Do you care how many cars John McCain owns?

The Cadilac CTS assembly line in Detroit, MI. One of McCain's thirteen cars.

FROM CNN's Jack Cafferty:

With just 43 days left until the presidential election, we've officially entered "silly season."

A new piece on Newsweek's web site points out the number of cars each of the presidential candidates owns.

John and Cindy McCain have 13 cars while Barack and Michele Obama have just 1. This is according to vehicle registration records. Two of McCain's cars - a Honda sedan and a Volkswagen convertible - are foreign-made... Even though he's said before that he only buys American.

The Democratic National Committee quickly pounced on this car issue and organized a conference call with United Auto Worker Union president Ron Gettelfinger. The UAW has endorsed Obama. Gettelfinger said on the call that the revelation about McCain's vehicles shows he is not being truthful with Americans. And he went on to say that owning these two foreign vehicles is undermining American autoworkers. The car McCain uses for personal business, by the way, is a 2004 Cadillac CTS, made by general motors.

Barack and Michelle Obama's only car is a 2008 Ford Hybrid Escape.

And why anybody cares about this is beyond me.

Here’s my question to you: Is the number of cars John McCain owns an important issue to you?

Interested to know which ones made it on air?

Josh writes:
Absolutely. In some ways, insight like this is a more important window into what these candidates really believe in. It is easy to talk "American" and get a rally of Harley-owners to rev their engines for you, but apparently not so easy to actually own an American car. Plus nothing says "one of us" like owning 13 cars. I don't own that many dress shirts.

Tom writes:
No, I really don't care how many cars he has or whether they are American- or foreign-made. I do care if this guy and his “mayor of 9000” running mate can run the country and keep us safe from all kinds of exterior threats. But he can't and, God forbid something were to happen to him, she certainly couldn't. God save us from the Savings and Loan guy (remember that?) and the "no bridge to nowhere for me, but could I just have the money” gal. Yuck.

Christopher writes:
Absolutely. I think that if you can own seven homes, 13 different cars and be married to a wife that's a beer heiress, you don't know what anyone in the middle class is going through.

Jack from Florida writes:
I could care less how many cars McCain has. What does bother me is that he continues to profess his support for Detroit but he goes out and buys foreign? McCain just seems to say whatever the crowd in front of him that day wants to hear.

John writes:
Cars, schmars. We are having this fierce debate over which one of the village idiots will save us from the dragon. Meanwhile the money changers are burning down the house.

Fred from East Moriches, NY writes:
You're absolutely right. Why should anyone care? McCain has every right to go down the highway with his 13 turn signals blinking, just like any other senior citizen.

Lamont writes:
The nerve. An Ivy League-educated black man with one house and one car? How elitist can you get?

I think so – it's not just the number of cars but the fact that he continues to lie to the citizens, saying he only buys American - maybe it's his senililty. After all, Cindy has to whisper in his ear most of the time what his answer should be. She'll be running the whitehouse, not John.

it is when you take into account all his homes, his wife's wealth, and his apparent lack of knowledge about money, economics, fiscal responsibility etc. scarey to have him in the white house and even scarier with his health to have Palin as vp

Yes as is the number of houses, the number of positions on deregulation, the number of faces he speaks out of, the number of competent VP picks he bypassed for Palin, and the number 0.33 – which is the approximate chance he has of finishing his first term according to the actuarial tables.

Not particularly. I did notice that two of the cars were reported to be hybrids though.

It shouldn't be too much of a concern for American citizens as it only translates into about 2 cars per house and many middle class people likely have the same ratio.

13 cars, an airplane to scoot around the state in, 9 homes and counting . . . it should be apparent why he can't relate to the average person. For example, he's promising a $5,000 tax credit for a $12,000 health insurance policy as if the commoners have a spare $7,000 laying around the house. His wife's outfit and jewelry on the night he accepted the nomination cost more than the average home. I'm so sick of the haves and have mores believing they know the struggles on Main Street. It's a game and an ego trip to them; it's life and death to us. Vote Obama.

Green is as green does. If he cares for the planet he will not own more cars than he really needs – and those cars will be fuel efficient. Otherwise he is simply a Republican.

No Jack, I really don't care how many cars he owns. I was actually a bit surprised that of all of them, only the Cadillac is what I'd consider a "money" car.

However, I do care that McCain seems to be exhibiting all the symptoms of the onset of Alzheimer's. I watched my father suffer with it for five years before he died two years ago, and onset sympoms are: trouble sleeping, belligerence, defensiveness, misspeaking, and confusion. McCain is showing us all of those symptoms every time he opens his mouth. On 60 Minutes last night, he looked drawn and ill, and his eyes were empty, a huge difference from his interview in Iraq earlier this year. He's deteriorating rapidly. What will happen then? Palin as President? She's Rove and Cheney's puppet, handpicked by them because they know they can pull her strings. We've had 7 1/2 years of them and they've taken our country down the path to ruin.

