Joe Biden: asset or liability for President Obama?

FROM CNN's Jack Cafferty:

Joe Biden's recent gay marriage gaffe is only the latest example of the vice president stepping in it.

And some are starting to openly wonder if Biden is the best running mate for President Obama in what is shaping up to be a close contest against Mitt Romney.

Republicans are making a strategy of targeting Biden, following him closely on the campaign trail in the hopes that he slips up.

A source close to Romney tells Politico that Biden is "a ticking time bomb. Who the hell knows what he's going to say?"

And another Republican describes the veep as "the chink in the armor" - someone likely to commit unforced errors.

Biden's off-script moments are legendary, from describing then-candidate Obama as "clean" and "articulate" in an interview to calling Obama’s health care reform a "big f***ing deal" on mic.

But Democrats insist Biden is the best surrogate for the president. He connects with working class voters in a way that the sometimes aloof president can't.

Also, Biden is a great attack dog who goes after Romney in a way Obama might not want to. Just yesterday Biden said Romney's time in private equity didn't qualify him for the White House any more than being a plumber would. Gotta love it.

Meanwhile if you listen carefully, the calls for a Vice President Hillary Clinton keep getting louder.

Clinton's approval numbers are through the roof, and some suggest that with Romney closing the gender gap and gaining among women, Obama should dump Biden for Clinton on the ticket.

It seems like a remote possibility, but stranger things have happened in politics.

Here’s my question to you: Joe Biden: asset or liability for President Obama?

Tune in to the Situation Room at 4pm to see if Jack reads your answer on air.

And, we love to know where you’re writing from, so please include your city and state with your comment.

It is sort of like the Abbot and Costello or Martin and Lewis team. Comedy is always an asset!! Seriously, I like Joe Biden and what he stands for, he just needs to stick the speech that was written for him!

Joe's an asset. Unlike most Democrats, he isn't afraid to step on a few toes and tell it like it is.

Biden is clearly an asset to Obama Jack. He provides comic relief and is a testament to the reality of foot in mouth disease. The only threat he poses is the fact he's just a heartbeat from actually running the country. Now that's scary.

Asset – I am sure. Their relationship before the public has been admirable
and should be adopted by future Vice Presidents

Joe Biden is so popular right now he could beat Romney by himself . Joe Biden is the likely MVP of this Presidential contest, if Romney picks a nobody for his running mate. Hillary Clinton, on the other hand is not popular at all. She looks like a washed up old dish rag and acts like one too. What has Hillary done since she has been Secretary of State? She has done nothing except issue a few travel warnings months too late after coutries, ( such as Egypt and Lybia ), have already plundered into chaos. Smokin Joe Biden on the other hand, has charmed the entire planet with his well thought out comments on current events. So prescient is Joe Biden, that Obama often has to play catch up and hurridly adopt Joe's positions. Joe Biden is a personal gift to mankind from God, I believe. Joe is a perfect blend of Leslie Neilsen and Ted Baxter. Everyone Loves Joe Biden, even Tea Party Republicans. Thank you Joe Biden. Doug, Pepperell, MA.

When we consider who and what President Obama is running against, VP Biden is nothing less than an Asset. An Asset who can go out and say what the President won't say and say what's on the minds of the average cerebral rationally thinking American...

Definitely an asset. He can talk the "kitchen table" talk to the very blue collar voters that need to hear it in their native tongue. The president is a very eloquent speaker, but not everyone speaks "eloquent" and they need a translator.

Biden is a liability to the nation, not just President Obama. However, Obama won’t get rid of him because he is just as stubborn as President George W. Bush. Remember Dick Cheney? In 2008 we voted for “hope and change”. Unfortunately, we are still singing “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss” – The Who.

Joe Biden is probably the biggest asset President Obama has however, when Joe Biden speaks, he speaks with such authority that it appears he is on the same sheet of paper as the President. My suggestion is, if he is going to be speaking until November, they better get things together so that the NEWS 24 HOURS A DAY don't make a big thing out of nothing and make Mr. Biden look like it is talking without any authority and just his own opinion. He ain't the President and he better not let himself look like Cheney or he will be a loser and a negative impact on the President.

