it difficult even for many people in his party to know him.

JD in New Hampshire:
The only thing I don't know about Mitt Romney is how he sleeps at night.

Bob in Ohio:
One can never know enough about any politician to trust them.

Considering how long he's been running for President, you'd thing we'd all know him pretty darned well.
It sure doesn't seem that way. Then again, after Nov. 6th, maybe we won't have to deal with knowing him
    any better anyway.

I know Romney and his ilk all too well and know they would do anything to gain control and power. This man is wealthy beyond anyone's wildest belief and has spent the last dozen years running for President by wearing out his opponents with his wealth. America will regret the day it elects him as we will face the worse depression ever if he is elected.

Jack: I do not get a warm and fuzzy feeling about Mitt Romney. I have two friends who lost their jobs, because of Bain Capitol. It took several years for them to get back on their feet. It cost one them his marriage. Why does Mitt Romney have have a Swiss Bank Account? Why is he investing in Europe and not America? What is he hiding in his Offshore accounts in the Grand Cayman Islands? Why doesn't he show at least 3 or 4 years of tax returns? Why did he chose Rep. Paul Ryan, who is a lighting rod when it comes to medicare. Rep. Paul Ryan is a rat who loves cheese. Remember, rats spread disease.

I don’t care to know him as he is in the party of phony faith, and hate. A CNN camera lady knows that all too much. How many more at that convention carry a bible in one hand, and a bag of peanuts in the other.

all too well and it makes me frightented to think of all those who don't care about secrets he's still hiding – the request for mediation rather than court for the ponzi scheme with his son, his financial advice to Marriott to fabricate a loss that the IRS was probably to burdened to catch in the son of boss scandal, Stericycle hypocrisy, when he stopped being paid as Bain CEO, why not releasing his taxes is less damaging than if we see them – is this really the best the GOP has to offer???

We know a lot more about Mitt Romney than we did about Barack Obama four years ago. Mitt Romney has a public record of accomplishments versus a community organizer and legislator who never wrote or sponsored a bill.

Compared to the current impostor in the Whitehouse I feel I know Mitt Romney like a Siamese Twin !!
How can you even ask this question when we have this guy Obama who's as mysterious as a spy novel character ? If ever there was a prominent political figure where it's impossible to connect the dots with his background it's Obama.
And the media sits by and asks him nothing about his history, his life background. Zero.
And here we have Mitt Romney who bares his soul to the world for the past 5 years and you ask this question ??
    Unbelievable Jack.

Well enough to vote for him. I've worked with enough senior leaders over the years to know he is a solutions guy – the real deal. He may not be cuddly or an oratorial star - but he knows how to organize stuff, make the right deals, and get things accomplished. Ryan, as a co-pilot was absolutely no surprise for this kind of leader. BTW, the correlary to this is that i think i now know Obama well enough to not vote for him again - the obverse of everything above.

The only thing I don't know about Mitt Romney is how he sleeps at night. He has earned his fortune off the lost jobs, looted pensions and loss of health care benefits of average working people. Now he's running for the highest office in the land and his candidacy is based on lies. "Fact checkers" might not matter to Romney, but they matter to me.

Doesn't someone have to say something before you have an iota of knowing the person? I'm curious why republican thing he's the golden boy where 4 years ago no one wanted him around, he couldn't buy a delegate. Do the republicans think they owe him something after he spend about $40 million of his own money 4 years ago? He should tell us about ROMNEYCARE.

It is painfully obvious that he never learned much from his father and that in itself is a shame. I really hope he does not become President.

Well lets see... He's a Mormon Republican. He's a terrible businessman who managed to get rich by stealing. Hmm... What else? The guy has $250M in job creating wealth and has only managed to hire illegals to cut his lawn. Oh yea I forgot, he doesn't pay taxes at the rate I pay, and I'm poor as crap. He wants to lower his taxes, and not mine, all without balancing the budget. His "plan" is pure rhetoric. He's indifferent about national ads that misquote the President. Last but not least, the man is a coward. If you don't have the grit to say ONE THING without total ambiguity, leave.

So I want this guy as the President of my country why?

Two things stick out in my mind about what Romney has said his intentions are, if he wins the election. One is that, he wants to give even more money to the Military. That would be like giving Queen Elizabeth more money for her hat allowance. The other is he thinks it would be a great idea to eliminate the Mortgage Interest Deduction. I can guarantee you, that if you have recently had tuition payments to cover for your kids, and a Mortgage, you are close to broke, and such a move would send many families like ours, scurrying to downsize in a hurry. Home values would plummet. Property taxes that are already being raised as fast as the crooks can raise them, would take an even bigger chunk out of the homeowners wallet, and the Homeowners Net Worth would decrease even further. Mitt romney is a bored, very wealthy man, looking for the kind of validation that would give him a thrill. You see a lot of these guys on the World Poker tour. Trying to look cool is the only thing left in life they have to hang their hat on. Oh gosh, speaking of hats, did you see the Texas Delegation? They all have matching hats and Roy Rogers and Dale evans outfits. They look like the Taliban Cowboys of the Wild West. They got a new outfit for each day too. How did we get into this mess? The only thing that i know about Mitt Romney is what I have been able to read in the press. That is, he is a venture capitalist who worked for Bain Capital, he is extremely wealthy, he pays an effective income tax rate of 13%, he is a member of the One Percenters and the Democrats do not like him.

Until a reporter gets the gumption to find out more about him and writes a story is when I'll read more about him in the press. Hopefully, it will be an article absent the Democrats talking points such as he paid no taxes for the last ten years and such mindless drivel.

