FROM CNN’s Jack Cafferty:

President-elect Barack Obama met with Senator Hillary Clinton last week, and since then, a lot has been made about the possibility of Obama’s former rival becoming his secretary of state.

The big question this week is what sort of problems Bill Clinton could cause in the vetting process of his wife. Since he left office, President Clinton has started a new career which involves some “complicated international business dealings.” He also has a global foundation with a long list of donors who may not all agree with incoming President Obama’s policies.

But the Clintons have been here before. If Hillary gets the “all clear” and is offered the job, the next question is: Should she take it?

After losing the democratic presidential nomination to Barack Obama, Clinton returned to her old job as the junior senator from New York. She’s very popular with her constituents and could likely remain in the senate as long as she wants to, perhaps even becoming a senate leader. But if she takes the Secretary of State job, she will tie her career to the successes and failures of the Obama administration. If Obama stumbles, she likely would have an easier time making another run for the White House from the Senate.

Here’s my question to you: What is the proper role for Hillary Clinton in President Obama’s administration?

Interested to know which ones made it on air?

Vera from Baltimore, Maryland writes:
From my vantage point, she shouldn’t have a role. She should stay in the Senate and help get Obama’s legislation passed. If she becomes secretary of state, she will need someone to actually manage the state department better than she managed her campaign.

Paula writes:
Hillary is the right choice for Secretary of State. I love the fact that Obama feels secure enough to choose people who won’t just be “yes” people. I think he is smart to look to people who may not necessarily agree with him all of the time.

Mason from Tuscaloosa, Alabama writes:
Hillary Clinton would be great in Obama’s cabinet. That way she can continue with her interpretation of Obama’s message: “Change you can Xerox.” Come on now, if he appoints her, he might as well give Dick Cheney a job. That’s not change; it’s more of the same.

Maria writes:
Advisor only. Bill has too many hands in foreign cookie jars for the Clintons to be objective and not a liability to Obama. She is an excellent politician, but an Achilles’ heel to the Obama camp because of her husband.

Tom from Tucson, Arizona writes:
I would think Secretary of Health and Human Services would be the ideal place for her. Senator Clinton has always made healthcare one of her top issues. It may not be as sexy as the Secretary of State position, but with an annual budget of over $700 billion a year, it is certainly influential and affects millions of Americans in a very personal way.

Curt writes:
Any role she wants and he should pay off her debt. He wouldn’t be where he is without her.

William from Vero Beach, Florida writes:
Getting Hill off the Hill also puts the chill on Bill. He wouldn’t dare engage in international mischief if she were Secretary of State…or would he?

Daniel Ambrose   November 18th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Jack,
I beleive that Senator Hilliary Clinton would be the ideal and excellent choice to serve as Secretary of State. This is where it is heading and all sources and media leaks leans toward her become Madam Secretary of State and she would do wonders!

Daniel,
Atlanta, GA

Joe in DE   November 18th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

Next appointment to the Supreme Court.

Ron in Oregon   November 18th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

I have always though Hillary Clinton would be the perfect Secretary of State. She knows much about the world, and she is determined, and Obama would be wrong if he chose anyone else.

Mickie   November 18th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

I think that is something for Pres. Elect Obama to decide. When I voted for Obama, it was because I thought he was the only candidate that showed any integrity and intelligence and what role Hillary or anyone else may or may not play in his administration, he is the one that has to believe they can work with him on his terms.

meg ulmes   November 18th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

Jack–
I think that HIllary’s role in Obama’s administration should be whatever Obama and Hillary agree that it should be. Hopefully, that role will be whatever is best for the country.

Troy, Ohio

Connan in Florida   November 18th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

If Obama does not give Clinton the role of Sec. of State, then he needs to at least give her the job of Attorney General. She is intelligent, has the experience, and the inside information required for the President’s administration (it would also be cool if her husband were to become a Supreme Court Justice).

Janis, Lafayette, IN   November 18th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

The rumor of Sec. of State would be an ideal position for Sen. Clinton. She would also be great at Sec. of Education or Attorney General. No matter what position she is offered, she would be an asset for the Obama Administration.

Audrey Fryer   November 18th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Hopefully, its not as Secretary of State. More and more Republicans are pushing for her in this position and I find that very very scary. This woman is a “Hawk” of the highest order and that is definitely the wrong job for her. We need a diplomat that sees both sides of the fence.

Audrey

DAN FROM BLOOMINGTON INDIANA   November 18th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Leno last night made a pretty funny comment when he stated that she was a whisper away from the presidency and now she is being offered a job as a secretary.
really though, I think she probably would make a good Secretary of State although she would probably prefer to remain in the senate so that she can work on her run in 2016.

Jason, Koloa, HI   November 18th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Disgusted onlooker

F. Taylor   November 18th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Her smartest choice would be on the Supreme Court where you are guaranteed a life long job regardless of how feeble your mind or physical health becomes.

Actually that appointment would serve both Obama and Hillary well since it gets her out of the way for ever and ever amen.

Brett in Oriskany,Va   November 18th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Yes, Hillary nee a prominent position in this administration. I’ve read that Bill’s foundation may cause some conflict of interest issues for a sec. State, but other positions like the supreme court or attorney general would suit her talent.

Allan Hanson Cameron Park Ca.   November 18th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

I think she should stay in the senate. She can do more good there than in a cabinet post.
I do think Bill Clinton would be the best choice for Secretary of State. He is one of the most popular and most effective people in this country. Well respected by most other countries, I don’t know anyone else that has his qualifications for this important job.

D. R. Texas   November 18th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

She would’n be bad as Sec. of State

Paul Anthony Maglaya   November 18th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

Hillary Clinton could be an advisor for the foreign affairs for Obama if he don’t choose her because of Bill Clinton. If Obama choose Hillary for Secy of State, maybe it will be a good idea too.

Tom, Avon, Maine, The Heart of Democracy   November 18th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

She has shown a willingness to work with others lately. I think she’ll make a huge contribution wherever she turns her hand.

Dave   November 18th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

RE: Hillary in Obama administration—
The answer is easy— keep her out of it completely. She’s a war mongerette of the first order. She causes enough problems as it is in her role as senator from New York.

Brendan Peo   November 18th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Well, there is obviously a spot for her in Mr. Obama’s administration. The real question is whether or not the nation want’s to put up with another Clinton working in Washington? Please take her…New York’s had enough!

Brendan- Albany, NY

Cori from Colorado   November 18th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Hillary would do a great job, no matter what her role is.

JD, Greenville NC   November 18th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Senator Clinton should, at least in private, play the role of a forceful critic of Obama’s decisions. Her willingness to question and challenge others helps prevent the ideological blindness we’ve seen in the Bush administration.

Jane (Minnesota)   November 18th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

I would personally like to see her remain in the Senate, but if the new President & Hillary feel she could help the country succeed in another role – go for it!

Michael Raptis - Florida   November 18th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

My question is why don’t we hear the name Colin Powell mentioned as our Sec of Defense?

Dave, Brooklyn, NY   November 18th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

While I’m not fond of Hillary, she’s earned it and deserves a highly ranked place in the administration.

Caroline, Hamer SC   November 18th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

She would make a great Secretary of State. After what we have had with the Bush group.

Sarahkatheryn   November 18th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

She’d be fine as Sec of State but I wish she could be in the Senate Leadership instead… she’d be so much better than Reid

Rich Mckinney, Texas   November 18th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

To be seen and never heard.

Jackie in Dallas   November 18th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

I know she is being considered for Secretary of State, and she’d be good at it, but she does come with baggage in the form of Bill and his international ventures. Personally, I’ve always thought that she’d be magnificent as Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare. After all, universal healthcare is her biggest issue, followed closely by education.

Lois, Ont., Canada   November 18th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

People are ’sick’ of the Bushes & Clintons running the country. Leave her whre she is!

John in Atlanta, GA   November 18th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Hmmm, I think she would be a great Sec. of State, however, Bill, who I voted for and respect immensely, has done some questionable things that would detract from her and President-Elect Obama’s effectiveness. I see her as a more effective Supreme Court Justice.

ajks   November 18th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

She should be the White House telephone operator/receptionist. That way she can answer those 3:00 a.m. calls.

Chris Cuberovic   November 18th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

She should not be rewarded with any position in Obama’s administration. Did you all forget, what kind of opinion she had about Obama in a bid for candidacy.
If she is to get a posting, give her Attorney General and that will suits her and new administration the best.

John, Long Beach CA   November 18th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Secetary of State works for me. I also think most Americans and world leaders would it.

Sherrol in Canada   November 18th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

I’m not so convinced she should be Sec of State. Believe it or not, I’m still not convinced that she has the Pres-elect’s interest at heart (even after all she’s done…yada, yada). But then again she isn’t stupid, if she is appointed that role, she wouldn’t ‘mess up’. After all there’s the Clinton name to uphold and her future in the balance.

Willow, Iowa   November 18th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

I think that PE OBama has decided where people should be placed in his cabinet. And his plan is probably way more organized than all of ours. I will be happy with his decisions on cabinet members. He has shown through the entire election process that he’s organized, smart and plans ahead. so I will be happy with whatever he decides.

Mari Fernandez, Salt Lake City, Utah   November 18th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

Hillary Rodham Clinton will make an excellent Sec. of State or Sec. of Health. She can still run for the presidency in 2016. I do not agree with the folks, suggestion Hillary for the Supreme Court, she doesn’t have the experience needed. She hasn’t practiced law in years!

pat tennessee   November 18th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

None. The Clinton’s are one big headache, whatever they’re involved in. I voted for Obama and this decision of his has been a real turn-off for me. They should be shut out of everything.

Bill from MI   November 18th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

I agree with Joe in DE. The next supreme court appointment for Hillary would be the best thing that has happened in many years

vern-t anaheim,ca   November 18th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

i think sen.clinton should turn down the post of secretary of state because a lifetime appointment to the u.s. supreem court will be available soon.bill richadson govonor of new mexico is amply qualified to become secretary of state and would be my choice if hilary doesn’t take it

Engels F. (N.E., Philadelphia, USA)   November 18th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Jack,
I agree with both Mickie and Connan from Florida, I believe that the decision should be left solely for Obama and his transition team. I also believe that Hillary would be a great asset for Obama regardless of where Obama and his transition team would decide to put her. I hope that she gets the position of Secretary of State, or any position that Obama thinks she would benefit more for the Country.