We need to vote smart. We need to vote for someone who can possibly restore our country to its previous glory. We need to vote for Obama and Biden.

The number of cars McCain has is only significant if one remembers that he married into this sort of wealth 30 years ago. It's not like he started some business or wrote a book or even won the lottery or something. He met a 24 year old heiress to a massive fortune at the age of 42 while he was cheating on his disabled wife, married her and into her wealth, used that money to get into congress and then Senate, and then spent his career doing very little for anybody accept the rich. It's not the cars-it's the why he has the cars that bothers me.

The media makes every aspect politicians’ life our business. Under normal circumstances his 13 cars wouldn’t bother me too much. But the fact him and the god damn GOP are trying to paint Obama as an elitist, now it bothers me. If that isn’t the pot calling the kettle black, I don’t know what is. What’s worse is that McCain says the economy is just fine, its fundamentally sound. With all the money he married into, I’m sure he doesn’t notice gas is costing him 300% more than it did when Bush took office.

Here’s the scariest part Jack…. 44% of the nation believes him.

The number of cars that John McCain owns is kind of important, because it shows his wealth compared to the majority of the rest of America. Someone with 8 houses and 13 cars has financial security and cannot possibly understand what some people are going through right now. And it's the fact that he said that he prefers to buy American, yet he owns foreign made cars as well.

Absolutely not! I'm more concerned by the multiple positions that Sen. McCain seem to own. First he was a DeRegulator, NOW he's a Regulator, He was the candidate of Experience, NOW he's the vanguard of CHANGE, Tax-cuts for the wealthiest was IMMORAL, NOW it's the ONLY way to make our economy work, He used to be a Republican, NOW HE'S A CORPORATE SOCIALIST. WILL THE REAL JOHN MCCAIN PLEASE STAND UP! THE ONLY THING THAT YOU HAVE GOING FOR YOU IS THAT YOUR SUPPORTERS WILL BE THE ONLY ONES LEFT WITH A JOB OR INFLUENCE TO MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE IN AN ELECTION.

Not really. I'd rather know why all this money the two campaigns are raising isn't going into something worthwhile, like balancing the budget. It's gotta be up to a good billion dollars total by now, right? It's a good start!

It's important to me Jack because McCain and the right wing have continuously tried to paint Obama as an "elitist."

A man with multiple cars and multiple homes...so many that he can't keep up with them, can hardly imply that his opponent (who owns one car and one home) as being out of touch with the regular people. It's just another example of the right wing's "Hypocritic Oath."

Ordinarily it would not matter to me in the slightest, but in this case where you have McCain and his ilk constantly labelling Sen. Obama as 'elitist' and 'out of touch', it irritates me to no end. I mean seriously?

  38. Laurence (Washington, DC)

Nope, not really. We should talk about how many homes he owns and doesn't know about. Or maybe how many times he continues to repeat the fundamentals of the American economy are sound. Or possibly how many bouts will he have with cancer before he potentially puts a Delta flight attendant in the White House beside him.

Good grief no! Personal issues don't matter (though by reading some of the posts here, I am beginning to wonder.) McCain's lack of insight into our economy, unwillingness to admit to the disastrous state of our infrastructure, educational system, and lack of being reasonable regarding our role in Iraq and policies with foreign governments is enough for me to not vote for him. His inability to remember where he stands on anything, and now amazingly is repeating Obama's statements word for word is ridiculous. He coughs up outrageous lies and expects the public to believe him. His choice of VP just proves how inept he really is, with no thought of the American people or this country we love.

I really don't care. However, it just points to the fact that someone as wealthy as he is could not truly have the ordinary American in mind. I think all McCain worries or thinks about are the rich, like most all the other Republicans. Please America don't fall for all the lies this man has espoused during this election. Four more years of a Bush crony would probably mean we would be taken over by the Chinese!

McCain has blatantly and falsely attacked Obama's position on new taxes. How many times need it be said that Obama is only going to raise taxes on those making $250,000 or more per year. That doesn't amount to affecting very many people. I think Joe Biden is right–if your are rich then you should make it your patriotic duty to not complain about paying a little more in taxes because you can afford it!

Yeah Jack. Especially if they are FAST cars! It goes along well with his campaign of being QUICK... quick and dirty with campaign smears, quick to decide on results that have lasting affects on people's lives such as the selection of Palin as President (not VP, but President), his quick decision to oppose the taxpayer bailout of AIG, his quick flop to change his mind the very next day, his quick and "well thought out(or so he thought) plan" to fire Christopher Cox, his quickness to whine when all the while he's been the mudslinger and when a little mud is thrown his way... he can't take it. Yeah Jack. Fast Cars... and a lot of them! But these shouldn't be Fast Times! McCain... use Cruise Control!

    Jack,

I don't care but I will say if John McCain doesn't know what kind of cars he drives or how many this man is very out of touch. It shows he doesn't even know his own life style much less our lives. I think John McCain is losing memory whether mixing up information on foreign affairs, doesn't know economy, and can't even get his own facts straight about his record. God help us if McCain gets in because we wil not know what is going on at all he will mix up the facts or lie his way through them which is sad.