Biden is the ULTIMATE quintessential windbag politician. A desperate pathetic fool who has spent his life pandering to a narrow segment of American soceity.....................the arrogant entitled union parasites.
    They love him.
    They can have him.
Slowly, Americans have learned that politicians like Biden, and his lemmings, are what has driven corporations offshore and destroyed jobs here at home. He is nothing but just another nail in Obama's coffin come November 2012.
    Republicans everywhere rejoice.

Biden is such a clueless clown that he actually makes Sarah Palin look and sound intelligent. Obama should drop Biden and ask his wife to be his running MATE!

Biden was only an asset when Obama needed someone to best McCain's possible running mate. Sarah Palin made Biden a golden choice, but since the inaguration, Biden has proven to be a liability.

To me Joe Biden is deftly an asset. I know sometimes he sticks his foot in his mouth, but one thing for sure he speaks his mind and is his own person. Joe came from humble beginnings and knows how hard it is for the average family. He suffered many tragedies in his life and his son served in Afghanistan. You will never hear Romney be able to say that. Joe is a Catholic and yet he was not afraid to come out and support gay rights. To me that takes guts something you rarely see in politics today.

Joe Biden is valuable to whatever venue he is in. A great Vice President. He is an honest man who cares about working people. He has had real tragedy in his life, and has compassion for others. What some call gaffes I call speaking his mind, and speaking the truth. He would never understand how tea party Republicans can say President Obama is not a citizen, or is a Marxist, socialist, Kenyan voodoo woo woo whatever idiocy they speak.

Biden is A Total Liability for All in U.S.,including Obama..Its impossible to have a V.P. who suffered a Brain Aneurism in 1989, then had staff take over his duties, Intellectually challenge a President.EveryOne Knows Obama is gonna tap Senator James Webb of Virginia to be his new V.P.

The old saying, "The truth hurts", is painless when Joe speaks it. In this era of lies, and deception in Washington. Biden's candid remarks, whether one agrees or not, is a breath of breath of fresh air. In the world of politics where falsehoods suck up all the oxygen, Joe Biden is an asset. Even liars don't like to be lied to.

I think Biden is neither an asset or liability. He does not add to or detract from the ticket. However, the democrats are missing a huge oppurtunity. If Biden steped aside and Hillary was put on the ticket, Obama would win in a landslide. And Hillary would be a sure thing for 2016.

If President Obama can't convince Hillary to run, then he should stick with Biden and turn him loose on Romney. Hillary Clinton would be a shoe-in for the White House in 2016, if she spent 4 years as V.P. That, at the very least, would ensure the country wouldn't have to suffer the damage of a Republican administration for at least 8-12 more years. We might be able to recover from the Bush years by then, maybe.

It was already known that Biden was one of the worse for "foot-in-mouth" disease.

Biden would have been a great asset only if Obama had taken Biden's advice on the Afghanistan War in 2009. But, Obama decided to own the war. Unfortunately!

Obama has reaped the worst of Biden, and none of Biden's good assets.

The Democrats should have presented a fresh president–why not a fresh vicepresident?

I have to disagree with you Jack. Biden is like someone's crazy uncle. You never know what he is going to say but people give him a pass simply because they think he is just nuts and pretty much harmless.
We still do not know who Romney is going to saddle up and ride If you would recall not too long ago a strange lady no one had ever heard of before named Sarah Palin was asked to run with John McCain for the presidency and she turned out to be the crazy aunt that everyone thought was nuts costing McCain the election.

All things considered, (no reference to PBS intended) I believe Biden is a plus for Obama. He has a great sense of humor, can be self deprecating and has believability that reaches and resonates with middle America. His experience in Congress probably helps the President a lot as he works behind the scenes on issues.

