Part III of the Couric-Palin interview will air tonight.
Part III of the Couric-Palin interview will air tonight.

FROM CNN's Jack Cafferty:

Last Friday, we ran a piece of tape from an interview Governor Sarah Palin did with "CBS Evening News" anchor Katie Couric. She was asked about the bailout package. Palin rambled on incoherently for nearly a minute about trade, jobs, health care... Everything but the bailout package.

That segment of the Cafferty File was posted on YouTube and as of today has received more than one million, one hundred thousand hits.

Watch: Jack Cafferty's YouTube Clip

Well guess what? She's ba-ack. Palin did another interview with Couric in which she was asked about the first interview.

Palin responded, “Well, not only am I ready, but willing and able to serve as vice president with Senator McCain if Americans so bless us and privilege us with the opportunity of serving them, ready with my executive experience as a city mayor and manager, as a governor, as a commissioner, a regulator of oil and gas.”

Here’s my question to you: Is Sarah Palin helping her chances by continuing to do interviews with Katie Couric?

Interested to know which ones made it on air?

Karen from Missouri writes:
No, and she didn't do the interview with Katie Couric. Palin AND McCain did the interview. He didn't even let her answer many of the questions that she was supposed to answer. Palin always has the same answer. She sounds like a wind-up doll. Oil and gas regulator? Excuse me?

Liz from Tucson, Arizona writes:
I have no doubt she fits right in in Alaska, but not on the World stage. McCain should not have asked her. If she were a sincere and honest person she would not have accepted the place on the ticket. That was clearly not a decision for the betterment of the nation.

Trudy writes:
Within 3 minutes, you reminded me why I don't watch the opinionated news on CNN. It's difficult for the Republican Party to run against Obama and the entire broadcast media. Your condescending attitude toward Sarah Palin is another example of the lockstep left trying to portray a Republican as less intelligent.

Saar from Tel Aviv, Israel writes:
In the 1970's, Bette Midler said it best, and this is what John McCain must believe too. Midler said: "Of course I have standards. They may be exceedingly low but I do have standards.”

K. from Tallahassee, Florida writes:
I think she made it worse in the second interview. She had to bring Daddy McCain to help her. She looks like she can't talk to the press on her own.

Carolyn from New York writes:
Jack, I agree with you completely. I have never before felt frightened for my country, but the idea of Sarah Palin becoming President is truly beyond belief. John McCain put our national interest in last place when making this selection. Country first? Far from it!

Kev writes:
Katie Couric very well may be saving the United States and perhaps the World from the idiotic words of Sarah Palin. Can you imagine four years of her? I'm not sure she is qualified to be the Governor of Alaska. It's great though. You couldn't write this stuff.

Palin's interviews with Couric are making her look increasingly ridiculous. Still, if they help her to see how completely unqualified she is for the vice presidency, I suppose that could be viewed as a positive effect.

Peggy Hellier   September 30th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

those interviews are not helping Sarah but they are helping the American people because they are assuring that Sarah will never hold national office.

Matthew, Newark NJ   September 30th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

No they definitely are not. And woefully so! Katie Couric is a 'soft shoe' as far as political reporting goes . . . and she is unmasking her even more than Gibson did?! How bad do you have to be when the gibson interview went better than the Couric one!?

Byron from Cincinnati, OH   September 30th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

I seriously doubt they're helping, but it's helpful to the democrats, I wonder if she's a secret democrat sent to destroy the McCain campaign. This is the second time she has agreed with Obama, but the McCain campaign had to recant her statement. LOL...this election is nuts.

Glenn in California   September 30th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Jack, is that a trick question?

They're helping all right, helping Obama and Biden to win the general election come November 4th. Everytime Caribou Barbie is let loose, she demonstrates how inept she is, and how poor John McSame's judgment was to pick her in the first place.

Come November 5th, she'll quickly become a trivia answer that I hope I don't remember the answer to.

GORDON   September 30th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

I DON'T KNOW, HAFT THE TIME I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT SHE IS TALKING ABOUT, THE OTHER HAFT DON'T MAKE ANY SENCE

Linda   September 30th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

She isn't helping herself get elected, but she sure is helping the voters see how ill-equipped she is to speak without a script.

R.J. - Ohio   September 30th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

If you saw the interview you know the answer is NO.

Then last night she had to bring McCain with her to answer the questions because she obviously doesn't have near enough experience to give an intelligent answer.

I can't wait until she debates Joe Biden on Thursday!

Courtney, South Windsor, CT   September 30th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Well they're probably helping Couric's ratings, but certainly not Palin's. And heck, Tina Fey really drove the point home when the SNL skit she did used actual transcripts from the Couric interviews. I think that really says it all: Plain is her own worst enemy – and that's saying a lot.

AndyZag Fairfax, VA   September 30th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Will she have her 15 minutes of fame and then become obscure. Nah, I don't think so. She's feisty in a Bill Clinton around interns sort of way. Four years from now she could become the First Babe and her husband would be the First Dude. All America could see her on cable giving classes in extreme weather survival and how to dress a moose. That's the kind of president I want! (sic!)

Jim   September 30th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Don't know if it's helping her or not, but it sure makes for great comic relief.

Domenic from Montreal, Canada   September 30th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Jack in Sarah's interviews with Katie, it has shown me that she has the same I.Q. as G.W. Bush, which means next to none.

To answer your question. No.

She is making Dan Quale look like a genius.

Darrell from Indiana   September 30th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Oh yes, they have made SNL funny again. SNL does not need writers for new material. They can just copy Palin's statements word for word.

John in Santa Barbara, CA   September 30th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

I saw the interview with Katie Couric, and then the spoof of it on Saturday Night Live, and they were almost the same. A cold shiver went through me. The last time somebody that ignorant and that far to the right got next to some real power, the headline read, "Hitler named Chancellor of Germany."

judy in Florida   September 30th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

No...... but then what would we look forward to for a good laugh. In these times , not job, no rent money, standing in line at the food pantries....while hiding from the repo-guy.... we all need a good laugh. Sorry Katie... take two aspirin and get ready for the next sit down.

Mark - Asheville, NC   September 30th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

If she stopped, her critics would say she is afraid to continue; if she continues they will pick out everything she says and attack her with it. The media are continuing their single minded agenda to install Obama in the White House even though he is really no more qualified than Palin – he just has hundreds of journalists as protectors.

What I would like to see would be Obama replaced by Hillary, and Palin replaced by Giuiliani, and then we would at least have two tickets without unready neophytes. As it is, we have the equivalents of Dan Quayle on both sides!

Tina G   September 30th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Enough of Katie Curic!! She has received enough of Sarah's time!

Tina\Houston TX

Dennis, Cleveland ,Ohio   September 30th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

YES, It is helping her to get sent BACK 2 Alaska!

Mike   September 30th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

My God, that's like asking "How did you like the play, Mrs. Lincoln?"
Answer is NO, NO, NO!!!

I've yet to see her string a coherent pair of sentences together. How on God's green Earth can that help? I am tempted to feel sorry for her, but she has no one to blame but herself for being in this position.

When I was 7, I played football with the teenagers and came home with a bloody lip. All my father could say was "Well what did you expect?"

She should have politely declined. And for his part, McCain, the supposed Maverick, should have had the guts to choose someone like Tom Ridge; but instead he cowered when threatened by the party's right wing because Ridge is pro-choice. So much for the Maverick BS. They're getting pounded now, and they're getting exactly what they deserve.

Philip from Toronto   September 30th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

No, she is like Alaska Fools Gold, just a flash in the pan, but under examination....worthless.

Monique Mellon, Moncton New Brunswick Canada   September 30th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Jack,
Stick a fork in her, she's done! Bert and Ernie could interview her and she would still look like what she is, CLUELESS!! And now McCain is saying Palin is like Clinton and Reagan, a dark horse governor that will win....LMAO.....I don't know what kind of drugs they are on, but they must be really good ones. At least Reagan didn't lose his mind until after he was president, and he had an excuse, he was ill. McCain is just nuts!!!

Shana   September 30th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

well Jack... I mean she is just so nervous... It gotta be about job creation and reform... I mean all of that plus that other thing... You know what jack, as soon as I can get some info, I'll get back to ya!

bobby in florida   September 30th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Yes; Jack I believe if she keeps on having interviews with Katie Couric

by the end of October she should be well back into her own back yard

looking at Russia.

Edward Gaddis   September 30th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

As the saying goes when you find yourself in a hole stop digging. Palin and McBush have to learn that.

john   September 30th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Helping? Sure, if she likes being buried alive.

Ryan   September 30th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

No she is not but she is certainly helping Tina Fey's. At first it was funny, now I am actually sad for Palin. It is embarassing to watch. Keep up the good work Sarah Palin, Katie Couric, and Tina Fey! We Democrats really appreciate it.

Arkansas

angee   September 30th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

No! She is not helping her party...and I can't wait until Ms. Palin and Mr. Biden debate on Thurs. As far as the last debate, did anyone catch the comment that John McCain made about the Koreans height being the only way to tell them a part from the North & South regions? Please tell me you caught that one Jack!

Brian HB, Sonderborg in Denmark   September 30th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Jack.
Having viewed the last two interviews Couric did with her, it's so hard to find evidence of anything, Sarah Palin could possibly benifit from.

This pittbull turned out to be a puppy, way out of its league.

Kevin   September 30th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Dear Jack, I sincerely believe that anyone with any serious evaluation of Sarah Palin's answers during the Couric interview cannot help but conclude this woman has no clue about national, international or even local affairs. Mc Cain should be spanked for this one!!!

Judy - Phila PA   September 30th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

It helps Saturday Night Live!

Mike Ciurca   September 30th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

If anything she seems to be hurting her chances by continuing these interviews. I just watched the clip of Katie Couric interview Sarah Palin on the 700 billion dollar bailout, and Palin had absolutely no idea what she was talking about. She thought the money was for bailing out TAXPAYERS, not MORTGAGE COMPANIES. I'm less than half as old as she is, and I probably know more about government than she ever will, having taken, oh, I don't know, A CIVICS CLASS.

Brett in Oriskany,Va   September 30th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Paliin's interviews are helping only one person.. Barack Obama1 People are beginning to realize that John McCain will do anything to get elected. That icludes putting his own wants ahead of the country. Poor Sarah is being manipulated by the Rove team running McCain's campaign. She is give little phrases on each topic to memorize and when she gets flustered(like she did with Katie Couric)she just strings them together in a desparate attempt save face. She has been hidden from the media for a month and now on her first run out of the gate she stumbles. She's in this way over her head.

Michael - Las Vegas   September 30th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

I didn't see anything last night that encouraged me. Interesting to note that John was there to rescue her though. Frightening to think we need a veep or potentially a prez who needs to be rescued.

Jeromey Andaya   September 30th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

As an American voter that has traditionally voted republican since I turned 18 I can honestly say that Bush cured me of voting republican, and hearing Gov. Sarah Palin's interview with Katie Couric have pretty much made me loose any and all faith that there is an intelligent member of the republican party. Why on earth would they put this lady in such an important role.

bob   September 30th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

palin's is the same as bush & chaney she refuses to honor a court order.no more of the same crooks.

Marc Tacoma, Wash.   September 30th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

No Jack. It's telling us that if she doesn't understand whats going on outside of Alaska, How can she become the leader of the free world. What she need to do is drop out and take McCain with her. She has swallowed too much of the McCain prune juice and it is not working in her favor.

Jolly Potter, NY   September 30th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Jack,

she is only enhancing her chances of appearing in person on SNL as and when Tina Fey decides she is tired of impersonating Palin. Palin can then be the next Tina Fey. As regards her chances of being the next VP – the more she is exposed by journalists like Couric the more we will see that she is not qualified to represent the United States on any forum to do with National or Foreign Policy issues.

Rod From Chicago   September 30th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Jack I am no rocket scientist, but when Katie Couric interviewed both John McCain and Sarah Palin about questions that they should obviously know about concerning our nation welfare, they tried to spent it as if journalist are always asking them the I “gotcha question’s “is outrageously laughable. This is the kind of responds that we have come to expect from the not so bright crew, that don’t know the answer to the questions that they are being asked about concerning this nation. Jack, it appears that we have shipped integrity, honestly and reasoning overseas along with everything else. This is simply morally devastating to our nation future, along with our standing around the world.

Bruce in Bend OR   September 30th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

This is a closely related question. We heard this morning that the McCain campaign wants to limit debate points for the VP candidates to sound bites. Does this bunch of troglodytes give a damn about the US at all? We need to know what makes this woman tick. C'mon John if upstaging dad and grandpa is what you're all about maybe somebody could give you an honorary presidential plaque for your mantle & be done with this charade.

OLDEWOK, COTTONWOOD, CA.   September 30th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

YES..Sara made Katie look like a east coast liberal SNOB...WE love socker moms...and dont want them picked on by the elit snobs.
.

LJ in MD   September 30th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

So our Sarah snitched on that evil, bully Couric and brought her Grampa to Couric's house to have a "talk" with her. It is a good thing little Sarah had her Grampa there to keep the big, mean "gotcha monsters" away. That Couric beast! Everyone knows she lives deep in the land of the ultra-liberal-socialist elite (that is, those who choose to ignore any other interview she has ever done with a politician). She was still a little scared, but with Grampa John by her side she got up the courage to say the magic right-wing words (given to her by the wizard Rove) and take away the Couric's power.
We should all be so very proud of our little Sarah. She sure showed those gotcha monsters and the world is now a more snugly safe place. Now it is her beddy-bye time (for the next 2.5 days). We need to leave her alone so she can sleep and dream of more magic words so she can fight the Biden. Sweet dreams pretty Sarah.

Janet, BC   September 30th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Absolutely not, but that might be a very good thing. If she continues to make an ass of herself, there won't be any chance for McCain to win. All these interviews do is help Obama. The problem is that they can't prepare her enough for this kind of interview, because she does not have any experience in foreign policy.

I can see the ocean from my house, I've got Marine Biology experience!

Wake up, America. This woman cannot lead your country.

Jan Davis, Knoxville, TN   September 30th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Her interviews with Couric are making her look worse. At the same time, Couric is coddling her, giving her much easier questions than the men in the campaign are getting. This Palin woman comes across as uneducated and uninformed. She needs to drop out of the campaign. Personally I would love to see Wolf or Campbell Brown interview her. If she can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen!

OBAMA 08

Tim - NJ   September 30th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Sarah Palin is clueless if she really believes that she deserves to be running for VP – of anything except maybe the PTA. And shame on McCain for convincing her to do this, which also explains where I think McCain stands as a possible future President. I am unfortunately a registered republican and am disgusted by what I've seen and heard from both of them. So, if she doesn't get elected, do you think she'll see it as God's will? It is absolutely scary that this has gotten this far.

Michael "C" Lorton, Virginia   September 30th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Jack: No. She is just continually hurting herself. I think the Katie Couric interview shows that she needs to be briefed more on certain aspects. She continues to be viewed very positively by the base of the party, but she needs to demonstrate that she’s got the knowledge and ability to be president should the need arise. Polling suggests that the number of Americans who think she is not fit to be president has increased since her introduction to the country last month and the recent Couric interview. A number of conservative columnists and thinkers have publicly turned against her, or criticized Mr. McCain for choosing her, including George Will, David Brooks and Kathleen Parker, who wrote a column entitled “She’s Out of Her League” for the National Review Online.

Ms. Palin is getting ready for the debate at a time of enormous uncertainty about a highly complicated issue, the unfolding crisis on Wall Street, which makes preparing for the debate face off especially hard........Good Luck Governor........you are going to need all the luck you can gather.

EJ   September 30th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

The old addage that " it's better to keep your mouth shut and have half the people think you're an idiot rather than open it and remove all doubt" certainly applies to Palin. Unfortunately, as a VP candidate, she has to talk to the media or get back on her Alaska porch.

Lynne   September 30th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Jack, you asked the other day if McCain should ask Palin to step aside. Linda from Torrence, CA responded:

"Sarah Palin possesses George W. Bush’s worst quality… a person of deep conviction who is not a deep thinker.

They have a point of view based on limited information and they’re going to “fight for it” regardless of what other information might come into play. They call it conviction, but I call it shallowness.

What we saw in the Couric interview was someone who could only go one question deep on a topic. Once Couric asked the second question, Palin was unable to form a new thought on her own. OUCH!!"