As a person I don't know the man at all. We have different religious beliefs and up until 1978 Romney's church would not allow black men to be ordained as priests and were prohibited in attending the temple ordinances. Basically they though blacks were not worthy. Although the church had an open membership for all races, blacks were not considered equals.
We also have different political beliefs. Romney believes in the trickle down economics that has failed the republicans for years yet he wants to continue that failing philosophy. We would be no better off then we were 4 years ago.

Jack. Why is the issue of creating new jobs such a difficult issue to correct? There have been millions of new jobs created in the past few years. The problem is that they have been created in China and India. These jobs have been relocated by the CEO's of American corporations at the expense of the American worker. I assume that when the average American can no longer afford these offshore products, then the companies will switch their marketing and sales priority to the emerging marketplace. I am so tired of hearing the politicians complain that the 1%ers will not invest without tax breaks. They are investing heavily, just not on us.

I think I know Mitt Romney well enough that I WILL NOT vote for him. Bain Capital appears to be a Corporate Raider Organization that targets businesses, and after Bain takes the business over they "Rape" the business for everything they can. Bain will sell off any profitable areas of a business, then Bain will look for areas to make profitable, such as cutting employee pay and benefits and/or outsourcing to a foreign country. Finally Bain will shut down any part of the business that is not profitable and hand all of the remaining employees a "Pink Slip." Bain is a "Hatchet" organization.

If Romney runs this country the same way he runs Bain, he will look for profitable areas of the budget that the wealthy can clean house on from Wall Street profits, and then sell everyone else down the tubes. [1] Romney may increase defense spending for publicly held defense contractors and lay off our troops that use the equipment. [1] Romney may award contracts to to purchase government vehicles such as police cars, fire trucks, highway equipment, etc, from publicly held companies, and then lay off the personal that use the vehicles, and then sell the equipment through a sales agency for another profit.

Romney definitely knows how to make money, and I applaud him for being successful, but Romney is only concerned about one person, and that is Romney.

With all we hear about Mitt from the liberal side we should be moving to Canada. Comedians make fun of him and his wife Ann. David Letterman slams her for the use of a horse as therapy. A Yahoo reporter makes a joke about the Repubs. partying while Blacks are drowning from Isaac, with his friends and they are laughing in the background. I know they couldn't bring themselves to find out that Prez. Obama was doing drugs while in college. I trust Mitt better than any Dem. no whatever they throw all him. As a life long Dem. I refuse to vote for someone who Divides this country by race, gender, and wealth.

He's been in government for decades longer than Soetoro so if people don't know him by now, do the same as you did with your messiah (i.e., elect him before you find out who he is, outside the fog of Nancy Pelosi's brain).

He doesn't come across to me as real. It is as if he is acting out a role. But that isn't the problem. It's not a question of how well I know or understand him. The question is how well does he understand me and people like me. I don't think he does. I doubt that he can relate to anyone who has had to work and struggle to get through life. I believe that his world is too narrow, encompassing only what has to do with wealth and power.

The Republican national campaign strategy appears to be built on the premises of “You can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time.” This would appear, however, to be a short-term, losing strategy.
For example, saying that Obamacare will “destroy” Medicare, while it might be a catchy phrase, has no factual merit. It will not stand the test of time. In fact, Obamacare is all about the PRESERVATION of Medicare. Another fib being told is that President Obama made our economic crisis worse and/or that we are not better than we were four years ago. Go back to early 2009 and remember how bad things were then. Our economy is greatly improved since he took office.
President Obama will be re-elected in November: You can’t fool all of the people all of the time.

Well enough. The fact is that we have a choice between two people - one who has as his stated goal the maintenance of America as a world power, economically as well as every other way, and one who believes that Americans are arrogant and that the United States should accept a lesser role in the world and Americans a lesser standard of living in their lives. For me the choice is simple: continue down a path to American irrelevancy or try to change that path.

I know this is unfashionable, but there is a tape on YouTube of a speech from when Obama was elected as Senator and he states how he was born in Kenya and knew what it was to be an immigrant. I believe we all know Mitt Romney a lot more than we knew Barack Hussein Obama before he became President. Romney is the quintessential American who worked hard and became very successful. As a parent, I wished that for my children and my grandchildren, to become independent and generous with charitable donations to the needy. Obama divides people, and pits them against each other. Divide and conquer. Some Americans have fallen into his rhetorical trap and would rather take from others than work to earn what they deserve. I truly believe the Romney/Ryan team will be the right choice for America and they will stop the slide that America is on towards disastrous debt and depression.

The Audacity of Hope tells us of Obama's heart and how he understands people and what they want out of life and how they view our country .Obama sees this country in human terms, not just as an economic entity. Does Romney know who we are?

Well Jack, From what I've been able to deduce from many reliable sources and information, Mitt Romney is basically a man that mascarades as a gentleman, but is actually a real snake in the grass. I would expect only bad things from a Romney Presidency, much like I did under the George Bush 2 Presidency. The same Neo Cons would be running yet another privy fortunate son President without the integrity or honesty one could hope for in a President. In short I know enough about Mitt Romney to not vote for him and advise my fellow American Citizens to vote against him and all other Republicans at this time. We need to show these Republican to the door after the four long years of obstructionism and for the eight grueling years of the Bush Presidency. Obama needs to take action to insure the voting machines aren't rigged again by the Republicans. Lets have an ocean of blue voters swarm the voting this november and get rid of each and every obstructionist.

I know that Mitt Romney has a very exclusive estate in my hometown Belmont Massachusetts. He owns has a large family compound near where my sister lives in New Hampshire. The Mitt Romney I know has been on both sides of every important issue I can think of and if elected will most likely serve the political interests of his campaign's highest bidders.

