I think it come down to biology. Biologically, women want to see themselves and their families taken care of. Democrat ideas fit that mindset. Biologically, men are meant to bring home the bacon. Republican ideas fit that mindset. It makes sense if you think about it. What I don't understand is why any woman would ever be a Republican.

Because they think they're going to get something for free. Same as a marriage. A majority of Republican women work for a living, they don't want a free ride.

Because women tend to be more proactive over issues and try to nurture, vs control othes. Many men who are insecure about their sexuality fear being perceived as being feminine, so they go for the hairy-knuckle dragging on the ground image, to hide their insecurity from others(and themselves).

I don't know the answer to that but, if it is true, then I am really proud to be one of them. More so now than ever before!

I'd guess the basis is the whole motherhood thing. Women tend to be slower at slugging out disagreements, preferring to nag....I mean....openly discuss their points of view.

Women are far more likely to put in the Lion's share of raising the children and the Democrats offer them more affordable and accessible education, health care, and early education while at the same time supporting abortion (which I'm sure you'll consistently find women favor more often than men – even Sarah Palin admits that she was tempted), equal rights, equal pay and anti-discrimination in a still-male-dominated society.

Also, women tend to be more communally oriented while men tend to be more in favor of "do it yourself" – which might have some influence on "government vs private" opinions.

Probably because we believe that empathy and compassion should be part of creating policy. Even conservatives liked to promote "compassionate conservatism" – women just want to give compassion an actual seat at the table of conflicting needs – not assigned to a forgotten corner of the room. It is a needed part of the conversation when legislation impacts our communities and homes.

Because Democrats like to spend other people's money. So do women. Democrats want to save every living thing that doesn't make them stand on a chair and scream. So do women. One reason I can think of is that for the most part women pay closer attention to what is going on in the world. Second in most households women do the shopping, bill paying and they know how bad the economy is in relationship to day to day living. It is a fact that when Rep. are in office the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. We can't get any poorer without starving and women know this. We have to take care of our families and when we are offered a chance to do that we go for it.

If you've ever taken any diversity classes you would know that women

I think women are more likely to be Democrats because the ideals of the Dems – fighting for the underdogs, really appeals to women because it is often we who will benefit. Women have had to endure sexism and sexual harassment, racism, ageism, and even discrimination because of our appearance too. Though we strive for equality, in some situations – like in our paychecks, or sports scholarships to colleges, it is still a man's world. The Dems care. The Repugs couldn't care less.

Woman tend to be critical thinkers. We do not just see that everything is in black and white; we see that there are different shades of white and even different shades of black.

Woman want to make things better, and see the need for others to involve themselves in an issue in order to improve it. Men see something and think, "if it ain't broke don't fix it."

There is a reason they say, behind every great man is a great woman. Woman encourage men, push them to do what they capable of but may not want to do.

Republicans don't want to get involved or have anyone get involved. Democrats are those that believe they can make a difference wth their involvement.

There it is plain and simple, no big words, no deep thoughts. Except for one, Republicans do tend to be chauvinists, but that fits also.

I guess no one knows for sure, what is certain is that there are an increased number of single parent households who tend to be headed by women, maybe thats why, maybe they want more government support.

I think the main reason for the gender gap is that the Democratic platform is open to all points of view on issues that primarily affect women such as abortion, equal pay for equal work, and women in positions of leadership. I am a registered Republican but increasingly find myself supporting Democratic candidates, and that pattern will continue as long as the GOP is being defined by right wing, overzealous, intolerant white men.

It is very simple Jack, republicans are too negative and are not inclusive. Whenever, a republican comes on the news and he is not negative I will listen, but when he starts with negative and partial true information I turn the station. The American people are not stupid we recognize bull when we hear it.

I think it's because women tend to have more of a collaborative approach to things in general. It's how they are socialized beginning as young girls. We men tend to separate ourselves out by category and then being aggressive by nature, we continually vie for the Alpha positions, whereas women see each other more equally within their own ranks, recognizing that each person brings unique perspectives and/or strengths with them to contribute to the collaborative effort for the good of the group. Oh boy, Jack, this is quite a question! The answer is a long one, but I will keep it brief:

1. The majority of women detest war.
2. Women tend to be more compassionate, and we see the Democratic party as more willing to help people, especially those less fortunate. For example, Bush vetoed the SCHIP Bill last year which would have provided health insurance for an additional 7 million children; Obama came into Office and signed the Bill into law.

3. Women are more likely to be supportive of Social Justice issues.

4. Women, know that if the GOP's far-right-extremists had their way, they would not allow women the right over their own bodies.

5. Women are more likely to be more fair. We despise the vile rhetoric from the far-right-extremists.

Because the Democratic Party is the party of social issues. Helpful social issues like health care for the poor and other safety net things. Not Puritan social issues the Republicans focus on.

