What will U.S. look like in 50 years?

FROM CNN's Jack Cafferty:

The face of this country is changing dramatically. Consider these pretty staggering statistics: 47 percent of children in the U.S. under five-years-old are minorities; as are 43 percent of youngsters under 20 - that's according to new census data.

Today, 47 percent of American children under five years of age are minorities.

And there's more... as USA today reports, the United States is developing a significant generation gap between aging, white Baby Boomers and this younger, growing minority population.

Minorities now account for just over one-third of the total population; and although immigration is slowing, higher birth rates among Hispanics make them the fastest growing group. The Hispanic population is also younger - on average about 28 years old - than non-Hispanic whites, whose average age is about 41.

Among other things, these numbers mean that many Baby Boomers will be relying on this younger generation to take care of them in a lot of ways. In another generation, this will be the workforce supporting Social Security.

Already, about 10 percent of the nation's counties have a minority population above 50 percent. One of the counties that just became a "majority-minority" last year is Orange County, Florida - home to Disney World. The mayor says it's not a surprise to him, and that the county has always been "a snapshot of what America looks like."

Here’s my question to you: What will the U.S. look like 50 years from now?

Interested to know which ones made it on air?

Stephen from Pennsylvania writes:
I was born and Raised in Roseville, California. My 2nd grade class looked like the United Nations: Latinos, Italians, Chinese, Japanese, and a lot more. We used to celebrate each others’ holidays. Cinco d' Mayo, Obon, Chinese New Year, 4th of July, Veterans Day, Lions Club picnics. What has happened that we can't do this anymore? Have we become so separate that we can not be together? I hope we can go back to the past to become the future.

Ron from San Antonio, Texas writes:
Jack, I am very much afraid it will look a lot more like the town I live in: San Antonio, Texas. Have you heard the old commercials? "Texas, it’s like a whole other country." So, they are right.

Janelle from Missouri writes:
Jack, 50 years from now the U.S. will look like an impoverished 3rd world country. It will have absolutely nothing to do with anyone's ethnicity, but will be the result of our government bankrupting itself and every business in the country. The government won't be able to support the population when there's no one left to tax to pay for it.

Matthew from Orange, California writes:
The gene pool of the U.S. is really a minor factor in the face of issues like education, health care, employment, national security, immigration and self-responsibility. These factors will determine whether the future majority will live in a comfortable community or a slum.

Dee from Florida writes:
If we can learn to live with one another in peace and harmony, without any one ethnic, racial, or social group being ostracized or depressed, I think the U.S. will be a nice blend of the people of the world. And it's about time.

Andy writes:
Chances are that the U.S. will be the diverse melting pot it always has been, just maybe without all the old white guys running it. Chances are that the U.S. will be the diverse melting pot it always has been, just maybe without all the old white guys running it.

Immigration will have slowed dramatically 50 years from now. The way it usually works is we have a period of rapid economic growth, like in the 90's. Immigration is very high after this as people are coming in to get jobs created by that growth. When all of those jobs are taken, the immigration dies down because there's no reason to come here.

The United States in 50 years, will no longer exist. Like all other empires that were built on a foundation of God and His commandments, and then the people turned their collective backs on Him, and the empires fell into oblivion.
I am sure at the time those things took place, no member of their society would have admitted their country would fall, but it happened, and the United States is following that pattern.

Your nation has become one of corruption, evil, violence, and the American dream is built entirely on hopw greedy one can be.

Those in power, like the Bush family, the Clintons, Condoleeza Rice, Dick Cheney, and thousands of others, are out for their own personal gain, and they don't care in the slightest how many people it kills for them to accomplish their goals.

The United States will not even exist 1 year from today....never mind 50 years.

Unless I live to be 118 years old I won't be around, but if it changes as much in the next fifty years as it has the past fifty years most would barely recognize it. I would be hard pressed to name ten things that haven't been improved on or has gone away

As the world becomes smaller due to fast & easy travel and people mix, race loses it's meaning. Eventually we'll all look alike. No minority, no majority. Good thing too, we never had women as beautiful as Halle Berry & Beyonce Knowles a couple of generations ago. It's not just the US Jack, scientists have calculated that the last true natural blonde will be born in Finland in the year 2202. I'm guessing sooner.

Since the minorities (sic) make less money than "others", the tax base will have disappeared, the super-wealthy will "own" several minorities that will do their menial tasks for them, and all the Republicans will be happy that they kept their money to themselves.

It will be a mess Jack. Dropout rates and illegitimate births, both big factors in poverty and crime, are much higher in the black and hispanic communities. Unless they get their act together, there won't be enough productive members of society to fund the welfare state we have become.