This was the most insightful summation I've read in anything posted about Sarah Palin. Now you ask-are Palin's interviews with Couric helping her? Yes, they're helping her-helping her get on SNL on a weekly basis!!!!

frank from florida   September 30th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

yes they are jack, they are helping her right back to alaska where she need to be so she can see russia everyday

Victoria Akselsen   September 30th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

NO! Katie Couric's interviews are KILLING Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin is a GIFT to the Obama campaign at this point. As a believer in the democratic process, however, I wish McCain has chosen a competent running mate so that there would be a CHOICE in whom to vote for. Palin, before you embarras yourself any further, make things worse for women and Americans everywhere, STEP THE HECK DOWN. Bow out gracefully.
Victoria

Mari Fernandez, Salt Lake City, Utah   September 30th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

No, Jack, its not helping. The interview Palin and McCain did together with Katie Couric looked like she was a 'little girl' next to her Daddy. McCain even got defensive when Couric asked Palin 'if she had learned anything' from her gaffe on Pakistan. McCain said "its gotcha journalism" and Couric, said "the question was asked by a voter".

Good grief! I do not agree with Palin's politics, nor her parenting 'style' (a mother of an infant, especially one with special needs, is needed at home, call me old fashion). I do not agree with her, at all. And I believe that everyone including conservative journalist calling for her to step-down is right!

As a former-Republican, now Independent, I can tell you that I have lost ALL respect for McCain. His choice of a running mate clearly was about boosting his campaign........NOT about what IS best for our Nation.

Elizabeth   September 30th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

No Jack they are not. The scary thing is that she is going off to one of McCain’s many homes to practice for the debate – to most this reads – “I’ll be out of town with my handlers ~ they’ll be teaching me what to say, how to respond, my facial expression and of course my pretty smile When can I practice how to wave? Can I do it now? Can I? ”

Karen - TN   September 30th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Jack, you know the old saying: Any publicity is good publicity. I've never seen a case of someone with less to offer getting such a huge following, so it must be true.

Marianne from West Palm Beach, FL   September 30th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Of course not, this is starting to look more and more like an ex trying to show that she's "changed" and "different" – but really, it just looks desperate. I'm tired of cringing while I watch her try to form an intelligent sentence.

Joanne   September 30th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

This scares the heck out of me to think this person will represent the United States even if she never has to assume the role of the presidency. What must other countries think if this is the best we can do?

g.k.   September 30th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

What they are doing is – keeping her in the limelight. Since she is an unknown entity, this gives her much needed publicity. Whether it helps her or not, remains to be seen, but it does give us the American public, much comedy material. Good laughs ain't cheap, you know.

Rob, San Antonio, TX   September 30th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Until she can answer questions with real information and not ramble, she's better off staying quiet. But if a VP candidate has to keep quiet, then what are they worth?

Sandra --Cordell, Oklahoma   September 30th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

This is a very silly question, Jack. A first for you. If you are talking about intelligient people, Yes it hurts her....I know 20 yr. old college kids that could handle it better.

Linda/San Diego   September 30th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Give her all the rope she needs...have you noticed how nervous McCain looks whenever she starts to talk...a gotcha moment!

Precious Coker   September 30th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Oh!! With granpa sitting next to her?

That was pathetic. McCain should be ashamed of himself. He described a simple question from an ordinary American citizen(voter)
as "gotcha" question.

I wonder, was McCain looking for a running mate or a playmate?

Catherine Rhee   September 30th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Sarah Palin is absolutely NOT qualified to run this country. It scares me that there is a chance this woman maybe President of the United States. As painful as it is, I think it is extremely important that she continues to do these interviews so that the entire country can continue to see how unfit she is to be President. I am a registered Republican but I am voting for Obama.

Debbie from Blairs, VA   September 30th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Must you ask the obvious? With each appearance, voters' confidence in her weakens even more.

Deb   September 30th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Although the interviews I have seen so far are hilarious, pathetic and scary at the same time, I think they may help her in some bizarre way. Our expectation of her performance has lowered to such an extent that even if she can complete a coherent sentence during her debate, it will amount to her victory.

Rida   September 30th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

If Palin had any love for this country she would step aside and not run at all, forget the interviews SHE SHOULD QUIT. McCain was concerned with getting votes and not concerned for our country when he chose her, and because of this he has handed over the presidency to the antichrist. His pride got in the way of the reason why he was running for president.

Glynn Miller Miami,FL   September 30th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

No of course not. She was doing just fine when she was out the media's spotlight. Now shes doing interviews with John McCain to make sure she doesnt say anything stupid and you want me to believe she is ready to be my country's VP or even President. Give me a break. The United States is going to fall like a ton of bricks if the voters dont make better decisions of who the choose to run this country. IM SCARED!

Pliny - St. Louis, MO   September 30th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Palin is not helping her chances by engaging a hostile press. She is no less vapid and ignorent of good public policy than McCain, Obama, or Biden, but making her lack of qualifications more visible can't help. McCain has his war hero status to hide behind and the Obama\Biden team will get a pass from media cheerleaders, but Palin has nothing to look forward to except public mocking.

Pliny,
St. Louis

Chuck K   September 30th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Jack,
So long as she dose not say anything, holds her breath for more than 10 minutes, shoots her self in the head six times,She will have my vote!

Donna, Cincinnati, OH   September 30th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

The only thing her interviews are doing is helping her back home to Alaska so she can watch the Russians from her back yard and improve her foreign policy experience. I am deeply concerned about this country's future if John McCain is elected. Until Sarah Palin came onto the scene I was a stauch McCain supporter. Now not so. Everytime she is interviewed she shows just how unquailified she is and makes me question Senator McCain's judgement.

Rich Morgan   September 30th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

If she's trying to demonstrate that she shouldn't hold ANY public office, she's helping herself immensely. Otherwise, no, of course not. She's an insult, not only to the the intelligence of every American citizen, but to the intelligence of all the world's foreign leaders.

Brian Becker   September 30th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Short answer: No!

Although she didn't make any huge gaffes with her latest interview along side Senator McCain, it reminded me of a parent / teacher conference after his daughter failed a test, and it was laughable in that regard. If she needs hand holding to even answer legitimate questions, she shouldn't be insulting the American people with her presence on the ticket.

Franki Rhea-Pelham   September 30th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

While Palin has done wonders for our state.. she is not qualified to run as VP. Her interviews make her look like a political weakling.. and believe me, she is as cutthroat as they come, politically. Couric makes her look like a mental midget. But keeping her hidden from public view and scrutiny is plain idiotic of McCain....but then idiotic covers McCain totally.....If Palin wants a political future higher than our governor, she needs to learn how to give an honest answer and go back to being the Alaska Baracuda we like here in the last frontier

Lil-Coeur d' Alene Idaho   September 30th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

The more she talks, the more she helps Obama. But my question is this, Why is it politically incorrect to mention the amount of time she spends with her special needs infant? That child will undoubtedly be properly cared for, but not by his MOTHER.

Mark in Charleston, South Carolina   September 30th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Yes – the interviews are helping her realize her limitations. Then again, I believe she knew her limitations long ago and failed to honestly address them. As the song goes "I'll get on my knees and pray we don't get fooled again".

Dionete   September 30th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

Helpful, as in explaining to the world exactly why an evangelical should NEVER be in office? Sure, that’s helping.

Jessica (FT WORTH, TX)   September 30th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

It's keeping her in the spotlight...that's it. She needs to do more interviews to keep up her ratings, though.

Heather   September 30th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

The unfortunate reality of the situation is that she doesn't seem to be hurting their campaign all that much with these interviews and that above all is the most terrifying part. I will have lost all faith in the American public if McCain and Palin get into the White House. Wake up America, duty calls, do your research, listen to the candidates and make the smart choice. Do not choose because a candidate is good looking, or charming, or likeable. Choose a candidate that is capable, and has the best interest of these United States in mind.

Jeff DuShane, Flint, MI   September 30th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

The latest interview was surreal. I mean really Jack, is McCain going to stand next to her and hold her hand at the debate Thursday? If he doesn't have the confidence to let her speak in public, how can he honestly say she is the best choice for VP?

Jeff DuShane

Rubin from St. Louis   September 30th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Yes. The interviews have helped lower expectations for her debate with Joe Biden.

bobby in florida   September 30th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Jack; I watched the interview she had with Katie couric; McCain was there coaching her; it was like watching Dum and Dummer.

thomas , michigan   September 30th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Yes, Jack, only to the extent that voters will just get used to the inanity. If she's redeemable as a candidate, it will show in the debate.

Tiffaney   September 30th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

How dare Palin say "I remember Biden's speeches from when I was like 12." How can she call him old when McCain is 72? It is pathetic that McCain had to go do an additional interview with Katie Couric to redeem their campaign. It looks like father protecting daughter. He wouldn't even let her speak for herself. Katie Couric asked "Are you sorry that you said that" (about answering the Grad student's question) McCain stepped in and said "How can you ask her if she's sorry?" The grad student is a voter, how dare the McCain/Palin campaign blame it on journalism. Truth is...you can't protect her. They don't agree on all issues and they can only cover it up so much.

Kimberly   September 30th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Absolutely NOT!!! She is not helping her chances, however, she is finally opening the eyes of her own party, as well as, of the constituants in regard to clearly being out of her league and the negligent decision of John McCain to nominate her. During one of her interviews she mentioned how scary it would be to see someone like Biden be elected. Well personally, I think she is the scariest of all four candidates. God help this nation is they should be blessed enough to take office come January.

Dave   September 30th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

You are right Cafferty...the interview did not answer the question...but I believe that you would have done a worse job than her. Quit while you still can.

Mike, Cleveland, Ohio   September 30th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

As far as politics go...you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Dave   September 30th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

She has no choice but to try. Imagine if she ceased doing these interviews, essentially giving up. The resulting speculation would, and I know this is hard to believe, be even more negative. Besides, the resulting comedy is the most entertaining thing around now days ;-)

McShame pick a women not for the of the country , but for the good of his interest . That goes to show those Republicans will do anything to win . Can you imagine Sarah Palin as President if something happens to McShame. That is one scary thought.

Justin, Oregon   September 30th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

Since she and McCain now accuse *voters* of engaging in "Gotcha journalism" it probably doesn't matter who asks the questions.

Allan Gusmao   September 30th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

someone sent me this text. Please read it.

I'm against the $85 BILLION bailout of AIG. Instead, I'm in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a 'We Deserve It' dividend. To make the math simple, let's assume there are 200,000,000 bona fide U.S. citizens, aged 18+.
Our population is about 301 million counting every man, woman and child. So, 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up. Now, divide 200 million, 18+ adults into $85 billion – that equals $425,000.00 each! Yes, my plan is to give that $425,000 to every adult as a 'We Deserve It' dividend.
Of course, it would NOT be tax free. So, let's assume a tax rate of 30%. Everyone would pay $127,500.00 in taxes. That sends $25.5 billion right back to Uncle Sam! It also means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket. A husband and wife would have $595,000.00!
What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00?

* Pay off your mortgage – housing crisis solved.
* Repay college loans – what a great boost to new grads.
* Put away money for college – it'll really be there.
* Save in a bank – create money to loan to entrepreneurs.
* Buy a new car – create jobs .
* Invest in the market – capital drives growth.
* Pay for your parent's medical insurance – health care improves.
* Enable deadbeat parents to come clean – or else.

Remember this is for every adult U.S. citizen, 18 and older (including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehmann Brothers and every other company that is cutting back) and of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces.
If we're going to re-distribute wealth let's really do it! Instead of trickling out a puny $1,000.00 'economic incentive'.
If we're going to do an $85 billion bailout, let's bail out every adult U.S. citizen!
As for AIG – liquidate it.

* Sell off its parts.
* Let American General go back to being American General.
* Sell off the real estate.
* Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.

We deserve the money and AIG doesn't. Sure it's a crazy idea, but can you imagine the coast-to-coast block party?!
How do you spell Economic Boom? W-e D-e-s-e-r-v-e I-t d-i-v-i-d-e-n-d! I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion 'We Deserve It' dividend more than do the 'geniuses' at AIG or in Washington, D.C..
And remember, my plan only really costs $59.5 billion because $25.5 billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam. Good idea? I think so.

Jack, After you vote for BO retirement might not be a bad thing. I've watched you for awhile and you are 62 it might just be time to go fishing.

Doris/St. Louis, MO   September 30th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Sarah Palin's continued interviews with Katie Couric dosen't help her at all, however, it helps the public to learn just how critically unqualified this woman is to hold any office, it certainly clears the lipstick from the pit-bull, pig or whatever terminology she wishes to use to define herself. If Obama loses the election, WE ARE ALL IN TROUBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Katrisha, Austin TX   September 30th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Sara Palin hurts McCain every time she opens her mouth. If they win than it proves Americans are dumber than I thought. I could have answered those question better than her. I would hate to see someone who is as educated as I am in economics , world history, and foreign affairs be the 2nd most powerful person in our government. I don’t belong in politics and neither does she.

mrsntc Houston   September 30th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

I think the Couric interviews just are allowing John McCain to puff up his feathers in defense of "the little lady from Alaska". She says nothing of substance.

Mickie in California   September 30th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

No, the interviews between Palin and Couric aren't helping Sarah Palin unless it means sending her home to Alaska sooner than later. Her latest, with John McCain beside her, still didn't keep her from making an oh-oh- when she said she didn't know Joe Biden but had heard of him since about 2nd grade. Can you just imagine what an unscripted Palin would be like in Washington?

Jerry.. south carolina   September 30th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

I would feel sorry for Sarah, except that she accepted the offer to run on McCain's ticket knowing very well that she is totally unqualified. I am only hoping someone...her...John ..others will recognize how ridiculous his campaign is looking as she becomes more and more "exposed" and that she will step down soon...."for personal reasons". Then maybe he can get Romney to join the team and lend some credibility to John;s "vast " knowledge of economic issues. Increasingly, it is beoming clearer every day that McCain is nothing but a politician like all the rest.YUK!

Sue/PA   September 30th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Jack,

No, they are not helping her. Palin is just reinforcing McCains "do anything to win, lack of judgement" mentality. Last night McCain and Palin looked like "Daddy protecting his daughter from the school principal." Palin was McCains political gimmick, a political pander. I almost feel sorry for her, "almost" being the operative word.

Will   September 30th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

No, of course not, and they're hurting Sen. McCain. Voters are too concerned about the economy and the financial system right now to support a candidate (that's one 72-year-old heartbeat away from the presidency) and one who doesn't even come close to remotely understanding the economic ramifications of failed banks, the mortgage crisis, or the proposed 'bailout'. Between her inability to answer intelligently and McCain's judgment that 'the fundamentals of our economy are strong', it's not wonder Sen. Obama's poll numbers have jumped past McCain and broken the dead heat.

Jason - Orlando   September 30th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Jack, I don't have any examples of how it's helping her but I'll find some and bring them to ya!

Jane from Georgia   September 30th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

I would really have to question a persons' sanity if they can truthfully say Mrs. Palin's interview with Katie Couric helped her in any way.
I can't believe John McCain still has her on the ticket after that
nonsense.

Jackie in Dallas   September 30th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

I only saw the first one; it was so painful, I couldn't make myself watch the second one.

While I'm sure she is a nice enough hockey mom and probably a good neighbor (as long as you don't make her mad), she is woefully lacking in knowledge that we expect from a candidate for federal public office at any level. I know high school students with a better understanding of world affairs. And if she is having this much difficulty with a soft reporter like Katie Couric, I cannot imagine what a true political analyst/reporter could do to her. McCain did her no favors in putting her in a position where she is so obviously in over her head.

However, she will make a great fall guy for a failed campaign.

pete in hamilton ont   September 30th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

ms palin has invented her own language, it is "repulicanese", it is filled with nonsense and gibberish which only a very few can comprehend.

Wayne from Ontario Canada   September 30th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

WOW couldn't beleive my ears, she answered some of the questions as if she was on a beauty pageant, oh that's right she was on a beauty pagant. Come on folks, is this for real. This woman is a heart beat away from becoming the President of the USA. And I will bet that's a one in five chance, given McCain's age.

Gina from Ohio   September 30th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

I'd bet Sarah Palin voted for Mike Huckabee in the Alaska caucus because she knows nothing about John McCain's policy positions. Even after weeks of coaching, her only topics of interest are religion, guns and gas.

Ann from Atlanta, TX   September 30th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

No! The only person she's helping is Obama.

mel from Ohio   September 30th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

In a word-NO!! Additionally, doing these interviews along with a glaring, uncomfortable John McCain makes matters even worse. It appears that her Dad didn't trust her to answer appropriately so he came along to kick her or squirm in his seat if she goes off base. What a joke and such poor judgement by McCain to select her in the first place.

Jolly Potter, NY   September 30th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Hey Jack,

do you think Tina Fey might show up to the debate on Thursday instead ? Will we be able to tell the difference ? I doubt it.

Barbara   September 30th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

They're hurting her, but they're surely helping the American voters. I can't imagine she would sway any undecideds to vote for the McCain/Palin ticket. Furthermore, it highlights the poor judgment of McCain and his campaign. Incidentally, since she thought Joe Biden's age was such a hoot, has anyone told her the age of her running mate?