Connan in Florida   November 18th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

For those that know that Bill Clinton would make a better Sec. of State then his wife, unfortunately, he can not be given the position due to the Presidential Succession line up. I would welcome him, but, God forbid something were to happen to the other four, it would violate the United States Constitution.

Mary from Houston, tx   November 18th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Special prosecutor to investigate bush/cheney criminal actions.

Susan, Sequim WA   November 18th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

I’m not sure that Hillary is the “Change We Can Believe In”, but I voted for Obama because he’s way smarter than I am and I’m sure he must know something here that we are all missing…at least that’s my hope!

Ryan in Indiana   November 18th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

I would be happy with Hillary in the Secretary of State position. She deserves to have a higher ranking position after her success in the primaries.

Katiec Pekin, IL   November 18th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

I really would like to see Hillary on the Supreme Court, as we
desperately need someone who will support womens issues
and middle class America.
She would be a good Secretary of State, but, risk sounding like
a sexist when I say I would like to see a man in that position
because of the countries we have to deal with and their lack
of respect and recognition of women. Think a man would
carry more weight on decisions, discussions etc.

Paul S. Columbia, SC   November 18th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Hillary Clinton should be selected to pilot the next shuttle to Pluto. Bill can be the co-pilot and Pelosi, Reid, Frank, Dodd, and Schumer can crew. I’ll chip in for gas.

Ron K   November 18th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Hi Jack

US Attorney General !! I think she would excel in that job.

Ron San Diego

David from Social Circle GA.   November 18th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

I prefer her as the leader of the senate, but she would be better served as secretary of state to further human rights for women around the world as well as build her foreign relations credentials for a 2016 run and win at the White house. Let’s face it, the President after President Obama is going to be a woman and Hillary is a way better choice than Sarah Palin.

lee in tn   November 18th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

Really can’t say. Only Mr. Obama knows where and how she will fit into the cabinet.

Marie Canada   November 18th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

Putting Hillary in as Secretary of State will obviously be great for foreign relations. We all know how the Arab countries like having women in positions of power.

Ed from Durango, Colorado   November 18th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

There is no proper role. She should stay in the senate. The Clintons carry too much baggage and there are already too many clintonistas in Obama’s circle.

leroy from houston   November 18th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

The proper role would be either Attorney General or Supreme Court Justice…Bill’s dealings with the foreign countries donating to his foundation would create a conflict of interest for Hillary to become Secretary of State…She has played the “dutiful” Democrat and deserves to be rewarded…

Kevin, Chester Springs PA   November 18th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Secretary of State. Keeps her and Bill out of the country.

LUCY- ILLINOIS   November 18th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Hillery would be best as Secretary of state or elected as head of the Senate. She is very intelligent and I’m sure President Elect Obama will use her in the place that she would do the most good.

I. B., Rocky Mount, North Carolina   November 18th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Hillary Clinton will make an outstanding ambassador to Bosnia and the world as Secretary of State in a President Obama administration.

carson   November 18th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

JACK, they all will be awesome if worked together and no repub will not able to replace anymore for atleast 8 years ….

Marieth, Chicago   November 18th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

I trust President-Elect Obama’s decision. I thought change would be something else, but the change does come from the top. I have complete confidence in his judgement.

Sarah   November 18th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

If managed properly she will be a great Secretary of State. She is very intelligent and she has a lot of experience but, as we saw during the primaries, there could be a problem with her viewpoints on some issues because they differ greatly from Barack’s. If these differences aren’t resolved she could cause a lot of headaches for Barack.

Terry from North Carolina   November 18th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Jack
She would be a good addition to the cabinet, under the following conditions. Her husband minds his own business, and she knows who her boss is. Other wise she will be a loose cannon.

cyril andrews   November 18th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Jack,

S.O.S. is the ideal position as it would guarantee the President a full nights sleep. He would be able to put his phone on call forward to Hiliary for those 3:00am calls.

London, Ontario,Canada.

Mike S.,New Orleans   November 18th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Secretary of Pant Suits? Jack, is this a trick question?

Annie, Atlanta   November 18th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

As much as I’d love to see her in a cabinet position, I think she could do so much more right where she is.

Howard M. Bolingbrook IL   November 18th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Jack, I guess, I understand that President Elect Obama wants to give HRC a job in his administration, but there is no way she is more qualified or deserving than John Kerry for the job of SoS.

I read a great deal of Mrs. Clinton schedule while she was First Lady. For the most part she attended luncheons and tea parties. She wasn’t involved in hard line foreign politics.

Pat in Hampstead, Maryland   November 18th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Jack – I think Hillary should be the Secretary of Health and Education which should only be 1 person for both. This way she can take her passion for Health Care and Education and make it a reality under Obama. I think Secretary of State should be John Kerry who would be taken more seriously by Nation States such as Russia and China, both Countries that are not high on women rights.

Matt from Stafford, VA   November 18th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

Hillary deserves whatever Obama wants to give her. Be that Secretary of State or head janitor. He’s the President Elect, and should not be obligated to give anyone anything. He will pick the best man, or woman, for the job.

Chad N., Fresno California   November 18th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

Clintons role in the Obama administration is entirely up to Obama. She does not “deserve” a role, she is not “entitled” to a role but she could potentialy perform well in several positions. So could many other people as well though. That being said if Obama decides to use Hillary Clinton in his administration, wherever she ends up is precisely the proper role for her assuming that she is offered a role in the Obama administration at all. Remember, just because your already a part of the “club” doesnt mean that only those people already a part of the club are the only ones that can or should be considered.

Annie - Virginia   November 18th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

I truly believe that Hillary would be the BEST choice for Secretary of State at this time in our history. But I also believe that president elect Obama will select and make the best choices for his cabinet, that is why I voted for him.

roger dowdle lockhart, tx   November 18th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

SOS is fine, as long as she realizes she will be serving at the presidents pleasure, and if she goes off message she can be replaced overnight! And let her know ahead of time that if Bill becomes an embarrassment, she will be replaced. As the next campaign nears, she can be sent overseas to talk with other nations and keep her from campaigning against Obama.

Anthony   November 18th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Why may Bill Clinton’s extra-political financial history stop Hillary from serving as Secretary of State when it wouldn’t have stopped her from becoming President of the United States? Is this a “fake reason” made up by Obama so he can give the position to Bill Richardson or is it a reason the Clintons made up so that they could politely refuse?

Venia PA   November 18th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Barack’s judgement has proven to be brilliant so far so although I don’t understand all the ramifications of having Hillary as SOS, I know Barack does and I trust him implicitely.

Debora I from Nauvoo, IL   November 18th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

Hill and Bill are old fashioned politicians who should have no place in the new Obama administration. The only exception might be the old cliche that you should keep your enemies close, and your “friends” closer. These people tried to use his race against him and they gave the McCain campaign the best of the ammunition used against him. Let Hilllary rule the Senate–close but far enough away.

Barbara in Las Vegas, NV   November 18th, 2008 2:18 pm ET

Perhaps Secretary of Health and Human Services, since she failed with getting health care reform when Bill was Pres. I think though that the Secretary of State spot should be reserved for someone whose “foreign policy” experience consists of more than First Lady jaunts and meetings and dodging sniper fire in unfriendly places.

Michael "C" Lorton, Virginia   November 18th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

Jack: You have got to be kidding with your question!! None. Obama must realize that a little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal.

Jack in DC   November 18th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

Jack,
It seems like democrats are going to great lengths to show that they are above petty politics…..but at what cost? Hillary basically ridiculed Obama’s main foreign policy position of diplomacy as naive and dangerous, yet he’s willing to have her execute this same plan she publicly ridiculed only a few months ago. Mr. President-elect may have noble intentions but this is not the political era of Lincoln. This only guarantees that it will take a long time for the Obama administration to accomplish anything as they will have to come to a consensus between this team of different strong-willed personalities first before even going to congress.

Then comes Joe Lieberman. And the democrats wonder why the are seen as soft on defense.

Karl from SF, CA   November 18th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

I would love to see her as Attorney General and looking into the Bush years with the use of Independent Investigators, not political appointees. She is the only one I know who would go after them with the fortitude needed to expose their lawless ways and bring them to justice.

JIM   November 18th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

My buddy Jack Cafferty: Hillary would be the best qualified candidate for Secretary of State. I don’t believe Obama nominate her for any position. There is still animosity between the Clintons and Obamas. The Clintons are still upset that Florida and Michigan votes didn’t count in the primaries. If they counted, she would have been the nominee.

Jim, Kansas   November 18th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

I think Obama should appoint Hillary to be his Attorney General and
leave her there until a vacancy appears on the Supreme Court. This
way she would be making good use of her law degree.

Ralph, Corpus Christi   November 18th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

Special assistant to Bill Clinton.

Len of Colfax   November 18th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

I am not sure that there is now a “winning” answer to this question.
If she stays in the Senate because she is not offered a high profile position, there will be criticism about not giving her a top spot (unless she publicly declines any high profile position). If she is put into a high profile position (such as Secretary of State), there will undoubtedly be conflicts based on Pres. Clinton. I think the best answer would have been to keep her name out of the lime light until a decision was actually made.

Robert of Lake Jackson, Texas   November 18th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

Hillary has come a long way since her days as First Lady, and I couldn’t be more proud of her. Should she choose to take on the roll of Sec. of State, I’m all for it. I think she’ll make the best choice.

Sara   November 18th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

I think it is the worst choice, Obama can ever make. What Obama and Hillary have in common regarding foreign policy? She voted for Iraq invasion and Obama opposed it. She does not believe in diplomacy when it concerns ” enemies ” and Obama thinks it is wise to do that. She is as warmonger as Republicans. And above all that she hates and despises Obama. I think if Hillary gets that important position, millions who voted for Obama instead of Hillary, would be very disappointed and with a good reason. And as I read it somewhere, don’t hire someone you can’t fire, and that is what Obama whould have to live with if he goes on and makes her the Secretary of State.