He stands there calling Obama a celebrity and an elitist in his $520 loafers, and professes to only buy american made cars, and he's lying through his teeth about both statements. He is the prototype of a perfect politician. SMILE WHILE TELLING PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT TO HEAR, AND SHAKE THEIR HAND WHILE STABBING THEM IN THE BACK! I don't believe a word that comes out of McCains lying mouth.

I wouldn't typically except that he keeps referring to Obama as an elitist. I would like to know who is more elite: a 3rd generation West Pointer who married an heiress and owns multiple houses and cars, or a son of single mother who owns one of each, supported himself through college and graduate school, and recently paid off his school loans. McCain would have us believe that it is the latter, by virtue of the fact that he enjoys arugula.

Jack, they've already established that McCain just doesn't know what's going on in his personal life, and more important what he knows about the economy, the wars, health care, etc. I am much more concerned about his cognitive difficulties. That's not ageism. That is concern about mental capacity, whether you are 50 or 90. A man that was tortured and held for 5 1/2 years, as far as we know never had any PTSD therapy, has anger issues, is confused about where Spain is, wants to bomb Iran, etc. how many cars he has is the least of my worries.

Einstein said that we should make things as simple as we can just not simpler. Here is my suggestion for helping the US economy in the simplest of terms. First forget blame it is what it is. Secondly don't reward those that created this situation. Remember this $700 billion number everyone is talking about is not $700 billion once but each and every time Mr. Paulson wants it. There is no limit if congress raises the debt ceiling. So here is my solution. Take the number of taxpayers in the US divide into $700 billion and give every taxpayer in the US a check for that amount. I guarantee that solves the problems of 99% of all americans. If every household had that kind of money all the foreclosures and bad mortgages would be history. Let the wall street companies and corporate american fend for themselves and fail if they must.

Not really. However, it matters when he tries to paint Obama as an elitist (when Obama only owns ONE car), and it also matters when he lies, saying he only owns American cars, when he owns a Honda.

Yes, I care. I have one old, failing Chevy S-10 that I can barely afford to keep gas in, and he has, what, 13? Now I know why he has all those big oil buddies...that's one way to get a discount at the pump! Just another way he is out of touch with real people in this country.

And before some Republican puppet yells about the SUV that Obama rides in, if you check with the Secret Service, that is what they use consistently because it is easier to armor plate and probably what McCain and Palin drives - or have you even bothered to check? Or better yet, ask Arnold "The Terminator" Schwarzenagger why he drives a Hummer which gets maybe 6 miles per gallon? He's one of the Republican poster children, too.

Well Jack, he probably has at least one or two cars for every house he owns. Actaully though, I don't care because McCain has already proven to me that he will do or say anything to get elected. I'm sure he'll try to spin his way out of this just like he does everything else.

Not really. I just wonder if he actually puts gas in them himself. I fule one car to go to and from work, I imagine 15 are a little expensive. I'm sure that he needs the 15 cars to go in the 7 or 8 houses he has as well.

As a representation of his wealth and disconnect from us common folk, yes; he lost sight of the plight a looong time ago.

As someone enjoying his wealth like most of us would, no; who wouldn't?

I think he should retire and enjoy the rest of his time shuttling between all of his houses in them and leave the struggle to fix this mess up to us Dems.

I care because of the McCain campaign and GOP's hypocritical efforts to label Barack Obama as a rich, out of touch liberal elitist when he is anything but.

McCain is the pampered, rich, son and grandson of Admirals playboy who got where he is because of who his parents were.

McCain and his wife own 13 cars, 8 homes and have the gall to call Barack Obama, who was raised by his single mother and her lower middle class parents, elitist.

The successor to 2000's Straight Expres isn't a bus, it's a battle group of high priced vehicles owned by the McCains.

Don't forget the McCain's also own a Cessna Citation Excel, a midsize corporate jet! At least it's an American plane...

McCain could be riding around in a wagon pulled by a goat for all I care. He has no clue about the economy or what life among the ordinary working class is like. I've got enough to worry about ( making my house payment, car payment, gas, groceries, and the state of my 401k) to care about how many cars or houses Sen. McCain has.

No, I'm more worried about how I will pay the insurance on the 2 cars I have. John McCain's cars, houses and moneyare so out of reach and hard to grasp for "Real American's". He does not have a clue as to how most American's just try and get by and we all know that already. It's not his wealth that is an issue, it's that he lives in the world he's created for himself, not the one the rest of us live in. It doesn't matter if he rolls up his sleeves and tries to act like he knows how the "working class" lives and that he can relate to them. A lot of us just wonder why he always seems so angry all the time. Maybe it is true, money can't buy happiness. However, it might be nice to have a chance to try it for myself. I have two cars and struggle to pay for them, and for the gasoline, and pay the mortgage on one house, and he has 7. He's not a bit like me. He's a stuffy, rich whit guy masquerading as a middle class Joe. He's so out of touch...no wonder he doesn't know how many cars or houses he has.