Joe Biden has always been gaffe-prone and Obama knew that before choosing him in the first place.Joe delivered his first gaffe at the very rally where he was being announced as Obama's running mate in 2008.He called then senator Obama "BARACK AMERICA".Even though he's full of gaffes, he's a tremendous asset for the president as he relates like no one else to white middle class voters whom the president has problems convincing.Removing Biden on the ticket would signal a sense of desperateness which the president would pay cash politically. he would simply lose.

VP Biden is a hiuge asset. There is no one else that could be anymore chalk to Romney's cheese. Biden couldn't be any more real, and that means Romney couldn't look any more phony.

An objective review would probably find him to be an asset but his perception among voters would probably make him a liability. With that said, it doesn't really matter. Hillary is the only other viable option and she's smart enough to know better than to take the job.

I like Mr. Biden because he is a stright shooter. However, the President will win in a cake walk if Biden was to drop out and Mrs. Clinton step in as veep. Just imagine, a black man as President and a lady as VP, wow what a historical move and one that many people including myself would support even though Texas will stay RED.

Mr. Cafferty, I think it'd be a genius move to get Hillary to be his running mate... then fire her on January 21, 2013.

  37. Rich in Gainesville FL

Only an extremely small percentage of votes are swayed by a candidate's choice of running mate and voters are already pretty much accustomed to Biden's off-script moments, so there's not that much downside in staying with him. Plus he has the experience of 4 years ago and he is the kind of "attack dog" that Obama isn't so much and Hillary probably couldn't be for various sexist reasons. I figure he's an asset. Just don't let him near the nuclear football.

Biden is a definite asset to Obama. All the crap you're spouting is just pundit talk. As far as gaffes are concerned, you have to be kidding me . There is so much tape of Romney gaffes and outright lies during the debates that they make up a box set. Is he an asset or a liability?

    May 23, 2012 at 2:56 pm |
  39. Ray in Knoxville

Jack, Biden does make mistakes, but he also seems to have that common touch, or is perceived to by the middle and working classes. His verbal gaffes, however, are just as liable to be offset by Romney's own verbal gaffes, of which we have seen many. That being said, an Obama/Clinton ticket is a dream match for the Democrats. Imagine a woman who has proven herself on the international stage, and who can actually handle questions from the media, running for the #2 office in the land.

Jack, Biden comes across as a bafoon and is not taken seriously by others. If Obama hopes to have any chance to defeat Romney in November he had better look to Hillary. She is his only hope as the approval ratings show. Hillary would bring, for most people, a feeling that dignity has been restored to the office of the Vice President.

Biden's "gaffe" you say? You mean when he was asked a direct question about gay marriage and the politician actually responded truthfully as to how he felt. That is shocking! Of course in the GOP, you could lose your club membership for speaking honestly.

Good God! Given what we now count as "news", it's a wonder we've made it this far.

I think this blog was the final straw for turning my view of you negative. You're sitting here talking about the Presidential race like its a popularity contest. Biden is the weak link? You're actually writing a piece about how the Republicans SHOULD run a negative campaign?? Not on the President either. The Vice President is the one you want to smear. He points out a vampiric history in business isn't what the country needs and you actually bashed him for it?! Seriously, what is the deal with you Repubs? Mitt Romney's JOB was to eliminate JOBS while he worked in "business", and you paint him as some saviour.

Oh and by the way, the Republican nomination process was a joke. You actually had a front-runner whos ONLY qualification for running a country was SELLING PIZZA'S!!! It's an insult to think we would bounce around potential candidates like your party. The only reason you want Hilary is so you can call Obama uncommitted, or whatever. Sick.

He is an asset. The Vice President and Mrs. Clinton are tied to President Obama at the hip. The three of them and President Clinton are his best ties to the American people. Not to forget bin Laden is dead under President Obama's administration. Compare that to Super pacs, Romney, President Bush, 3 wars not paid for and the economy in a downward slide left for President Obama to clean up. While republicans sit on their hands for three and half years. Doing nothing but talking about making President Obama a one term President. President Obama is a miracle worker for "We the People". Is it to early to campaign for Hillary is 2016?