Matt from Albuquerque   November 18th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

I think that the best place for Hillary, other than in the US Senate, would be as Ambassador to the UN. A SoS position may be in her future, but she needs more time honing her diplomatic skills first if she wants to be the SoS.

Patrick   November 18th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

I think the way she dealt with her husband and the Monica Lewinsky Scandal proved that she can handle herself appropriately as Sec State. Who else has gone through that kind of trial and come out standing strong like she did.
Tikrit, Iraq

Lynn, Boise ID   November 18th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

I have been telling people for months that I think she would make a wonderful Secretary of State and am thrilled that she is being considered. It is the perfect job for her.

Billy G in Las Vegas   November 18th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

she needs to stay in the Senate and help Teddy Kennedy fight for universal healthcare. IF she ends up anywhere in the new administration, you can say goodby to the “No Drama Obama” new way of conducting business in Washington.

LisaL - Canada   November 18th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

Define “proper”. A few months ago a lot of people thought the “proper” role for her was on the democratic ticket for VP.

DID it ever occur to anyone that one of the reasons she may not have been the VP pick was to keep her available for a “more proper” role ??

The issue of Bill dragging down her chances of playing an important role in the new administration is a bunch of garbage.

There are too many skeptics out there. Hillary is a smart, capable politician. The “proper” role for her could be one of many – she will end up where she ends up, and probably do a remarkable job.

Jasmine in Germany   November 18th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

As far as I’m concerned Jack, she can shine his shoes.

odessa   November 18th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

hillary would fit the supreme court because she can keep the right-wingers in check (meaning scalia, thomas, roberts etc)..i can’t see her as secretary of state but whatever happens maybe it will do some good..obama will have to keep a close eye on her so she won’t screw up like the bosnia epsiode..

Maggie Muggins From Selwyn   November 18th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Hillary should be in charge of health care but not for lower premiums but for free universal health care like all other modern societies currently enjoy.

Providing everyone in your country the equal opportunity of living as healthy and as long a life as possible should be considered an essential service for any government to provide to it’s citizens.

L.M.,Arizona   November 18th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

She has the toughness, the neigoiate skills, and experience to close deals as a presidential cabinet member. Compared to Rice who is a photo op specialst and nothing else.

L.M.,Arizona

F LEE Birmingham   November 18th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

JACK i feel she will be a hard worker and team player 4 the people,LET’S SEE.

Joe in VA   November 18th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Ambassador to Mongolia! Seriously, though she’s never been a favorite of mine, she is quite capable and is widely known. Sec of State may be a good fit. Her passion has been health care, maybe she should stay in the senate push that issue. My vote – senate or state – pick one.

Chatham, VA

Ann, Newton, New Jersey   November 18th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

I would love to see her take Pelosi’s job. She is not doing this country any justice. She should go back home and bake cookies with her grandchildren and take Harry Reid with her.

Tom - Las Vegas, Nevada   November 18th, 2008 2:33 pm ET

That would be for President-elect Obama to decide. He was the one who garnered the support of a majority of Americans that cast ballots and he is the one responsible for his choices.

Karen - Nashville   November 18th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

I’d be happy with either Bill Richardson or Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, but Hillary has her old loose cannonball-and-chain, not to mention a few other tarnishes. What about the circumstances surrounding Vincent Foster’s death, Whitewater, and “Filegate”? Maybe she should stick to the senate.

Anthony Smith   November 18th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Considering she will undo some of the hate and animosity from foreign countries towards us at the hands of George Bush, I think she would make an excellent Secretary of State. If the conflicts with Bill are too numerous, I suggest a new cabinet position; Secretary of slashing. She could start by ending the earmarks, no bid contracts, corporate payoffs, stop the bailouts, cut endless pocket programs and departments like NASA, IRS, and Homeland Security. And the Department of Energy, how is that one working out?

Wildwood Crest, NJ

mac from traverse city Michigan   November 18th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

I think Sen Clinton should reach a consesus with President Obama on the important issues they both campaigned on and then stay in the senate to lead the fight for those issues. With the power of the president behind her she would be more powerful than Harry Reid or any of the chairmen of the various senate committee’s, truly the lioness of the senate. She would be able to gain credit for accomplishing some of what she believes in and she would be able to build the historic legacy she covets for years to come. Seriously will anybody remember Condoleeza Rice eight years from now? Who was Secretary of State eight years ago?

Brian from Fort Mill, SC   November 18th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

Actually, I’d like to see her work on the Universal Health Care initiative.

Ginger H -- West Melbourne, FL   November 18th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

Although I’m sure she would make a fantastic Secretary of State, I thought way back in President Bill Clinton’s time that she should be Secretary of Health and Human Services. We need her in a major role in Obama’s administration, and wherever they decide she needs to be, I hope she accepts the position.

Diane Dagenais Turbide   November 18th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

Dear Jack,

only two people know the place for Hillary Clinton in the current administration!

Barack and Hillary!

karen-phoenix   November 18th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Secretary of State — she would be brilliant and you get two for one. Great to recapture the good old American image–might be better than it was before Bush screwed us up!!! She could also be head of the Health Dept and get her health plan through!!! Barack is a very, very smart man and I do believe the Clintons and Obamas and Bidens are all becoming friends which is great for the American middle class–all came out of hard working middle class families!!!

Michael from Greenfield, Wi.   November 18th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

I believe that she would be very good at State, but if she doesn’t get it then the next Supreme Court opening would be a good bet. She is qualified for the appointment.

Robert Wendel   November 18th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

With Sen. Ted Kennedy’s days in the Senate are sadly numbered, Hilary’s place in history could best be as his replacement voice for the little guy.

Joy Middleton-Taylor   November 18th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

I have concerns with Senator Clinton serving in the position of Secretary of State. While she may be well qualified in exposure and intellect; she exhibited character during the primary that causes concern for her true support of this President (elect). After all, it is our character that steers the use of our intelligence.

Joe, Yankee Lake, N.Y.   November 18th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

Absolutely none. Obama campaigned against Clinton and accepted millions in donations from people who were against Clinton. This is not Change we can Beleive in. This is no more than a political payback to the Clintons. Too bad he was not as loyal to his supporters. He should be ashamed of himself. Why didn’t he talk like this before the election, he would never gotten my vote. I feel cheated.

lynnej   November 18th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

Senator Clinton is an excellent candidate for the job. But I can see that after several years of a tainted administration by the current occupant and some by the previous three before this one, President-Elect Obama is looking for a drama-free work enviroment.

Given the media circus that she and her husband attract, I think she should step aside and let Governor Bill Richardson have a go at it. Besides, We, The People, need her ferocity and common sense in the Senate to get that universal healthcare that we all need.

John   November 18th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

Jack: I believe Hillary Clinton would make an excellent choice to be Secretary of State, but if this is not going to happen then she would be an outstanding advisor. There are many who love Hillary, and many who do not care for her. It seems that both friend and enemy want her to be Secretary of State or maybe Ambassador to the U.N. for the USA.
What ever the Obama Administration uses her for in the near future she will do an excellent job.

John
Alabama

jeh15   November 18th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Sorry, but I don’t think that Senator Clinton should serve any role in the incoming Obama administration. If the GOP praise the likelihood of such a choice, you can be sure they would dearly love to put Bill back in the center of it. Unless the GOP want to bury the hatchet of what they tried to do over a decade before, only then would I agree that Clinton could and should be Sec of State. Or assume any other cabinet post she desires.

Lesley, Lighthouse Point   November 18th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Jack, I would like to know this. If Hilary Clinton was considered to be a strong candidate for the Presidency and no one was questioning Bill Clinton’s international activities during the primary, then why would they question that now? I find it very suspicious that people believe that their is a problem with this, yet never mentioned it during her run for the Whilte House. Seems suspect.

Louis, Los Angeles   November 18th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Jack,
Love her or hate her, it’s up to President-elect Obama to make that call. After all, we trusted Barack Obama enough to elect him to the highest office in the land. Obama will make an educated choice that will take this country in a new direction away from the ineffectiveness of the current out-going administration.

Tom, Tucson, AZ   November 18th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

I would think Sec. of Health and Human Services would be the ideal place for her. Senator Clinton has always made healthcare one of her top issues yet she doesn’t have the seniority in the Senate to take any real leadership position. Senator Kennedy has made it clear he will take the lead on this.
It may not be as sexy as the Sec. of State position, but with an annual budget of over $700 billion a year it is certainly influential and effects millions of Americans in a very personal way.

g ontario   November 18th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Hummer Girl   November 18th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Advisor Only!! Bill has too many hands in Foreign cookie jars for the Clintons to be objective and not a liability to Obama. She is an excellent Politician, but an Achilles Heel to the Obama camp because of her Husband.

Dave in Saint Louis   November 18th, 2008 2:47 pm ET

Since she got more votes I would say President!

arlene rannfeldt   November 18th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

i think hillary would be an asset to the obama administration no matter what position he gives her. she is capeable and creative, the kind of person he needs to have on his team to make the changes this country needs.go hillary..go barack..

Lenore in Kansas   November 18th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

I am disappointed that she is probably going to be Secretary of State. Maybe I don’t understand politics but it was only a few months ago that she (along with Joe Leiberman!) was a very vicious rival of Obama and I think that is a serious flaw. Also, I haven’t forgotten her support of the Iraq war back when it really mattered– when it began.
I think there are others who are qualified to be Sec. of State.

This isn’t about “unity” at all. It’s about something else. What? I don’t get it. I’d be much happier with another choice.

Also am disgusted that Leiberman has kept all his perks despite his blatant disloyalty. Is this CHANGE?

Terry in Hanover County   November 18th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

I’d rather see Senator Clinton appointed to the Supreme Court, but, if President-elect Obama makes her Secretary of State, I think she’d do a good job. Besides, there are no openings on the Court at the moment. He can always appoint her to that position later.

Bruce St Paul MN   November 18th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Junior Senator from New York.

C in Belen, New Mexico   November 18th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Sen. Clinton can and should serve at what ever position President elect Obama decides she can best serve the country. I agree that Bill Clinton and his various “concerns”, financial and international, should be closely vetted to prevent and conflicts of interest, real OR perceived.