Jack: The United States will be bilingual English and Spainish. Old people will not get old, and if you do get old watch out. Wind, solar, and hydrogen energy will be the only energy allowed. The air will be clean or someone will pay higher taxes. But in the final analysis, I will not be here, because in 50 years I will be 110 years old. My genes are good, but not that good.

A very interesting question, Jack. Probably neither you nor I will be around to see these changes. Think of what we didn't have 50 years ago – cell phones, laptops, Ipods, bluetooth technology, internet access, Twitter and the list goes on. I don't think anyone can even imagine what will be available in 2059. I hope the biggest changes for the future will be in personal security for all this technology.

America will be a conservative, progressive nation......as many don't realize, minorities, still have strong family, and religious values.....However b/c of our history of dealing w/ discrimination, we tend not to gravitate towards divisive issues, and pretty much let people live their lives, as long as it doesn't hurt society as a whole.....
Minorities, despite the news coverage, are hard working people who seek upward mobility.......a hand up, not a hand out.......We also have drive, and have learned from our white brothers, and sisters to want the best......we are pretty much the same as our white counter parts......

It will in no time be a majority Hispanic. When we give amnesty to the illegals with a new immigration bill and give amnesty again in twenty years to another twenty million illegal Hispanics it won't take long before we will be an Hispanic country. I am not racist or prejudice, but I believe that only legal immigrants should be granted citizenship. It is too bad if illegal parents are separated from their children by deportation. Separating parents from their children doesn't matter when one is being sentenced to prison, so why should the crime of illegal immigration matter any to a judge. It is time to end the illegal gateway into America and begin holding corporations criminally liable when they hire illegals.

We are a "melting pot". We will continue to be the beacon of "hope" that gives the world something to aspire to. We will continue to assimilate all cultures and in 50 years I expect the gaps between all the different ethnicities to be very narrow. I also expect the Hispanic birth rate to slow as more of their children find opportunities in America and they become more career oriented.

What the US population looks like will depend a lot on what the Catholic Church, to which many Hispanics belong, preaches about procreation. The world is already severely overpopulated, and the Catholic Church and its adherents promulgate greater overpopulation. If this trend continues, civilization, let alone the U.S. may not survive another fifty years.

The only difference I see is our children will have a little darker complexion. And if greed doesn't disappear they will be much poorer than their parents.
If their parents expect their children to take care of them. They had better began to take care of their children and grandchildren. What we are taught is usually what we become. And sometimes that is to bad.

The white population will be the minority. The US will be infested with crime cartells like they have them in Latin America. The national language will be Spanish and we all have to learn Spanish.
Economically as well as militarily the US will become irrelevant, corruption will be standard, our education will be at the same level as in Latin America. Look to California it is a prime example of what is ahead. In Florida you have to be bilingual to get a job. USA rest in peace.

The pendulums are constantly swinging back and forth in this country. Conservative or Liberal, religious or not, healthy or not, affluent or not, who knows where we'll be in 50 years. Given our current political direction, I shudder to think! I’m just glad I won’t be here to see it as we are now headed rapidly toward totalitarianism.

Our sacred Constitution is in danger of being overthrown in favor of a “New World Order” perhaps run by the IMF and/or UN.

A better perspective of future life can perhaps be gained by re-reading James Orwell’s book “1984”.

Unlike the GOP, I do not mind thinking of the U.S. in 50 years as a melting pot of diversity where Caucasion people may not be the majority. On its current route not too well. Over 50% of our citizens will be 65 or older which would mean that half the population would be supporting the other half on social security and Medicare. I don't really see what releasing the pictures to the public would add. I certainly have no desire to see them, and I don't know what kind of people are super-excited to see pictures of what happened. Everyone knows torture is bad– seeing pictures of it won't prove that anymore. And if the downside is that it might harm our troops, then I agree with the decision. In the interest of full disclosure, I am a Democrat, and I voted for Obama. I am in no way disappointed in this decision– it seems realistic, not dishonest.

If we don't STOP the churches from interfering with educating and distributing birth control, and allowing families to make the choice to NOT have more children than each can afford to raise, the minorities who are governed first by Church Policy will far out number those of us with any resemblance of common sense. It will truly be the "melting pot" our founding father's foresaw in the late 1700s. These new ethnic groups are fighting their way into our society just as our ancesters did when they arrived here from their homeland. Society will be all inclusive with interracial marrige a normal part of life. The children of this time will have perhaps ten different components to their ethnic heritage. I'm sure it will be an exciting time. I doubt if I'll be there but I do wish them the best.