Joe Biden: asset or liability for President Obama ?
    Answer :
    1. He IS a ticking time bomb.
    2. You NEVER know what he's going to say.
    3. His "off script" moments ARE inappropriate.
    4. "Biden said Romney's time in private equity didn't qualify him for the White House any more than being a plumber would" Are You Kidding Me ? What about the guy who was a "community organizer" ? Huh ? How about the guy that Voted "present" practically the whole time he was in the Senate ? LOL – Sorry Jack, but this "double standard" stuff isn't going to get it. I might be better off NOW , than I was 3 or 4 years ago, but the reason for that is because I'm semi-retired, drawing my pension, and only a few short years from drawing social security. If the voting place was more than a walk away, believe me, I wouldn't even Bother to Vote, to be perfectly honest. It seems like Obama is the one who is "armor plated", in my opinion. After the "Joe the Plumber" scenario, and the Jeramiah Wright debacle 3.5 yrs ago, then you've got tens of thousands of people that think Obama wasn't born in the U.S. – Then you have people hollering about his religion, or his skin, or his Mother being white, or his Dad being Black, in addition to his Dad being a Muslim, then you've got tens of thousands of people that has accused him of his relationship with Jim Ayers & the Acorn controversy – then you have Tens of Thousands of people that continue to use the words, "Socialist" & "Marxist" when they are reffering to Obama, then you have Hannity / Huckleby / Coulter / & don't forget about "the Rush" on the other News Channel – constantly doesn't have any respect for the man, plus they continue to bad-mouth him, and anything and everything he says or does, it's amazing to me that he is even Close to being tied with Romney ! By The Way – I have heard socialist and marxist more in the last 3.5 years, than I EVER HAVE, in my Whole Life !
If they put Hillary IN there, for his Veep, it will change the Whole outcome of this Election, in my opinion. Otherwise, the Democrats had better take heed to what Carville has said. ("Panic" isn't enough) (it's worse than that)
    Vote Democrat – 2012

Biden is a big bag of hot air. Every time he opens his mouth, everybody laughs at him. The Liberal Press's assessment is obviously positive of him. What else will they say. Biden misses the point. Give you an example when he criticised Joe the Plumber. Biden'sstatement was he's not even a Plumber. Biden missed the whole point what Joe the Plumber had to say. . It was all about taxes. Biden is a nice guy but he just doesn't get it. That's Biden's favorite line. Obama should get rid of him.
I'm not sure if Hillarry is the right person either. She has aged terribly. Have you seen her face lately? She has big bags under her eyes. I feel sorry for her. She has a very stressful job, but she is doing a great job. .

Joe Biden is an asset. I think he has a way of telling it like it is that off-sets Obama's side-stepping rhetoric. Joe talks about competing visions for Ameriica in ways that help people undertsand the stark differences betwee the DEMS and Republicans. No matter who you want to win in the fall, Biden is less of a hate-magnet than the President. The democrats would have a good shot in 2016 if Joe heads the ticket. I actually think that is probably his plan.

Biden is definitely an asset, especially among working class white and Catholic voters. Dropping him would lose states. More importantly, considering his likely debating partner is either some unknown or Rick Perry (Texas is more at risk than the GOP is willing to admit yet), he is a sure bet to shore up the ticket. More importantly, he brings foreign policy cred to the Obama White House. The fact that GOP talking heads are even considering making him an issue is the sure sign of their desperation.

Vice President, Joe Biden, is the VP and has been an asset from day one of Obama's presidency. To think of him as a liability to Obama is 100% media and Right Wing hype. Today's "media" does not report or inform the people of the world about news items, they create "stories" that will gain them audience and ratings. The same is even more true and more blatantly obvious of the Right Wing. At this point in time they are without political substance, credibility or influence in the presidential race.