Clermont, FL

M Gallo   September 30th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

I would like to be reassured that they are not helping her, but I don't think that's true. Just look at how many people are still gushing about her looks, her great family, and what a great addition she is to McCain's ticket. This woman really believes she's VP material. Even worse, Mc Cain thinks so too!!! It's like watching a movie where all the inmates are running the mental institution. Katie Couric should get some kind of award for keeping a straight face throughout that interview. I would give money to see you interview Palin.

Patrick, Odenville, Al.   September 30th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Jack,
Sarah Palin is doing both her family and this great country a dishonor when she continues to place herself in these interviews. She is like a cubic zirconia. She has the appearance of a diamond but once placed under a microscope, all of her flaws are left exposed.

Anita   September 30th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

No, the interviews are not helping at all. Those McCain Train riders need to get out the fork, stick it in cause McCain is done.

Talk about being different from Bush, please that is so misleading to the general public. I think we all see that Sarah Palin and Bush are very much indeed alike, they are both morons!!

They're definitely helping Kaite Couric. I had forgotten that she sill had a job at CBS.

Molly Burger   September 30th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

No! In fact, the joint Couric interview with both Palin and McCain made her look even worse. In my opinion, it looked like a desperate spin job by McCain to refute Palin's comments. By the way, why didn't your body language expert analyze McCain's rapid eye movement( blinking) and failure to make eye contact. He should read 11 Ways To Tell If Someone Is Lying.
Thanks, Jack.

Lameck,   September 30th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Oops! From an international point of view, its quite bad for America to field a "Vice Presidential-candidate" to the world who has no sence of understanding and comprehending the question before she gives a logical answer. Curic made it such an elementary level TWICE: "How does that enhance your foreign policy?" I wonder if she took a class anywhere in her schooling called "logical thinking"!!

Les Young Oklahoma   September 30th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

My mother use to tell me sometime its better to keep your mouth shut as not to show your ignorance. One her favorite saying was most people who have to tell how smart they are really not smart. Also if someone has to tell how religious they are also pulling the wool over your eyes. They call a man a empty suit. I guess Palin is a empty dress.

Ted O. (Canada)   September 30th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Palin's interview's with Katie Couric are gaining her sympathy with the simple minded voters, who favourably judge her by such populist criteria as .."She's just a hockey mom", ...She just like the average joe",instead of asking themselves intelligent questions like, Does she have the foreign affairs & economics experience to possibly run the country in a exceptionally challenging time like this?. Unfortunately, my theory has always been that the biggest problem with all American elections, is that a much higher percentage of these intellectually challenged people show up to vote in elections, than the intelligent ones, where there is more voter apathy, so once again the world media may be asking the question...How could so many people have been so STUPID??

Karl in CA   September 30th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

No, she's showing that she hasn't even watched the 6:00 news in years or she would do better. Of course with John McCain flipping and flopping on ever topic maybe she's confused as to what today's policy is specifically. The debate on Thursday should be the final straw. on this camel's back.

C in Belen, New Mexico   September 30th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Andrea Kassner   September 30th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Sarah Palin is showing her inexperience even with all her mad lines and bluster. Katie Couric is showing Sarah how unprepared and illogical Sarah is. How hard that must be, to look at yourself in a TV clip and know the middle class knows more than the Alaskan governor. I'm sorry Alaska.

Michael from California   September 30th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Governor Palin's interviews with anyone are not doing her much good, but the question is how many people are seeing these interviews. It is appearant from watching these interviews, that she is woefully unprepared to be a leader of this country (eithere VP or the big chair), but the republican base keeps pushing her as qualified.

What I would like someone in the media to question, is the statment that she WILL be ready. What does that mean, does she need more training, how will she be ready. That statement should scare the bejeebers out of anyone who hears it.

glenn   September 30th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

No. It's not helping her at all. But, I do have a little respect for McCain now. He knows that he allowed his strategist to back him into a corner that he shouldn't be in. Rather than dumping her, he is being a man and sticking with her. If the Repulicans dump her now, they would be destroying a family. They are already parading her children and the poor boyfriend around un-necessarly. The Republicans owe it to the Palin family to allow her to continue running as VP. Although it's helping my party, the Dems, big time, I still fill sorry for the Palin family.

Sean   September 30th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

C. McKiney. Pennsauken, NJ   September 30th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

It seems as if Ms. Palin need to get out more. John McCain keeps such tight reins on her. She's scared to death of him. Did you see him come to her defense on Katie's interview. Like a daddy protecting the honor of his daughter. And oh – did you catch him LOOKING AT Sarah when she was speaking? Looking at and smiling at? Can you be a more obvious racist?

She is helping us Democrats A LOT !!

Cyndy, Kissimmee, Florida   September 30th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Jack,
What astounded me on the interview, last night, is McCain' answer to Katie's question on Pakistan. He told her that it didn't really matter, that there wasn't any press there–hello, there was a video on TV–his total answer was besides there wasn't any press there, that it was just ONE VOTER that it pertained to. What world is he from? How do people get elected–gee, could it be from voters? That one voter answer will cost him quite a bit more than just ONE VOTE. I think that he has caught that dreaded disease–the Sarah Palinitis–open mouth, and insert foot, then try to make it good again!

C. Farrell, Houston, Tx   September 30th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

If Palin was interviewing for a job with Katie Couric she's not helping her chances. It appears to me Katie Couric has taken on John McCain's lack of responsibility of doing the job he should have done on day one.

Frank from Peterborough   September 30th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

It seems pretty clear that Palin is basically harmless as these interviews have pretty much confirmed. America would have more reason to be concerned if she had a brain then she would be dangerous.

Ernest   September 30th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

She has singlehandedly elevated Tina Fey career, I would not be surprise if she is making 20 million a movie next year, with a Oscar in a movie, she' s so good. She should give Palin some money for she probably won't have a job after this.

Katie is a SNOB for asking questions that Palin should know but didn't have the intelligence to answer? Come on – get real! If you truly believe that then you are one of those who still thinks there are weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. When will you people admit that Palin is the poorest excuse for a VP nominee to ever grace this planet? Anytime the woman opens her mouth it brings forth stupidity.

I am a soccer mom – an intelligent one!! I don't need Palin embarrassing me!

This is what you get when you try to bring down the accomplishments of Obama who worked his way through Harvard and graduated in the top of his class with someone who has had everything given to them including their (talking points and thought processes via Rove, McCain etc...)

Republicans are still trying to blame the reporters for Palin's ineptness but the more she talks unscripted the more ridiculous she and those that try to defend many of the statments that she's made, appear.

Marieth, Chicago   September 30th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

SHE'S CERTAINLY HELPING THE DEMOCRATS. THE ENTERTAINMENT FACTOR IS PRETTY COOL, TOO.

Peter Fern Park, Fla.   September 30th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

It's a 99% certainty that Sarah Palin will not become VP. What this has done for her has given her the opportunity to write a book about her experiences on the campaign. Imagine the sales!

Vaughn Orlando, FL   September 30th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

She isn't helping herself or her party, But the American Public is sure getting a heck of an education on the merits of "Maverick" decision making.

Larry Houston, Texas   September 30th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

They are hurting her in a very bad way. She needs to come up with some sort of excuse to "drop out" so he can select someone else with some sense of knowledge of the world, at least some sense.

Jennifer W (Burlington, IA)   September 30th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Jack,
It's just not helping her. She royally messed up the first one then has McCain come in with her to be her protector to try and fool the American people into believing that it's all the media's fault. Shame on them! You can't blame others for your own mistake. And who is McCain fooling anyway?! He made it appear as if he was her father there to make it all better. When will the insanity end?!

Mary - PA   September 30th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Every word that comes out of Sarah Palin's mouth makes her look more clueless and McCain looks more reckless. We can all agree we need more women in politics. Hopefully in November we can also all agree we need leaders who are competent and qualified for the offices they seek.

Why do you think that John McCain has her in seclusion.? It is too late to dump her, so he is stuck with her for worse, or worser. He would be seen as incompedent for all of those who know that he made a gigantic mistake, and that he did it as a stunt to get Hillarys voters. Hillary's votes aren't as dumb as he is.

Jack, In my opinion Palin is not helping herself in this followup interviews with Couric. Yesterday, It appeared that she brought her older brother back to a conflict she had lost a few days before. It appeared to me that McCain was there to shield her from any difficult questions.

But the real problem to me is that, Mrs. Palin has difficulty putting together a proper and complete sentence.

Eric, Settle, WA   September 30th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Every word that comes out of Sarah Palin’s mouth makes her look more clueless and McCain looks more reckless. We can all agree we need more women in politics. Hopefully in November we can also all agree we need leaders who are competent and qualified for the offices they seek.

Carol Christine - CT   September 30th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

It certainly keeps the media's attention. You are going to TUNE in just to look for any and all mis-steps that she might have arn't cha? As for curic – what a dumb blonde ! She's looking to HOLD on to her job! She had her 15 minutes. Time will tell who's on FIRST.

Beartrack Truckee,CA   September 30th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

At first it appeared that Palin was just some sort of distraction, and an attempt to bring over the Hillary folks. Now it seems that this really is what McCain's judgement is about. Her "interviews" with Gibson and now Couric have been more than a joke, they are an embarrassment to all women, all Republicans, and even to the rest of us. To think that McCain thought we would all fall for this.-Turn out the lights, this party will be over Thursday night.

Caryn, Washington DC   September 30th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Katie Couric's interview is helping Sarah Palin set the bar so low for the debate that Americans will be impressed if she is able to talk in coherent and complete sentences...well maybe just complete sentences.

duxsi   September 30th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Oh Jack, she's doing just fine!!!
Didn't you hear, the Republicans made the awful mistake of "over preparing" her for these very difficult interviews.

Don't be surprised if she shows up for Thursdays debate in a Burka, with a bad cold... sounding suspiciously like Karl Rove!!

Eric, Seattle, WA   September 30th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Tim Quesnel   September 30th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

As a Canadian I find this somewhat humorous, the questions clearly went over her head. Mccain shouldnt be there to dig her out of the mistakes she makes. I wouldnt want her running my country.

Jinny Lee   September 30th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

The question should be: Are Couric's interviews with Palin helping her? Just a note: Palin is beyond help.

Jack,

It gets more and more scary, each and everytime. It is painfully obvious Gov. Palin can't talk on her own. The rollout of Sen. McCain as her mouthpiece, Is just plain insulting. As the hockey teams employ an enforcer. She took to McCain. If she were able to respond on her own, he should have let her. His "gotcha journalism" point was both comical and frightening at the same time. I am certain the Dems were loving it. He would have been wiser to place the Gov. on his lap, and officially announce: The Edgar Bergen / Charlie McCarthy revue is here. We will answer all your questions. Heaven help us.

I think she should stick with Sean Hannity. He asks easier questions like, "what's your favorite sport?" or "are you a good person?"

King Ellis   September 30th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

What specifically are the fixes for the economy from both presidential candidates?
Can you get these questions out on a poll or a question to them? You have integrity and fairness in your quest to find the truth.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Diane - PA   September 30th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

In the recent interview with Katie Couric, Sarah used her "lifeline" – Grandpa McCain. He didn't even help her to look half intelligent.

Mike Smith, New Orleans LA   September 30th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

I actually think Palin is helping herself and McCain by doing as many interviews as possible. There will always be a certain percentage of voters who vote for stupid or ridiculous reasons. In this decade the Republicans figured out how to win those voters, and they're doing it again with Sarah Palin. A vote is a vote whether it comes from ignorance or reasoning. She will surely capture the majority of the ignorant.

Max   September 30th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

What chances Jack? I never knew she had any. From day one she has been paraded around by the Republican elite as if she was its new found love. As time passed they realized as many Americans have that she is just what she describes herself as "A hockey mom with lipstick."

Some conservatives have boldly stepped to the forefront and asked that she be removed from the ticket. But Ms. Sanchez, the Republican strategist ,says that they are just the mainstream intellectuals of the Republican Party not the conservative base.

The last time I looked "intellectual" was defined as "rational rather than emotional" or "having superior intelligence." I hope that the conservative base realize what Ms. Sanchez has defined them as and join the intellectuals who long ago realized that Sarah Palin is not what America needs to potentially lead them for the next four years.

This is a perfect example of why America freedom and democracy are great. It also demonstrated the medias role in this process. Sara Palin has been exposed and it is apparent that she is not qualified. We now need to hope that the American people and the McCain campaign can swallow some pride and have her step down. Lets not be stubborn and make our country suffer.

mike_in_connecticut   September 30th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

The interviews with Katie Couric are helping Sarah Palin look like the the foreign policy amateur she is. She may not be able to see Russia from where she is standing, but I can sure see political oblivion from what she is saying.

J L   September 30th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

I think Palin's interviews, just the 2 we've seen, prove she is qualified to continue what we now have in the white house...people with the IQ of a talking house plant.

Terry from North Carolina   September 30th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

Jack
With the exception of you and Wolf, who else bothers to watch Katie Couric ?

claver, kgn-Jamaica   September 30th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

I had initally thought that the comment equating foreign policy experience with the ability to 'see' Russia from Alaska was just the media trying to paint her in a bad light.......THEN I heard her say it herself to Katie Couric. I was speechless with disbelief. And the rest of the incoherent stuff she was spewing. JEEZ.

If she ends up being the Second Most Powerful person in America (or GOD forbid the 1st) then the John McCains argument about putting country first would be exposed for the shameless Politics/Self First that it really was!!

sandra/canada   September 30th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

Dear Jack: Would it help if all of us in the free world that isn't America got down on our collective knees and begged America not to put Sarah Palin within reach of the Presidency? We're not trying to be pushy. It's just that we have spent the last eight years sleeping with one eye open. We're tired.

Ryan -Galesburg, IL   September 30th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

No, and neither is bringing "daddy" along to help her through it. The interviews are, on the other hand, helping us to see what a profoundly poor choice McCain make in bringing her into this election, and how little regard he has for our governing process.

Brian from Eagle River, Alaska   September 30th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Every time Palin does an interview or gets quoted on the nightly news, her position gets stronger. Let’s face it, people are lemmings and they will follow the person (or people) that are most recognizable. As Palin becomes more of a public figure, her influence on the public perception grows larger.

Robin, Henderson, NV   September 30th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Jack

First of all she lets get it out in the open, she is mighty clueless. The first Interview she was inarguable incoherent, the second interview she had daddy McCain there making excuses. Why don't Sara just excuse herself and save the public the shame that we feel when we hear her spew her gunk. Alaska huh? Stevens is crook, Palin is clueless, hmmmm both republicans. oy veh

Tom, Avon, Maine, The Heart of Democracy   September 30th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

If by her you mean Couric, yes they have getting all kinds of airtime. And it must be obvious to McCain that she is a better choice for VP.

Keith   September 30th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Jack, yes, her interviews are definitely helping her prove to her health insurer that she is absolutely qualified as a paranoid schizophrenic and should be exempt from paying her co-pay for her pills.

Joyce   September 30th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

No the interviews have helped her. In their response to the media, she has played the victim card. Those big bad elitist are out to get her. Now if Biden takes her on, in even a reasonable manner, she will again be the victim of those big bad elitist dems. And guess what a large portion of the populace will believe it. I believe that if you play in the garden you have to be willing to take the falls but the McCain campaign has played every single card they can find, sexism, elitism, gotcha reporters–let's just wait till after the debates and see what card they play.

Freda from Chicago   September 30th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

It should have helped her to realize how little she really knows and to accept the fact that John McCain used her. After the interview with Katie Couric, she should have immediately gone to the airport to return to Alaska, Alaska, Alaska.

Keith   September 30th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Alex perth amboy NJ   September 30th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Charlie (Bethpage, NY)   September 30th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

If Palin were smart (haha, that's funny) she'd crawl under a rock and hide until Election Day. With each interview, she digs herself and the McCain camp deeper and deeper. But after 2000 and 2004, anything can happen...I don't have much faith in the American people anymore when it comes to voting and seeing the obvious.

Robert Ox. Augusta Ga.   September 30th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

I am a Obama supporter though I have a lot of respect for Palin and Mcain and do not like to see anybody piled on for making a speaking error or just being ignorant at the moment in regards to a question. I also feel that Mcain should stay out of here interviews.

Maybe no one else will talk with Palin. If they say the wrong thing, they get kicked off the plane. If they ask tough questions, they're called "meanies." These interviews tell us a lot about Palin, which we'd never know if we only relied on the McCain Spin Machine, but they also show us a side to Katie Couric I've never seen before. How her head hasn't exploded from listening to Palin's nonsense is beyond me. Way to go, Katie!