    September 22, 2008 at 2:47 pm |
  104. Anne/Seattle

Yes. The money he and his wife have that buys the houses, the cars, the plane, Cindy's designer clothes and their lifestyle, separate them dramatically from the day to day financial challenges of most Americans. John's heroism and military service and Cindy's volunteer work do nothing to create an understanding of what it's like to lose a job or a home or to be burdened with taxes that pare down a make do salary. Without empathy John will always be shortsighted when dealing with America's economy. And should Ms. Palin need to take over the presidency, her lack of empathy for anyone who doesn't think like her will keep her blind to the needs of the rest of us. A McCain administration would be a fiasco for the average American.

    Jack,
After careful thought, I do care how many cars the man owns. I care that he owns 7 or 8 homes, 13 cars, thinks middle class is somewhere around 250 million a year. It porves beyond a shadow of a doubt that he has no clue as to what it is like as an average American.

I don't care how many cars he has. You can't make money on cars.
Very seldom do they appreciate up.
If he has a rich wife that good for him. If you're alluding that Obama has fewer cars, that's too bad. He should have married someone with money. I wish I did.
I don't hear anybody complaining that Bill and Hillary have too much money. They're worth a 100 million. This is a typical liberal sarcastic type attack on anybody that they can stir up trouble other than their type. Come on CNN pick something that worthwile meaning.

I would argue that McCain's autos and real estate disqualify him to name anyone as an elitist. His fortunes are also symbolic of the economic mess we have with very rich Americans and Americans who are barely making it on their income (or lack of it).

Well I think the question is , which one of the two candidates would you trust to drive you home in heavy rush hour traffic in one of those cars. A 40 something fit guy or a 70 something old guy who has been known to fall asleep in meetings. John McCain reminds me of a car I had once . On the one hand, it teally doesn't matter how many cars McCain and his family has as long as they do right by the rest of us. since he is grossly failing in that regards and continously tries to poortray Barack as the elitist, it truly does matter as it shows whohe is more likely to connect with and look out for! 117. Jim Kahn from Portland, Oregon

What’s important is that McCain knows…or even remembers how many cars he owns. If he wasn’t quite sure about the number of houses, does he have to be reminded about the number of cars? It also triggers other questions, simple ones such as what else does he have to be constantly reminded about? How about “What time is it?” and “What day is it?” While some of you might think this is funny, it’s not very comforting to realize that there are those out there who calmly and confidently believe that he is actually capable of running this country! Will he have to be constantly reminded who we’re friends with and who we’re not? Of course, with any luck, if he is elected, he’ll simply forget where the red button is!

The good thing about all this Jack is that News Week discovered this fact and they didn't have to rely on John McCain telling them how many cars he owned.

This shouldn't be a concern for the lower or middle class American who has trouble filling up their gas tanks......

after all, McCain will make sure that they will have all the oil they need by drilling off shore IN HURRICANE-RAVAGED waters which will allow oil speculators to continue to unfairly increase oil prices and make it even less affordable for single car owners to fill their tanks.

    September 22, 2008 at 3:05 pm |
  135. Stacy from Fairfax, VA

The problem isn't the number, necessarily. The issue is whether McCain knows how many cars and houses he has. People who are that rich are completely out of touch with America.

If you ask the average American how many cars or houses they have they will answer one, maybe two. They don't need to check with their staff and get back to you with an answer.

Dear Jack: Because he was here in car country and lied about all his cars being American made, shows he was lying to UAW members here in Michigan on purpose in order to secure their vote. My esteem for John McClone has really gone down over the last 3 years. He has continually sold his soul in order to win – it's sad to watch.

    September 22, 2008 at 4:06 pm |
  145. Carol, Quincy, MA

Yes. He wants to continue to paint Obama as an elitist. He also went to Michigan and lied about only buying "American".

McCain can stick all his cars up his ass.

    September 22, 2008 at 4:07 pm |
  147. lynnej

Yes it matters because of the elitist tag that he has painted on Senator Obama.

He has 13 to Senator Obama's 1. This speaks volumes to me because it tells me that he is further out of touch with us average joes.

I bet since he didn't know how many homes he has or much less what cars he drives, he hasn't seen a car insurance notice. Because if he had, he'd be up in arms about what they actually charge.

But since he is a spoiled rich guy never having to want for nothing and married to an heir to a $100 million fortune, I guess he doesn't care about the cost.

    September 22, 2008 at 4:08 pm |
  148. BM

Yes! I've only owned thirteen in my whole lifetime and he wants people to believe that he can relate to the average american. Why doesn't anyone mention his first wife? Does she even own one?

  149. Uche, Harrisburg, PA

Its important Jack. He is supposed to be a maverick politician who reaches across the aisle. He is maverick enough to own more cars than he actually needs, and he had to reach across the oceanic aisle to obtain european and asian cars

  150. Kim, Dodge City, Kansas

Aren't we getting tired of the absurdly rich trying to get us to believe that just because they have more money than the rest of us, that they are better equipped to run the country, or that they are smarter than anyone else? McCain is an elitist in the extreme, no matter how you cut it.

