She just has class that hasn't really shown since Jakie. Not to say the other first ladies did not have have class that is not true at all. I believe
it is just how she carries herself and she does that very well.

I think its because she has the knack for conducting herself in a very dignified manner while giving off a sense of "down to earth" at the same time. And the fact that she is both intelligent and attractive doesn't hurt either. She has a smile that lights up the whole room when she walks in.

Michelle is a strong intelligent and outspoken woman. We saw that on the campaign trail. I believe she learned from Hillary's unfortunate mistake to not start trying to "change" things right away or too fast. The male dominated congress doesn't take to uppity women, so she's keeping a politically low profile, playing the first lady game and I hope someday soon we get to see the smart and sassy business woman she really is – the country has problems and we could use a woman's point of view.

I think it's primarily because there's been such a vacuum in the area of American sophistication for so long. Charm and a relaxed demeanor goes a long way. Contrived and queenly sayings, nods and rants are annoying and transparent.

She has shown concern for people's problems and reached out to diverse groups. During the campaign she was unknown except for questionable associates like Farakan.

I think Mrs. Obama's surge in popularity is that she's not acting like a politician. Her power doesn't come from who her husband is, so she's free to be her own woman. At the same time, she doesn't seem to feel the need to prove herself to everyone. She seem genuine, and is a good role model.

I don't know where those high ratings are coming from I hear his approval ratings have dropped below 50%. I read many polls taken by Lou Dobbs CNN which the has Obama at 39% being able to resolve the financial crisis. Apparently the polls mentioned in this was taken by a liberal source.

Mrs. Obama seems genuinely happy. That's an infectious quality and people need someone like that around in days where happiness has become far too rare a commodity.

How about the fact that she's genuine, natural, down to earth, is not afraid to get her hands dirty, is classy, smart, intelligent, educated, beautiful, inside and out. You're joking, right?! Michelle Obama's popularity has surged because she isn't a phony. She is a positive role model for girls and women. President Obama is one lucky man to have her as his wife.

The hyped-up, ultra-over-the-top, national media slobbering all over her "bare arms" and her over-blown "fashion sense" is the main reason, Jack. Her touching the Queen is something that even an Okie, back-woods hick like me would know better than to do.

She seems like a real down to earth person that the common people can relate to. There is no phoniness about her. What is important to her are the same things that are important to the majority of the middle class Americans. She is a real classy person.

What surge ? She is entitled and receives respect as the first lady, but make no mistake, unless she is two-faced, her attitudes haven't changed and she is a political liability.

Authenticity, if you really want to sum it up in one word. She worked her way from the bottom to the top. You know how little boys wanted to be like Mike, now little girls, big girls and women all have someone they want to be like, Michelle.

It's simple. She can identify with anyone from the south side of Chicago to Buckingham Palace. I know her ex-governor thinks he is the embodiment of Ruyard Kipling but Michelle is really one of the people Kipling was thinking about when he wrote "IF."

The fact that she is a modern, confident woman, who has a loving husband, adorable children that are not spoilt, and who is not afraid of being approachable plays a large part in her popularity. Also, she is regarded as a positive role model: she works out, eats healthy food, relishes her family, is confident enought to mix couture clothes and off the rack clothes, and yet is intelligent and knowledgable.

I remember a lot of First Ladies, from Mamie Eisenhower to Jackie Kennedy (of course, look at MY name!), to Lady Bird Johnson, Pat Nixon, Nancy Reagan, Roslyn Carter, Betty Ford, Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton, and Laura Bush. Each has brought their own unique stamp to the position of First Lady although some have been more memorable than others. I think that Michelle Obama will also make a unique spot for herself, and be regarded as special.

She is an accomplished savvy person who just happens to be easy to know and talk with and she knows who she is and because she does, she is full of charm. I can't imagine anyone being around her and being uptight. She is calming. She has the talent of making everyone feel warm and comfy. She is not afraid to wear J.Crew and make it a new easy fashion. She is just the best! Such an easy smile.