Who? Romney never speaks of his time as a Republican governor of the most liberal state, where he passed universal health care. He doesn't talk about Bain Capital, the company he founded, and his time there, that may have ended in 1999 or 2002, which he should really know. He never talks about his Mormon faith, a type of Christianity that most evangelical Christians look at with more than skeptical eyes. He's released just one year of tax returns and a "summery" of a second year, even though it was his own father George who set the precedent for presidential candidates in releasing personal financial data: weird. Jack, who is this man? I've known corporations with better defined personalities than this guy.

I know him and his kind well enough, thank you. It's almost incomprehensible that after the near total destruction that the financial sector willfully brought upon this nation, Willard M. Romney, poster boy for vulture capitalism, would have the gall to ask people to vote him into office. That's an equivalent to hiring a convicted arsonist for fire chief. This guy would sell his soul for a profit, and I believe he would not be beyond using the Presidency to continue doing the only thing he knows how to do, destructive profiteering.

Our politicians have a habit of lying to get elected. i imagine we can find a newspaper that says George Bush never said "read my lips no new taxes" just like Obama promised the GM workers the plant would stay open. We were told we needed an American auto industry which is why Obama's administration sold Chrysler to Italian Fiat for $2 billion less than we tax payers paid to bail the company out.

Creating a struggle is not the answer to solving the struggles.A clear concise perspective alleviates all the hate and regurgitated hiphocrisy coming out of a social engineering democratic party agenda..We are worse off with obama policies that revisit history books that see white people blamed for things in past even if they had nothing to do with it.Only concern is the "all above policy for wall st making money destroying oceans and water suply in name of cheap gas that doesnt exist exclusively cuz u.s. govt refuses (obama included), in getting rid of futures market where wall st buys low and sells high in same day..The fact democrats allow llocals to be saddled with debt caused by flags of convenience and dutch rule of law cruisline speaks volumes to inherent corruption that deserves to be overthrown by any means necessary

It does not matter to me what Romney says tonight during his speech, I do not believe that he can connect to the middle class. He does not know how it is to struggle when he has offshore accounts, cannot reveal his taxes, started on a bad foot with England and have made some ignorant comments. He not his wife and family cannot relate to the voters, because he is another George Bush who cannot relate to people, only when it comes to making money. He is not about faith, because in any faith, the truth is revealed by one's actions. The fact he cannot reveal his taxes, yes, he is hiding something. So if anyone wants to hear from Romney is those who he is willing to help the most, the rich and wealthy.

Well, the fact is that America knows more about Gov. Romney that they ever knew and still know about President Obama. Mitt Romney has a successful record in both government and the private sector. Unfortunately for America, President Obama has no success at anything. He has presided over the longest economic recovery (or lack of) in the history of the country, the highest unemployment rate in decades, the lack of any long term fixes for the housing market, the lack of long term solutions for big entitlement programs, the lack of any fiscal discipline, and astronomical debt that has even led to the down-grading of America's bond rating. His "solutions" have consisted of blaming President Bush, the Euro crisis, the Japanese Tsunami, big pharma, big oil, big bad wall street, big bad republicans and big corporations. He really has no plan or budget for anything, just more spending and more funneling of tax-payer money to his cronies.

I am not a Republican and unlikely to vote for Mitt Romney under any circumstances, given the policies he seems to support. The problem is his continual flip-flopping - and outright lying. How can anyone know what he is FOR or AGAINST? One has to assume that those he surrounds himself with represent what he believes - and if that's so, he's a scary proposition. It's shocking that in six years of running for President that Romney has failed to show who he really is - or maybe the empty suit we see is all there is.

Mr. Romney has few topics about which he can now speak. One by one, the substantive topics for debate are disappearing, deemed too problematic for the Romney campaign to address. Business acumen, experience as governor, US Olympics, Romney budget, women's issues, immigration reform, all toxic. Mr. Romney is reduced to dragging out the birther baggage to pad his stump speeches and give his base a few crumbs. And to call attention away from his flip-flopping on all important issues.

But what is the single issue on which Mr. Romney has never flip-flopped? He stands doggedly firm on never, under any circumstances, releasing his tax returns.

    Why?

It is not just liberals who want to see Romney's tax returns.
It is 63% of American voters who do.

The longer Mr. Romney delays, the more suspicious it appears.

Obama released 8 years of tax returns
    GW Bush 10 years
    Clinton 12 years
    GHW Bush 14 years
    George Romney 12 years.

    What is there to hide?
Release the tax returns, Mr. Romney.

We know him well. He was a MA resident who just happened to file taxes stating Utah was his primary residence - then fixed it, retroactively of course. He worked for Bain up until 2002 or was that 2009 per his taxes? He's the guy who created Obamacare. He's the guy that led MA to 47th in job creation, dropping it 10 spots from 37th. He's staunchly pro-abortion, and pledged to always be more gay-friendly than the late Ted Kennedy. He's all about gun control and states' rights for working out their welfare work requirements. That's the Mitt I knew. Oh wait, he's "severely conservative" now and running for office for Pete's sake? Guess I don't know that much about him (or his taxes) after all. Which Mitt will he try to be tonight? Wonder if cheesey grits are on the menu.

No matter what his wife , Paul Ryan or his friends say about him Mitt Romney doesn't connect with me. He is super wealthy and that isn't the issue, I think Warren Buffet is great it's his fumbles, "what did you get at the hardware store" – "hardware stuff"- that sounds stupid, how about a hammer or nails – a real answer. He just doesn't seem to be telling the truth, my impression. So when he says he has struggled I wait for his nose to grow. He and his wife have excellant health care for all her "struggles" with health issues- it isn't the same as someone who has to decide, do I pay my mortgage or go to the doctor and pay that bill or can I even get access to a Dr to deal with medical issues- it's not the same, playing fields are so different.