Larry from Georgetown, Texas   November 18th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

I have to bite my tongue to say this but to me she would be a better Sec. of State than Richardson. Or she could be put in charge of pant-suit sales for the country to raise money for spiraling health care costs.

John, Fort Collins, CO   November 18th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

Since Bill would likely be part of any the deal with Hillary, Secretary of State is the best fit. They are smart, have broad international experience, and are exceptionally adept at blending fact and fiction to their advantage. Who better to go jaw to jaw with the Putins of the world.

Barb @ the Beach   November 18th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

I think Hillary would be an excellent Supreme Court Justice.

Paulette,Dallas,PA   November 18th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

Hillary Clinton would make an excellent Secretary of State. She is experienced and knowledgeable in foreign affairs and I believe Bill would be an asset too. The world loves Bill Clinton.

Brent from Oklahoma   November 18th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

Jack, I think Hillary would make a great Vice-President! Oh, that wasn’t the question. I think Hillary would make a great SOS, but I feel she would serve us better staying in the Senate. She could stay in the Senate and then try for another run at President after Obama’s term/s are over.

Michael and Diane Phoenix AZ   November 18th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

She might be great for the Health and Human Services position considering her desire for universal health care for this country.

Tina (Ft Worth)   November 18th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

Oh why not? I would much rather to have her out in the most dangerous places in the world than having her in trying to derail my policies.

Mike, Syracuse NY   November 18th, 2008 2:52 pm ET

President.

Doris - Pgh.PA   November 18th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Once again, Mr. Obama is a’ better man’ than I am by offering Hillary a
job in his administration. She is very talented and I know she would do a good job. She would be ‘on stage’ in the world events but Mr. Obama will be the President and with his authority will be able to keep her focused by making his intentions known. I am confident in Mr. Obama’s abilities to keep many balls in the air and multitask successfully.

Dave Linker   November 18th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Mike in UT   November 18th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

She should stay as a Senator from the State of New York. President Clinton has way too much baggage (both legal and illegal), some of which Hillary is alleged to have been involved in.

From Hill & Bill’s point of view, Sec of State gives her a path to the presidency, 2012, no waiting around for 2016.

The domestic situation is daunting: economy, energy, immigration, health care, education.

No way can Obama succeed in all areas in 2 1/2 years, which is when the campaign for 2012 begins in earnest.

As Sec of State, Hillary can score some victories overseas, and remain unscathed by inevitable failures on the domestic front.

If Obama begins to flounder, she can distance herself from his administration even as she uses her Secretary of State appointment to burnish her own image.

She can blame any failures on Obama’s policies, resign on principle, and begin her next run for the presidency.

Steve   November 18th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

I think its important that someone’s past can warn people of their future, but it should not be the deciding factor. With an Obama administration, I’m hopeful that it will create a more honest and open environment for others in his cabinet. That said Hillary Clinton should be given a chance just like anyone else, including Obama, until they start making bad decisions and collecting “bad points” that will create unease with the American people. Id hate to think the bad decisions in my past would dictate my future and the better direction that its going.

John in Rohnert Park   November 18th, 2008 2:59 pm ET

Actually, I like her but feel that Bill Richardson or Collin Powell have better credentials and would be better Secretary’s of State. I actually thought she was the better choice for VP. However, I’m really souring on Bill who is the second half of the Clinton “package deal”. I used to like Bill but he’s really become a negative on too many levels. I do hope she is still part of the team.

Walter, Ontario   November 18th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

The best place for her would be Health Care Reform. Bringing Health Care to all Americans would give her and women a place in history. Any type of baggage she would have wouldn’t matter. You have to admit, whatever negatives she had, she put up a pretty good fight. We won’t see a woman with spunk like that for long time.

Larry from Georgetown, Texas   November 18th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

If she’s not willing to be Ambassador to Bosnia, then I guess Sec. of State would work as well.

Sandra fromTexas   November 18th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

I think Secretary of State may very well be the best place for her as far as a President Obama is concerned. I don’t think they want her in the Senate making waves if they are going to try to push through a health care program. Senator Kennedy will probably be on the front line for a heath care program, as he should. She did make a mess the last time she was involved in a health care program. This way she is kept out of the domestic agenda and at the same time follows orders on the foreign agenda. Perfect.

Rose in Az   November 18th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

I think she should stay in the Senate, I am not sure that she could accept orders from Obama, she likes to be her own boss, I think there would be personality conflicts and of course Bill will put his two cents in. if Obama nominates her for sos then we will have Mr. and Mrs. sos.

Shannon Wadding, St. Paul, MN   November 18th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

Hilary’s proper role is to stay out of Obama’s way. Hilary needs to wait her turn after she threw everything but the kitchen sink at Obama during the primary.

Obama needs to remember his political platform of change, in which case Bilary Clinton will restabish the old boy network.

gail Centre, Al.   November 18th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

I hope she is not in his cabinet, It would hurt her from campaigning in 2012, maybe that’s why he wants her in the mix, to keep her close.

Diane/Allentown, PA   November 18th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Jack, Obama doesn’t owe Hillary Clinton anything.

This sense of entitlement didn’t work the first time, did it?

Although I would like to see her in Nancy Pelosi’s place, or Harry Reid, either one is fine with me.

Mike   November 18th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

She should remain a senator and keep an eye on Bill Clinton (J/K) . . .
She will do great as the Secretary of State in my opinion. I love it! Go Obama!

Chris From Houston   November 18th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

I voted for Obama but I think it would be great ! We would get two Clintons for the price of one…

As for a potential conflict of interest with Bill: how can anyone bring that up after a beloved (sic) US Vice-President went from CEO of a large oil-service company, then proceeded to secretly meet with his oil buddies, bring the price of oil to an all time-high, crashed the economy along the way and proceeded with the biggest bank robbery of all time (700 billions) to his wall street croonies… GIVE ME A BREAK !

Greg in Cabot AR   November 18th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Nominate her as Supreme Court Justice when there is an opening. She would be great in that position and she could avoid the primary elections in 4 years. It would be a fitting career that would serve all Americans well past the next election cycle

John in Arizona   November 18th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Obviously naming Hillary as Secretary of State would necessarily include Bill in the pocket, and the portfolio of those two in the position would be a bold move by Obama, withglobal benefits that far outweigh any potential pitfalls.

Kay in WV   November 18th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Are people ever going to get over their reactionary hatred of Hillary and actually consider the experience that she brings to the table?

If there were a way for her to become part of the SEnate Democratic Leadership I would like to see her stay there so she can work on a broad range of issues. But, as that seems to be unlikely Secretary of State would be a very nice fit for her. Her strength and tenacity would serve the country well in dealings with Russia, N. Korea, China, Israel, Palestine, Iran, etc.

JW Georgia   November 18th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

In my opinion Clinton has no place in the Obama administration beyond supportive Democratic Senator for the state of N.Y. If I had known that Clinton was going to cackle her way back into a higher level of authority I would have voted Nader.

Gary - Woodhaven, Michigan   November 18th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

She should become Secretary of State where her first act is to have her husband park himself on the West Bank and not leave until there is a just and lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis both of whom he has the respect of.

David,San Bernardino,CA.   November 18th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

I believe that Hillary would best serve the Obama administration by being a leader in the Senate and pushing through Obama’s agenda and Bill Clinton should be Secretary of State or ambassador to the United Nations. Boy,would that impress the rest of the world.

Curt W   November 18th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Any role she wants and he should pay off her debt. He wouldn’t be where he is without her.

Janice Pound   November 18th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

If Obama wishes to use her I think she would do much better starting and constructing a universaL HEALTH CARE PROGRAM.

Michael   November 18th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

I think she would make an excellent secretary. (forgetting about her time in the senate, looking at the production from that assembly, it is quite clear that every one involved in that exclusive club have done next to nothing in helping out this real citizens of this great country.) She was a house wife for most of the time her husband held public office, would not that be the next logical step up.

HIllary has the intellectual capacity, wisdom, and savvy to do any job.
The problem of Bill remains. I don’t think Secretary of State. With his getting money from all over the world, who knows what favors he may delve into. Too bad he keeps holding her back.
She already said she doesn’t want to be on the Supreme Court, too tame a job..
Secretary of Defense ( she is a Hawk at heart).
Chair of the Democratic Party is open now that Dean has left?

I always thought she’d make an excellent advocate for universal healthcare. This is a life-long dream of Hillary’s and I think she would accept a position where she could make healthcare universal a reality for all americans!

Beth Z.   November 18th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Hillary deffinitally can not go back to the senate. she did an awesome job but her efforts to reform the country are now being blocked by senior members. the senate is no longer the place for her. i think that she would be a great asset to the Obama administration at every level, but as sos… thats up to her and Obama.

Debbie, Illinois   November 18th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

Hillary for Secretary of State and Bill for Supreme Court Justice.

ForestHenry   November 18th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

Mr. Obama’s nomination of Senator Clinton is a long term strategic plan for his campaign for re-election in 2012. Senator Clinton would be wise to remain in the Senate, and do the work her constituents elected her to do for both her state and the nation. Senator Clinton will emerge as a stronger candidate for the Presidency in 2012 should the Democrats be in a postion that could be rather bleak for their party.

kenneth sibbett   November 18th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

The only thing that Hilary Clinton should be doing for Barack Obama is do what she told Barack to do when he got to the Senate.

The real challenge for a Secretary of State Clinton will be remaining in that role and not overstepping her bounds. Keeping your friends close and your enemies closer is one thing, but Obama would need to make sure Hillary is keeping busy in the State Department and not the Oval Office.

Nancy, Tennessee   November 18th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

Hillary is not looking for a handout. Hillary Clinton is a respected Senator from the state of New York. If President-Elect Barack Obama feels Hillary can better serve this nation in another position, then he should offer it to her. She can then decide to take the position or remain loyal to the voters of New York who want her to be their Senator. Hillary is not going away. Her life has been devoted to public service and the commitment to the people runs deep in her veins. Secretary of State is a good choice, but Hillary is capable of doing a good job with whatever she tackles.

Jay in Texas   November 18th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

I think President-elect Obama should appoint Hillary Clinton to a cabinet position where he feels she would be best suited. I believe Congressman Dennis Kucinich of Ohio would make the best choice for Secretary of State. Despite not being allowed to participate in the last debates of the Democratic Primaries, Kucinich still came out and endorsed Obama after his nomination when endorsing Ralph Nader would have been much more in line with Kucinich’s beliefs.