    September 22, 2008 at 4:09 pm |
  151. Sophia

    YES!
Only because the man has the gall to call his opponent elitist.
    Give me a break!
However, I must say the man is smart.
At least he had the brains to marry rich. Now he doesn't have to worry about whether his social security $$ will buy most things like us ordinary Americans.

    September 22, 2008 at 4:10 pm |
  152. Francie - Greenville,

Absolutely I care how many cars McCain owns. Owning a car is a
privilege, not something to take for granted – as he seems to do.
Is there anything in his life he "treasures?"

Anyone with that nonchalant, uncaring attitude – not knowing how many houses, or cars! – would carry that attitude into the other parts of his life, and end up being very complacent. No thanks.

We need a Pres with HEART - who CARES – and cares deeply about us, the country, the universe.

  153. Hope M. Madisonville, KY

What's important to me is not how many cars but how many lies
he feels he has to tell in order to pander for more votes. He and
Sarah Palin just keep lying and lying. Is that what Americans want?
Another liar for President? This is just another instance that shows
McCain's character and trustworthiness have gone down hill since
the 2000 campaign. The straight talk express has hit the ditch.

I'm not an autoworker, but if I were, I'd be a bit upset (really pissed off) over being out of work thanks to policies John McCain had oversight on while chairing the Commerce Committee. I drive my '50 Merc whenever I have to drive and not use public transpotation. It has served me well and still gets appreciative glances from the ladies....well maybe not beauty queen phonies....It also gets 22 mpg. like most cars, even today.

The straight talk express is truly out of touch. McCain has the gall to call his opponent an elitist. He needs to check with webster dictionary for the meaning of elitist and check out his lifestyle and admit to the American people that he has made a false statement.

  166. Alex, Winter Springs Florida

If anything, knowing tha Senator McCain owns 13 cars would make me more likely to vote for him. His purchases are what drives the economy and employs American workers. The Democratic Party, and to a lesser extent the media, need to stop criticizing an elite status. Elitism is bad; being elite is laudable.

If how many cars McCain has is relevant, lets find out how much he spends on gas monthly. Will He be willing to list them on E-bay to raise money for the wall street bailout plan? Is the straight talk express included in the 13 vehicles for that matter? To me Mr. Obama has always looked like the bicycle type.

Well, I don't know, you tell me... Does it matter McCain doesn't know how many houses he has? Does it matter that the average American can't hardly KEEP their house, let alone need 2 hands to count how many they own? Does it matter that most Americans can hardly keep their cars moving down the street because of the absurdly high gas prices? And, does it matter that with the help of this guy, our world is going to turn into an oven? John McCain alone is responsible for 50% of the Green House gas emissions! This guy is so detached from our "strong" economy! And there is no wonder why he can't relate to us, and he CANNOT and WILL NOT help us either!

Yeah- it ranks right up there with John McCain's thoughts on Obama's celebrity status...

when are these two going to start earnestly discussing the real issues that are affecting everyone's lives – like oil, jumping $16 dollars in ONE DAY? As I've asked before...is it too late to start over?

  173. Sean, Pittsburgh

NO! This man fought for our country, was a POW for 5 years..in my opinion he deserves 20 cars. Why would this even be an issue. OH i know, because the media loves OBAMA! The media destroyed Hillary Clinton and now they are doing the same to John McCain and Sarah Palin. How about we talk about the real issues. We have an economy that most would say is in a recession, we have a war going on, gas prices are too high and people are worried about how many cars John McCain has. McCain/Palin is the real change this country needs!

    September 22, 2008 at 5:42 pm |
  174. John

Does it really matter how many cars John McCain has. If you can afford the insurance; have as many as you want. I don't care if Barack Obama has ten cars, I care about what is going on in this country . We need a congress who can work together to solve problems and be bipartisan. Working together instead of trying to satisfy self-interests, adding earmarks to bills just to get them passed and arguing over miniscule details about peoples personal lifes could create a rejuvenated and great country. I am a strong believer in term limits and maybe they should start in Congress, not just the presidency. New faces, new ideas, newcongress not a bad idea.

I hope there is a witness to the conversation. Let's remember she's a bit pull and the Republican nominee is a hot head. Between the two of them we may end up in WWIII. 178. Allen L Wenger

No, the number of cars is not important, but what he said in Michigan, is. He said in Michigan, that he only owned cars built in America and that is almost true. 11 of his 13 cars were built in America, but he couldn't quite tell the truth on this subject either.

    September 22, 2008 at 5:45 pm |
  179. Dan

my vote has nothing to do with how many cars the man has. He can have 100 and it means nothing. what about their wives shoes, is that going to be a issue. The amouint of cars has nothing to do with how they will run the country. They will add a airplane, a helo, and a bulletproof limo to who ever wins the election.