I know he knows how to raise a good family, he knows how to balance a budget, he knows the real u.s. government debt is 70T when you count ss/medicare/medicaid, and he has a can do attitude. Obama is a whiner, a blamer, a panderer, and does not have the first clue on how to handle a serious fiscal problem like the one we have right now. The liberal media has done everything it can to coverup obama's fiscal failures. 23 million unemployed, and a 50% unemployment rate for new college grads says it all. Do I know Mitt Romney? Unfortunately, yes. He used to be a liberal Republican governor of Massachusetts but now is an arch concervative whose wife spends millions on dressage horses that shefrequently flies across the country so she can ride them, he's building an elevator for his cars in his $12 million beach front La Jolla California vacation home, he will only show us his tax returns for the minimum two years (have we seen the 2011 yet?), he has untold millions in off shore bank accounts and he was a bishop in the LDS Church that has some unique, shall we say, beliefs and practices; he put his dog in a cage on the roof of his car for an extended road trip and he has a nervous little laugh when he's caught in a lie. There is one thing that is perfectly clear and undeniable, no matter what your political affiliations may be: Mitt Romney has either 1. absolutely no understanding of what life is like for the 99% who are not rich enough to avoid paying taxes, or 2. he knows perfectly well what it is like for us but just couldn't give a dim dam.

There have been many opportunities to know Mitt Roimney. His book, personal interviews and of course his wife. He is measured in his words as he has learned how easily words can be taken out of context and used against him so easily by his opponents and the media. Being of the same faith I am aware of his service and how it molds you in ways that little else can. For once we have a candidate for which his record speaks louder than his words. President Obama had to rely on great rhetoric as he had no real public record of accomplishments and whose backgroud was so unknown. So the answer is yes, I do know Mitt Romney and certainly enough to know that he can be trusted to bring honor and trust to the office of President.

One more thing, if you remember, Herbert Hoover, our last president who had a business background and was thought to be brilliant, and he was, in his area of expertise. Hoover tried the austerity method and failed. There is a reason why Governments are not run the same way businesses are run.

Let's see. Romney's great grandpa was a Mormon polygymist who fled the USA to establish a compound in Mexico so he could keep all his wives. Romney's dad was a very well respected businessman & Governor who released 10 years of income tax records when he ran for the Presidential nomination, so no-one could think he was doctoring the returns.

As for Willard, the son? Willard "Mitt" Romney:

    1. Is ardently pro-choice;

    2. Is ardently pro-life (depends on his audience);

    3. Lived off his stock investments while he was a college student (just like the rest of us);

    4. Inherited some of his fortune (just like you & me);

    5. Made the rest at Bain by following the leveraged buyout business model (you know, the one where an equity capital firm 'buys' a business by putting forward 5% in cash and borrowing the rest from a too big to fail bank, thereby saddling a business 'target' with huge debt & charging additional millions of $ in advice and management fees and raiding the pension funds & laying off workers until the business either squeaks by, or goes bankrupt);

    6. Was Governor of MA, utilizing his business experience to cut taxes for the wealthiest families and to hike taxes on everyone else by raising 'fees' ;

    7. While Gov of MA, lost jobs, lost businesses and left MA as 47th in job creation and deeply in debt;

    8. Claims to have rescued the 2002 Winter Olympics, but the U.S. taxpayer bailed it out with @ 1.3 billion $ infusion;

    9. Is a brilliant verbal contortionist, having held every position on any matter of public opinion (sometimes in the same sentence!); but

    10. Has one firm & unshakable conviction - having released 1 and 1/2 years of incomplete tax returns, he will adamantly not release any more!!!

I think I know enough about this 'vulture' capitalist to never let him within reach of the Oval Office. That goes for his 'boy wonder', too.

No one contributing here knows either candidate – all we know is what they want us to know. Instead, look at their actions and as far as Obama goes I think Shakespeare summed it up best:
    'a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
    Signifying nothing.'
For Romney Shakespeare's advice is equally apt:
'In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
    As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
    Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,'

The dog on top of the car issue was enough for me, Jack. He cares nothing about the well-being of creatures that he deems below him, and I'm pretty sure that includes the majority of the American population. I'm not wasting my time listening to his drabble about how he cares about me (he makes more per day than I make in a year) – I'm just waiting for the polls to open so I can be the first in line to vote for Obama.

And yet another actor on a political stage trying to be what he is not.

Dysfunction is the norm for political beings, and our belief that it is anything different is our dysfunction.

Authenticity is what is real, what is human, it is where pure compassion, love, empathy derive from, and as long as a politician spews hate, absolute ideology, dogma, he or she can never be authentic.

I worry that if Romney gets elected, he will be an "empty vessel", waiting to be filled up by whichever Republican groups are then in ascendancy (the Neocons, for example), becoming little more than a mouthpiece for those policy setters. His flip-flopping or lack of clarity on so many issues indicates he is merely parroting the loudest voice currently in his ear; no one with such an insufficiently developed sense of who he is and what he should stand for deserves to be president. Speakers at the RNC seem to be telegraphing this as well, with their consistent emphasis on Romney's "niceness" and family values.

No, and I don't want to. I do not consider wealthy people who hide money offshore to avoid paying taxes loyal American citizens. I do not consider people who mix-up their religious activities with their civic obligations loyal American citizens. I dislike people, born to wealth, without substantive educations, who start out high in the hierachy due to family connections and wealth, and then have the gall to trumpet their business skills and success. Nothing interesting to know about this kind of trash. A true conservative will tell you that the government really can't create and provide jobs, long term, but when the neo-conservatives are seeking power, they promise jobs, and the oceans of uneducated, stupid repulblican voters lap it up. Disgusting.