The whole brouhaha around her so-called 'unpatriotic' demeanor was simply contrived for news sensationalism and political mischief. Most Americans clearly understood what she said and the context in which she said it. So, 'much ado about nothing', as is generally the case with these types of things during political campaigns.

She is relatively young, clearly vibrant, engaging, and well-meaning, from all outward appearances.

I met Michelle Obama while she was on the campaign trail and found her to be as remarkable then as she is as the first lady. I took the negative hoopla as the other side taking small snippets of something she did and said and labeled her accordingly. I was proud of her as the candidates wife, but I have to say even I am totally blown away with First Lady Michelle Obama.

I can't keep the smile off of my face as I watch our First Couple represent the United States abroad with so much class and intelligence.

I think her appeal lies in the fact that she's an individual. She says things that aren't always polished–yet she's capable of being very articulate. She doesn't look or act or dress "safely" which is a departure from (meaning no disrespect) the Laura Bush's or Cindy McCain's of the world. She clearly loves her husband and adores her children. She shows impatience, humor, joy, fun, and fatigue–there isn't a "shell" or an act. She's clearly smart but you get a sense she'd be fun to spend time with. What's not to love?

However, thanks to your 24/7 coverage, people just see more of it. How many times did you show Laura Bush visiting a school as the lead on prime time news? As a former teacher I'm sure she visited hundreds of schools. She doesn't need a press secretary; she has thousands of them in the MSM. As one of the 17% who aren't impressed I wish you'd tone it down.

The more I've seen of Barack Obama, the more I've come to respect and admire him. The same is true of Michelle. They are in the news constantly now, but a year ago, that wasn't the case and too many people jumped to the wrong conclusion about these two for awhile.

But seeing the two of them together ... hubba hubba! What a turn-on! People finally get to see a great example of two people being sexually attracted to each other as a part of their mutual respect and admiration for each other – great example to set for humanity. I dig it!

It's the first time in a generation where we have a First Lady acting like.... a First Lady. Hillary turned some people off because she was over involved in government, and Laura turned some people off because she came off like a wax sculpture. Michelle is neither of these and I think that is very comforting to most Americans.

I think that Michelle Obama (and the President) are some of the most genuine down to earth individuals to have ever served as President and First Lady in my life time. People are attracted to people who are real, who are really the cliche, "what you see is what you get." I believe Americans are not used to seeing that quality (realness) in their leaders. Mrs. Obama's humble, middle-class up bringing has prepared her for this role and her background and warm personality serves to remind us all of the values that has always personified the greatness of our people and our country.

The simple reason her popularity has increased so much: the public has gotten to see the real woman. As the country has gotten to know her, some stereotypes just didn't hold true. Michelle is very authentic, honest, and confident–and she does a great job of keeping things real. Her husband has flaws too! Her kids have to make their beds too! Well, you said it "she is real." To me the First Lady is doing what I would hope the spouse of our President would do. FYI I was (am) starkly opposed to the policies of and the man President Bush, I did not agree with the former First Lady on some of her ideology, but I did appreciate her and found her to very level and good. Hate to say it, Jack, but it may be relief. Many - not me - may have feared that, because Mrs. Obama is a well-educated, professional woman, she would be a Hillary-like First Lady injecting herself into policy. I never quite understood the original negative response that some people had to Michelle Obama...I pretty much attributed it to "knee jerk" response based on media sound bites tring to characterize her as something she wasn't in the first place.

Well just compare her to some of the others! Barbara Bush seemed very distant and more like a grandmother, than a lst lady. Laura Bush had that phoney smile plastered on her face and she definitly looked frigid certainly not appealing at all. Brown skinned people have to pierce through prejudice much more than lighter brown skinned people to be accepted. Although Michelle may have said some contraversial comments during the campaign she has let her actions speak since becoming first lady. Its refreshing to finally have a woman in the White House who is using her position in a way no other Caucasian First Lady has in decades. She sure has done more than Laura Bush! Its amazing to see an African American woman prove all the stereotypes wrong! She gives hope to minorities, women, and the country alike.