All one has to do is look to the Roman Empire to know exactly what this country will look like in 50 years...IT WON'T EXIST as we know it!!

The Roman Empire collapsed due to over-extension of its military, over-taxation of the population, their leaders were as greedy as the SOBs we have in DC today who do not care about the citizenry, it could not support itself internally, and had too many immigrants.

    Sound familiar?

Regardless of race or ethnic origin, Americans are just that... 'Americans'. However, I doubt that any American 50 years from now will even have to worry about carrying retirees on their backs as it is estimated that Social Security will go belly-up in a lot less time than that. I think the underlying question here boils down to WHO will economically own America 50 years from now. And currently, that's what we should be worrying about.

Lou Dobbs is correct. The apathy of the Federal Government is causing millions of illegal immigrants to pour into this country to replace American citizens in our industries for lower wages. Now they want to give amnesty to twenty million illegal immigrants.
The population is growing dangerously, mostly fueled by unchecked birth rates among minorities; that is a fact, not a bias. What can we do about it – nothing. It is well beyond the point of no return.

50 years from now is pretty far off, but I'm going to take a stab say America will still look like America, a country founded by immigrants in search of a better life and willing to work hard to acheive that dream. It's skin tone might be a little tanner, but the country will still be the same.

My small white community that I was raised in in Washington state is now a colorful tapestry of Asians from all corners of the world India, Viet Nam, Korea and Polynesia also sprinkled in with Latino, Mexican, Persian and African. The good news is we'll probably be a colorblind society by then, thankfully. But the bad news is we'll also be the fattest people on earth, and thanks to global warming (which we continue to ignore) our current coastal cities will be under water as the sea level rises. By the way, this is assuming we all survive the upcoming pandemic of Swine Flu that is supposedly about to kill us all off.

We will be a very homogenous society. The nationality barriers of a century ago, you married in your nationality, will by then have spanned the racial/ethnic barriers still around today. In dog terms, we will be a nation of mutts. We will also be more politically tempered because of it. and just knowing all the current “Party of NO” wing nuts are no longer around by then is the best picture I can paint.

We are now a truly diverse population and a picture of the world. There should not be any more special hiring practices, as have been applied in the past. We should all have the same opportunities. Free education or scholarships, just because you belong to a special race or culture, should not be used in the future; as it then shows prejudice for other races (in a country that is supposed to be color blind).

If trends continue, the U.S. will be predominately Latino/Hispanic. How it will "look" will depend greatly on local leaders, Federal assistance, community conscienceness, and cultural moderation. The Gene Pool of the United States is really a minor factor in the face of issues like Education, Health Care, Employment, National Security, Immigration and Self Responsibility. These factors will determine whether the Future Majority will live in a comfortable community or a slum.

Moreover, why, former leaders are not tried at the end for going to war under the protection of lies, as done to Clinton and Nixon escape it by resigning! And many others.

    Jack,
That is easy. The late great USA will look like a third world country absent God and a work ethic. We are now in the midst of creating a generation dependent on what the government can do for its citizens vs. what they can do for their country. Once that happens, there is no turning back. The USA will totally collapse. Just look at the looming debt put on the citizens by this and the last administration.

This is simply a phase in the evolution of the human race and nothing to fear. As minorities increase in number, as they should, interracial marriages will, perhaps over thousands of years, eventually lead to a homogenous "Earth" race, rather than a mixture of different races who are constantly at each other's throats. In 50 years, we may not see much progress, but by then, we should be at least receding from the racial bias we still deal with today and be well on our way to a new and more enlightened civilization. There really isn't any other viable choice.

I am a third generation American and my family has always embraced this country like it was the greatest blessing and dream realized. My grandparents happily learned the language and adapted to an American way of living. What concerns and bothers me are immigrants who come here and have no desire to integrate or assimilate. I think it should be mandatory to embrace this country if one wants to live here. Don't resent it, don't abuse it and don't take it for granted (that goes for natural born citizens as well). And if that means giving back, participating in the community, volunteering your free time or even, like my grandfather, simply keeping your house clean and neat and the garden full of beautiful flowers then so be it. My point? I don't care how this country looks with regard to minorities as long as everyone understand and respect the wonderful gift of being an American.

Look at all the intermarriages right now!Men are marrying each other and so are women! Hispanics are not the only minorities!! Maybe 50 years from now people will finally come to their senses and not care about minority or majority and just deal with issues once and for all!!

Jack, so what? They are still children and someday they will contribute to this country just like our ancestors did. It's time for us to stop worrying about who came from where in this country. Remember, when the "gang from Europe" came over, they were the "minority" in the eyes of the Native Americans. It's time we just get over the minority issue. We need to focus on educating all of our kids so they can someday fix what many in the present majority have screwed up!