As an objective outsider it seems remarkable to me that the presidential race is as close as it is currently. Surely the American people cannot want a return to the devastating economic policies Bush republicans dealt you all. History begs us all not to repeat the same mistakes. America cannot afford this mistake. It may never ever recover. To blame Obama for not fixing those mistakes fast enough is one thing ... to threaten to return to those mistakes hardly seems sensible at all.

I know this about Mitt Romney. During his time serving in leadership capacities in his church, he donated thousands of hours of time with no financial remuneration at all. During that time, he worked mostly with people who were not wealthy and primarily with people experience all kinds of difficulty in their lives. He did the job of a pastor or priest, but he did it on his own time, after he got home from work or on the weekends. His service in these capacities spanned at least five years and when he was done, he went back to doing other kinds of church service such as teaching classes to children, helping with scouting or many of the other less important sounding jobs that all members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints voluntarily serve in.

Mitt Romney is probably the greatest thing that could happen to this country at this moment.

We are in the one spot in the last several hundred years where we could either go into 20 trillion in debt by 2016 and be a totally dependent people on welfare systems, we can be the slack nation that doesn't really give our kids incentive to really strive hard at math and science in school (since we are going to have our free food and free lines at the doctor handed to us)

    OR

We could unleash the innovation of the masses and let the tide of our collective work once again make us into the nation of producers, inventors, manufacturers and workers. Each and every man woman and child can feel he or she is a MAKER not a TAKER in this world.

What better joy is there than that?

I know this is what Mitt Romney will bring this nation.

Just for social issues alone, I would never vote for him. He and his wife (why did she get such great reviews on her speech, when she TYPIFIES the 50's subservient blonde wife with an apron???) have never known want, have never existed in fear of job loss, have been incredibly blessed and yet refuse to share with the voters where their money came from, and where it is now. His religion, his neandrethal refusal to accept women's rights and the rights of GLBT citizens, his stance on immigration, and his exceptional and delusional concept of international politics... I'm downright frightened that he might get in.

Jack, you have stated more in your article than I knew about Romney before I read it. What you have stated does not make me feel any better. None of the facts you stated tell me about the man's character or what decisions he has made in the past or how he makes them, all of which I feel are critical to deciding on a president. None of this, so far as I have seen, has come out to the majority of the public via the major media networks. Is this a fault of his campaign staff, or is it a fault of the media being interested only in superficialities and sound bites or is it the fault of a campaign staff who communicates to the public in superficialities and sound bites? I know more of Obama than Romney and feel much better with him than Romney. Of course, maybe Romney is just the devil I don't know.

I know Mitt believes there is no reason for a woman to ever have an abortion even in the case of rape, incest, or if the mother's life is in danger. I know Mitt believes that everyone should have access to healthcare even if it is subsidized by the government. I know Mitt believes that everyone should have acces to healthcare as long as the government isn't subsidizing it. I know that Mitt wants everyone to succeed and to ensure that happens he's willing to level the playing field so millionares won't be left behind. I know that Mitt believes the government spends far too much money on silly things like teachers, police officers, and infrastructure. I kno that Mitt wouldn't worry about getting our military invloved in Syria or Iran. I know that Mitt doesn't care much for breathing pollution free air or drinking clean water. I know Mitt thinks most Americans can pay for college by asking their parents for a personal loan. I know Mitt believes that marriage is a gift from God to shared between two loving people for time and all eternity, provided those two loving people are not of the same sex. I know Mitt respects and admires his father, but won't follow in his footsteps.

Jack- Looking at Romney's report, he seems like a guy who has no backbone and who would say anything to get elected. That's why even his own party is having hard time with his nomination. Romney was for abortion now he is against it. Romney created the first version of Universal Healthcare system but now he is against Obamacare which is based on his law. He is for war with Iran but guess what none of his 5 sons served in the army. Romney pays 14% taxes much less than my 35% and he does not even want to disclose more than a year of his tax return. My bank mandates 2-3 years of tax return for God's sake🙂. So How do you trust a guy who would tell you what you want to hear but not what you need to hear untill he gets his way. He reminds me of a clean cut car dealer.

What ever happened to our society that we consider it a negative that a person is wealthy? People for the most part have no understanding what a company like Bain Capital does. If we credit him for cutting off money and shutting down underperforming companies ending some jobs, do we also give him credit for all the companies he kept going or help start with the same money? Staples for instance was a one store company before Bain took control. Staples now has 90K employees. Does Obama credit him with those? Obama needs to hide his failures, particularly related to his abysmal employment failures, so he attacks Romney where he thinks it will cut deepest. It does not matter if it is true, just if it sticks.

I want someone who is this smart and this successful to be running our country. What fools do not want this? I read the silliness of these posts about "party of hatred", Mitt doesnt hate anyone, I am part of that party and certainly dont hate anyone and he doesnt know peoples problems. What foolishness. he plays by the rules, doesnt cheat on his wife, lie to congress, etc. I want successful people to give back to others, not in thier money, but in thier service and knowledge. That is what Mitt is doing, how can any decent person be mad about this....maybe jealous, but that is silly too. Obama had 4 years and he has horrible unemployment, his energy plan has led to $4 gas and the worst economy of our lives. Higher spending then ever and a horrible debt. After four years you dont get to keep blaming Bush. Thanks for getting Bin Laden, but you had your chance to be a complete President and it didnt work out. I dont hate him at all, he is my president. Other than that, I question his reasoning for trying so hard and so often to become president. I know that I would not be where I am today if he were president when I was 18. I simply could not afford to go to the college and the Ivy League law school I got into. I did not want to "shop around" for a cheaper alternative. I was smart and worked hard and earned admittance to prestigious institutions. Mitt would tell me that I should have shopped around or borrowed six figures from my parents (who had nowhere near that kind of money). I worked my way through school and had several federal student loans - of which I paid back every cent. Mitt thinks an Ivy League education is reserved only for those who were lucky enough to be born to wealthy parents. What kind of plan for the future is that?? –Where your most talented students are told to look elsewhere or wait to get a college education because the country is not ready to invest them?