That Republicans are "old, white, males" is the popular sentiment among many comedians. It may be that women are able to be more tolerant and rational to issues then men. Democrats are known to be more pro-choice than Republicans and more tolerant of different beliefs/practices. Therefore, it makes sense to me that women may be more likely to be Democrats.

Because they are the party that has the best interests of the working class at heart. They have always done this and will continue to do so. The opposition has always put the best interest of the rich and big business first. It is time both parties stopped all the fighting and did what they were elected to do, that is work together for the best interests of ALL of the American citizens.

The Poll results only show once again that women are more "socially conscientious" than men. Women are more interested in "fairness", "family" and "charity" than most men. I think that women have a maternal instincs that guide how they view politicans, The percieved concerns that politicans show toward issues that affect their children drive the choices women make. History has shown how recent politicans have neglected the care of our children.and that has changed how women view them as leaders. "you go girl" If the democrats want to keep the support of women, they need to take care of our children.

The old adage that Republicans are "old, white, men" is used by many comedians. I believe that women are more tolerant and more receptive to other people's beliefs/practices. Therefore, it does not really shock me that women are more likely to be Democratic. Democrats are more pro-choice and more tolerant of different practices.

There are many reasons I think. First may be the abortion issue. Democrats say, "It's the woman's body, and her choice." Republican's seem to overlook the woman altogether. Secondly, Republican's tend to be Christian conservative and Christianity is inately anti-woman or at least more pro-male. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors wife...what about coveting the husband? And thirdly, ironically is the respect of life. Repbulicans are pro-gun, big business, and both, unchecked, don't have human life in their core interests. I am sure big business would sell lead lollipops to kids if the FDA wouldn't stop them.

Honestly I think it comes down to a difference in emotions. I don't mean that women are more emotional and men have none or anything like that. Democrats are more likely to stop and think about what the consequences are. Republicans often go with a more "gut feeling" and these qualities are more present in men as a whole than they are in women.

The United States is a great nation because its foundation is the American family. In that typical family the man goes out and earns the money to pay for the family’s needs. At least that is what a typical family looked like in the 60’s, but the idea still holds true for today. The heart of the family, what keeps the family together and makes certain that everyone is tucked in is the woman of the house. Women have always played a critical role in all of our lives. Our mothers are the one person that cares for the rest. The Democratic Party cares for the family. Democrats have traditionally stood tall for the bread-winner, the one who has to fend for their family. Just like the woman of the home, Democrats care for their families. That is why women are more likely to be Democrats.

During the Great Depression it was the male that threw himself off the building to his demise, not the women. Yet women hold more of the wealth (we out live you and inherit). Women are patient and know things will turn around. Men aren't that patient. All traits of Democrates.

On average, women are far more likely to listen to their feelings and go with what makes them "feel good" than men who are normally less likely to let emotion dictate their choices. The democrats are a touchy-feely group that wants the world to be a happy place where everyone has what they want and everyone feels valued the same as everyone else. The Republicans are more pragmatic in their approach to social issues. Of course i am not counting the right-wing extremist view of things. For example, universal Heatthcare, Republicans acknowledge it sounds great but is very impractical when you take into account the price tag. Women have the maternal instinct that says people shouldn't suffer and we need to do everything we can at all costs.

Though some might say the fact that the Democratic party is identified with supporting a women's right to abortion, I think the support for Democrats go deeper. Democrats come across as more caring and less bellicose than Republicans. Democrats have several party leaders that are women and have high visibility.

It’s that nurturing thing, Jack. Most women care about others. Republicans appear to care about the almighty dollar, women towing their line on what to do with their bodies, and abject hate (sometimes violently) of anyone or anything different, under the guise of “Christian values.” The hypocrisy is striking in its scope. To gravitate to a Democratic worldview calls for empathy, understanding, and kindness, qualities more common to women in our society. On average, women also have more common sense, and more giving, nurturing natures. They tend not to be impressed with the so-called "strong father" model favored by Republicans.

Republicans are just plain MEAN! Women like to have conversations to fix problems. We like to listen and talk. Republicans try to brain wash us with "bumper sticker" slogans. Years ago, women took the majority position in most universities, and higher education generally leads to a more leftist political viewpoint. Women, also, probably tend to veer away from conservative ideologies and tradition, as tradition in this country has been markedly patriarchal.

The Democratic Party is more concerned with helping the people as opposed to the Republican Party which involves itself with Big Business. Since women are generally more compassionate by nature, it seems only natural that more women would be Democrats.

Well I was stumped so I asked a female friend of mine and she said it's because there are a bunch of old, arrogant white guys in the Republican party and a lot younger, hotter guys in the Democratic Party. I guess for some people it's just that simple.

Generally, girls mature faster and are smarter than boys in their teenage years. This tends to even out by the mid-20s. So it is more natural for women to be Democrats than Republicans.