Forget Hillary, I want to see Bill back in the government. Give him some hilarious position like Ambassador to Sweden, and then sit back and watch the hours of entertainment roll by. Now that we’ve actually got an intelligent person running the country, the mainstream media will need someone like Bill Clinton who can make daily gaffes.

Steve Peach - Indiana   November 18th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

Even though she is probably the most capable person for ANY of the Cabinet positions available, she should NOT be a part of President-Elect Obama’s administration. The Clinton’s bring a lot of baggage to the table, and Obama sold me and others on “Change We Can Believe In”. He needs to start fresh, but ALWAYS ask for Hillary’s counsel on many of the major issues that he will be faced with. She is wise and can be helpful, especially with our overseas allies. Her baggage will only bring Obama’s plans down, get Sen. Lugar or Gov. Richardson as your Sec. of State. Let Hillary be Sen. or someday Gov. of New York.

R. Harrison, Griffin GA   November 18th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

I trust PE Obama’s judgement emphatically. He chose the right people to run his campaign and they did an excellent job. I think he is intelligent enough to choose the right people for his Administration. Let’s trust his judgement. Plus, I like the fact that he is reaching across the aisle in populating his Administration.

Ken M . Millington MI   November 18th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

Hello Jack. Well i’m sort of confused by all the speculation on what cabinet post she will wind up with. I thought that Pres Elect Obama ran against status quo. The clintons are the definition of Status quo! you only need to look at all the republicans supporting the appointment to prove it. Also what about Bill and all his connections around the world SOMETHING SMELLS FISHY. But its his administration hope he doesn’t loose his support before he starts or he’ll have a short stay at the white house.

Bodo, Ann Arbor   November 18th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

Like it or not, the Clinton establishment must be brought into Obama’s government to provide it with stability. They carry far too much weight to remain outsiders. Otherwise Obama will suffer the fate of Jimmy Carter who was brought down after only 4 years — not by the opposition but by his own party insiders.

And what a resume to be part of the team that puts America back on the right track…

She did all she could for him and no one can deny that Jack, not even you. I’m really tired of all this Bill vetting too Bill is not asking , nor does he want the job. Hillary has earned her own way and deserves to be judged on her own merits. This is discrimination against her. Pick her or don’t ! Will K from San Jose   November 18th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

The proper thing for Obama to do was offer her a high powered role like Secretary of State, and let that offer leak so that we all knew it was on the table.

The right career move for Clinton is obviously to stay in the Senate, so her polite refusal will allow Obama to choose whomever he wants while making this acknowledgment of Clinton to her supporters.

jim Toronto   November 18th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

Obama is a smart guy, So I expect he will offer the right role within his administration for Clinton. She is just as smart and should except whatever role is offered as I’m sure it will be a very key position.
The country needs both, Obama and Clinton as well as all of the brain power they can surround themselves with, to make America a great country again and undo the tarnished image of the last eight years.

Hillary could be the greatest Secretary of State in our time. As a junior Senator her impact is diluted and her strengths are under appreciated. The other possible candidates that have been mentioned thus far leave me cold.

James Lomax   November 18th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

Yes. That way Obama can keep an eye on Clinton’s dealings. She won’t be able to point the finger at Obama’s administration for doing something wrong if she is part of it.

Ed Jones   November 18th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

Hey Jack. I believe Hillary is much needed in the position she now serves. Obama needs strong backing in both the House and Senate if he is expected to do so much in so little time.If things go well in his first four years, bring Hillary in during the second four and position her to make a run at the Whitehouse in 2016.

Marcus Johnson   November 18th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

I think Sen. Clinton would and hopefully will make a great secretary of state. I was thinking that she should be President-elect Obama’s secretary of state before the election was even over. So good luck to her!

barbara   November 18th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

Hilliary, would serve capably, and most noteworthy honorably in any cabinet position. She of course would be outstanding as Secretary of State. As a well known leader of the US, she would reinstate respect from the world which we have totally lost in the last 8 years. Is this not the same leader who said in 1998 we need health care reform…….well in 2008 the people of America are realizing, it might have been a good idea, now its a mandatory idea.
We need leaders with vision, courage, honor and how novel intelligence! Barbara, Canton, Ohio

Debbie in San Marcos, CA   November 18th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

I think Hillary would make a great sec. of state! I voted for Obama because he is smart and has good judgement,…why should I question appointments he makes? Let’s let him do his work and see where it takes us before we start trashing everything he does. I trust him, after all, its hard to imagine anyone could do worse by this country than Bush.

John in Santa Barbara, CA   November 18th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Has anyone asked Hillary what she would like to do. Was there a deal cut between her and Obama for her support during the election? I don’t think any of us have a real clear picture of what is really going on between the two. Right now it’s alot of showboating, but where is all of this going to really end up?

Vera, Baltimore   November 18th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

From my vantage point, she shouldn’t have a role. She should stay in the senate and help get Obama’s legislation passed. If she becomes secretary of state, she will need someone to actually manage the state department better than she managed her campaign. But I’m sure Obama knows about some great talent she has that is not apparent to me.

ANGIE IN PA   November 18th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

Jack,
I dont think Hillary should be SOS,I would like to see Chuck Hagel get that Job, and Hillary be supreme court Justice.

Susan in Maine   November 18th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Why such discussion or such obsessive fear about Hillary as Obamas pick! Hillary has amazing experience and education in the feild. If she happens to get support from Bill through his experience so be it…we are all better off.

mitchell ,arkansaw   November 18th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

it’s ok by me. her 18 million supporters will be needed to make ‘change’ happen. she worked hard to get barack elected after a bitter primary. she earned a spot.

Joan (Canada)   November 18th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

I would like to see Hillary and Bill retire., adored both of them at one time but during the primaries they showed another side. However, I do trust Barack Obama and his good judgement.

David   November 18th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Jack,
I can’t see it either way, why would she want to work for him . And why would he want her to work in his adim? He don’t need the drama if I’m him I would just say NO!

Molita in Austin, TX   November 18th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

Hillary will be an integral part of the new administration but does it really matter? This country is a part of the global “New World Order” and I doubt any real “change” is going to happen except as a facade.

Bob D, Morristown, NJ   November 18th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

The proper role for Hillary Clinton is any role she and Barrack Obama can agree to. She was deemed qualified to be President by almost half the Democrats who voted in the primaries. Surely she is qualified for any other role in government.

As far as Bill Clinton is concerned. There isn’t the hint of any of his activity being illegal, or even unethical. I am unaware of conflict of interest concerns extending to one’s spouse, but in the eight years she has been a senator I am unaware of any alleged conflicts of interest between Hillary and Bill’s activities, so I don’t see why there should be any for her possible responsibilities as Secretary of State, or any other administration position.

carol, from pittsburgh   November 18th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Whatever President-elect Obama feels would be appropriate to advance his ideas in his administration. He’s a smart guy and she’s smart and feisty. If he thinks she’d be a good fit, he should offer it to her. It’s his call.

AJ Humes   November 18th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Absolutely. Everyone is going to doubt Barack’s ability, so he should build the “dream team” and not even leave the door open for these criticisms. Obama, Biden, Clinton? I don’t think we will have anymore Iraq-like debacles. Need I say more?

OBDAG in Appleton, WI   November 18th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

I see clinton filling two possible roles in the Obama administration. I think she could be a very good Secretary of State. Another position she might also dowell in is as the Attorney General. I have not heard any comments about the second position but I think she would do a better job than those in the Bush administration, For some unknown reason I get the feeling we could trust Ckinton to call a spade a spade and we wouldn’t have to worry about illegal wire- taps. My belief is that if she felt something wasn’t right she’d say so loud and clear. If nothing else this will keep us all guessing for a bit longer, as is the case with each change in presidents. She could always still remain in the Senate, if she so desires – we’ll see.

Praetorian, Fort Myers   November 18th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

A good Senator trying to exhort her colleagues.

No place for her in the Executive Branch.

matarr sillah   November 18th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Jack,
Hillary is well liked in and outside of our borders. The 18 million that voted for her during the democratic primary is a testimony to this. She will be welcomed in most embassies around the world and can help repair America’s badly damaged reputation worldwide. Mr Obama will have his hands full with the Economy so why not offer the job of America’s top diplomat to someone that is well liked and respected by other nations…Secretary of State is the perfect job for Hillary and I have no doubt that she will perform brilliantly in that capacity.

Jenny from Nanuet, New York   November 18th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

She should remain in the Senate and prove Bill meant it when he said neither he nor Hillary campaigned for Obama hoping she’d get a position in his cabinet in exchange.

Angie-OHIO   November 18th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

She would make a great Secretary of State. She is known around the world and she is very, very intelligent and very determined.

just me   November 18th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

the thought of Bill being involved again is spooky. Let Hillary be in charge of health care reform, appoint Richardson or Kerry secretary of state.

Myra Becnel   November 18th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

First of all, I do not understand why the money Bill Clinton raises around the world cause a serious conflict to her becoming Secretary of State but would not have been a conflict of interest had she been nominated and won the Presidency? Please, can someone explain this?

Tom Pa   November 18th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

There has to be a better choice one would think. How about Colin Powell to stop the non bi-partisan bickering. ? Hillary could do a great job, Powell would be better (slower to anger).

Jessie Col, Ga   November 18th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

Hillary should replace the Marine at the door holding it open on PE Obama arrival and departure as the Secretary of the Doorknob. Very intelligent position and something Bill can’t mess up.

Shirley -AK OHIO   November 18th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Secretary of State. Obama is a brillant man, which is why he ran. Hillary won’t run against him in 2012, he will win a second term. In 2016, Hillary will run for President and will become the first woman president. So in this situation everyone wins, except for Palin she gets a double smack down for 2012 and 2016, that will teach her for saying Obama pals around with terrorist.

F Machado - Connecticut   November 18th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Secretary of State.
I think Obama made a smart decision for not picking Hillary to be the vice-president. It would be a waste for such a talent like Hillary be in a VP position.