How well do I know Romney?

I've made a real effort to learn as much as I can about the guy since the start of the primaries, watching debates, listening to speeches and even looking at a bit of family history. For a while he seemed like a pretty decent guy, with the normal amount of baggage any candidate brings into an election. But then I started doing some fact checking about much of what he was saying about his opponent. Bottom line, he seems to have a penchant for lies, in his live comments and in campaign adds. I cant find any reason to vote for anyone who attempts to gain office through the use of falsehoods, and misleading statements. And it seems his running mate has a talent for the same. Paul Ryans speech to the convention included nine accusations against Obama....an independent fact check found six were lies and three were misleading. I know all I need to know about Romney and his running mate. They are not deserving of leading this country.

I know Romney well enough to know he has business experience. Right now, I don't care about how "likeable" someone is. Look horrible, be a poor speaker, I don't care – what I care about is putting someone in place who'll help me get back to work, so I can pay my own way without needing governmental help. I don't want anymore empty promises about how the government will take care of me – I take care of me and mine best, but that only happens when I can work

Mitt is too secretive. I don't feel like I know him at all...he seems to think he is special and doesn't have to prove anything to be president. He is rich and paid his taxes...that is all he says. That and his changing his stance on issues frequently..Nope don't know him.

I want to hear him agree at least on one thing with the democrats and show that he will not be only for one side, but that he will compromise to give a chance for both sides of politics to try things out.

That is what I want to hear from both Romney and Obama!!! They need to forget about their political parties and try to compromise some things to help us, the people.

I dont need to see 10 years of tax returns, or find out how much he has in a swiss bank account (to be honest, I would have found it suspicious if a man worth $250 million did not have foreign investments). I had always assumed he was a good husband and father. I wish I could say that those things will matter to my vote – but they won't. I need to know him well enough only to get one answer from him. I know I dont want four more years of Obama. I need him to answer why I want 4 years of him (and Mr. Ryan – who loves his mother). Answer that, and I can live without knowing his dog's name or what street he grew up on or that he loves his mother too. Was that too cynical?

Barack Obama and his attack dogs have tried to denigrate Mitt Romney with little success according to the polls, and almost no challange or rebuke by the mainstream media. Almost anything from the Romney camp is challanged and distorted by the same media, although they profess objectivity and fairness. Wake up Jack, wake up America. We need a competent leader for a change, one with a record of proven success, a leader who really loves and cares about our country's future rather than his personal image as apologist for our coutnry on the world stage like Barack. I see little not to like about Mitt Romney. I see nothing I like about Barack Obama and his liberal, socialist minions.

If he's willing to do this to his own party members to push the top down centrally managed approach that he says he stands against, just imagine what he'd do to people that don't belong to his own party. I know mitt's flip flopped on everything from healthcare, medicare, welfare, and abortion. I know he has money in swiss bank accounts and cayman island tax shelters. He has an impossibly/illegally large 401k (100 mil) when the contribution limit is like 30k. He won't show his tax returns, talk about bain (only qualification for president) nor his one term as governer (with healthcare as his only accomplishment). I know his campaign is out-fundraising the obama campaign ten to one and will undoubtedly cave to all those wealthy companies, individuals, or lobbyists. He'll flip and flop anyway they freaking tell him to. Sure Obama could've done a better job. He inherited a lot of issues, recovery has been (very) slow, but I'll take a man with convictions and a drive to help the majority of Americans any day over a right wing puppet.

I understand him and think he gives us much more hope and faith in America and its future. He's a proven leader and a great family man. I don't understand why people think that people with money are evil. Obama has money. Is he evil? It's quite ridiculous frankly. Money is not evil. It's what you do with it and the fact that Romney donates 16% of his income compared to .2% to 4.6% (depending on what year you are looking at) of Obama's donations says something. I know Romney better than I want to. This man claims to have paid his taxes, but won't show me the proof of it. He backs people who consider rape to be acceptable and believe that women can't get pregnant from rape. He hides his money in offshore bank accounts and ducks open questions on the most fundamental issues such as HOW he will "fix" Medicare and Social Security. I think we know him too well as it is. He's worse than Paul Ryan, and he wants me to live the rest of my retirement in penury, which for all those Republicans out there is even worse than "poverty".

Mitt Romney appears to be a decent human, husband, and father but these items will have no bearing on how he will preside if elected. The political Romney appears to be as secretive as his tax returns and there must be some reason he dosen't want us to know him that well. Politically I don't trust him one iota and the greatest clue he has provided is his selection of a Tea Party Guru to be his Vice President. Romney will be another "Don't Tax and Spend" republican and we all saw how that worked out with George W. Bush's economy. Same stuff – different term.

Oh yeah, I'll take Romney. I'll have what he's having. Obama is full of hot air. Handsome, but truly out of touch. OBTW, I wonder if the million dollar donor, Morgan Freeman (whom I LOVE), built his career? Maybe we should ask Obama. Oh that's right, we already did. Morgan didn't – someone else did. The one question I would have about Romney is this, When I was in the service I sat on a 10 megaton nuclear weapon and was scared to death. I want to know that the man in the oval office would be just as frighted as I was. Personally I think his thumb will be on that button the whole time he is in office.

One day Rommney is a moderate next day he is very seriously conservative and the next day he will repeal Obama care (his care) then the next day he is proud of the same healthcare system he wants to repeal so Jack my question to you is where do i start.