Debbie H., South Bend, Indiana   September 30th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

I hope she doesn’t do any more interviews. I don’t know how many more times I can stand hearing her use the words, “John McCain” and “maverick” in the same sentence. The description of McCain as “the maverick of the Senate” is becoming so overused and tired that even the parodies aren’t funny any more and it just sounds stupid coming out of Gov. Palin’s mouth. Can we at least get her a thesaurus?

Deirdre   September 30th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

"by CONTINUING to do interviews with Katie"? No. But the devil made her do it, and she continues to go along with his plan. Shame on McCain for ruining this woman's reputation, and shame on her for not waiting on a devine answer as to if she should put herself and her family in the limelight to become something she isn't qualified to be. I say all women should rebel against McCain for being a USER and a LOSER!

DScott in Seattle   September 30th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

The Couric interviews are indeed helping Sarah Palin.
1) Helping her display the true meaning of "idiocy on parade"
2) Helping her get home to her beloved Alaska sooner... and it can't be soon enough.
3) Helping her by lowering ANY expectations that anyone may have of her in the future.

Lene'   September 30th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

I don't think it matters at this point if she continues to do interviews with Katie Couric. The damage is already done. I think having John McCain there defending her gaffes only makes her look even more superficial.

Josh in Sylvania, Ohio   September 30th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

No, Because these interviews have pretty much shown the truth about Palin and is that she shouldn't be anywhere near the White House. Jack, this woman didn't even know the Bush doctine of preemptive strike or that she claims she can see Russia out of her backyard. Seeing her interview with Katie Couric, I can't help but feel nothing but pity for this woman since she is nowhere ready to lead unless you count photo ops at the UN as experience.

Debbie, Florida   September 30th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

Jack,

As a woman, I was ready to "overlook" the shocky performance Sarah Palin gave in her first interview with Katie Couric. However, after the second interview, I now know that what we see is what we get - a dippy, well below-average candidate who is a heartbeat away from the highest office in our country. She should step down.

wally Ruehmann las vegas nv   September 30th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

iam embarrassed for her children, they have to be so confused with this whole thing. what are they going to tell there friend's. you know they get saturday nite live in Alaska, it may be a week behind but they get it.. the time has come for her to put family first say well it didn't work out and do a exit stage left..........

Darla/Colorado   September 30th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

I think she has already blown her chances, but that is irrelevant, right now.........The American people need a chance to hear and see exactly what they are going to get if McCain is elected............. McCain's erratic behavior over the last 2 weeks and Palin's 'blond moments' are a 'heads up' to the American people. Let's pay attention before it's too late! The choice for a McCain/Palin ticket is probably the only one that will ever be worse then the Bush/Cheney choice.

Connie   September 30th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

Marjorie from Canada   September 30th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

No... but actually we feel sorry for her. She should have never been placed in this predictament. She is totally unqualified, which is a reflection on John McCain not Sarah Palin. I believe she took this on with the best of intentions and an honest heart – the problem is that it was offered to her with "dishonest" intentions. She is being used by McCain and women should be outraged.

Rebecca from Milford, VA   September 30th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Of course they are helping. They are lowering the expectaions for the debate. If she can string together a coherent sentence on Thursday, she will be acclaimed the winner. How utterly sad for our country!!!

Tom Weaver - Pittsburgh PA   September 30th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

The interviews only point out her shortcomings. Now she brings John McCain to answer for her. What's next – Sarah Palin brings her mom?

Holly in Knightdale, NC   September 30th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

She's not helping her chances towards anything unless she's actually trying to just return to hockey life!

I don't even think she'll show up on Thursday for the debate...McCain will probably do the speaking for her so that there isn't as much damage control the next day!

Curt W   September 30th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

The second interview was helpful in that she looked more intelligent and less cute. It was not helpful for Senator McCain to be there holding her hand.

Brad, Florida   September 30th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Thank God we did not have our current campaign system and media coverage when Lincoln ran for President. The media would have loved Douglas because he wanted to talk to them all the time while Lincoln did VERY little campaigning if any at all. We would have had President Douglas presiding over the Civil War.

blamegame, TX   September 30th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Palin's interviews reveal that she is a "major" threat to our National Security if she becomes VP.

Rex in Portland, Ore.   September 30th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Hard to spin this one, eh, Rove?

Tony from Jersey City   September 30th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

In my world, the first interview would have been enough to get a hot-dog vendor fired. In short, no, these interviews are helping no one, least of all the poor Mrs. Palin. However, it seems the more outlandish the spin, the happier the media is to deliver it, so what I first mistook to be a debilitating lack of communication skills is actually just "Gotcha" journalism. Thanks for clearing that up. The absurdity that McCain is willing to shill in this campaign was amusing at first, but now has become genuinely disconcerting.

Alan Newman   September 30th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Mr. Cafferty–you were so right about the Palin interview–she is a laughingstock. vide Tina Fey's SNL parody where she got a big laugh with Palins answer to the question about the bailout–quoting verbatim from what Palin actually said. Picking her as the VP candidate was insulting to women, the American voter, and even to Republican politicians who actually would be worthy of the job. Worst of all it places the nation in real danger should, God forbid, McCain get elected and Palin be a heartbeat way from the Presidency.

karen-phoenix   September 30th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

No! AND she scares me to death!!! McCain is a cheat and a lier and now we have this as his running mate!!! God help America and BLESS Obama/Biden!!! If McCain gets in what country can I run away too!!!!

Antonio David, Nashville   September 30th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Yes, of course! She's helping the republican party prove that if you just LIE hard enough, it's possible to make anybody president! Hard to believe McCain is putting 'Country First' when in the event of his death, he wants to leave the country in the hands of Sarah Palin. I guess seeing Russia from your window has to count for something!

Michelle, Greenville, SC   September 30th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Couric is shining light on reality, lipstick and all. We are grateful to CBS for snaring this interview but I suspect they were hand selected by the McCain camp. They underestimated Katie Couric who may well be the new Tim Russert. Kindess in asking the obvious allowed the truth to flow from Palin. No shouting. No smirking. Just stunned disbelief at the answers. Would be funny on SNL if it were not word for word.

Sajid Parvez of NY   September 30th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

It is helping Obama-Biden ticket since Sarah Palin is not comfortable to face any media by herself at all. Senator McCain acted as her father in the latest interview with Katie Couric and it gives a signal to american people what experience Sarah Palin has! I need to ask a question to senator McCain: Was there not a better candidate in republican party who could face media him/herself and answer questions to american people? I guess not.

Marilyn from Louisiana   September 30th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

No. If I were Palin and I sat and reviewed the interview with Katie Couric, I would tell McCain.....NO, THANK YOU. These interviews showed the American People she was not quailified to be VP.

RKing   September 30th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

They are not helping her and according to a news program I saw a few days ago the actuarial figure of her becoming President is one in five. Maybe it's better the interviews aren't helping.

Colleen, Weddington, North Carolina   September 30th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

Gia in Los Angeles, CA   September 30th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

I think it's helping to lower expectations for her on Thursday's debates. Playing the game of expectations, she's bound to do "better than expected" and, therefore, no matter how well Biden does, the Republicans will declare that Palin won the debate!

Sam   September 30th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

it is a big fiasco, she should step down. I this one of McCains "good" judgement. He has been a blunder.

Tom Weaver - Pittsburgh PA   September 30th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

No, the interviews are going badly. I have another question. Will John McCain be at her side during the debate on Thursday?

Candy West Virginia   September 30th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

Besides a recent root canal that I had nothing was more painful. She should not have subjected herself to that. Does it help her? The only person or people it helps is Obama and his supporters which I proudly call myself.

Angie in West Kentucky   September 30th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

She just reaffirmed that I am not crazy! I thought maybe I was missing something that made Gov Palin so great! WHEW I am not crazy!
Let's get real here she opens mouth and inserts foot!

Steve - Chicago   September 30th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

No, but disturbingly, the McCain campaign's new double-pronged spin is gaining traction. First, they use Palin's poor performance as somehow reflecting media "gotcha" politics, even though Couric (and others) simply pose questions and wait for Pailin's absurd answers. Second, they're using her emabrassing responses to tell us voters that we should all have "lower expectations" for her future appearances, including the debate. What a perversion. Since when did we start blaming the questioner for stupid answers and applying a curve to grading those seeking our highest elected offices? By the way, has anyone considered the link between Palin's blissfully ignorant answers and the fact that she attended five different colleges before graduating in six years?

Timothy Winkler   September 30th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Darla (Edmonton, Canada)   September 30th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Absolutely not! The saddest thing about this whole campaign is that it has become physically painful to watch both Sarah Palin and John McCain in any forum. You'd think that the Republican campaign would realize that if you have to keep going out and explaining your comments after the fact ... that you might just be saying the wrong thing in the first place!

Dan, Maryland   September 30th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Is this one of those "gotcha" questions Jack? I laugh now when I hear people say "let Sarah be Sarah" because honestly, I think she was being Sarah in those interviews. The speech at the convention was admittedly written by the McCain campaign, these interviews are showing us the real Sarah and it's down right frightening to think she was chosen by John McCain to be in line for the number two spot.

Helen from PA   September 30th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

The interviews are commercials for the bigger show on Thursday evening. Will she speak her own mind or the brainwashing from 'debate camp'? So much to look forward to!!!

Keith   September 30th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Jack, Keith from Austin, TX here. I have decided to adopt Palin's question/answer style. So, to answer your question: "May I mow my face to the banana patch please?"

george harrison   September 30th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Mrs. Palin's answer was not on track; however under the circumstances no one had the answer to that question. With all the experience in the House no one appears to have the answer or solution.

My question is how can our SEC and gov't bodies not be aware of the deteriating financial positions and if they are not down grade the stocks of such institutions. We have all been hood-winked into a false sense of security while others fill their own pockets

dennis quon   September 30th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Not really! On the job trainning is not an option. Her answers to questions are ground breaking, I mean everytime I watch an interview with her, I fall down totally shock. I'm stunned that she is the best the GOP could find for such an important job.

Ron San Diego   September 30th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Hi Jack:

Sarah Palin has a propencity to trip over her tounge. Her explanation with regard to what qualifies her on foriegn policy is a joke. She makes claims that because of the proximity of Russia and Canada to Alaska. She is qualified. Katie asked her if she was involved in any diplomatic negotiations. She was searching for words for the answer. And the best she could come up with is: "We have Trade Missions." McCain needs to find somebody else. Sarah Palin is a very beautiful person inside and out. That does not qualify her to be Vice President.

Ron

J in ATL, GA   September 30th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

No, these interviews are NOT helping Palin. They are however, helping Katie Couric boost her poor ratings. These interview are terribly embarrasing to the Republican party. The most recent one took the cake! She just sat there like a scolded child that had to be defended by her father, McCain! Where did her confidence go?

Terri and Tom in Spring Hill, Florida   September 30th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

No, I do not think the interviews are helping her, I really hope they are showing people what she really is. She is frightening – she seriously thinks she can perform the job of vice president. We are looking forward to Thursday night, Senator Biden really doesn't have to say much, I believe she will hang herself.

Luis   September 30th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

No, and I am glad these interviews reveal the truth about Sarah Palin: she is unqualified and completely out of her league. The fact that she was chosen shows that McCain will do anything to get elected, even putting the nation in danger by his selection of someone completely incapable of fulfilling (vice) presidential duties. If McCain really cared about "country first" he would have chosen someone with substance, intelligence, and experience. —Houston, TX

Larry, Providence, RI   September 30th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Mitch in Midwest   September 30th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Nope she isn't helping the ticket nor is John. The last 'dual' interview was like dad and daughter in the Principal's office. Hey, Jack, doesn't this woman have a degree in journalism? IF that is the case, she ought to know ALL ABOUT how to conduct and/or behave in an interview... Her sentence structure is so fragmented that she is lost in translation...
AND shame on John for sitting next to her, for interrupting Katie, and for making the whole situation more and more laughable.

$85,000,000,000 divided by 200,000,000 people does not equal $425,000 per person. It equals $425 per person.
$425 might buy you what..groceries?
And $780,000,000,000 divided byr 200,000,000 people will only be $3900 dollars per person.

james grope   September 30th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

dear jack, sarah can really help her-self & the country ,pack her bags&get on a moose&ride off in the sun set back to alaska.thank you james

A J   September 30th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Are you kidding? Every time Palin goes in front of a mic, she sounds like she's incompetent. Either she speaks "word salad" and gibberish (translation needed), or McCain is posing as her grandfather at a job interview!!! William Faulkner didn't write sentences as long and rambling as those Palin comes up with at times. I am a 63 year-old former English teacher (retired), and I am appalled at how ridiculous Palin sounds in both extemporaneous situations or scripted interviews. She can't even deliver a speech that has been written for her without sounding "sarcastic" and "nasty"! And Palin simply MUST stop using the word, "ya"! Pathetic!! – AJ Rutten; St. Cloud, MN

John in Arizona   September 30th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Jack this latest interview with her "father" sitting beside her reinforces the public impression that she can't be allowed to go outside to play on her own.

ted   September 30th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

The interviews with Katie Couric should be entitled " country bumpkin meets city slicker reporter" . I have never seen anything more unintelligent in my life for someone who could end up the next president. Its one thing to disagree with a candidates stand on a certain issue but when you can't even understand what they are trying to say is a whole new ball game. If Sarah Palin is the brightest and the best the republican could find to put forward in this election they are in serious trouble.

Norm (Columbia, SC)   September 30th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Umm...no.

Ronnie from Ventura, CA   September 30th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

No I dont think she is helping herself with the interviews. She is beyond unqualified and it is saying a lot about McCain's judgement in my eyes. She has no basic sense of politics on a National or Global scale. She should stick to Alaska bridges!

Beverley, Fredricksburg Va   September 30th, 2008 2:59 pm ET

No, but they sure do give me a reason to chuckle! During these harsh economic times, I need all the comic relief I can get!

Nancy from Indiana   September 30th, 2008 2:59 pm ET

No she still looks and sounds like an amatuer and that won't change until she has had several years of experience in the policital arena. She is not ready to be a VP or a P!

Elisabeth Hansen (Denmark)   September 30th, 2008 2:59 pm ET

She is definitely not helping herself by doing these interviews. Whenever she opens her mouth you're either confused or curling your toes.

Martyn Bignell   September 30th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

Please, please, please let her continue to do these interviews, let the American people see her for what she really is; totally barking mad, the only way I could vote for McCain is if their was some kind of guarrantee that he will live to the age of 81.
This will then cover us for two terms, honestly Jack or indeed anyone can you really put your hand on your heart and say you would trust this women with the Nuclear launch codes, should she become President.

Personally I would not trust her with an air rifle, how could anyone, lets be brutally honest here, when interviewed she goes off like a recorded message; with the net result that she forgets where she started and subsequently goes onto other subjects all together, if it was not so serious it could actually be another Monty Python; In my wildest dreams I really would have never thought that the republicans could come up with somone that actually has a lower I.Q. than George W. Bush, by the way In the UK the w does not stand for Walker.

Karen   September 30th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

Why don't you change your network call letters from CNN to ONN? Because Obama News Network is what you have become – your reporting is so biased its ridiculous. I would love to see one of your reporters pick Obama apart, but oops I forgot... it's his network.

Theresa-Petal, Mississippi   September 30th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

It depends on who you mean by "her". The interviews have helped Katie because we can see she is a serious reporter, but if you're talking about Palin....not so much. She could not be elected mayor of my town of 10,000 people, and we aren't all that picky.

Adam   September 30th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

Maybe if her father wasn't there. McCains facial expressions say enough without him butting in on questions.

Don't worry she'll tank and bring John with her.

Kelvin Morton   September 30th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

Of course Palin's comments are helping her!

They're helping her board the first flight back to Alaska on November 5th!

Pat, Kentucky   September 30th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

No she isn't. My cringe reflex is getting a workout, too. Perhaps they should substitute Tina for Sarah – I think she'd do better.

Kelly from Syracuse, New York   September 30th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Jack,
Asking if Sarah Palin's interviews with Katie Couric are helping her is like asking if pitbulls look good in lipstick: no.

Sherie   September 30th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

It was interesting how the camera kept panning back from Palin to Couric. Had I been in Ms. Couric's shoes I'd not been able to keep up the "poker face." I thought at first that I was supposed to understand what she was saying, but after repeatedly listening to her, I realized it was not I who was confused and speaking gibberish. After that I was given permission to weep and laugh because so many people will vote for McCain simply to vote against Obama. The race is alive but hidden in many places.

Victoria   September 30th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

No. Failing to return alone and stand on her own two feet in her latest interview with Katie Couric just reinforces Sarah Palins incompetence.
John McCain came out with the same condesceding tack he uses to spin all his bad descisions. That somehow none of seem to understand... For McCain to blame Palin's inane public statements on "Gotcha" journalism is hyprocritical at best.