Micah Miller of Canton OH   November 18th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Hillary would make a perfect Secretary of State, though I would hope Bill keeps his distance. Let Hillary be Hillary and we’ll be three steps closer to the image our nation once had…

Ian, Minneapolis, MN   November 18th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

I say, supreme court justice. BUT, only if it’s a fair and balanced supreme court. Not just left wing radicals.

Mark Schaffer   November 18th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

She is eminently qualified to be the Secretary of State because she can see the UN from her Manhattan apartment. Hillary should take the job. What fun!

W Couch   November 18th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Stay in the Senate. She’ll be far better off running in 2012 from the Senate than she would be as a failed cabinet member. Additionally, she’ll be able to pay off the debt she incurred in her bid for the White House.

Yvone   November 18th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

NONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dicky Neely   November 18th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Hi Jack,
I think the best role for Hillary Clinton would be as Senate Majority leader. Harry Reid should go. Nancy Pelosi should be replaced in the House s well.
Bill Clinton should be kept as far away from the White House as possible.
Dicky Neely
Corpus Christi, Tx.

Tom in Las Vegas   November 18th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

As an Obama supporter who campaigned hard for the President-Elect, if Hillary is the change we fought so hard for, I’m sorry I didn’t vote for Ralph Nader.

Anthony Chantilly, VA   November 18th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Senator Clinton would be a lot better than Condi Rice!

Jon Gill,philadelphia   November 18th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

She should absolutely j oin Obama”s adminstration. She can have a bigger effect there than in the Senate.
Oh, and as far as vetting. The only vet needed is for her husband, cause he is a dog.

cam   November 18th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

The proper place for Hillary and the rest of the Clintonites in a Obama administration.

The outside looking in.

Unfortunately Obamas presidency is starting to look more like Clinton 2 than change.

Boy did this dude sucker in the American public!

mary Jo   November 18th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Hey Jack, Hillary has been quoted the last month as saying there is zero chance she will run for president again, you have different info than the rest of media. We would all be very lucky however if she decides to serve even though I would personally prefer have her stay on as my Senator.

Lynn   November 18th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Senator from New York!

Dave   November 18th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

It’s better for her to take the job, as Sarah Palin is already sharpening her skills for 2012. With Secretary of State experience, she would have a better shot for 2016

ByeHillary   November 18th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Let Hillary annoy the people of New York and D.C., and NOT the rest of the world! I do not want to hear her voice for 4 more years!

Tomika, Charlotte NC   November 18th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Hillary Clinton would be to bossy. She is a good senator and if she is offered the job she should think closely about it before she takes it. If she decides to and does a bad job she can get fired and be out of a job and her senate seat will be filled and she can’t go back to it. She would have to realize that she is not the president and that her opinions will be heard but will not always be acted out. If she does get offered it and takes it Bill will have to relax and keep quiet. Hillary is a big girl.

Darrell Wayne   November 18th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

The proper role would have been Vice-President! Too late for that. If she doesn’t accept Sect. of State, there will be no role for her and she might as well go back to the Senate. Though I voted for Obama, he missed the boat on this one!

Pat from Toronto   November 18th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Absolutely she should take the position of Secretary of State. This is about what’s best for your country and the world. Its not about any one party or individual agendas.

Marcus   November 18th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

I guess the proper thing to do in this instance is HOPE that she makes the right choice. After all, that is what got Obama where he is today. And for once, can we stop making former President Clinton a liability.

kim in GA   November 18th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

The Clintons are well respected in the world, maybe she can broker some type of peace deal, that remains to be seen. I personally would have liked for John Kerry to be offered the job.

Bill Elliott   November 18th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Secretary of State! We are going to have one of the greatest presidents in our history. Why not have a great Secretary of State too?

jmck   November 18th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Hillary is best suited for Secretary of Health and Human Services. She would be able to concentrate on all the healthcare issues that she worked on as First Lady and hopefully get some real changes made there.

Colin Powell is the best choice for Secretary of State.

Dr. Sam   November 18th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

1. Hillary is immensely qualified to be Secretary of State (judging from her policy knowledge and Senate role); but is she a good manager (look at the way she managed health care reform under Bill Clinton, and the way she managed her campaign)? 2. Is Hillary after the Secretary of State job to block Richardson and Kerry (her nemesis during the primaries) from being considered for the job? What is the cost of alienating Kerry and Richardson, especially the Latino community if Richardson is not chosen?

Harrison R., VA   November 18th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Jack,
We already have a Senator as the President and Vice-President. Let’s get some people with executive experience in there. Besides, Senator Clinton would make a fantastic majority leader. It would be good for her career and her country to stay in the Senate.

Roy Munroe   November 18th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

She would be the number one choice for Secretary of State in my estimation. She is well respected by the world community and versed on the international playing field and would bring respect and honor back into the fold.

Roy
Olympia, WA

Gene   November 18th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

As much as I’d like to see Hillary as Sec. of State… you can’t deny the fact that Bill brings some conflicts of interests to the table… and if that can’t be resolved.. then she can’t hold that post… period.

That’s like a bookie trying to get a job as a general manager in professional sports.

Michael Montero   November 18th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

She would be a great addition to the Obama administration! On the other hand, her strong support by voters this past election is reason enough to keep in her in the Senate where her influence could significantly help critical issues being voted on.

Theda   November 18th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Sorry but no we do not need Hillary as Secretary of State-we need new blood, someone who tells the truth and is willing to negotiate with others.

David Mathews   November 18th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

She should stay in the Senate, and can do far more for the causes
dear to her from that seat. You’re right, Jack, she can and should
quickly rise to a leadership position. Any foreign policy victories
would be to Obama’s credit anyway. If she isn’t to be President, the
Senate is her best position.

James W. Blevins   November 18th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

While Clinton would undoubtedly make an excellent Secretary of State, she would really be more valuable in the senate. Obama is strong enough to get what he wants out of the executive branch, it is probable that the senate will be the weakest link. Clinton in the senate will do a lot to weaken the efforts of the Republicans in the senate.

Jim, Craig, CO

jenny   November 18th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Given her experience with Foreign leaders I beleive she is an excellent choice but I think it would hinder any future run for President. Obama may be trying to sideline her so she is not so much of a threat in the future but he may also really need the help and advise. She should stay put in the Senate.

Shelli   November 18th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Hillary should have no role other than continuing to be a NY Senator and paying off her huge campaign debt. Enough of the Clinton baggage already! We voted for change and Hillary Clinton as Sec of State would not bring about change.

Bob   November 18th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

President elect Obama should put Hillary in charge of developing a universal Health Care Plan. It is close to her heart and she would get it done !

Rosario   November 18th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Hillary Clinton will make Americans and especially women proud if she is given the opportunity to become Madam Secretary of State. Women around the world will celebrate such a great achievement.

Women for Hillary Clinton!

Dr. J Crystal Baxter   November 18th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

I think Hillary should stay a senator. I think she would be excellent in other postions, but if she stayed in the Senate she’d be more or less guaranteed a job. I can see her becoming a valuable senior member like Ted Kennedy. The only other job I’d like to see her in is Supreme Court. We need somene to balance out the right wingers and this also is a permanent job which for the most part is not terribly political.

Cathy   November 18th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

I think we should have McCain as Secretary of State and Hilary should be with Health and human Services that is their interest and they would not only like what they are doing but would make them perform top notch. i think Hilary will undermine Obama in the position of Secretary of State this is how I felt when the possibility of her becoming vice president came up i love Hilary and voted for her but she is a very strong woman and is very committed about how things should be done which would cause conflict if Obama’s ideas went against her belief

merci   November 18th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

hi jack i watch the show every day. u and wolf are the best. to the question yes clinton will be the best for that job she is great.

Paula Blankenship   November 18th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

She should stay in the Senate. To hitch her wagon to Obama’s star would mean a dead end for her career. She’s much better than that. The Obama White House would better serve itself to appoint a man to this post anyway. Most of the problem areas in the world see women as second class citizens and consider it an insult to have to negotiate with women.

Jesse McNeil   November 18th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Jack, I think that Hillary should take the job as sec. of state. The Obama administration is going to look like gold with anything they do after this whole Bush era and it’s going to make Hillary look good, She might as well take it, only way from here on out is up.

len   November 18th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Obama is not going to mass up if she knows whats good for her, Hilary has to jump on board, and maybe after Obama she could become the next president.

Orion   November 18th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

This country is facing unprecedented challenges internationally and domestically. This is a time in our history to call for all hands on deck. We need this country’s best and brightest to help lead the way out of this mess. I am proud to see Pres-elect Obama reaching out to prime candidates for top positions regardless of past disagreements. Hillary is a patriot and a respected power player who will do what her country needs of her. Right now it is for to take the mantle of Secretary of State and not Jr. Senator from New York.

Karolyn   November 18th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Hillary Clinton is the best possible choice for Secretary of State. After her primary defeat she worked hard for Obama, she knows the world and is popular worldwide.

Rob in Edmonton Alberta   November 18th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Hillary’s best choice is to keep what she has. Supporting Obama as she said she would, but keeping her focus in the Senate would only strengthen her positions in the future, rather than allowing herself to slip into obscurity down the road due to any number of potential downfalls of the administration, if any, that she may be attached to or seen as “Guilty by association”. Senator Clinton could make it through much better than Secretary Clinton of a failed administration. Wisdom before Whimsy. PS: I support both Obama and Clinton, but each has to travel their own path if they want to achieve their own goals and aspirations.

john in weyburn   November 18th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Hillary must be in charge of the Universal Health Care Program.
I am a big Barack fan but Hillary has a better plan for Health Care.
They need to find common ground here. If Hillary can give America
Univeral Health Care…hell, who needs to be president. It will be
hailed as one of the biggest humanitarin accomplishment in U.S. history.

Joel   November 18th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

The best role for Sen. Clinton in Obama’s administration is none, she can’t be secretary of state (then all she’ll be telling us is about Bosnia), and her negativity would infect the change we voted for.

Lois   November 18th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Long term I think that Hillary should stay in the Senate, but, if a run for the presidency is really not on her agenda, then Secretary of State would be great.. If Obama is even thinking of Richardson in that post, it will be his first blunder.