If you knew how many of these women have hit "glass ceilings" or been left to raise kids alone with no help from their ex, it may explain a lot. When times are dire, you crave the less risky, more protective environments – something safe. I can see where women would not want the risks associated with some of the Republican philsophies. Government may not be a save-all, but big business has not been particularly kind to women for many years.

Oh, by the way – I'm female, 56, divorced twice, raised 2 kids alone and I'm a successful Republican executive – but it was not easy.

Republicans usually consist of conservative views with more aggresive policies. If you think of US politics as a relationship, the man is the beer bellied, deer hunting Republican and the woman is the peace loving, weary Democrat. All jokes aside, I also think it has to do a lot with the level of education, and women are, on an average, more educated than men and therefore have more progressive views.

Presuming to know what women want or think has always been dangerous territory for me but to hazard a guess I'd say it is because democrats supported and have now passed equal pay laws and support a woman's right to choose on abortion issue. Throw in republican's reckless attitudes for needless wars lately and it's a lock for the democrats.

Rebublican policies are things which are generally associated with macho-ness like they like war and conflicts with other nations. Democrats on the other hand like peace, cater for social issues; these are issues which women identify with more. I have to agree with Anna of Milton, FL.... I think women are smarter. There will be plenty of commentary here about why women would side with the Democrats–much of it joking, much of it snide–but the simple reality is that the issue is now, and has for thirty years, been almost exclusively about the issue of abortion. Right or wrong, agree or disagree, I suspect that the notion of whether they might be required to carry a pregnancy to term that they were not anticipating is sufficient for most women to trump virtually all other issues. As long as such a decision requires tremendous personal, financial, and emotional sacrifices, and as long as the issue continues to so neatly divide the definitions of the two major parties, there will be a gender gap.

Im a 17 year old male and from what ive seen, men are far more stubborn then females. Democrats are very interested in new ideas and changing the current system for what they believe is better. And many men just do not want to accept that.

Jack, I thought everyone knew this. The Demoncract party is a party sensitive to people needs. They are concerned about us, whether we have a place to live, food to eat, energy in our homes, health care, even transportation and communications. In others words it is an all people party, your race, color, gender neither your religious preferences matters. They are concerned about the poor and middle class people.

Democrats fundamentally care more about the well beings people. Republicans fundamentally care more about property. Therefore it follows that more women are democrats.

Mothers instinctively believe in fairness, and if they don't practice it, their children are constant reminders. Little in Republican poitics embodies fairness, so the Democrat bent is the obvious choice.

actually, it's that women are not shy about expressing their opinions honestly. while true that independents are a considerable percentage, the numbers lie because men get defensive about putting themselves out there, especially for such polls which they consider too invasive and opt for the independents category. i think overall, men and women have the same tendencies politically.

It's cultural. Men are in charge, and the Republican party, despite its insistence of not wanting Government to tell them what to do, conservatives WANT to tell others what they can and cannot do. Women have always been on the receiving end of this attitude. (1) Welfare Program - lots of women are single moms. They identify with Democratic Party which wants more welfare programs.

(2) Affirmative Aaction - Affirmative action program helps women get those high paying jobs traditionally reserved for men. Republican party essentially stands against affirmative action.

(3) Capital Punishment - Democrats are less supportive of Capital Punishment than Republicans, and this stance is in sink with women emotions.

(4) Abortion – arguably, more women are prochoice than prolife.

Why are women more likely to be Democrats? Research has shown that conservatives tend to be more "left brained" or concrete in their cognitive styles–black or white, right or wrong. Research also shows that women tend to biologically be more "right brained" in their cognitive style–less focused on absolute right and wrongs. So, fewer women are likely to be politically conservative. Also, women both biologically and culturally understand the need for, and value of, teamwork. We get that sometimes you are in a position in which "just pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" does not apply. We understand that there is good that can be done by government.

Various aspects can influence why women choose to affiliate themselves with the Democratic party. Liberal policies have be geared to included women's right to vote, affirmative action, abortion rights, and other public policies that preserve people's rights rather than to repress or eliminate them. When it was announced that Dick Cheney had a heart condition, I was totally amazed he had a heart. I find many Republicans to be, selfish, heartless, narrow-minded people. I'd venture my guess that more women are Democrats because we view the Democratic Party as being more attuned to the needs of average Americans and average American families than the Republican Party which we view as openly elitist. But, I could be wrong. It might be that women have eschewed rightist politics because we're born with a natural intellectual bend to the left and it hurts too much to lean too far in the opposite direction.

If you add up the independent and democratic percentage for men and women the gender gap seems to be almost eliminated. This suggests an intriguing thought: Perhaps women are more likely to declare themselves up front, on principle, as committed to organizations that fully support social nurturing. (That is, recognizing the interdependence of all beings). And men may be more likely to prize the power of logic. (Thus preferring to stay open to a process of reasonably sifting through specific strategies right up until the final choice of candidate must be made).