Martyn Bignell   September 30th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Sorry Jack done it again,

Martyn Bignell from Fort Lauderdale.

Jennifer - Murfreesboro TN   September 30th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Not in the least! This time her puppetmaster insisted on being there to help her.
Isn't McCain the one who keeps insisting on town hall meetings? Don't VOTERS ask the questions at them?
Now he wants to insist that a question from a VOTER is foul play?
In the next breath they insist it's "gotcha journalism".
So are they saying it was a journalist conversation? Wouldn't that make it a valid question to be asking?

It's like we're all playing a bit part in The Exorcist. We find our heads doing a spin every day with McCain & Palin!!

tom m., toronto, canada   September 30th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Only if she answers the questions, Jack. Good thing she brought along the chaperone for the last one. If nothing else it should make ventriloquism popular again, though I'm not sure where McCain will hide on the debate stage on Thursday. If it wasn't so scary it would be hysterical.

Tyne from Boulder, Colorado   September 30th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Jack, I think that we both know the answer to that one. It's sad because Palin could actually be an intelligent woman, but these interviews have been a train wreck. She doesn't understand the questions and her answers seem scripted. I chuckle every time Palin gets that confused look on her face when Katie asks a question that doesn't match up with her script of hell bent terrorists, American jobs, and shoring up resources. What was it that everyone kept telling us? That we have been under estimating Palin? Honestly, after these interviews, I've been over estimating her.

Babbs Cazadero, CA   September 30th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Is the McCain campaign purposely trying to blow the election? I'm beginning to think so. Why else would they continue to let Palin humiliate herself and her family? John McCain doesn't want to be at the pulpit when the country is in so much trouble.

Mikaela of Henderson, Nevada   September 30th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

I am so nervous about Thursday's VP debate. Because, as a woman, I feel for Sarah's catastrophic campaign.

But then again, this is probably the last straw that we need for a good riddance.

Their appearance last night at Katie's show defending the Pakistan answer that she gave to a student was a "cheap shot". If they have to do this everytime she slipped up, they would just look"defensive and unqualified, not presidential.

America has to rise above its major problems. I think we need more than a pretty face with short-minded handlers to run this country.

Craig from Denison, Texas   September 30th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

No Jack, anyone she talks too, does not help her campaign, it doesn't even have to be the media. What It does do, is it confirms why the McCain camp keeps her away from the press.

tom in wisconsin   September 30th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

That interview really showed that there has to be at least 100 million women in America that are very much more qualified than she is.

Kev   September 30th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Not as much as it's helping Obama!

william   September 30th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

No Sarah Palin is not helping her chances by staying in the race however, she sure helps Obama and Bidens chances.I think she should stay in the race because she is helping the Democrats.I also think that this is a true reflection of what the next 4 years under John McCain would look like.Like the last 8 years.Poor decisions.

lvegasports   September 30th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

No. I was embarrassed for her (which I didn't think was possible,) that McCain was there to hold her hand and jump to the rescue when facts were called for. Next time, why not just bring Mommy and Daddy? I'm sure they have much more experience in telling her what to say and think.

Tripper of PA   September 30th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Yes, the interviews are helping Palin, but not in the way most people think. It is a great burden to assume the responsibility of being one heartbeat away from the Presidency. And Bush pointed out that the Presidency is, "hard work. (You) have to work nights and weekends." Palin seems like a good gal. I wouldn't want to burden her.

sbb   September 30th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

At least she isn't stuttering through them...

Jim From Chicago   September 30th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

Jack, Sarah Palin is an embarassment to the American people.
Not that we are not the laughing stock anround the world anyway,
but Palin has put the icing on the cake. Every time she opens her
mouth she sounds like a dim witt. McCain should retire and slip into his jammies and watch TV, and Palin should go back to Alaska and
take care of her kids. God Help Us All if these two make it to the White House.

democrat4life   September 30th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

I think she should do more interviews. Maybe interviews that pertain to dog sled races and the complicated politics of Alaska. And how much experience she has as a Commander in Chief of the Alaska NG one weekend a month and two weeks a year. (When the guard is deployed they are title 10, which puts them in the active Army, hence the President is in charge of them). I mean she has so many things to talk about. I think she should be given a chance to explain her " umbrella of job creation" theory. Republicans must think that we Clinton supporters are stupid. If this McCain/Palin ticket wins is because of plain cinical and stupid people voting.

Elle from Pullman, WA   September 30th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

No, these interviews are definitely NOT helping her. It seems that every time she talks to Katie Couric (or any other reporter), she and McCain dig themselves into a deeper hole. If Palin would just admit her faults and move on instead of continually trying to defend the experience she doesn't have, then she may realize that people actually respect honesty more than lies and deception.

Macky   September 30th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

It is pathetic that the Republican Party has allowed Palin to be McCain's VP! Palin needs to go back where she came from. She obviously has a lot to learn!!!! She alone continues to make herself a fool – not the media. She needs to step down and save face.

Pat, Greenville, Ohio   September 30th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

She is only hurting herself, and showing the Alaskans that Todd has been the one in charge. Maybe Mccain could ask Todd to be his veep, he wouldn't even have to change the McCain/Palin signs.

Sandi, from Grand Rapids, Michigan   September 30th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Sarah Palin is just hopelessly unqualified to be VP.

She doesn’t even have a general knowledge of the world that most American’s with an average education possess. It’s not “elite” to read books, or pick up the paper once in a while. We didn’t expect her to be a guru on world affairs…But it’s not too much to ask that she be a little bit informed about the world around her? (Heck, she could have even picked up a few things she didn’t know from reading your blog Jack!)

It’s not OUR fault that she just doesn’t meet our expectations. We didn’t pick her.

John McCain did.

Marie-Ewing,NJ   September 30th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

No, she is only viewed for comic entertainment value.

Ram Riva -- Calexico, CA   September 30th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

It doesn't matter who's interviewing her, the results will be the same
She is who she is and nothing it can be done about it
The republicans gambled and they lost, McCain invested a lot of political real state on the bailout plan, and it failed
Isn't any one concerned that Mrs Palin could be the next president of the United States?
We know the free world is

James Chino, Ontario, Canada   September 30th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Jack,
I think it does!! It would give her an idea of how she comes across to an audience. Then she'll fly back pronto to Alaska and hide her head in the snow for a while, or at least until she can get a better basic education.

Ashley   September 30th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

No, but they sure are helping Obama's poll numbers and SNL's ratings.

Rita   September 30th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Sarah Palin's interviews show what I knew upfront...how little she really knows and understands about world politics, the economy, health care, education etc. The handlers realized early on how inexperienced and unknowledgeable she is; therefore, they limited the access from the press to present an unrealistic view of her capabilities. They have crammed sound bytes into her head. She does not have the intellectual curiosity nor the intellect to understand the complexities of the issues or the nuances. She has demonstrated the fact that she doesn't have the knowledge to answer the questions and then tries not to answer it appropriately.

I suspect she has lost her confidence finally recognizing that she knows so little. She should bow out gracefully from the campaign and not put the nation at risk should McCain win and die. She clearly is out of her league. I cannot imagine her trying to solve the financial crises nor negotiating with Putin. Clearly McCain did not put Country First in his selection of her at the Vice President.

What scares me as well is her black and white view of the world – much like George W Bush. I hear the remnants of the current administration with the good vs evil argument. We will be the laughing stock of the world if she is ever at the helm of our nation.

The handlers can't always hide the real Sarah Palin and the lack of her experience and depth of knowlege of world and national issues is starting to come out.

Gregory   September 30th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Dear Jack:
Sara Palin is not helping her cause at all. Each time she gets in front of a microphone she acts like a blithering idiot spewing archaic ideas as if it is still the Dark Ages. So, please Sara, go back to Alaska, where you can see Russia from your house, continue with the senseless killing of wolves, spout your whacked out religious platitudes and use your lousy example of abstinence toward your useless campaign drivel.
Sincerely,
Gregory, NYC

loray white   September 30th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Yes. Helping her to go back to Alaska. She needs to understand a rule of interviewing. Answer the question, only the question, and shut-up!

Kelly Veino   September 30th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

Yes, I feel they are helping her. They are helping her realize perhaps she is not ready for this job and also helping the American people realize she is not ready for this job.
The fact the republicans are coddling her by keeping her away from the media is ridiculous. She isn't trying out for the high school debating team here, she is trying out for the second most important job in the United States of America.
She doesn't know her foreign policy and the most recent remark about Pakistan to the student shows that. This whole thing is out of control and I think the republicans are realizing this now. And if they are realizing it, they are more out of touch than everyone thinks they are.
Kelly Veino
Vancouver, Canada

Jonique   September 30th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

No, the interviews are not helping her. She was so arrogant when she first started. That is why I do not feel sorry for her. She was not humble, she was full of her self. Mccain sitting beside her only reinforces the idea that she is not competrent. It's like a grandfather shielding her. She should have thought before speaking in the affirmative when asked to run for the second highest office in the land.
Her arrogance and cuteness got in her way. that is why I personally do not feel sorry for her. REmember all of the smart alec things she said. If we vote her in, we will live with the repercussions.

Father Time   September 30th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

Palin is candy for the media. Her political importance will be relegated to a footnote in the annuals of American History that will state she and that old guy (he name escapes me) lost the elections to an astute, well informed and displined Democratic Statesman.

Karen McCullough   September 30th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

Hi Jack,

They certainly aren't helping her, but they are helping the rest of us judge her ability to be Vice-President or maybe even President. She has become a real joke for the Republican Party.

Bruce from Sugar Loaf, NY   September 30th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

She is not helping herself at all. These interviews reveal a very troublesome issue. Sarah Palin, while perhaps smart enough to be governor of a small state (in population only) she is not yet ready for the world stage. Someone who is a heartbeat from the presidency (given John McCain's age and 2 bouts with cancer), really should be making these larges gaafs on foreign policy and economic issues. She should stick to moose hunting.

susan from Idaho   September 30th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

Sadly the poor woman is beyond help. What was Mccain thinking? I would say the fault lies with him. She was just a pawn to further his campaign, which worked until she spoke on her own. Then it was obvious she was not competent to be in the race in any capacity.

Rosalynd Florida   September 30th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

The Couric Interviews with Palin are the McCain camps worse nightmare. The McCain camp must be sweating this VP debate bigtime.

antoinette ali   September 30th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

there really helping the other party

and they just might help her not start a war with other countries that might want to invade us and start speaking their language and start eating noodles and kababs

Cree, S. FL   September 30th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Put simply, NO! But they sure are helping Obama Biden. Keep up the good work, Sarah!

Marilyn, Oklahoma   September 30th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

The interviews do not help Palin. However, one has to wonder if this is not a ploy to divert some attention away from the real issues that do not reflect well on the Republican party, which does hurt McCain. It is just hard to imagine why Palin would willingly go on camera and make herself look incredibly stupid. But it sure does keep us talking about her!

Omar Subotic   September 30th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

Hi Jack,

I just have a very simple question, is John Maccain going to standing next to Sarah Palin on debate night with Joe ?????

Bruce St Paul MN   September 30th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

Chances? Her chances of being elected are about the same as being struck by lightning while cashing in your winning lottery ticket. Her debate camp situation reminds me of a gambit by Jim Dooley, Chicago Bears coach, in 1971. His new quarterback, Bobby Douglass was struggling in the extreme. Dooley moved in with him for a week, they crammed and watched film non-stop. On Sunday, Douglass had the best game of his carreer and the Bears won easlily. Dooley did not continue to live with him and help him study and his performance and the season went down the drain. Dooley was then fired. So good luck with debate camp S.P., but don't expect the results to last.

Dan S   September 30th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Nothing can help Palin. This whole thing has to be a joke! I can not believe the American people don't see that this women is OUT THERE! Can you imagine her running this country. It's over if that happens. McCain is 72. What is there to think about. I really can't imagine her with the economy?

Steve of Hohenwald TN.   September 30th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Shure it is. It`s giving her a chance to show off her superier intelect, her outstanding articulat abilitys. (For me to poop on! ) It dosen`t make her look any smarter, with Pop`s holding her hand ether. This is an outrage, an insult, to all americans. It might as well be a rotting corups, and a head of cabbage, on the gop ticket.

roberto   September 30th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

No, but Palin's interview helped voters get a good look at her skill set.
The last thing we need in these troubled times is someone else who is incompetent.

Chad , Los Angeles   September 30th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

NO, and it makes me so mad how the GOP can insult such a high office with someone who is nothing more than a pretty face. I heard there is a 20% chance that McCain would not make it through his term, which means she would have a fairly good chance at having the most powerful job in the world!! That's just scary...

Nancy, Tennessee   September 30th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Sarah Palin needs to stay off the air waves with interviews with Couric or anyone else for that matter. The ramblings of Sarah Palin have an eerie resemblance to the Valspeak of the Valley Girls of the 80's. "Like" she just doesn't get world politics or national issues for that matter. Is it time to stop this nonsense? "Totally". "Whatever!"

Austin   September 30th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

NO Jack, not at all. She is insecure, unsure & lacks confidence to articulate her thoughts effectively & coherently.

Stephanie   September 30th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

No it isn't. But it is definitely giving Tina Fey some great material for SNL. All Tina has to do is repeat what Palin says word....from....word. Comedy at it's best.
Amazing!

Mike in Oakland   September 30th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

HELL, NO!

All the latest interview proved was that McCain doesn't trust her to enoughb to give an interview by herself and that he thinks she needs to be chaperoned to her every appearance.

Seriously, have we ever seen a candidate for one of the highest offices of the land who has needed to have his/her hand held at every juncture? Publicly?

If Little Orphan Annie isn't not ready to talk to the press and voters without Daddy Warbucks sitting next to her, then she sure as Hell isn't ready to be one heartbeat away from the presidency.

RJH, Grand Rapids, MI   September 30th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

No. I feel sorry for her. She is so unqualified and it becomes more apparent every time she speaks.

Pat from Ridgefield, Connecticut   September 30th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

John McCain is totally responsible for inserting Sarah Palin into the national limelight, without obviously spending much time talking to her first. Now he is stuck and so are we. Yesterday's Katie Couric interview with John McCain seated right beside Sarah Palin, while accusing Katie and others of "gotcha journalism" is a red flag to America. Cna't you hear it, Jack....."Excuse me, Mr. President, may I attend the state dinner, please, I won't say a word!!"
For informed Americans, none of these questions were tricky, Sarah just cannot keep her index card info straight in her head. Now she is part of late night TV, whiles obediently sitting beside Mr. McCain, waiting for the nod from him to answer. Wait until Saturday Night Live airs this week. They don't even have to rewrite the lines....

Kay-Ann   September 30th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Rich, Long Island NY   September 30th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

Nothing can help her.

Mike, Dallas   September 30th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

Perhaps the question should be are Sarah Palin's interviews helping the American people decide who would be best to lead this country through some serious and troubling times. In that case, Yes...vote for the other guys for love of country!

Bill in Beaverton,Oregon   September 30th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

Her interviews are helping Americans see just how dumb and unqualified she is.

Steve in Utah   September 30th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

Absolutely not Jack. Remember Sarah saying this: I say this with all due respect to Hillary Clinton…but when I hear a statement like that coming from a woman candidate with any kind of perceived whine about that excess criticism or you know maybe a sharper microscope put on her, I think you know that doesn’t do us any good – women in politics, women in general wanting to progress this country.
Just curious as to who's whining now? Grandpa McCain had to go with Sarah this time to speak with Couric. It reminds me of being in Junior High School and having your parents come to the Principals office. I believe that McCain has an equilibrium problem because he's constantly spinning.

Maria from DC   September 30th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

This was even worse than last week's interview!!!!! At least then she was answering for herself and standing on her own merit. It's like grandpa McCain is chaperoning the interview between Palin and Couric.

This made her look completely incompetent. Look at McCain's facial expressions and body language as she speaks. He knows this woman is uninformed. Stop the charade!!! I just pray that on Thursday Palin will show the world that her selection as VP was a part of a slimy political strategy.

Kim, Dodge City, Kansas   September 30th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

The only thing these interviews are helping her with, is making her famous for undoing decades of political growth for American women. The "Palin Factor" will overshadow any gains made in the past for qualified and intelligent women who pursue politics. The stereotype she projects is a thousand times more detrimental than any botched interview. At such a pivotal time in our history, she is there as a glaring example of everything wrong in the election process.

Ron (Illinois)   September 30th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Well Jack,
She had a bridge to nowhere and then a road to nowhere. Now she's given the Republicans a Party to nowhere.
I'm sure the Alaskans, like the rest of America, deserve better but it just makes voting sooooo much easier....lol.
Wait! Is that a moose calling?