Lois

Mike Slavick, Pittsburgh, PA   November 18th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Secretary of State is the perfect role for Senator Clinton in the Obama Administration. Bill will have to sacrafice making his dealings transparent. This can only help her on a Presidential bid, and we can only improve after the current band-of-thieves adminstration.

Joan   November 18th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

President-Elect Obama owes everything to Hillary and Bill. Without their compaigning he would never have made it to the presidency.
Hillary would be an ecxcellent Secretary of State. It is time she gets her due!

Joan

JR Spencer   November 18th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Hillary Clinton will be an excellent Secretary of State and President Clinton will be an asset. Most people in the know, even former Secretaries of State think she would be the best of the possible choices available now. President Clinton has done great things with the foundation he heads and it should be noted that the foundation does much more good for so much less that our government. If fact it should be a model of how to get things done rather than a source of another pointless investigation like Whitewater. A better use of time would be how the foundation spends it’s money rather than where it comes from. It’s enough to know that important people worldwide support it and important people worldwide like and support the Clintons.

Claudia   November 18th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Hillary should become Secretary of Health & Human Services. Health care for all American is the cause she championed as First Lady and presidential candidate. This has been her calling card.
Bill Richardson is the man for Secretary of State.

Rhonda   November 18th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Hillary Clinton is an excellent choice for Secretary of State. She is intelligent and has a background of familiarity with world leaders. Should she take it? Yes. It is the best position from which to help our nation and the world and would elevate her to a higher status than junior Senator from New York.

Barbara W.   November 18th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

In the Obama Administration, Senator Clinton could be considered as an advisor, period. Possibly a Supreme Court appointee, etc. As far as Secretary of State – there is the ‘Bill Factor’, his influence on his wife’s decisions, (who will be the Secretary – Hillary and Bill, Hillaryand/or Bill? How do you separate the two? Will he also meet with the Heads of State, have input at dinners they attend as her escort?), his Foundation and those who have contributed may/could be a conflict of interest. A consultant/advisor would probably be the least complicated/compromised role for her.

Fallah   November 18th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Jack,
She is qualify but America cannot afford another regrets. Is this the change Obama promised, bringing the old players in the game?

Orlando A. Bartlett   November 18th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Hello Jack…to answer your question… I believe that it would be great to have Hillary Clinton as the next Secretary of State. Again this is a time to do what is right for the country. Though, her career would be tied to President-elect Obama’s Administration…she ran her campaign on the basis that she was running for what she felt was “Right for the Country” I believe that Hillary is strong enough to seperate herself from the Obama Administration if she chose to run in 2012. So what is “Right for the Country” now is to have her as the next S.O.S.!! She will be great and I do not believe she will have any worries of what will come of the next Administration! So, Obama, “Ask her!!” and Hillary “You Go!” Viva the next Administration!!

Stacy from Loudoun County VA   November 18th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Senator Clinton for Health and Human Services. I think should could really affect Healthcare Policy along with Ted Kennedy in the Senate and finally get something done about something that has costed Americans dearly for so long. Bill Richardson sacrificed more in joining Obama, therefore I think Sec of State would be a great position and I think he would work well alongside VP Joe Biden.

Elizabeth Walker   November 18th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

“I serve at the pleasure of the President.” It was a line from a “West Wing” episode that impressed me with both the responsibility and the gravity of being asked to serve in an administration. As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton would be serving her country, possibly in a much more important way than as President. Her “proper role” is whatever the President requests. As a life long idealist I believe she knows that and will serve in any way that she is asked.

Scaly Mountain, NC

Allen in Hartwell, GA   November 18th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

With the obvious political ambition shown by Senator Clinton, I would think that she would give better service remaining in the senate and leaving open the option of another run for president, or whatever else might come in the future.

Steve   November 18th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Does Hillary being Secretary of State prevent Kerry or Hagel serving in the cabinet? If so, I’m all for it. If Bill Richardson is choice #2, I’d much rather see her challenge Harry Reid for Majority Leader. Please?

Debbie Gimelson   November 18th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Hillary’s best political position is wherever the president-elect wants her – I don’t think she’d expect anything less were she in his position and I also think it is already clear he can take her on and win. What bores me is the veting and re-vetting of Bill Clinton – this guy has been examined more thoroughly than a pig at the State Fair.

Doris/St. Louis, MO   November 18th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Thanks but No thanks, I feel that Hillary spells trouble for President elect Obama’s administration.

Garry Rief   November 18th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

I DON’T THINK SO. I think that Hilary should be offered the job of heading up health care. After all that’s where her heart seemed to be all the way through the primaries. She would be a great advocate for the
people who really need help. When she was running her theme was to
change the system and make health care affordable for everyone. Give her a chance to back up her promise. With the President and senate behind her maybe you guys down south can get the kind of coverage we enjoy up here in Canada.
Garry ( Ottawa, Can. )

Jack   November 18th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Jack, Hillary is a great leader and diplomat and being Sec of State would be an ideal position for her, even with the excess baggage she has to carry, named Bill.

Larry   November 18th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Jack, the Dems are giving away too many powerful congressional seats. Obama should pick Gov. Richardson for the state job. Senator Clinton best serves the administration and the nation on the Hill.

Kimberly Scott Robb   November 18th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Looking at it from her side, if – after eight years – she still wants to run for president, she would be at a better advantage from the Secy of State position. In the meantime, she can do far more for the country from that position than as a junior senator.

If she stays in the Senate, she will be helpful, but nowhere near as powerful for years, until she gains seniority. Yet she would be very helpful working on health care.

Right now she’s at the top of her game; she’s at her sharpest and most popular. She’d be at her most productive NOW ,so for me, the answer lies in which position she will do the most good.

My guess is Secretary of State. I hope she takes it.

Vick Welsh   November 18th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Jack, he should do what is best for the country first!! That being said I believe she would be a good choice, she is a very smart compedent person who would do a good job.

Kevin in Dallas, TX   November 18th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Her proper role is as a Senator. There’s enough old blood coming in to Obama’s administration already. Blood the American people have been trying to vote out.

Jim, from Las Vegas   November 18th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Obama owes Hillary bigtime. Having said that, I think Hillary should stay in the Senate and do everything she can to keep his administration open and honest. Obama is hedging his bets for 2012 by bringing her into his administration. It will be hard for Hillary to mount a run in 2012 against a failed Obama administration if she is part of it.

susants   November 18th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

I voted for Obama, because he promised competency in his appointments and to raise moral/ethical standards in government.
Senator Clinton has no training or experience in foreign affairs.
The way she managed her campaign, she proved to have no management or people skills.
The Clintons morals and ethical lapses are legendary.
Obama has failed to understand what we voters and people in foreign countries expected of him.
He has squandered his trust capital for nothing.

Stan - San Francisco   November 18th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Hillary must choose between serving the country and personal aspiration. I hope she will let her waning, productive years be her guide.

J R   November 18th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

The proper role is no role at all. Period.

Scott Bray   November 18th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

I truly believe Hillary knows how badly American needs her right now and will step into the Secretary of State role without a second thought about whether the job hasn’t traditionally a stepping stone to the Presidency.

But when you think about it, what better way could a person prove themselves worthy than by restoring America’s name and reputation around the world?

My dream: 8 years of Barack Obama followed by 8 years of Hilliary Clinton.

Shauna   November 18th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

If H.Clinton wants to work indepedently and feels the greatest joy as the New York Senator and if she feels that her career isn’t over and there are still higher glass ceilings that she needs to break then I would suggest that she stays in her current position and not give it up. As far as I’m concerned, she is a great leader and America would love her as president in the later future.

However, if she decides to take the position as secstate then in a way she has given up on her dreams. And there is nothing wrong with that because the secstate position is a very high and worthy position and it is a blessing and an honour that Obama has counted her suitable for.

All in all, it is her opinion and I feel that no one decision will make or break her. Who is to say that she will actually live for another presidential campaign or if she did, there is no guarantee that she will get it, but at this point she is the only female that is suitable for such a title at this moment.

Ross in MD   November 18th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

The proper role for Hillary Clinton? Passive observer.

David in Raleigh   November 18th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

Send Hillary and Bill home. We don’t need another four years of Clinton scandals.

Ralebol   November 18th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Keep the Clinton out of the Obama administration. We voted for an Obama administration, we voted for an Obama doctrine, we voted for an Obama vision. Not a Cinton-one, not even a half-Clinton half-Obama one. It’s 100% Obama that we want. If he brings Hillary into his administration, we will never know for sure whether whatever is decided is an Obama or a Clinton decision.

Lynn, Columbia, Mo..   November 18th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Don’t know, don’t care.

kapinatl   November 18th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Does that mean she will have to follow his command and obey his orders? Will she have to talk to people she does not like without her required pre-conditions? Will her husband disclose all the money he receives for his philanthropic endeavors and for profit income? If these three things can be met, than I say “go for it” Obama, Just don’t sit with your back to the door!

Teresa Graham   November 18th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

I think that if Obama offers and Hillary accepts the position, this will give Americans great confidence in where this country is going. With Obama line of Administration it sounds like it’s going to be Ocean’s 11 running the White House. A group of pal’s working together to get the job done! I like it!

Molly B   November 18th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Jack I think she should go with the Obama team. She will be very
good in that position, with or with out her husbands input. She
helped create the winning team and has so very much to offer
the country. Her (and Bills) connections with the world are so
very important. However, she may prefer to work her magic
from her senate seat. This appointment seems to be played
waaaaaay out of proportion.

Mike in Kansas   November 18th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Her proper role is “yes” man.

Heather in Boise   November 18th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

She does not have the right disposition for Secretary of State and I would hate to send her to foreign governments representing the U.S.. I would worry that she will advocate for her views, her way, rather than follow the direction of Obama. I hope he doesn’t trust her with that position and instead moves in new directions. She does not deserve a consolation prize.

John Savage, Mattoon IL   November 18th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Given her experience and passion fighting for universal health care and women’s issues, it seems to me Hillary would make a great Secretary of Health & Human Services. Bill Richardson’s credentials would make him a better choice for Secretary of State.