Before we ask how the U.S. will look in fifty years, we should ask why is that important. Unless the Canadian Horde comes South and conquers our little scratch of earth, We as a nation should look past the color and national origin of the legal citizens here. The time to worry about the ethnic makeup of The U.S. went out the window the second some disoriented Spanish Sailor accidentally stumbled ashore in 1492. We should be more concerned on how to bind ourselves as a nation and work our way out of the current messes we are in.

I viewed something on You Tube recently regarding population. Apparently in 30 to 40 years the United States will be predominately Hispanic, due to the influx of illegals ; and because they are having about 4 children per family) and most US citizens are only having an average of 1.6 children . Throughout Europe, and Asia the birth rate is down as in America, but since so many Muslims are immigrating to Europe (and are now having about 8 children per family ) Muslims will make up the vast majority in Europe and Asia in 30 -50 years.

  158. Linda Finch

It won't matter what the racial make-up will be because the most important factor that will divide us 50 years from now will be the gap between "the educated" and "the uneducated".
"The educated" will have domestic household staffs of uneducated workers from families who had more children than they could afford to educate. "The uneducated" will still have the lowest paying jobs, live in the poorest neighborhoods, attend the poorest schools and account for a higher population in the prisons.
Education is the only answer...how many times do we have to hear it? So it kind of sounds like fifty years from now "white" people and Asian people will account for 25% of the population and 70% of the wealth.
These wealthy will be able to afford the better nursing homes and medical care. Minority rights will probably apply more to whites and Asian people than to the majority (Hispanics). It'll be interesting, but most of us who are able to read and form opinions will be dead anyway.

As an African-American who has lived on 3 continents and visited well over 20 countries, I can tell you that 50 years from now America will still look like the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

50 years the entire north american will be taken over by the law firm ACLU, but it will be short lived because they will sue each other with no basis to the suits, and they will all lose their will to live and dye off, Mexico will migrate upwards and take over the country and live happily ever after.

    Jack,
The US is going to be the exact opposite of what it is now. Whites will be the minority, followed by blacks, and the majority will be hispanics. Who knows, in a hundred years, the US and Mexico might unite and become one country.

I think the world is a bit sick and tired of the term visible minority. I know that math is not one of the strong points of the american people but it is a bit obvious that non-whites are the visible majority in the world. When you go to Africa or India there is no literal designation for the whites that have settled there. They are seen as equal human beings. You people need to learn respect and you need to learn it very quickly...........

Jack, #1, at the rate everything is going in the U.S. right now, I , for one, don't believe that our country will exist as it is today(with the North American Union already in full swing). #2, minorities aren't going to be a problem as far as servicing Social Security, it will have long since disappeared (not that it hasn't right now). #3, the Mexicans have a partial heritage with North American Indians(instead of practically none for white Europeans), so maybe Karma does work; what goes around, comes around. #4, You and I won't be here, so it really doesn't mater all that much, does it? Impossible to tell. If all factors remain on their current tracks, white people will be a minority in 50 years, but white people will own more assets than the rest of the population. But what if there is bird flu or other decimating disease? White people will have better access to medical care which will radically change the face of America.

    Hi Jack;

Our country will look like the diverse group of immigrants from all over the world. After all, "That is America"

We all have an interest in how our world works and the countries from which we originated through our ancestors, and how we behave "together" in America.

    Jack:

What will the U.S. look like in 50 years?

Many of the wealthy and super wealthy U. S. citizens will be living in space colonies circling earth or somewhere nearby, while the lower classes will be producing and packing foods and supplies for them here on earth. The rest of the population will be trying to gas-up somewhere if they have not transferred to ethanol fuel products by then. What about me? I will probably be walking around with a cane wondering what happened to the world I used to know.

The future of this country looks very bleak. Not the from of government we have but the people in the congress are so fixated on their party that they forget they represent both partys when they take office. They forget the welfare of this country is in their hands. One year ago I sent the Speaker ot the House a suggestion on Health Care Finance. The reply I got was I should contact my representitive with the information. It was very short and turse. A long as the politicians are looking out for their self and not the welfare of the country the future looks very dim.

Cafferty....as time goes by and integration among couples grows, I don't think ethnic censuses will no longer matter, so why worry about it? We'll be a country of one color, which is way we all need to start acting like it.