I don't care about John McCain period. He is preaching a sermon he doesn't believe in. He has houses the ordinary american cannot favim having, I'm sure its the same with cars. How can he understand what the middle class is all about. We don't need someone like him trying to lead the country-TRYING because he certainly can't do it without a lot of help, I don't even want to think about his choice for VP helping him make decisions. The whole Republican party is so scary, what we have endured for the past eight years is beyond belief and anyone who would think of putting another Republican in office is just not part of what the rest of us are living!!!

It shows how out of touch with middle America he really is. Smiling and blinking at us (while telling whoppers that are hateful and divisive) doesn't cut it. And as for Palin...more of the same, only sneakier and more vicious.

  183. Moses

It matters to me because I think it's about time we elect a president not just based on the fact that he is who americans want to sit and drink beer with. Here we have one candidate who is so rich, he probably doesn't know how many cars he has, plus the fact that some of those cars were made outside the US. And on the other hand, we have a candidate who has just one American made hybrid car...Things that are important to me are the economy and the environment. I think one of these candidates will encourage alternate energy, which will create jobs for Americans, plus use American made products.
The way a candidate handles his own life, is a reflection of where his/her heart is and what they are likely to do as President.

Yes it is, Jack. Because I want to know if he is properly supporting the auto-workers of America And JOBS in America!!. So, we need to not only know if he has a car in every garage of every homes he owns, but are they American made cars, as well.

Does he drive himself in those cars, or is he providing jobs for people who need work.? Does he pay a fair wage, or does he have to hire someone to "do a job an American won't do".

It's important if he wants to convince me that he "feels my pain". I have one car and it is over 10 years old. I live in Michigan so any chance I have of getting a newer model isn't in the cards. Hey, how about the taxpayers buying one for me? Or does the fact that my checkbook balances count me out.

  191. Ron Hood River, Oregon

That in its self NO! But what it does show, along with all the houses, expensive clothes, private schools , is that McCain is out of touch with the vast majority of Americans. I realize he couldn't have his cars when he was a POW and I'm sure he will spin that as he did with the houses, but there are Americans actually hurting right now. This is not class warfare as some would say but reality! The question now is, which candidate would help the majority of Americans, not just the top 2%?

As long as he isn't referring to anyone else as "elitist" I don't care at all how may cars he owns. But when an individual who owns 7 homes and whose wife owns her own private jet begins to talk about another individual having a small fraction of his net worth ... all bets are off.

I don't care about much, Jack, but I do care when I'm being lied to. And for this guy to call Barack Obama a celebrity, when he himself owns as many cars as Jay Leno, well that's just the golden lie of the century.

Honda is Reliable. I don't care if the McCains CHOSE to buy foreign-made vehicles. I believe Senator McCain honestly thought he only bought American-made cars. I mean, the Rich (people with over $5 million) can't be expected to memorize every make & model they own, or remember how many houses they've bought.
I bet the last time he drove one of his 15 cars down to the Exxon to fill 'er up, he bought a lottery ticket & scratched it with the 1 cent copper profile of Abraham Lincoln. He must have thought he was a winner when the game card spelled out P-A-L-I-N. His desperate last minute CHOICE of Palin is disturbing because he knew she was his only way back in the Presidential Race.

  206. Lisa from AZ

I think the real question is Senator McCain to able to safely drive a car at his age? Or does he have a driver or does his much younger wife drive him around! All joking aside, I do not think the number or cars matters, but any number more than 2 does suggest once again that he is out of touch with the regular US citizen.

  207. Joanne Slater Santee, Ca

It's not his cars...it's the whole package. I am more concerned about the way he lies about who he really is. I find it hard to believe that he really wants to limit payouts to the CEO's at $400.000.00 when he obviously had no concerns that his wife spends $310.000.00 on an outfit for the conventions. Start at home.

The idea that McCain has at minimum 10 times what most Americans have shows how out of touch the man is. In my neighborhood, two families live in an apartment, not a self owned home and we share one car and take the bus most of the time. i think everyone should know about McCains car situation....country first he says but what do you know he has forien automobiles...this is just the start of the Mccain lies and deception that is to come with a McCain administration..hes to rich to know whats best for the common blue collar worker.

Its not how many cars he has thats the problem, its that he once again said he has done something he hadn't.

If you pride yourself on buying only american owned and built. If you don't do that. Then you have to lose the pride routine.

Psh... Nope. I really don't. But I guess it does give him a bad image in some ways. I mean, you sort of expect your next prez to be... more focused on helping the nation and the Americans in it. It's sort of distracting when you know your president has enough money to buy as many cars as he likes and can afford a jet, God knows how many homes and all the other luxuries dear Johnny has.

Who cares how many cars McCain has, or if they are foreign. My household has 4, one for each member, and 50% are foreign. If you think about it, the more cars he buys, the more he contributes to the economy.