I would feel better about Governor Romney if he did the following: 1.Released the last ten years of his income tax forms
    2. Outlined the house and other staff that help him and his wife run his house. I suspect they do not do it alone like most of the citizens do, even those with severe illness. 3. Be more open about his religion.. would his church dictate how he decides on issues, etc. 4. Remove his off shore accounts to the US so he pays taxes on the earnings. 5. List all the sources of his election war chest, including those groups like Americans for Prosperity, etc. 6. Lay out in detail what he plans to do with Medicare, Health Care, Medicaid, Taxes for the middle class and high income earners, involvement in wars, especially the future of Iran.

In fact much more is known about Mitt Romney than is known about Barack Obama even after four years in office. As Tom Brokaw and Charlie Rose acknowledged in commentary following Obama's election, "we know little about the man and most of what we know came from his books" ( which have now of course now been identified as fictional characterizations of Obama). The only people who don't know Mitt Romney well are those that benefit from claiming no one knows him. Everyone in the country with any sense of reality knows much about Romney and knows for sure he wont spend four years blaming Obama for getting in over his head and failing to solve any of the cou try's problems. It's time to get an experienced executive in the White House to solve the country's problems before it is too late.

As a member of the middle class and someone who cares about the poor and marginalized, Mitt Romney being President frightens me. He wants to give tax breaks to the rich. I don't think he has been honest about his finances. He keeps bank accounts in other countries to avoid taxes. I read an article last week in which he said he really doesn't keep track of his investments and finances; others do. That means he either doesn't want to tell us his secrets, or he has no idea what is going on with his money. He and Paul Ryan are lying about President Obama "gutting" Medicare. I won't be voting for Mitt Romney.

This man is scripted by special interest money, and has spent 8 years studying how not to make the mistake his father made that cost him the nomination. In other words, Ann Romney doesn't even know this robot any more, he even walks like a robot. I know this, Grover Norquist strangle hold on the congress, and making them unable to govern freely is mild compared to what is about to happen now that our country has been bought and paid for by the super packs, compliments of the Supreme Court. GOP Governors have laid off state workers to inflate the unemployment rate, and everything will go back to normal if they win, ooops, including Mitt's truthful statement that he is 'not worried about the poor' of this country.

Miami, FL – I feel like I know Governor Romney very well. He comes across as (and IS) a successful business man, who is goal-oriented...just what we need to get our economy back on track. He looks like a lovely family man: to his wife, children and grandchildren. I trust his decisions and think we should be proud to have this good American running for our country's highest policial office.

Why hide so much? Why lie so much? If he's so "great" – I just want to know why there's so much propaganda? I was raised to believe that the truth hurts only once – and that a lie hurts forever. And if he's elected, sooner or later the truth will be discovered – he'll be impeached like Nixon – and we'll end up with Ryan as President. Do we honestly want that?

Even his supporters can't say much for him except that they have never heard bad things about him from FOX news. They answer this question with "I know I hate the black guy," every one. Romney's plan is to be "moral" and then everyone will become rich and famous and live 100 years. It's a child's plan, and he doesn't have another one. I actually don't think that Romney expects to win; this is a Trump-style business gathering of potential investors. As soon as the race is over, he'll build a giant casino and hire Chris Christie to run it.

What's there to know? He pays a lower percentage of taxes than most of the middle class. He wants to fix the economy with the same failed policies that got us into this situation in the first place. His state was 47th in job growth. He wants to set women's rights back 50 years. And he wants to appeal Obama Care which helps the poor, and lower taxes on the rich.

I felt I didn't know President Obama during his campaign and STILL don't know him. In my heart, I feel Mr. Romney will be the greatest President in the history of OUR country. How well do you feel you know Mitt Romney?

Since Willard has been running for president for over 5 years I can say that we have learned much about him.

He told the people of Mass to TRUST HIM, regarding residency requirments met, which was a LIE
    He is a LIAR
    He is Abusive to Animals
He fleeced many Americans out of JOBS and PENSIONS to line HIS pockets.
He flip/flops more than John Kerry
He refuses to provide his Income Tax Returns regardless of the office he is running for
    He is an Elitist
He is a TAXHOLE (one who hides his money outside of the US to avoid taxes
    He is a BULLY
    He is Anti-Women
    He is Anti-Children
He is PRO Business/Corporation "Corporations are people too my friend"
    etc..

He will NOT get my vote.

I want to give Obama a 2nd Term and I want to get rid of all those OBSTRUCTIONIST REPUBLICANS like Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, Eric Cantor, etc.. If there is an R next to their name they should be HISTORY. I want them replaced with Democrats and Independents.

What I do know does not sit well with me, at all. Raising my taxes so the uber wealthy get more tax breaks? Yeah, that's worked really well so far...Converting Medicare to a voucher system and killing it? That is the scariest thing yet. Probably go to war with Iran if elected? Even scarier. Not coming clean about finances/taxes/offshore accounts – that's deplorable. Can you imagine if Obama were Mormon, elitist/uber wealthy, and this much of a flip flopper? So what would make me belief he wouldn't lie to the American People if he were President, if it suited his purpose? I don't vote for the "warmness" in people. I vote for Integrity and Respect. Voters will not know the real Romney until he takes office, but his unwillingness to realease or even discuss his tax records, financial dealings, offshore accounts, tax havens and his full history and record with Bain Capital tells me EVERYTHING I need to know about his character. He appears to have NO integrity. Likewise his flip-flops on virtually EVERY important issue tells me he has no political values of his own, and will do whatever his financial backers tell him to do if he wants to get their financial support for a 2nd term. Voters, if you think Bush-43 was bad, just wait until Romney and the Repugs take over in January 2013 – Unless you're rich, things are going to get get very, VERY, bad in the USA.