George in Florida   September 30th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

To err once on a reporter is divine. To err twice with the same reporter borders plain stupidity......

Anthony from Toronto Ontario   September 30th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Jack the answer is no, the interviews don't help her. However, I've got this sinking feeling that she's going to emerge from debate school and manage to hold her own with Biden on thursday evening. All she needs is one good media showing and the Republicans will be falling all over her again. God help the free world if I'm right!

John   September 30th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

It depends on your point of view.

Is it helping the American people make a decision on her readiness to assume the presidency if necessary? Yes. It is called vetting. It is just showing she is a bunch of smoke and mirrors that 300 Alaskan's that voted for her bought off on. The scary part is that she didn't even understand the questions she was being asked. That type of ignorance was only matched by Bush and we know how that story ends.

It it helping get McCain elected? No. It shows McCain's lack of good judgment in making Palin his running mate. And it shows how stubborn and unwilling to change course he is by steadfastly standing by her even though she is woefully unqualified. Does that sound like anyone? Gee, sounds like Bush to me. We don't need anymore of that! Not one minute, not one year and not 4 more years.

John
Carlsbad, CA

C.Mata (Sacramento, Ca)   September 30th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

yeah it helps debunk her so called "experience" and "qualifications." We Obama supporters couldn't be happier. This is why the Obama campaign doesn't waste their time attacking Palin, she's doing a great job destroying herself and McSame. Can't wait til thursday, as T.O. would say, "have your popcorn ready."

Rachielle from VA   September 30th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

They're helping the American people see thru this ridiculous Republican ticket. Since the mainstream media is too scared to put the truth out there, and ask the important questions we have a right to know the answer to, these comical and pathetic interviews Palin does, is helping a lot. Anybody with a brain should know this person is not qualified for potential vice-presidency, but everybody wants to coddle her like a frail fragile flower. I thought she was a pit bull with lipstick? If she can't stomp with the big dogs, she doesn't belong. Taking it easy on her does NOT help the American people. We need tough leaders and she fails. She can read a speech, and that's about it.

Vinnie Vino   September 30th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

Jack,
I don't think so, the more she is interviewed by you guys in the press it translates into less support for her and McCain. Because she is as politically astute as President Bush is knowledgeable of anything occurring in the country or the world...

Mona Galka   September 30th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

The interview with Katie was pathetic as Palin's responses to her questions not only made no sense they in fact did not respond to the questions being asked. McCain showed extremely poor judgment in his choice of running mate since there is even under the best of circumstances the very real possibility that she or any other running mate may have to step into the position of President. Palin is not qualified to take on that role. For example, Palin has stated that she has foreign policy experience by the very fact that Alaska is a neighbor of Russia and Canada. This statement alone speaks volumes to her lack of credentials. If McCain wanted a woman on his ticket, he should have gotten on his knees and begged and promised the world to Candolesa Rice. Then, If he won under that McCain/Rice ticket, our second in command would not have been a total embarassment, but rather someone who commands some respect.

J from DC   September 30th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Of course not, but standards are so low, that a decent sentence from Palin will sound like intelligence to Republicans at this point. She has failed on the economy question. Because of the bailout, it is like we no longer need an MBA to understand why Economics is truly called the dismal science. This crisis is proof that Senator Obama has been right from day one. This is a “defining moment in our history, and there is a “fierce urgency” for a need for change, right now. Now even McCain has taken up Senator Obama’s message of change. Yet some still fail to credit Obama for having foresight and understanding when he forecasted the seriousness of the failed Bush Policies. The more Obama tries to stay above the fray, people continue to do the very things he has been talking against. He is the only candidate with a clear understanding of the root of these problems here in DC. He is clearly better then McCain, but some people can’t seem to accept that. They are like addicts in denial. People need to realize that if Obama wins the White House, it is not an indictment against them. A vote for Obama is, in most cases, a vote for yourself.

Janelle, Wyoming   September 30th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Helping her what...look more unqualified?! She didn't do good in the first interview with Couric, and the second one she brings McCain? It reminded me of some insecure girl who needs her daddy to protect her... This woman could be VP (or President, depending on circumstances), and she can't answer these questions? What was McCain thinking?!

Jessica   September 30th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Of course, she's not helping her chances. Then again, it looks like she's not in tuned with reality, so she may think she's doing a phenomenal job! I can not fathom what McCain was thinking when she was chosen; I mean it was obvious that his VP pick shocked everyone even Romney and Huckleberry who thought that either would be picked. She has no credentials whatsoever and McCain talks about Obama's so-called lack of experience, are you kidding me?! UGH!!

Irene - NJ   September 30th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Palin's interview with Katie Couric was pathetic.

Whenever I see this interview, I HOPE it will convince one more Independent or Republican to VOTE FOR OBAMA.

Just her being there and answering those questions as she did has people asking themselves..........WHAT WAS MCCAIN THINKING! It speaks volumes about John McCain's judgment........IT'S POOR!

Charnie   September 30th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

The interview of Sarah Palin with Katie Couric are helping her showing her ignorance. Seriously if I was her, I would tell McCain thanks but no thanks to that VP position because the world won't forget her anytime time soo; and the worst thing is that she will be remembered as being ignorant. Seriously on Thursday I think she'll be wearing an ear-piece so answers can be fed to her. Watch. Especially if she's wearing her hair down. Seriouly she should be checked before going on stage

I could care less about Katie's interviews. The media is out to get her big time and regardless of what she says, how she says it ...it will be turned around against her one way or another.

I believe the debate will be more definitive and surprise Joe Biden as well as lots of liberals and dem’s.

How about instead of all the Sarah Palin questions you keep asking, get our thoughts about ACORN and why it was included in the bailout package.

Of course she is helping herself OUT with the interviews. I think the more she interviews, the more she can see for herself that she is totally not ready to or not ready for the vice presidency of the girlscouts much less the Vice Presidency of the good ole USA. But MIND YOU, it wouldn't surprise me if McSame/Failin win the election.

Lee   September 30th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

Sarah Palin is more qualified to be vice president than Obama is president. I wish someone would tell me one thing he has done that qualifieds him to be president.
Palin's interviews are not read from a monitor as Obama are. I think McCain made Obama look DUMB.
Katie Curie is on her way out and should be. No one watches CBS news anymore because they can't stand her whiney voice and crooked smile.

Lyra Talarico   September 30th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

The one thing that they can do is to try and reassure the American voters and to help us understand why we need this bail out plan in laymans terms so we can understand. Since neither candidate are on any of the committees they need to step aside and not put presidential politics into it. This is our current President plan and he and Congress needs to work it out. The candidates can tell me what they will do as President so we never have to go down this path again. How they will protect and fight for Main Street.

Sarah Palin did better with John McCain answering the questions for her but what people need to ask themselves is: How will she handle our country's business if she ever has to fulfill the job of president and doesn't have McCain to make decisions for her? Scarey thought !

Thank you Jack for what needs to be said, Sarah Palin is a Joke and I don't know how anyone could look more stupid, or hurt her image more than Palin did on that interview. If people really think that McCain or Palin are qualified to bring this nation back from the darkness than they are seriously mistaken, The United States can not Survive with her one step away from the Oval Office

Quit asking her about finance, foreign affairs and the rest of that boring government stuff. I want to know how many raisins she uses in her oatmeal cookies. Then follow up with a chocolate chip cookie question. I'll bet Katie couldn't even answer those questions.

Rod, Elgin IL   September 30th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Palin's interviews are helping voters see (with clarity) that she was a "placebo – pick" for McCain. How in the heck did people pretend to "connect with" or be so doggone comfortable after one speech written by someone else?

Its a sign of some type of blatant bias amongst certain demographic groups against Obama who they have seen campaign for almost 20 months.

Ironically, it was EXTREMELY sexist for John McCain to have to sit side by side with Couric in a followup interview with Palin...I guess the "pit-bull"is on a short leash and her handlers are taking the MUZZLE off anytime too soon.

Palin is a slap and insult to any intelligent voter.

John from PA   September 30th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

The interviews are probably helping Sarah Palin a lot. She seems very inexperienced and this is good training for her. Are the interviews helping her to win the confidence of a confidence-shaken America? No way. Her lack of knowledge and understanding scares voters. We as a nation are not in a stable place. We can't risk four more years of international blunders and domestic fumbles. I wish the rest of the world didn't have access to these interviews; we really look like fools.

Jack,

Most certainly not! Even if I were a McCain/Palin supporter I would be completely embarassed by the poor representation she did for Republicans. I was actually doing odd jobs around my room while listening and far too many times did I have to stop and say to myself, "What in the he** did she just say?", and "Did you answer the question?". People blog on here and blast each party but it is seriously frightening on how she has gotten this far. Are people that prideful to not realize she is the wrong candidate for the job posting, Vice President of the United States?

Dawit Beyene   September 30th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

Dave Waterfall   September 30th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

From Prospect Bay Nova Scotia;
She should go into hiding until November 5th. I still think she will come down with some ailment before Thursday's VP debate.... It's her only chance of survival. I'm sure a lot of Republicans are cringing at the prospect of her operating mouth, without engaging brain!

Cindy   September 30th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

Is McCain a sexist?- He doesn’t trust that Palin can defend her own statements with the press so he has to appear with her…. (not that he’s of much help, as much help as he was in going back to congress to help with the bailout)!

Does Joe Biden have Obama by his side when he has to take back a gaffe he’s made?

It looks like McCain's playing the sexist card to me!

McCain take your poor little Palin and go away– you are done for!

Did you notice how grandpa McCain tried to pick a fight with Katie over gotcha journalists vs. voters' right to know. I was hoping Katie wouldn't back down, but she's too nice.

Esmond L. from FL   September 30th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Jack,

If by helping herself you mean Palin showing up with her chaperone, Grandpa McCain, then I'd say "yes" her redo with Couric helped us to really understand what she meant in her interview last week.

Lynn, frustrated Republican, Jamul, CA.   September 30th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Why do you think McCain keeps her on a tight leash- when she opens her mouth she sounds as moronic as Bush, unless she's giving a canned speech. She trained to be an interviewer, not an interviewee; and all this yak about her being a govenor makes her qualified – Bush was a governor and it certainly didn't help the country. I wish someone would point out that her "mayorship" was a part-time job – I'd like to know if the weather determined her ability to be mayor.

kathie Atlanta   September 30th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

With all the bad news about the economy and the "bailout", it is really thoughful for one party to provided some "comedy relief" in these depressing times. Thank you, John McCain for providing an opportunity for an occasional smile.

Julie from LA   September 30th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Is McCain going to be allowed to sit with her in the Thursday debate?

That looked TERRIBLE, like an old Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy act. What an embarrassment McCain has turned out to be.

Randy, Salt Lake City   September 30th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Ooooo, I don't think so, Jack. I think the only way out of this mess she's got herself into is if she takes Hugh Hefner's offer and pose nude in Playboy. Now THAT would help her a lot!

John K US Citizen in the Dominican Republic   September 30th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

No, but the moose and wolves are happy she is busy elsewhere.

Reh, Land of Enchantment   September 30th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

Not when Thunder Cloud McCain micromanages her every word. Yesterday’s interview was pitiful. The few times Palin was permitted to speak, she frequently looked to McCain for approval. Meanwhile, he made goofy expressions meant to show support. Then he interrupted her and began speaking on her behalf. It appears McCain has assumed a parent-child role with Palin, attempting to protect her from the big, bad “gothcha” world. Give me a break!

Sherri   September 30th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

They don't help her BUT they help the American people see how UNQUALIFIED she really is. She's a Barbie Airhead plain & simple! It is a reality to everyone that the Republican party was all about kissing the butts of the Conservative base and thought they could shield her from the media and everyone until election day except for some photo ops. It frightens me to think of McCain as President with WAR WAR WAR mentality and even scarier to think that Palin could be President should McCain die in office, she would be nothing but a puppet for the GOP with the strings controlled by them and she would only be a pretty face with no voice. America is not stupid and we must do better. After 8 years of BUSH/CHENEY and the economic abyss they have put the country in, its definitely time for a change!

Carol c.   September 30th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

You know, Jack, initially I looked at her and saw the parrot because she said the same thing. Then when she was given a little "leash" she has no clue.

And though I am voting democratic, I feel sorry for her. They found the most conservative, non-political person they could find, and threw her to the wolves. The democrats do not have to pick her bones–her own party has done that. Go home, Sarah, you have given enough to your party and they have hung you out to dry.

Mrs. Miller   September 30th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

It is truly embarrassing and almost worthy of pity to see her digging herself deeper and deeper by providing answers that are non-specific and incoherent. The woman can't complete a coherent sentence - which gives me the impression that she has NO CLUE about what goes on in the lower 48. I didn't watch the interview in its entirety, but watched excerpts and she (honestly) reminded me of the teen in the beauty pageant who was asked about why Americans can't locate the US on a map. Afterwards, as a viewer you're left wondering if that was a joke. Not a good feeling to pass along to voters.

Estella   September 30th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Jack,

Have anyone noticed that McCain is going through a melt down right before our eyes? And that leave Sarah Palin who cannot find her way to the White House, let alone be incharge. The American people need to wake up and smell the coffee. We are in trouble if he makes it to the White House.

Jessica   September 30th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Can you picture this woman in office as the president?! OMG!!! I can just picture her, with respect to foreign policy, saying that she has a close relationship with Vladimir Putin because she was able to see him from her home in Alaska. I mean, come on, are you kidding me?

Chryssa   September 30th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Every time little miss Sarah opens her mouth for any reason without a teleprompter she only helps Barack Obama. For those of us that have been paying attention right from the start. She just keeps confirming what we already knew. For the independent and undecideds I believe she is helping them make up their minds to vote for Barack. I also believe that she is helping John McCain realize that he has made one bad choice after another since this hole thing started. I Truly believe that on election day John McCain WILL put his country first and even he will vote for Barack Obama. Ray Center Ossipee, N.H.

Jack, In a word NO. She has shown how shallow her knowledge is on national and international affairs. But she might do well in the debates despite that because sometimes questions are asked that her coached answers will suit. It depends whether there are follow up questions and how much detail she tries to go into.

Don, Tampa, FL   September 30th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

It has gotten so bad, she needs McCain at her side to translate whatever she says into McCain/Rove/Bush speak. The trouble with that is McCain and his own campaign can't even seem to agree from one moment to the next what the message is. Put this animal out of its misery.

ED FROM WISCONSIN   September 30th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

HEY JACK,

It was the most ridiculous interview by a politician that I have ever seen, it was a disgrace to American politics. Palin clearly demonstrated why here campaign keeps her away from the media, Palin seemed unknowledgeable and nervous answering basic presidential questions. She told Katie Couric that she has foreign policy experience because of the proximity of Russia to Alaska, which was bizarre. Furthermore, Katie asked her to name four things Mc Cain has reformed and Palin responds," I WILL HAVE TO GET BACK TO YOU ON THAT". She doesn’t even know Mc Cain’s stance on issues or policies, and she’s his running mate. This election must really be a game to Republicans, if they still believe that she is qualified to be a heartbeat away from the president.

Bill   September 30th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

They are helping the American people understand how out of her league she is; I feel sorry for her although I don't agree with her philosophy or political positions. However, here is a different question: what in the world was Sen. McAllen doing seated next her and answering questions before she could speak? What does that tell you?

Jerry from Jacksonville   September 30th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

Only the bible thumping evangelicals would think that someone who looks totally stupid is doing good, case in point George Bush and John McCain. I can't believe anyone would think that she is helping herself, is she just that dumb or is she playing dumb. George and John don't have to play dumb. What will get McBush is his constant lying, he is worse than George, how can the american people vote for someone that is a compulsive liar, he has gotten to the point that ever point he tries to make is nothing but a lie, he is to the point the old saying applies to him that he is lying about issues when the truth would serve him better.

Lucy from New Orleans   September 30th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

No Jack. And I would add that John McCain appears to be suffering from the Imposter Syndrome. I believe that his fear of actually becoming President has caused him to attempt to sabotage his own campaign by chosing this woman.

Bob Gaffrey Southfield, MI   September 30th, 2008 3:42 pm ET

She'd be better off sticking to the "no talk express". What really gets me is that she had to have ol' grandpa McSame there with her for the last one.
Then there's this stuff about "gotcha journalism"...you have to understand that it can only happen when the gettin is good. A competent, knowledgeable candidate diminishes the chances of that happening.

Revarlo (VA)   September 30th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

The fact that speaks the most about Gov Palin's qualifications for VP is her degree. Her degree is in Journalism yet she can't get through a simple interview with the media. The same media she studied for in college. I am not sure how she reached the position of Governor but she should quit while she is ahead. Todd holds her hand in AK. Now McCain holds her hand in the Lower 48.