America in 50 years will be like the roman empire just before the fall...........the dark ages are upon us. history will show that we had an opportunity to go on forever, but the inability to control our borders will be americas barbarian invasion-we are powerless to stop it because we dont want to hurt peoples feelings-thank god i will not be here to see the fall of the greatest country on earth. my only hope is that my children survive it. sad isnt it.........i pray for america. unfortunatly the people who can change things before it's to late are not listening.

In 50 years, if the country keeps electing presidents that do nothing, we may not even be a country. We may be taken over by another country or divide ourselves up. To make the country better than it is today, the government needs to get on the ball and work together for a better america and stop worrying about detainment of prisoner of war and useless things in the past. Use, from the past, the history that is needed to learn from mistakes not the history to make yourself and your presidency look better than the one before because you are messing up. Strive to make America better and actually do something about it. Without the help of the government, and the citizens the country will basically commit a slow painful suicide.

But will add that most Anglo-Americans will probably move to Alaska.. and have guns...

Also, This country may turn back and repent .. Then be restored...
Things move slower than we think people...

Ideally we will be a self sufficient country in regard to our oil dependency..
The Country will also have more public transit.. The markets will be good and we will still be the most powerful nation in the world.. This is my hope

How about the USSR. We will all be driving the only legal form of transportation, the United Autoworker Motors' Pelosi Econobox, that will cost $85K, get 30 miles to the gallon, have a trunk capacity of 2 grocery bags, and since only American labor will be legal, it will have the lifespan of 55,000 miles before it spontaneously blows apart. We will drive to our local government run foodbank for our daily ration of wholesome food, since all "junk food" will be outlawed because individuals can no longer be trusted to properly nourish themselves without government intervention. We will live in our modest cookie cutter, 2000 sqft home, painted white with blue trim, government mandated solar panels, preprogrammed thermostat to the government standard temp of 76 during the day and 68 at night, and neatly groomed box shaped hedges not to exceed 36 inches in height or diameter. It will be a dream, Jack

In 50 years, hopefully the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central American countries, and South American countries.....will all be One with One currency, One American Government (with each current individual Country) with representation. In other words, it would be Local/City, County, State, Country....with One American Democratic Government.

We, American's who live within the United State, should be speaking several languages......especially......Spanish and English. Most European's speak many languages.......why are we so hung up on just speaking English......DAH !!!!!!!

    Jack,

It will look like the United States of the World. Isn't that what was entended in the first place? "Bring me your sick, your poor, your downtrodden,.........." It did not specify race did it? No, but now, things are getting "sticky" and we, being the real Americans, want to get picky. Bet the American Indian never had a chance to get that thought from his brain to his mouth.

So what then? Go Save the Queen????

    Dear Jack,
The US policy on the countries south of its border is replete of distablizations, coup d´etas and assassinations. As a result people
were upprooted and forced to flee in mass to the border of the US.
As the HOLY BIBLE teaches us "They sow the wind and they reap
the whirl wind" the US will look like the reflection of its unintended consequence of its policys i.e. Latin,Hispanic. What you sow is what you reap.

In fifty years most Americans will only know The America we live in
today by our past history. Since illegal immigration policies are
doing away with much of the rule of law & we currentally have a Congress and a President hell bent on Amnesty plus chaib migration,
and on & on–our boomer population can forget retirement as they
planned– so can all of the younger Americans–because there will
    be nothing left for them.

Tell President Obama not to go to Egypt and invite the Egyptian leader here. The truth is gonna come out, we have internet and people who want to leak them. So to keep our President safer, we need to have him cancel until the "Bush Torture regime is prosecuted!

What a question Jack :) I see more new laws, things that none of us ever dreamed were possible coming into existence. I see a lot of changes and new experiences in life ,that we as a people will have to learn to adapt to. I see a new category on job applications in classifying individuals. As long as I still see my friends and family and the situation room I'm happy.

May 14, 2059? Well, it will be the "Year Of The Rabbit Or Cat", & they probably still won't have their minds made up which it is! We'll have 12 Presidential Elections, by then maybe Sarah Palin can win one, it will be her year to have fun, like the previous multiples of 12! I'm getting all this from the Chinese Zodiac! I'm kind of like an Astrologer! I would like to jump ahead a little to 2066, if I can?! By then my 60 years of bad luck will be worn off from Christmas 2006 when I was going to get married, but a Grinch stole it for 60 years, therefore, "I'm just sitting here watching the Wheels go round & round"(John Lennon)! Seriously, I think, the females will have more & more to say, with Sarah Palin as President, someday! And I hope we have some trees left to save us from the Sun, which just seems to be getting hotter & hotter! Build "Plastic Houses", or something like that?! Wait until June(6) 6, 2066?! That's better than 666(June 6, 2006)!! Bill Klatt-Saint Joseph, MI