Yes, this is extremely relevant in an economy where people are struggling not to lose their homes, cars, have enough food to eat and access medical care. This is extravagant spending and is a disgusting display of weath. It proves how out of touch McCain is with the majority of Americans.

    September 22, 2008 at 6:12 pm |
  238. Kyle Tolbert

Its not about what kind of cars he owns its the fact that he owns 13 cars. McCain tries to associate himself with middle class America but I have yet to see an average American who owns that many cars.

The number of automobiles John and Cindy McCain owned is a symbol of their wealth. So many people in the United States can hardly afford the gas, maintenance and car insurance for a single car. I find it an emblem of excess, and a reminder that McCain's America and mine are two very different cultures.

Yes, as it relates to his understanding or non-understanding of Main -street America. How can someone who owns 7 homers and 13 cars have a clue what it is like to have to repay loans. Out of touch he is!

    September 22, 2008 at 6:15 pm |
  263. Tara

As an entire issue..."no" I do not care how many cars John McCain owns. But as a presidential candidate whose job it will be to represent the people and empathize with the majority's situation and current financial crisis; then this just furthers my doubt in his ability to do so. I think someone should ask McCain like they did to George H.W. Bush during the debates back in '92, how have these current times efffected him personally.

    September 22, 2008 at 6:15 pm |
  264. Les Lyon

The number of cars McCain owns doesn't matter at all to me Jack.
The truth of the matter is that I've got a gas guzzling Chevy pickup that I would be glad to sell him.

Thirteen cars, seven houses, how many lobbyists on his campaign staff?? Political choice sole reason for vice presidential candidate, regulator, oops de-regulator, and on and on. Don't you see a common thread here? War hero - yes. In touch with the American people and qualified to be president - absolutely not!

  266. c hunter

yes it matters, if he's trying to act like he can relate to me and other middle class americans. i have one house almost in foreclosure and two cars in pawn to title companies. if he's experiencing all this, then he can say that he can relate!, ps. how about selling some of those homes and cars and personally help somebody else!

    September 22, 2008 at 6:26 pm |
  267. Aaron

Only slightly. I recognize that this is a small example of the fact that Obama is the real "just like you" candidate. However, it is still a silly way to argue that a candidate would not be a good president. Why should we judge someone by how many cars he has.

    September 22, 2008 at 6:26 pm |
  268. Tina-Montgomery, AL

I could care less how many cars or houses he has until he starts leveling claims of elitism at Barack Obama. It amazes me that McCain has the nerve to attach such a label to Barack, when he himself is the very poster boy for elitism! I don't understand how anyone can continue to support this man when all his campain is based on is lies, rhetoric, and more lies. He will say anything to get elected, and leave us all hanging out to dry just like his predecessor. Are we (those voting Republican) that dumb?

    September 22, 2008 at 6:27 pm |
  269. Bill Ohio

Jack no, I don't care how many car's McCain has but considering he forgot Spain was in Europe it might be interesting to set him loose in a grocery store parking lot with a key and ask him to find "his" car.

I would pay to see that.

    September 22, 2008 at 6:27 pm |
  270. Elle from Pullman, WA

No, the number of cars the McCain's own doesn't matter to me, but what does matter to me is the fact that McCain seems to just tell people what they want to hear instead of abiding by what he says. So what if he owns 13 cars? But if he's been telling Auto workers he only buys American and it's proved (as it has been) that he doesn't, then it shows a big character flaw on his part. It shows that he's simply trying to get elected and I, personally, think that's shameful politics.

  271. Bola

I thought we already cover this. Mccain is the ultimate liar. And that as been confirmed several times. He is a lobbyist and will say anything to get elected.

  272. Sharon, Oklahoma City

Yes! It does matter...It seems lately that the real John McCain is finally being revealed…opportunistic, egocentric and liar seems to fit the mold…13 cars, I don’t know how many houses and let’s not forget…hypocrite! How can he really understand what mainstream America is up against?

He is the epitomy of excess....!

    September 22, 2008 at 6:27 pm |
  273. Ryan from Warrensburg, Missouri

    Jack,
As someone who owns eleven fewer cars than John McCain and also supports American jobs, I feel that this is an important issue. There is no way that he can possibly relate to the average person with his lifestyle. He used these vehicles to brag about “only buying American”, when the fact is, he supports outsourcing and showed the nation by outsourcing some of his transportation needs.

    September 22, 2008 at 6:28 pm |

    September 22, 2008 at 6:28 pm |

John McCain said he only buys American. Here is another example of the same thing we hear all of the time. What he says doesn't match what he does. I don't think he understands that there are people who can't even afford one car, let alone the gas to put in it!

    September 22, 2008 at 6:28 pm |
  276. Judy Blume

It's OK if he has a lot, some of us do. But don't lie about it.

He could have easily replaced that comment with an, "I buy mostly American cars." I can accept a leader with a richer lifestyle, but not a lie.