Jan from Delaware   November 18th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Maybe it’s a lack of understanding on my part but if Bill’s foreign projects would not hurt her administration if she had won the Oval Office, why would they now hurt her or Obama’s administration if she were to become Secretary of State? When it comes to politics and what is best for the nation (at least), I think Bill knows how to handle himself and his business affairs. And who says Hillary won’t run for President or the Senate again, after her term is over?

A grandma in Des Moines, IA   November 18th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Jack – I believe the Clintons are only for the Clintons. Obama doesn’t need to get involved in their dirty laundry. There are others as qualified, such as Gov. Richardson.

Loretta   November 18th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Hillary’s versatility enables her to handle any role in Barack Obama’s administration. She is a class act. She has had a resounding comeback and is more popular now than ever before. She and Barack are very compatible and have great admiration for eachother.
In addition, both Hillary and Bill Clinton are popular worldwide. Hillary will be a great asset to Barack Obama’s administration.

Janey   November 18th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

why not Hillary? Everyone else is from the Clinton pool. No change, though. so much for “silly season” campaign promises

Kevin, Ohio   November 18th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

He promised us change and now he brings in old Washington, he even McCain is in the picture now. First they fight each other and now they are old friends. Just like old Washington Obama. I voted for the wrong guy. More of the same old.

Ron from Missouri   November 18th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Jack – let’s make it exciting. Hillary should take the job of Secretary of State and then that would free up the positon of junior senator for Bill.
Just think – Live from New York – its Senator Bill Clinton! You know you love it Jack!

Cat, Mn   November 18th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Secretary of State.

TomN from California   November 18th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Jack,
I would like to see Hillary Clinton remain in the senate as a lawmaker, where she can put forth her much emphasized domestic programs and assisting Barack Obama’s agendas. I still would like to see her make another run for the presidency in a few years, but in the past the public view of her has been a polarizing figure. I think that her concession to Obama in the primaries and then supporting and campaigning with her husband for him in the general election has helped more Americans see her more favorably, but she still has the polarizing stigmata. So I think that if she takes the Secretary of State job, then she will have more opportunities to show America that she is a worthy stateswoman and leader–thus, increasing her credibility and another, hopefully successful, campaign for the presidency in the future.

Conor in Chicago   November 18th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

She can co-opt his presidency either way-either from the floor of the Senate or directly in international affairs. Choose your poison wisely Mr. Obama.

Phil, Georgia   November 18th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Secretary of state seems like a pretty good role for Hillary. Eventhough she was the dirtiest campaigner and really tried to make race an issue, Obama always seems to amaze me, being the bigger person and doing whats best for the country. Bills money raising really shouldn’t fault them as long as they pledge not to do any favors for past dealings.

Stan G   November 18th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

The issue of Pres Clintons business dealings is a none issue if it wasnt raised in the primaries she should absoultely be sec of state period!

Allen in Hartwell, GA   November 18th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

She should remain in the Senate, and get every post held by Joe Lieberman. To let Lieberman keep his committee posts is an insult to every Democrat in the Senate, except Harry Reid, I guess.

SAM in NH   November 18th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

It seems people either love her or hate her.
But she is class act and will serve this country exceptionally in whatever role, be it Senator, Secr. of State or in the health care initiative.

John in Columbus Ohio   November 18th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Is there a proper role for Hillary Clinton? Of course, there is a proper role for everything. May God bless and keep Hillary Clinton… far away from us!

Sarah, Richmond VA   November 18th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Hillary Clinton has a concise, to the point way of getting her idea across and has a good feel for the situations she has had to deal with which is what is needed for a good Secretary of State.
John Kerry would bore someone to tears before he ever got his point across. The Senate is the perfect place to keep him.

Dylan   November 18th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Clinton would be better off staying in the Senate. Bill is taking too long vetting and revealing his finances. Sounds like there could be too many conflicts of interest.

Who Is He Kidding   November 18th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

We know he made a deal with the Clintons but he also made a deal and a promise to America for CHANGE.

Any Clinton in his immediate cabinet is NOT CHANGE. Come on Barrack, you know Bill can’t be trusted…you know he will make a buck of any deal he can broker on the backs of Americas hardworking middle class so just SAY NO.

Put her in some other post but for God’s sake not Secretary of State where we are trying to improve our image. The world has not forgotten her lies about that famous landing strip and brokering a peace accord. The world IS watching and the Clintons have no role in a new image. That was determined in the primaries don’t ya think?

Nick   November 18th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

She has experience ducking sniper fire… im sure she’d be an excellent pick… LOL

Roland   November 18th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

The proper role for Senator Clinton is the one in which President Obama feels most comfortable working with her. Isn’t that why Mr. Obama chose Senator Biden for VP? Because President Obama is not looking to public opinion as much as he is looking to work with the people whom he feels will offer the most to each cabinet position, and challenge his thinking when necessary. I believe that Senator Clinton is a noble person with the best interests of the country at heart and I have no doubt that wherever she continues to serve, it will be of great value to our nation.

Roland
St. George, UT

Jeff from Minnesota   November 18th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

I think there are good political reasons to put Senator Clinton somewhere in the Obama administration. She’s not going to be happy in the Senate since Ted Kennedy has usurped Health Care. The other Democrats are not going to elect her Majority Leader. So, the Obama administration needs to find her a spot so that she doesn’t muck up the legislative agenda.

mary in Indiana   November 18th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Jack,
I think Hilliary should stay in the Senate and work on things that are passionate to her. Or maybe another position in the cabinet that will not conflict with Bill’s works. This way, no one have to worry about Bill or Hillary forgetting their place. Bill will forget and think he has become Sec. of State and not Hillary.

Bonnie   November 18th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

Hey Jack, If I had wanted to see Hillary Clinton’s face on tv every day i would have voted for her. for a clean, fresh start in this country, I would hope we could do without any of the Bush or Clinton families. We’ve had enough of both over the past 20 years. enough is enough!

JDC // Ohio   November 18th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

Clinton re-treads are being appointed all over the place; why not Hillary? Another scandalous four years???

Jeff   November 18th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

Food Taster. She’s qualified.

deb in az   November 18th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

well most of his new cabinet will be clintons old one…..change we can depend on right…….what a joke the same old politics…….just hope they all learn how to stop spending money that they just dont have……

Jay F Carson Jr   November 18th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

Clinton has no shot at President in ’12. I find no sitting President has lost their parties nomination to a same-party challenger, especially under the primary systems since 1920. Even a popular former President Roosevelt could not wrestle the nomination from fellow Republican President Taft. That leaves Clinton waiting for 2016 at age 72 with boomers dying off. That will leave Hillary’s personal legacy wanting because there is not way in ‘16. A cabinet position is a slap in the face for what she has accomplished. I think the best she could do to bolster that legacy is a Supreme Court Appointment, Obama owes her at least that, and I am a life long Republican. If she goes to Sec of State for the interim, waiting for that SC to open, then that would be a good thing, but she needs to go to the Court to cement her legacy.

Karen Alexander   November 18th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

I think Hill should do what is best for her. I don’t think the Obama administration will be a bad part of her history If she wants to run again in the future. There are also other top jobs she would be experienced to do. Do we really need another FEMALE Sec. of state? 3rd world countries don’t take women seriously anyway. Wouldn’t we be better off with a man in this position?

dee in dallas, tx   November 18th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

i think Hillary should go to the Supreme Court and Bill Richardson should get this position….

Phil in KC   November 18th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

First of all, I don’t think Bill has done anything wrong in his business dealings since leaving the presidency. That said, there are certain dealings which may raise questions regarding conflict of interest for Hillary. So I have real concerns regarding that.
I think the best place for Hillary would be the Supreme Court. Of course, that would not be immediate, since she would have to wait for one of the sitting justices to retire or pass. But it would be permanent. And it would allow her to have a lasting impact.

Erik in Provo, UT   November 18th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

Let Mr. Obama bring back the Clinton’s, Jack. That’s change we can believe in.

Bryan NY   November 18th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

Obama’s former rival becoming his secretary of state. I dont get it, how can Obama go from telling america how she wouldnt be able to be president to giving her a job like secretary of state. has anyone asked him about this. I dont think politics will ever change

Luffing   November 18th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

If Hillary’s appointed Secretary of State (which I would not prefer), at least President-elect Obama could keep an eye on her…

Glenn Doty   November 18th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

Jack, I think the proper role for Sen Clinton in the Obama administration is “spectator”.

She’s a fine senator, and well poised to be one of the powerhouses of the senate, probably the heir of Ted Kennedy…

But she would only add drama and distraction to the White House.

She hasn’t shown herself to be well suited for management, and while she’s knowlegeable about many things, there are going to be specialists that are more qualified for any specific position.

thomas sullivan   November 18th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

Jack, I think Ms. Clinton would better serve herself by staying a Sen.. She has been entrusted by the State of NY by people who respect her decisions alone. I believe things could change quite a bit in 4 yrs. An 8 year term is not a gimme. Any decision by her under the Obama administration would not be totally her own. Tom

Dott   November 18th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

She should sit home with her ex-president husband, and just enjoy history being made. She has no place in the Obama administration. She already had her turn, time and time again! (8 years)

Ed'sKate   November 18th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

Actually, the Health,Education,Welfare post would be a better place for her in the cabinet, I believe. However, she probably would be smarter to stay where she is in the Senate. She would be in a better position to get health reform passed if she did that.

Fred May Sr. WA.   November 18th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Hillary Clinton for Secretary of State. If she can keep Bill’s nose out of her job. She has the ability. Other wise Gen. Colin Powell would be the man.

Jocelyne, CA   November 18th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

I think she should be in charge of overhauling health care, maybe this time around it will go through

D Peterson from Lake Zurich, Illinois   November 18th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

Hi Jack, the role of Hillary Clinton in the Obama Administration is to stick it to Sarah Palin for her underhanded remarks on the GOP Campain trail. Go HIllary!

Colleen @ Saginaw, Michigan   November 18th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

I’d rather see Hilary appointed as Secretary of Defense, with Sen. Daniel Inouye of Hawaii as Homeland Security Secretary. She’s strong, but his track record shows he’s one smart, tough cookie.

Karl from SF, CA   November 18th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

I would have loved to see her as Attorney General and looking into the Bush years but with the selection of Eric Holder, I see her as Secretary of State or on the Supreme Court. Either would suit her well.