I believe I know who Mitt Romney is as a person very well. I believe that the reason Gov. Romney has not been overly public about every detail about his life is because he believes in casting an image of humility, something that Governor Christie touched upon in his speech on Tuesday. In these hard economic times, I feel that it is all too easy to relate wealthy individuals with the handful of wealthy/corrupt CEOs whose negligence helped spurn the Great Recession. Unfortunately, I feel Romney is unfairly receiving this same perception.

He still doesn't have a clue. Besides, he might change his mind tomorrow and undo it all!

Every liberal wants to rip Romney for being rich. Everyone knows Romney is successful and rich and the left is so jealous they can't stand it. No rich person is responsible for the fact that I am not rich and only those that have given up on the American dream of becoming rich have a problem with it. Every liberal wants to rip Romney for being rich and blame rich people for all their problems. How about comparing Obama and Biden's charitable contributions to Romneys... The media wont go there. How about comparing John and Theresa Kerry's tax rate to Romneys....Romney pays way more. . John Kerry and his wife have billions compared to Romney's millions and the left never brought it up thus demonstrating their hypocrisy. Kerry's wife never agreed to release any financial tax returns and the media never even mentioned it demonstrating their hypocrisy. We know Romney as well as we have known any politician that has run for President of the United States.

How can Mitt Romney say that he is pro life and that abortion is against his religious beliefs?????????? He says that a child made by incest and rape should be aborted.......really? So is a baby conceived as a result of rape and or incest still a baby? Bottom line is the Mormon faith says anti-abortion......so Mitt Romney is against abortion period. he is only stating a child should be aborted due to incest and rape to attempt to reel in the female vote wants nothing to do with him currently. The mormon faith does not agree that a child should be aborted for these reasons, because they are anti-abortion as is he. I am 100% behind the Commander in Chief and so are soooo many of my military friends. Pro choice is just that and pro life is just that. Come on America Mitt Romney is not one of us he is hoarding his money in off shore accounts and wont release what sort of taxes he has paid over the last 5 yrs.......why? Everyone else like his running mate have disclosed theirs.....Mitt Romney is possibly either hiding something or....hiding a lot. He went down south and talked about "cheasy grits" to appear to fit in with a struggling South. He Sang horribly to appear to fit in.....He attempts 10k bets in public......he is out of touch with us every day americans.

I have researched Mitt Romney's positions to know he truly is multiple choice Mitt as Ted Kennedy clamed and has no firm convictions. He just wants the presidency to pad his legacy and for a power trip. Romney/Ryan would destroy the American promise and take our country back to the perilous position it was at the end of the Bush administration. Though Prresident Obama hasn't brought us out of the recession as fast S we'd like, he has stopped our country from going over the cliff into a depression.

I don't get this question. I have watched multiple TV programs depicting Mitt and all I can think of is he is one hell of a GOOD GUY! He isn't spending millions to bring down his competitor, Obama is. Obama is snarky and has only hateful things to those who oppose him. Mitt has shown his values, and that he CARES about other people. He closed down his company for days to search for a fellow employees missing daughter. He has helped support students college payments, and they weren't even his kids!! The list goes on, do your own research people. You can't always trust everything you hear.

Mitt. How do I know thee let me count the ways. I know your family moved to Mexico so they could practice polygamy. I know you passed Obama Care at the state level. I know just 4 years ago your views and opinions were 180 degrees from where they are now but since you lost you decided to try running telling everyone the RIGHT answers that you learned last time. Its only called Flip Flopping when Kerry does it. I know you had a Cayman Island tax shelter that you changed to your wife's name so you could run for office. I know you have a Swiss bank account. I know you won't release prior years tax returns and I know from the one you did release that you took a larger than maximum foreign tax credit that was carried over to the year you did release. I know the foreign tax language in our tax code is extremely vague so that if I or any other ordinary citizen tries to take the same deduction we are automatically audited and disallowed but when people of privalage use the same code it goes unaudited. I know every time you or any other rich guy releases your tax returns you seldom pay more than 15% all the while you whine that rich people are being gorged at 35% the amount they are supposed to pay. I know when you went to the Olympics it took no time at all to alienate one of our best allies. I think I know enough to make an informed decision.

I know Romney is just another version of Bush, but much more dangerous. We had 8 years of all the policies Romney and Co. want to put in place and it just did not work then and will not work there. We must grow the middle class again as Clinton did. You cannot blame Obama for the last 4 years of the worst congress in our history. They did everything to make him look bad, but smart people know all the facts. Romney does not care for middle class and lies and flip flops. He is for something that he used to be against and against what he used to be for. How confusing is that. He will not get my vote and I don't trust Lyin Ryan either. We know what we got with Obama and he has been trying. Also, don't want a president who keeps his money off shore and not in US. Republican supporters need nothing more than a nod to support this man no matter what. Us moderate independents need much, much more and shouldn't be blamed for noticing that this man and much that he stands for, as well as WHO he stands for, isn't shaping up well in just about any way.

Well, well folks what have we got here, both of the candidates are millionaires, President Obama as a wealth of $12 million, question is has he ever run a business? Romney is worth $250 million, seems he made some of that running a business. Since when is running a country a personality contest, we need to make a decision as to which business man can get Congress to start playing by the rules and put this country back on its feet again, funny thing no one has ever said anything about the banks hording all of the tax payor money they took and are not lending so business can be generated – thats another story. Mitt Romney may come across polished, but Obama comes across as just a lot of words and not to much to hang his hat on – end of it all it is a choice we make at the election booth, that is if we choose to vote this time around – personal choice again.

It seems to me, at this late date, if Mitt needs his wife, his surrogates, conservative journalists, and the like, to sell and humanize him to the American people, it’s already too late. Shouldn’t we know by now who this guy is considering this is his second kick at the can for President, and before that, a Governor and before that a CEO and business leader. How does that look to other heads of state, if Mitt’s own country still has to be sold on him