The Right knows, as does CNN, that H. Clinton is not going to be a presidential candidate nor a VP candidate in 2012. If either had any gumption, ethical or credible character, this shameful, ridiculous and harmful (to American society) news "story" would not be exploited by either. Doing so only divides the people and country more, which is never in the interests of America's political welfare or political status in the world. Stories such as this are actual proof of the lack of character of those in our political parties and the media's lack of responsibility to its public. Thank goodness H. Clinton has enough integrity, respect and humility to not associate herself with such political drivel and divisive political tactics and Joe Biden has enough character and resolve to not succumb to such political defamation humiliation on the part of the Republican Party. Both are far above the Right Wingnuts and the shameless media.

Vice-President Biden – definitely not a liability for the President. Mr. Biden is a rare breed of a politician who is very
frank and aggressive almost to a point of being blunt but at least honest. How about Mr. Romney flip-plopping,
changing his views all the time catering to his audience to what they like to hear, if I were him I will dump his elite
sponsors, what comes out from his mouth is not really from his heart but under the watchful eyes and ears of Rove, Kochs etc. How tragic it would be if the Americans will elect a candidate tied to the same people around GWB.
The president will never dump Mr. Biden.

I don't think Joe Biden is a factor in any way. The principal combatants (Obama and Romney) will be the main focus in the upcoming election. The vice-presidential nominees will have little to do with anything. I can see no high profile republican stepping up and going after the nomination for vice-president considering the eneptness of Miti Romney as a candidate. Any republican of substance and ambitiion most likely will show some public support while not wanting to attach his or her star to Romney's candidacy.

If America ever hopes to elect a woman as President, now's the time for the strategic move of replacing Biden with Clinton. Joe could never take over the top job, but Hilary has shown that she has the moxie, talent, ability, energy and vision for it.

As Mitt Romney starts edging closer in the polls, President Obama needs to pull out the big guns. The biggest gun in his arsenal is Hillary Clinton as hiis running mate. She would bring in those married women who are strongly supporting Mitt Romney. Hillary would be a great addition to any ticket. If she were Republican, Mitt Romney would grab her first.

He is an asset to Obama. He normally follows his boss's orders and the every now and then slip of the tongue lets us know that there is always some humor in politics. He isn't a challenge to Obama and his political career will go no farther than where he is now. His downfall would only come if he gets more airtime than Obama.

Joe Biden is a senior statesman. He rounds out the Obama administration with his vast experience in foreign policy. Shouldn't the Romney campaign be monitoring it's own rather than Joe Biden?? Aside from being a plasticized individual who is not comfortable in his own skin, Romney should have a zipper put on his mouth, that ought to round out his campaign. The less we hear from him the better.

If you people can say that Biden is an asset then we know for sure that Obama is a total loser. It makes me laugh when we have to settle for these two.....Obama and Biden. Is that what our great country has come to? We have really lowered our standards......God help us if we have to put up with another 4 years of these two losers.

So a source close to Romney describes Biden as a "ticking time bomb" and another says he is "the chink in the armor." Meanwhile squeaky clean Mr. Romney articulated that Russia is our #1 enemy, he gets off an "aircraft" not a plane as ordinary people would say, and he enjoys firing the same kind of working class voters Biden connects with. The Republicans are undermining Biden because he has character that is desperately lacking in their Presidential candidate. A candidate who is nothing but aloof and out of touch with everybody except his own ilk. If Biden were to step aside in favor of Hillary Clinton the Republicans won't waste any time to attack that decision and her for whatever reasons they see as their own short comings.

Biden is not only an asset to President Obama, he's the President's secret weapon when it comes to connecting to Americans. A man who rides a train to and from his job in Washington in order to spend every evening at home with his children speaks volumes; remember Biden had lost the wife who stayed at home with his children.

*Joe Biden is a foriegn policy expert whose advise to President Obama on foreign affairs is priceless.
*Joe Biden is a seasoned politician and has been around washington for decades.
*Joe Biden is a honest "straight shooter' who will not steer anyone wrong.

I watched as Mr. Biden spoke the other day and what I got from it was that he believes that Mitt Romney's time in private equity didn't qualify him to be President and nor did it qualify him to be a plumber. I do not think it was a gaffe ... I think the press took it out of context. I am quite sure that Mr. Biden has absolutely nothing against plumbers. If the media would only listen to the words of people who speak instead immediately trying to make something bad out it, we wouldn't have all this garbage. Mr. Biden is definitely an asset to Mr. Obama. It's the media that is the liability.