Linda Kay -Minnesota   September 30th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

I hope these interviews wake up America and scare them into seeing Ms. Palin needs to go back to Alaska–I hear they aren't all that happy with her either anymore.

With every interview, Sarah Palin more and more confirms my opinion of her. She's not a serious candidate; she's just a pretty face. I know that sounds sexist, but she's not a serious candidate. I don't see how she comes out looking good from a debate with Joe Biden. It's goona be a bloodbath.

Michael   September 30th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

By Senator McCain butting in on a question asked by Kati Couric to Ms. Pailen, only shows how low of an option the good senator has of Palin’s ability to walk and chew gum.

Lynda   September 30th, 2008 3:45 pm ET

Every time Ms. Palin opens her mouth, she's getting the Obama/Biden campaign another vote.

We saw the beginning of her inadequacy during her first interview with Charlie Gibson, her interview with Sean Hannity just added some kindling to the pile, and the Katie Couric interviews with (and without John McCain's presence and intervention) have turned into a roaring bond fire.

Haven't we, the American people had enough with mental and intellectual midgets? What good is experience when the end result of said experience is failure? Whether or not the surge worked is irrelevant when you consider that IF there had been NO WAR, there would NOT have been a NEED to have a SURGE!

We've had enough of being governed by a man with a hot temper and a fast mouth, how about being governed with a man that has a working, functioning BRAIN.

Medical science with all of its progress and miracles has not learned to successfully transplant the human brain, and with McCain and Palin in the White House, that just what we're going to need. There's not the merest shadow, hint or suggestion of intelligence between the two of them.

No! even McCain doesn’t have time for anything else, he’s got Sarah on a leash and muzzle and we all know he’s not good at multitasking, plus he and the GOP are busy looking for a 10 feet pole to poke Bush or his $700 billion bailout plan with. Palin is looking like a college freshman who just called her “political daddy” McCain on the cell phone and told him daddy the professor just failed me on political science 101. Please come and force them to give me a makeup test and daddy has to sit-in.

Ron (Illinois)   September 30th, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Jack -

It depends on what you mean as help. She sure is helping to fill that "box of rocks" the Republicans have going lately.

Mark (Jefferson, NC)   September 30th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

You know George Bush has always been like one of those dolls that you pull the string in its back. He had about 15 different answers and could, somewhat , ricite them. But Palin has taken it to a whole new level. She is in the computer age, so she is sounding like a doll with a defective computer chip that is supposed to sound off in a digital recording. But there is a major glitch, a short circuit in her motherboard. Sounds come out, but not in the way the program was written, Just random words that make absolutely no sense. The makers of this doll need to do a recall. So is she helping? In the way Palin would say it " When John McCain and Barak Obama are elected to Mayor of Alaska I will say thanks but no thanks to the bridge to Russia so I can focus on raising family values which will create jobs and we won't have to move to Iran to live with the radical terrorists who look to drill for oil, and kill all our mooses which put lipstick on our hockey moms. "

I don't think these interviews will help her get the VP job, or keep the one that she already has.

Mark   September 30th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

The latest interview with John McCain seemed more like a dad bringing his daughter to work, than a presidential candidate appearing with his running mate. No I don't think it is helping her image or McCain's.

Joe   September 30th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

Lets give the 300 Million americans, 1 Million dollars each to get the economy started and let the banks and wall street fend for themselves, that will save us the $700 billion bailout.

Donna from Las Vegas, Nevada   September 30th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

No. How can she be helped? She is just simply unqualified for V.P. The latest interview with Couric was pathetic, she had McCain as her babysitter and protector followed by blame on "gotcha journalism". Who do these two (Laurel and Hardy) want to point fingers at the next time. They have turned this Presidential Campaign into a joke! I am so upset by the continuing circus, I've changed my voting status from Republican to Democrat and am voting for Obama!

Max Khan   September 30th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

If we, the US Taxpayers, are going to spend a minimum of $700 billion – not counting the bail outs that have already occurred; AIG, automobile industry, banks, Lehaman Bros, etc. then we the taxpayers are entitled to get our money's worth; a candidate that can have us in stitches every time she opens her mouth. Is that asking too much?

Cathie   September 30th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

I think she's doing just fine. She's been placed smack dab in the middle of a crisis that most of the people on Capital Hill don't even understand, much less know how to fix – how fair is it that we expect her to have all the great wisdom now? I suppose Biden has all the answers, right?

Peter B   September 30th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

They most surely are. Helped me a lot. It's good to know that her experience in foreign affairs is based on detailled observations of Rusky planes flying over Alaska and negotiating the salmon quota with the Cannucks. After all those pesky Canadians are always up to something sneaky. Leaking the plan to blow the b'Jesus out of Pakistan or whoever is a brilliant way to hedge bets just in case one of McCain or Palin accidently trip over the attack button. They can say 'You were warned' without recourse.

William   September 30th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

OK...First of all, let me say that my political leanings are center right (registered independant), so I am somewhat predisposed to like conservatives. I saw the last Saturday Nigo finht Live skit before I saw the actual interview. Initially I didn't find it as humorous as the first Tina Fey/Palin skit because I thought that they seemed to really be stretching (for comedic affect) to try and continue to make Sarah Palin look unprepared and ignorant on the economy and national security.

After the show, I found the original interview online and I was blown away to find that they were barely stretching the truth. I couldn't believe it.

She is incredibly unprepared to to be one step from the presidency. She is a long way away from being ready to enter national level politics on this scale.

I still find some things to like about her, but I don't want to vote for her. Note to Sarah Palin: Try running for congress first and learn a little before you try and leap to the top.

james hudgens   September 30th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

Keep up the good work! On the walls of the Supreme court is engraved what is past is prologe. It occurs to me that in 1719 a man named John Law had an idea to start what at that time they called a sand bank (land). All the near do wells invested like bees to honey. He was a gambler, and basically exchanged money for paper (shares). His banking scheme The Mississippi scheme was sold to the regent following Louis xiv death in 1715 the aire to the throne was only seven years of age. The regent knowing he controlled the purse strings agreed to the scheme he did not understand. The bank failed Jack. Lets call for the articles of Impeachment and throw both George and Cheney out on their proverbial ears.

Kristi- WA   September 30th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

They do not help her. She doesn't understand the questions. So she can do as many interviews as possible with McCain babysitting her, she still comes across as dumb. I would love to see an interview with Obama and Biden together. That would show the drastic difference in the two campaigns. Babysitters club vs. Team Obama/ Biden.

Andrew   September 30th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Perhaps the GOP figures if she keeps doing the interviews, she might, just might, get better at speaking. Frankly, I prefer the interviews, as sad as they are, to having her sequestered away where we can't see just how terrible she really is. The only defense I ever hear for her is "Go Sarah! Everyone else is just elitist." I fail to see how cogent speech and coherence make a politician elitist. – Los Angeles, CA

George in TX   September 30th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Her interviews with Katie are helping all of us get to know her, and you know what, she's perfect. Should the voters be stupid enough to give the GOP four more years to finish the job of drowning us, we're going to need something to laugh about.

Susan Lane   September 30th, 2008 3:49 pm ET

Just think guys, she could be a heartbeat away from running this country. Just the fact that he picked someone only to boost his campaign just shows his lack of concern for the country. How could you trust McCain to lead this country when he makes choices that are purely to benifit him not the country. He is sad , and she is even sader.

Hilda   September 30th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

Jack, it's like this, if Sarah Palin wins this debate, I will walk from IL to AK with no shoes. (Maybe). She will not be able to phone a friend, eliminate an answer or ask the audience for help.

Mark Luster   September 30th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

Jack- These interviews don't help her, but they do help US. We need a laugh right now. It's not too sexist of McCain to be there to referee, is it? She should never have to answer for herself; she's not qualified to explain her own statements.

Terri, Canada   September 30th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

I watched an excerpt last evening, and was stunned to see Big Daddy John sitting there beside her. That in itself is killing her slowly.

The sad part of this whole debacle is, as she shows herself to be clearly unprepared for the world stage, and her handlers ensure she doesn't express an original thought, she is coming across as woefully ignorant of her inexperience and uttlerly naive to think she could fill this bill in two months or less. She is a prop of McCain's campaign and runs the risk of killing any political future she may have had. What was once a clever choice by a desperate candidate is now a dangerous choice for the American people by a power-at-all-costs candidate.

James Jones   September 30th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

No, she should stop while she is ahead. She cannot answer simple questions and all of her answers do not answer what she is being asked. It's like she is a puppet and she repeats what she was told to say, but was never told to just answer the common sense questions with simple answers that are somewhat close to what John McCain wanted her to say. We will really be in for it if they keep her as Vice President and John McCain passes away during his term. The Republicans will have control of the country again because Palin doesn't have enough sense to run it!!!

Rich - Los Angeles   September 30th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

I think that the interviews need to stop if Palin is going to maintain any type of respect(even with alaskans). McCain sitting next to her as if a parent was sitting next to his/her child saying "okay, you created this mess, now lets clean it up" is pathetic in the political world. The only thing that's missing from this lady is a pinch collar and a leash. She's obviously not on the same page as McCain, and definitely does not have an understanding of much of anything.

Jon Gill,philadelphia   September 30th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

Only is she wants to completely torpedo her chances.
Let's face it, if she can't handle Couric how can she handle Biden, or for that matter being vice-president?
Never in American history has that expression (one heartbeat away) been more relavent.
She's simply not qualified and whether or not she can handle Couric doesn't change that simple fact.

Paulette, CT   September 30th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Yes Jack, these interviews are certainly helping. They are helping people who otherwise might be on the fence, to vote for Obama.

I'm not looking forward to watching her embarrass herself again, although I really want to see what happens. What could she possibly learn in 3 days of boot camp?

This whole Palin situation is just terrible. Haven’t we been through enough? Is this the best McCain could offer? God help us if he wins.

Jon Gill,philadelphia   September 30th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Jillian (Texas)   September 30th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

No, and given her track record so far, we can expect that McCain's campaign will hide her from the press more than ever. Palin's appearances will be limited to rousing soccer moms across the country who want a VP "just like me." Disgusting.

Thomas, Yo.town, OH   September 30th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Sarah Palin is not the issue here. It's John McCain's decision making process and the people he chooses to surround himself with.
Let's face it........John learned well from Bush.

Jessica   September 30th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Keep going Palin!!! You're doing great. I'm totally routing you keep screwing up because you'll just help Obama win and make McCain look like a dumb @$$! Keep going, good job, lets have more interviews like that.

Margaret, Fort Worth   September 30th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

What the interviews show is that there is a reason why the campaign has kept the muzzle on the "pit bull" (Her words describing herself....) I believe her college degree is in communication. Her responses were stunningly incomprehensible. In her defense, she was not running for the job when she was tapped, but her selection for McCain's VP shows his lack of ability to choose competent people for his administration. Palin's responses to Couric's questions show that he made a poor choice. He had so many others to choose from. Pretty much anyone would be a better choice. McCain says the American people have taken to her. I'm not sure how anyone who watched that interview can confidently vote for a ticket with her on it. She's an embarassment.

Kit Perkins   September 30th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Sarah Palin makes the rambling, incoherent answer given by the Miss Teen USA contestant from South Carolina in last year's pageant sound brilliant by comparison. Keep it coming.

Marsha from Glendale, Arizona   September 30th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

No Jack – these interviews are not helping Palin. I think McCain has done a disservice to her by putting her on the ticket for a job she is not close to being prepared for. This is not a game-this is serious and no longer funny.

After watching Palin's interviews, I am convinced that the rest of the World is thinking that American Women must really be stupid if Sarah Palin is the best we could offer in a female Vice Presidential candidate. As a woman, I am totally dissapointed. As an American, I am totally mortified.

dan radcliff   September 30th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

No she is not. Everytime she opens her mouth we are able to hear just how unqualified she really is.
I'm not sure she will have enough time to rehearse for the debate, but then Mrs Bush said she thinks Palin is a quick study, so she might do ok...hopefully not.
I am more worried about Palin possibly becoming the next Vice President than I am worried about the economy. I pray that the Republican voters will see this Pitbull With Lipstick for who she really is and that is unqualified.

In what respect, Jack??

Dennis in NM   September 30th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

I can't see how Jack. She reminds me of a deer caught in the headlights of a car, and this time she brought John McCain along to assist her. His taking over of the interview when she was trying to respond just shows her ineptness. I feel sorry for her in the debate Thursday.

Steve in Los Angeles, California   September 30th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Jack, the only thing continued interviews with Katie Couric are accomplishing is giving the writers on SNL a short break. All Tina Fey has to do to crack the audience up is dress up like Palin, and parrot her responses to Couric verbatim.

At this point, the only thing that would help Palin and the McCain campaign is a ticket in first class on a flight back to Alaska. It will save both Palin and McCain from incredible embarrassments to come.

Sean   September 30th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

I'd like to answer this question with confidence, but the truth is, it's hard to tell. For me personally, the interviews make her look undeniably unqualified, but there is clearly a portion of the American population that is willing to believe that somehow, asking direct, pertinent questions about the issues is "picking on" Palin, and that despite her inability to answer them, she's completely qualified to step into the Presidency should the need arise. This acceptance and support makes me fear for this great country on a level I've never felt before.

Thank you, Jack, for being outspoken about this. This woman is obviously not helping herself or her party by continuing to do these interviews. But she is certainly helping many Americans by shedding the light on who Sarah Palin is. She is not ready to take leadership of our country in any way, shape or form.

I'm interested in knowing how this "unbailout" will effect our getting our S.S.I. checks, and what effect will it have on CDs.

Like a stew, it won't be any good until it boils a while, so I think the "cooks" that got this thing going, (and we all know who they are") should line up around the pot and see how well their golden parachutes protect them from this boil over.

Teresa, Tallahassee, FL   September 30th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

I can't bear to watch the interviews so my only exposure has been the clips comparing them to the SNL clips. I am not sure just how much that helps her credibility. At least when Dana Carvey did the elder Bush it was a parody and not an impression.

I am giving her the benefit of the doubt, though. If the average voter is having problems keeping track of McCain's current position on any of the issues, I am sure Sarah Palin is having a hard time trying to figure out what she can say and not appear to contradict him.

Dan Ahrens, West Plains, Mo   September 30th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

I don't think the interviews are hurting her. If I recall Roosevelt had the same problem with TV interviews back in 1929. I think that is right....I may have to ask Joe Biden to see if my facts are straight.

Stan   September 30th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

Katie Couric is truly a professional. How did she maintain a straight face when Palin responded to her questions? I would have burst out in laughter. And Palin was serious about her responses!! Palin has a bright future in comedy.

Greg, Hamilton Ontario   September 30th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

She makes my skin crawl, because by her standards, I can see America from my house so I am qualified to be ambassador. Hmmm...I wonder what the job pays.

Mary Beth Tully, Garden City, NY   September 30th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

Jack, Keep piling on Palin and you just fuel the McCain-Palin base to defend (and vote for) their gal against the media elite! Move on, Jack–the Couric interview is ancient history in the wake of the 777 market drop.

Paul Wyman   September 30th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

Here's the solution to the bailout crisis:
The government passes a law which converts all subprime mortgages to 5-year fixed interest at 6% interest only. This means a monthly mortage of only $500 per $100,000 of mortgage. The crisis is caused by subprimes being of uncertain value. This action makes the value known and definite. Banks will fall over themselves to buy these mortgages and the liquidity system will be restored. Wall Street banks will be forced to revalue all the con-job secutities and esoteric derivatives and if they take a loss on the deal, then Wall Street will get exactly what they deserve. This solution is free and it doesn't cost $700 Billion. Let's not curse the darkness, just light a candle on the problem !! The solution is to change unknown mortgages into visible value and this solution will do it!

Anna, Quakertown PA   September 30th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

No, but I think should do an interview with Katie Couric every night.
We the people should get to see how unqualified she is. If the information is in her head she could answer these questions.

We can all see the answers are no where in her head to be found and no amount of shoving by republican strategists is going to get it in that head of hers.

Yes, the interviews are helping her. When this is over she will understand how serious the job of vice president really is.

It's not just a bunch of stump speeches. It requires knowing what you're talking about to a greater degree than she can exhibit.

She can cram for the debate like for a midterm exam, but that is no way near the depth of understanding that she will need to actually do the job.

Chris Brown from NJ   September 30th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Jack,

I still don't buy the ditzy act. I think she's setting us all up. I'm an Obama supporter, but I find it hard to believe any nominee for VP of this country is that misinformed and/or unqualified. I expect her to be sharper and more informed for Thursday. I think she may surprise us. It wouldn't help the Dem's for her to be competent, but at least the rest of the world wouldn't think we're all complete morons.

