It's critical for the US and Russia to have a good, solid relationship. But its just as critical for the US to remember who their allies are and not betray them. A stronger relationship with Russia by weakening NATO or allowing the weaker countries who depend on NATO for protection to be pushed aside is not the answer.

Better relations are very important, when I last checked Russia still has a tremendous nuclear arsenal and there is certainly a world market of individuals who would love to get their hands on those weapons and use them against us.

Ronald Reagan proved how important he valued our security (star wars) but also the need to put Russia in our universe of friends rather than foes.

Important! They are a trading partner, could be scientific partner, and a MARKET. Don't forget they have nuclear weapons - we need to be friends with these people.

Russia will restore it's Super Power Status in the next 10 years. If we do as the former adminstration and try to keep them irrelevant we will be responsible for creating the ultimate anti-American Alliance in China, Russia, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, and any other country that we treated like Dung. However if we bolster them up too much we may create a new arms race scenario with a Russian/Chinese defense pact that the US and it's NATO allies will have no chance in countering. Especially with the fact that China will overtake us in the world economic Markets in the next 20 years.

Making friends with Russia just makes sense Jack. With an ally that big and powerful, there is a lot that a joint US-Russia partnership could accomplish. As the global economy spins out of control, and the situation in the Middle East as volatile as it is, Russia is a logical ally, and repairing and improving relations with them can only benefit us.

With 3000 nuclear warheads being held by each of our countries, wouldn't you rather have them as an ally rather than an enemy??

I think it is in everyone's interest that the U.S. and Russia build a strong, respectful relationship. My first trip across the pond in the 80's was to the Soviet Union and neighboring countries. The people were friendly and interesting to meet. Russia has given the world so much in music, literature, dance, architecture etc., we should be building real bridges of understanding, appreciation, and cooperation; not tearing down a people we do not fully understand. If they could trust us, I think the people would prefer to be our friends.

Jack, America and Russia must communicate and work out differences. In a world which is coming ever so closer to chaos, from the citizens to the government leaders, it's time for all of us to make a difference. The economy, global warming, starvation, medical care and womens rights stand at the forefront of a world that has lost its way. If we hope to overcome these unprecedented problems, we have to all find common ground. It does not matter what your nationality is, for we all face the same issues. Obama is making a case for direct dialogue with any soveriegn nation, this is our only hope that will lead to change.

In a perfect world everyone would get along... Differences would be put aside for the betterment of the global community, and we would all join hands and sing 'Kumbaya'. Since this is NOT the case, it is important to have as many "friends" and allies possible. There is NOTHING good about being hated by everyone...