Yes, I do care about the materialistic mind set of John McCain. Who needs 13 cars? If you had 13 adults in that household each needing a car, then maybe I would understand that.
He is not in touch with the middle class citizens. Regardless of whether or not he was born into wealth. The fact remains, he is not in touch with the majority population of the US. If he had a week to walk in our shoes then he would be able to relate and see why we are voting for change. Makes no sense at all!!!!
Take the 700 billion dollars and help those that are losing their homes so they can catch up on their mortgage by paying the banks. Then the banks will be out of trouble.

Who is the elitist ?when senator Mcain owns 7 houses and 13 cars and a Plane.Average americans like me cannot fill up my car to go and look for a job and yet the war vet is living large.Does he deserve it of cause yes.. if he worked hard for it ,However its hard for me to think he will be able to stand for my needs a low income worker..Poor Obama is in one car like the rest of us .So lets elect Obama for president..

    September 22, 2008 at 6:28 pm |
  280. karen

I feel that McCain having thirteen cars is an outrage. My family of five cannot even afford to buy one car for my husband to get back and forth to work. He recently returned from his second tour in Iraq and because of medical bills that Tricare won't cover, we are having trouble living paycheck to paycheck. Obama having one car is more realistic to a typical American family lifestyle. This is one more topic in which Obama is more in touch with the American working class.

    September 22, 2008 at 6:28 pm |
  281. Maria Green

Who cares how many either one has! The McCains, no doubt, are very rich and if they can afford the cars, so be it. I am so sick of all the bickering between McCain and Obama either in speeches or in campaign commericals. Both need to stick to issues and talk about solutions. Grrrr!

The next America president? He is just a senate with 13 cars, by the time he become a president he will be boasting of 30 cars; and that would be one car for each day in the month. Truly he cares, a good pacesetter. Please do not let Lou Dobbs know about his two foreign cars. He will crucify him.

    September 22, 2008 at 6:28 pm |
  284. LaThaniel

I do not believe that the number of cars that McCain owns is a big deal...at least not an issue that people should base their votes on. Personally, I have plenty of other reasons not to vote for McCain. However, this is one more premise that shows that John McSame is out of touch and a representative of the elite. Maybe we should put the Senator in one of his foreign cars in the southeast and see if he can find some gas, I know I can't.

    September 22, 2008 at 6:28 pm |
  285. Cheryl Anderson

Im in nashua nh. I could care less how many cars he has! I do not however care how he tells the people in michigan how proud he is to only buy American made cars when it is a fact that 2 of those cars are not made in the U.S.A..

    September 22, 2008 at 6:28 pm |
  286. Andrew

It does matter to me. It shows his false character. He says "country first," but he owns foreign cars? 7 houses plus 13 cars and he has the audacity to call someone else elitist? Something doesn't match up.

I'm not going to base a vote on something like this, but it definitely reinforces my bad impression of him.

    September 22, 2008 at 6:28 pm |
  287. Danielle Young

The number of cars combined with the number of house paints the perfect picture of his tendancy towards excess. Having such a person in control of our country leads me to believe he cannot relate to the general population. He inspires a major sin...GREED.

Well, since you mentioned it, I does cause me to pause. I have a 1995 pick-up truck in which the need-gas-light has been on for months; I need new brake shoes and my car insurance is due. And did I mention I haven't been able to find a full-time job in 24 months and my mortgage is three months past due. A person that has only one car, is someone that I think is more in tune with the financial crisis I'm going through. That is in contrast to someone who can . afford to put gas in 13 personal cars. Yes, it matters, it shows, I believe, that John McCain in his heart-of-heart has no idea how those of us who are unemployed and/or underemployed are suffering. But what matters most is the lie, that he only buys American, when what's sitting in the garage tells a different story.

yes it matters to me. I am still driving a 1992Buick and having a hard time keeping up with the inflation on food, Medical Supplies, Health Insurance and gasonline, electric and gas bills. Mr McCain, show us where you think you are on the same "Plain" as the working man.

    September 22, 2008 at 6:36 pm |

Normally you wouldn't bother with such trivial matters. The problem is that somewhere between now and election day the McCain camp will no doubt accuse Obama of being elitist, having no clue regarding working class people. Another John Kerry! How ironic!! A presidential candidate with a rich wife.

Only to the extent that it illustrates the difference between us.

I have no doubt that if Barack crashed his only car, he'd be able to afford a car service or at least a rental to get where he needs to go.

But Mr. McGoo would have 12 more cars to go through before getting to that.

He's totally out of touch with the way most Americans live.

This is just further evidence of how far removed Sen.McCain is from the average working middle class American and the financial struggles we face everyday. I guess you would need 13 cars if you have 9 driveways to fill. But what would I know... I'm just another middle class American who according to Mr. McCain makes $5 million a year!!!

13 cars! And he lied about them!?! I don't care if he owns 40 foreign cars, but don't say you would never buy them because it's politically expedient to say so and then go and buy the cars. We can't beleive a word he says. The sad part is that he probably generously bought many of those cars for others, but it's still rediculous. 1 car is enough. He disgusts me again.