He is neither a liability nor an asset. He is simply Joe Biden, and that is what makes him appealing to the Obama campaign. They get mad when he speaks his mind without clearing it, but ultimately, he shows a side of the Democrats many can equate with, just an average guy who may or may not say stupid things, much like Bush. Don't get me wrong, there is no comparison, but Biden simply isn't enough of a liability to shake things up, which would appear a lot worse to the voters than anything VP Biden might say when speaking his mind. I think we miss this in general from our leaders.

I would say that Joe Biden is a liability to the president but it would be more of a liability if he was dropped from the ticket. That would make Obama look weak and it would make his campaign appear to be in chaos. The only way that would be a good thing to happen would be if god forbid Joe Biden had a life threatening medical condition all of the sudden which would make him unable to serve. Joe Biden is an American treasure. What you see is what you get. He isn't the product of some spin room and behind the scenes strategy committee. He is a smart man who has suffered his own share of personal tragedy and understand blue collar Americans and their day to day struggles better than anyone else on the campaign scene. I think selecting him for the ticket may have been one of the smartest moves this President has made. So, quit with the Hillary talk-Joe means a lot to a lot of Americans.....I'm tired of this media push to replace him-let it go......He may not be slick and polished, but that works great for most of us.

First, when Biden says something, he usually means it and it’s usually the truth. That’s rare in politics and especially what passes for today’s politics. Second, if the Republicans are suggesting that he be dumped, you better believe they are afraid of him (looking to 2016 maybe?). And third, the Democrats should dump Obama and run a Clinton-Biden ticket. I suspect that would be unbeatable, but when were the Democrats ever accused of doing anything smart. We can’t trust or believe in any change Obama is offering this time (either).

I think we have a consensus that we'd all love to have a beer with him, but the fact remains that Hillary is a far more accomplished politician who better projects an image of talent and intelligence—which is probably why Gallup reports she enjoys a favorable rating of 66%, compared to Biden's 42%. Biden looks like a great guy, probably "awful smart," too, but he's the kind of guy that would make a great Press Secretary or Chief of Staff. Obama's number 2 should be Hillary. But when Amtrack Joe comes out talking about the middle class and dreams of moving up and demanding a fair shake... It rings true. Obama needs a little of that soot on the face get down to nitty gritty hard workin' Joe Biden magic to balance the ticket headed by one of the smartest and most polished men ever to take up the oval office.

Joe Biden is an asset. Yes, he tells it like it is, which is a good thing. And the health care law was "a big f-ing deal" whether it was said on mic or off. Biden has a long history in the senate going back to the days when congressmen worked together for the good of the country. He is very knowledgeable about foreign affairs. Most importantly, he is a man of integrity – his actions after his first wife was killed tell us that. A few moments ago on the Situation Room Mr. Cafferty described Joe Biden's "This is a big _ deal" as a "gaffe" that was not a gaffe. Nor is President Obama often aloof. Being personable is one of his stronger attributes. Also I notice the way Wolf nearly always frames his leads to Obama as some looming detriment or possible deficiency towards President. When you have to use "Some people think ...," you are desperately stretching. After all, "Some people" think Elvis is still alive. There are always some people who think something.

He is smart, honest, and cares about the good ole USA. We know his son Beau, and I can assure you there is no finer person anywhere, politician or not. I think Joe should head the ticket! And he never forgets little Dela-where! He still comes for chicken-and-dumplings to the Bridgeville, DE firehall. Joe/Jill 2012! There you go!

First of all, Biden is an excellent VP. He brings a wealth of experience and a willingness to express a contrary opinion. That is the first consideration. Secondly, I think his Common Man touch is what the ticket needs. While he may gaffe from time to time, I think that actually helps because it is honest. And the fallout from dumping him would not make up for any gain from putting Clinton or someone else on the ticket.