When all the Republican "strategists" can point to with pride is Palin's speech at the convention, without, of course, pointing out that it was written for her to read (like a sportscaster on local TV), one wonders if she could EVER make a coherent statement all by herself.

I had this fantasy: Biden should write a speech for Obama to deliver verbatim and Palin should do the same for McCain. Bwaaaahaaahaaa....

Cheryl Ensign   September 30th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

I can't understand how any American voter could vote for McCain/Palin after watching these interviews. If elected, this woman is one step away from the presidency, and given McCain's medical history, this could actually happen. When Nixon/Agnew were elected, I considered leaving the country. If McCain/Palin are elected, (God forbid) I'm packing up and moving to Canada!

David Reich   September 30th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Is it easy to be a popular governor in Alaska? I think so. How is it that the citizens of Alaska get a financial windfall because the rest of the country is paying so much for fuel? The refund checks they are getting from the oil revenue for just living in Alaska are insane. Why has not a single politician suggest these fund should be distributed to all of us? It is not just Alaska's oil but the all of our oil. I am against there expanding drilling in Alaska not for environmental issues but because it increases these unfair refunds.

They are helping her, Jack, but more importantly they are helping America. Ya know, if one more person learns about John McCain's plan for victory and his time as a POW, the more they will see that Barack Obama is really not white for America–I mean RIGHT for America. And Jack, it's really about job creation and the umbrella of national security, and so, yeah...

We question whether Couric’s interviews are helping anyone. Sara Palin is just a fresh face on the national scene. Couric’s comments were
caustic and non informative. They were self serving for Couric, and did not serve us in finding out who is Palin.

Maybe someday, journalists will actually ask questions that are informative and show responsible journalism. LOL.

I think the interviews might be helping her! After her rambling and cringe inducing interview with Katie Couric the American people, myself included, have little to no expectations of her to succeed in the debate on Thursday. However I am sure she is cramming somewhere with McCain advisors to have simple answers engraved into her mind so she sounds somewhat coherent on Thursday night!

It depends on how you look at it.

The interviews with Couric are horrible, but it has lowered her expectation a lot over the past week. Palin is to debate Thursday and now if she can complete a sentence it will look like a success.

Furthermore, it solidifies the republican voting block that is anti-intellectual. All the people who point fingers and say "Oh they are an elitest" love seeing someone dumber than them,

The McCain/Palin ticket's biggest problem right now is making sure people turn out to vote and Palin is helping that effort.

It also hurts the ticket as it may push some of the more moderate conservatives towards Obama. These are the people that realize that McCain put his campaign before country and that Palin is a gimmick.

nilo   September 30th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

Jack,
First, I love your commentaries on CNN. Second, enough already! Why do we in these times of war and economic turmoil have to be subjected to Sarah Palin's SNL type performances on the news? If we needed a comedian for the job, MaCain should have picked Tina Fey for VP. She would have been a heck of a lot more articulate than Ms Palin!

I think she should have to get patted down before the debates for mics, like Bush had during his. She is the perfect example of the neccessity for serious vetting and more importantly, good JUDGEMENT in choosing someone for the second highest office in the country. McCain should be ashamed of himself.

Although I can't bring myself to support the Republicans, I think the Palin interviews are helping in a roundabout way. She appears to be grossly out of touch with domestic and world issues now so she'll automatically be written off during the debate. However, if we've learned anything from the Republicans, they have an ace up their sleeve. She'll probably have more of a feel and understanding of these issues by then; I think her sounding dumb now sets her up to do better than expected on Thursday. Pundits beware....

Absolutely mind boggling the constant nonsense spew... very poor judgment John McCain. My husband and I actually look forward to the interview gaffs. I mean you've got to laugh. It's either that, or cry when you realize how close she is to the presidency.

No!!! McCain will wish he had never seen the State of Alaska. I feel sorry for her having to debate. Mac Daddy McCain want be there to intervien. A bad day for the country Thurday night. Charles of Florida

Jeanette   September 30th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Gilbert Arizona; I think Palin is dumber than a post. and I believe McCain is pretty smart to keep singing her praises. He is not getting any of his own and all the falck about his running mate keeps him in the forefront. She needs to go back to Alaska, run the state, god forbid, and take care of her family. Husband must be home keeping the fires burning at her job as governor and mother. The debate should be mind bending. Saturday NIght LIve will be fun to watch this week,

Bill Law   September 30th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

It has been very clear to all voters that you are doing all you can to defeat Mr. McCain. If that were not true we would see as much fault finding toward The Obama team. The media is in fact electing our next president. I just wonder how well you would withstand similar scrutiny.

Martimr1   September 30th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Tina Fey would almost certainly do better than Palin. When NOT impersonating Sarah, Tina can speak in complete sentences and at least hangs out with people who are deeply interested in important issues such as curing world hunger and saving the environment. She very likely has some serious brain cells in there.

Ron in Hood River, Oregon   September 30th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Jack, seeing John McCain sitting next to Sarah Palin during the interview brings memories of me sitting next to my daughter at a school conference with her teacher! The only difference being I would not jump in when she was asked a question, she needed to answer her own questions! I am very turned off to a McCain/Palin ticket!

Val in Concord, Ohio   September 30th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Palin's interviews are only helping Obama and Biden.

david r   September 30th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

This all goes back to something much more disturbing. From what I understand, McCain, chose Palin, during a temper tantrum. He was unhappy with the choices the people vetting the VP position were offering, so he chose Palin, almost spitefully, while angry. Apparently he has a history of doing this.

So a man, with a history of temper tantrums, and making bad decisions during those tantrums, is NOT the man I want making decisions for me or my country.......

BTW. to answer your question, No, she is in way over her head. I

carole scharfenberger, little river,sc   September 30th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Palin should stick with Fox and Bill O"Reily, it's her only hope of making any sense. They're naturals at spinning confused, senseless answers, backed up with little or no facts.

educated Ron   September 30th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

It helps her with those who are going to vote for that ticket no matter what happens. She could use the N word and her followers would get even more fired up. The more they hear and see her the more it helps fire up her base. It hurts with independents and it hurts with democrats since she is viewed as a mother of 5 poor victim.

Jennifer Hake   September 30th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

The first interview with Couric revealed how ill-equipped Palin is to truly be a VP let alone a President should anything happen. The second interview where she is sitting on Grandpa John's lap showed that she is not only ill equiqqed but that she also lacks the backbone to even do an interview by herself let alone run a country. I don't think this woman can even reach a ceiling without someone else fetching a ladder on her behalf, let alone shatter any glass celiings.

Mike in Orlando   September 30th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

I am amazed that people still think she is great, how embarassing for the Alaska people to have voted her in and they like her. We deserve so much more in this country. Good thing is she is killing any chance of McCain winning.

Joe Unger, San Francisco   September 30th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Probably not helping and not hurting.
The pic is between Obama and McCain. Despite all the blather, that is what people will base their vote on. No person in their right mind should be basing their vote solely on who a candidate has selected as their VP. It should be considered but it is only a small part of what should be considered overall. VPs have not had a big impact in prior races and it most likely will not in this race.
I have no plans to watch the VP debate and the only one I remember ever watching is Bentson/Quayle which I only remember because of Bentsen's zinger. And yet Quayle was elected VP!
The economy will decide this election unless Iraq or some other world crisis flares up.
I will admit though, that she seems to have become lightning rod for ugly partisan attacks by Obama supporters. I guess a new kind of politics is only a slogan.

Ann from California   September 30th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Is Sarah Palin helping her chances by continuing to do interviews with Katie Couric?

YES! They are helping her to elect Obama as President!

tim in santa rosa, ca   September 30th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

I think they are helping....in that we all get a great view of the prospective vice president.

What we have seen thus far....Palin has turned out to be yet another Republican empty suit.

Can someone explain to me why the Republican party always puts these kinds of candidates up?

Didn't they get the memo that one village idiot per decade is quite enough?

Laurie, Seattle, WA   September 30th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

I think it's time for the campaign to throw her into the deep end and really give us caring Americans a chance to evaluate her abilities & depth of understanding. So far she's sounding like a moose caught in the headlights. Give us a chance to see if McCain really means to put 'Country First' by picking her as lady-in-waiting. We have to see if there's more to her than we've seen. If not, God help us if they win the White House.

Mary   September 30th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

In general, no interviews done by Palin will help her. It appears to be a game of: What can she retain from the crib notes given to her by her handlers. If she can spew it out, in the right order or manner, she gets some brownie points. If not, further interview fiascos will occur. Palin's interviews do not AT ALL reflect a thorough understanding of important topics. The independent thought process is severely lacking. Only spewing out rehearsed lines, like an actor, sometimes fragmented and in the wrong order.

The VP debate will only reflect what she was able to retain by memorizing points and nothing else. Will her interview/debate performances be Oscar calibre or high school play level? It's still acting. This is more reflective of McCAIN'S POOR JUDGEMENT, rather than Palin's gross inability to be VP or President.

donald montgomery   September 30th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

we love palin

Rajeev, Oklahoma City   September 30th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Amidst the doom and gloom of a botched war and economy this is entertainment. I love it. She is pivotal in this 'Axis of Fun'.

Dave   September 30th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

I fell sorry for her Jack, she is showing what she is really made of. Just lot's of mouth and little lipstick. I blame McCain though, for putting her in that position. What a guy, All American should question McCain's judgement. Is this for country or politics.

Kevin in DC   September 30th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Jack,

What’s astounding is that none of the questions posed to Palin thus far have been, by any measure, intellectually challenging. Interviewers need do no more than put her in front of the camera and allow her to speak.

What would happen if Palin found herself being asked complicated policy and philosophical questions? What would happen to her talking points if she weren’t doing Q&A, but were instead engaged in something resembling a dialogue? Let’s hope we find out on Thursday, and I can’t wait; we need a good laugh after this week’s economic news.

Terri, Pasadena, CA   September 30th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Jack,

This self-proclaimed pitbull in lipstick has proven to be nothing more than a nervous poodle. I highly expect her to wet the floor on Thursday evening. She can’t make it through a Katie Couric interview with McCain sitting right next to her? How in the world will she get through a dabate with someone who has a grasp of the issues?

The sad part is, there are people in this country who will blame the big bag media, the gotcha journalism of a guy in a sandwich shop and anything else other than to admit that this woman is full of ideology and absolutely no knowledge of policy.

Re Palin's latest interview comedy routine.....Since when does CBS allow do-overs. And, since when do they allow the interviewee to be accompanied by her dad?

Dad – let he speak for herself.... what happens when you are gone and she takes over the family business?

I love Sarah Palin. I'm a Republican for Obama, and Sarah is helping deliver the election to Obama to give this country a chance. So I guess in a backwards sorta way, Sarah Palin is the best politician in the country...accidentally.

David R. Vancouver, WA   September 30th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

The more interviews she does, the better. It's only fair that the voters understand what they get in Palin. The failure of McCain to pick someone who can hold one thought long enough to finish a sentance has become painfully obvious.

Obama/Biden '08

Susan, Overland Park, Kansas   September 30th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Sarah Palin, who delivers a series of incoherent statements with winks, grins, hand gestures and tongue clicking, has become the Paula Abdul of politics. Perhaps we can get Ryan Seacrest to moderate Thursday's debate.

C Jackson   September 30th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

It depends on what you mean when you ask "helping her..?" In my opinion, it is helping her...helping her out of a job, and any since of dignity.

T Allen   September 30th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

John McCain disrepected all Americans when he asked her to be his Vice-President. He knew she was DUMB but he want to be elected so badly he will not only say anything but he will do anything to reach that goal.

Country First -what a joke it should say John McCain first and to the devil with the rest of the country.

Peter   September 30th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

I hope her interviews help her find her way back to her family in Alaska. Her children need her more than the country does.

Shannon in Topeka, KS   September 30th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Until recently, my vote was undecided between McCain and Obama. After watching Palin's interview with Couric, however, I will not vote for any ticket with Palin on it. These interviews sealed my vote for Obama.

Peggy Hellier   September 30th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

I find it incredulous that someone like Mark in Asherville could say Obama is no more qualified than Palin. Obama was in the Illinois State Legislature for 8 years and sponsored several significant pieces of legislation. Illinois has nearly 20 times the population of Alaska and of course that giant city to deal with. Obama has written several profound books that made it to the best seller list. I have seen NOTHING written by Palin. And I personally think 4 yrs as a U.S. Senator surpasses a lifetime as a small town mayor. Get some facts before you make such a stupic statement.

JustinA   September 30th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

In what respect Jack?

McGimmick's gimmick FAILED!   September 30th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

It's definitely helping me see how unqualified she is for the current job she has. If she thinks all she needs to do is sprew bitochy comments to hide the lack of understanding on critical issues is the way into the White House she got another thing coming.

I say send her back to her Country of Alaska where she and the AIP can celebrate their freedom and wave at the guy in the red house in Russia.

Dr. Assenni Debessai   September 30th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

McCaine should ashamed of himself. I see now why they call him a man with no temperament. McCaine do not lie to us saying "...I put first my country..." you did not put the country first. You put the country in dangerous path by choosing someone could not make a general plausable stament to a simple question.
It worries me to have these duo to assume the highest office in the land. God help us.

Debra Evans   September 30th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

I don't know if she's helping herself, Jack – but it makes me feel better everytime I hear her answer questions. Better about the Obama/Biden ticket winning that is. . . . .

Nothing can help the McCain Palin ticket. John has put the country at risk with his VP choice. After the hoopla the truth is starting to show. She is not ready. This dog will not hunt!!!!

Amani in NYC   September 30th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Palin's interviews are making me less enthusiastic about McCain. I wish she could just step out and let big leagues handle the situations that I personally believe that she can't, even though McCain keeps protecting and covering up for her vulnerability.

Vic Beazzo   September 30th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Even in the extremely controlled environments in which the Mccain campaign allows Palin exposure by the press, she still manages to discredit herself immensely. Either she is an idiot, or she just appears to be one in every single interview she gives, I'll go with the former. It's really sad just how many times Mccain has sold out his own values and the interest of the American people, in the interest of his suffering campaign. Picking Palin for vp however, was by far his most insulting move yet.

No McSame   September 30th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

I see Couric allowed Palin her lifeline...She got to phone her friend.

Really pathetic to see McSame sitting next to her in the Couric interview guiding her answers. Flat out sexist.

Christopher Chu   September 30th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

No. These interview helps me understand her better: she is wordy but not any ideas in what she says

hugo   September 30th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Whenever i try to focus on the issues ailing this administration and the economy, there is something to talk about Sarah Palin.Am sick of being distracted....

Bev   September 30th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Jack

Why don't you ask Bill Clinton, he has nothing but praise for her. If I was Hillary, I would be worried, I mean really worried (wink wink!). Even if Palin drowns at the debate, Bill will find a way to spin it positively. We all know now, the Clinton are supporing MaCCain..how sad!

Richie Rich   September 30th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

If Palin had the intelligence she got from College, she would cut her losses, and walk away from the campaign, because the Republican party has made her out to be someone the thought she was, and they have failed, due to her incompetence as a running mate for VP. If John McCain loses, here career in politics will be tarnished. If he wins, it will be a travesty.

Kate, CT   September 30th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

What if she's actually smarter than she appears, and this is all a smoke screen? She'll come out swinging in the debates, surprise us all, and make Biden look like a rank amateur.

NAH. She's in over her head.

Arch Stanton   September 30th, 2008 4:51 pm ET

They're not helping her... but they're revealling her to be pretty close to an eggplant, brain-wise, and that's helping the country by letting us know what we might be getting into if she became president. So I think we all owe Couric a great thanks for exposing this idiot before it's too late. And I'd like to thank Palin for doing the interviews, too. In fact, I think I'll send her fruit basket with a note saying "Every piece of fruit in this basket is your intellectual superior."

christine   September 30th, 2008 4:51 pm ET

Wow! I am relieved! I work in radio....you know; the station that plays Rush, and I was thinking that ALL middle America was in love with this woman, which scared the %$^& out of me!

I think the best characterization of this woman came the other day.....I dont remember where, but she was referred to as a "category 5" mistake. I'm glad that there are people here that see it. I was beginning to think I was the only one.

Heather   September 30th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

Are you kidding me? She presents herself as an even a bigger moron than George W! If she is elected as our Vice President, we can kiss the last little respect that the international community has left for the American government goodbye.

Barrack08 from NH   September 30th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

Cafferty it doesn't seem so. Here is a video that proves it:

Not only is she totally unqualified but what mind set is McCain working with. What is his problem? This is an erratic dangerous decision on his part. President of the United States? It shows me how qualified he isn't....

Jon   September 30th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

I think that post from "Megan" slipped by your moderator.

And by the way, could she be a bigger redneck? I would argue that no, she can't. She's an enormous redneck.
