What does it mean when Palin won’t cooperate with legislative investigation?

Palin fired her public safety commissioner and is now under investigation.

Palin fired her public safety commissioner and is now under investigation.

FROM CNN's Jack Cafferty:

Governor Sarah Palin is being investigated by lawmakers in her home state of Alaska. At issue: Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan and whether he was fired because he refused to pink slip a state trooper who divorced Palin's sister.

But Palin is refusing to cooperate with the investigation. Shades of President Bush. Embarrassing investigation? Just refuse to cooperate and claim it's all someone else's fault.

Palin says the probe's been hijacked by the Obama campaign for political gain. But Monegan was fired and the investigation begun long before Palin was named to the Republican ticket.

The Obama campaign denies the accusation.

McCain's people say Palin will not cooperate with the investigation because it is "tainted." They insist Monegan was fired because of insubordination.

Palin has not been subpoenaed, but last Friday Alaska lawmakers voted to subpoena her husband, several aides and telephone records. This kind of stuff may also explain why Sarah Palin is reluctant to do interviews or news conferences.

Here’s my question to you: What does it mean that Gov. Sarah Palin is refusing to cooperate with the investigation into the firing of her public safety commissioner?

Interested to know which ones made it on air?

Marie from Minnesota writes:
This woman is ridiculous. She won't answer questions from the media. She won't answer questions from voters and she won't answer questions related to this investigation. It is so obvious that this woman is not prepared at all to be V.P. At some point the American public deserves to have their questions answered.

Eileen writes:
Well what else can it mean? Her handlers know she has something to hide, so let's all blame the Democrats. So what if the facts are that the Republicans are the majority who opened the investigation?

Bruce from St. Paul, Minnesota writes:
For the same reason Rove, Cheney, and anyone remotely connected to them will not honor congressional subpoenas. The same reason Nixon would not cooperate with the Watergate investigators. The same reason Bush would not produce, and in fact destroyed his Air National Guard records. Laws are for suckers like us.

Sasha writes:
Palin failing to cooperate with the investigation, along with the McCain campaign not letting her do any more interviews or press conferences on her own, says there are some question marks about her and her situation. Where did the "straight talk express" go on the McCain-Palin campaign?

Pablo from Charles from Town, WV writes:
It means they need more time to put lipstick on the pig, bulldog or whatever animal they are trying to disguise before the American people can see it for what it really is. My guess is it is a weasel.

Debra writes:
It means she is better prepared to be vice-president than any of us thought. Following in the footsteps of our current V.P., she has been taught the values of "executive privilege" and is apparently a quick learner.

Sounds like she is running!! She is running from the troopergate investigation as well as answering questions from media and town halls. How can this be in an political campaign ? this goes to show that McCain judgement is flawed. who picks a flawed candidate and markets them as a reformer??

jack, it means she got something to do with it, and she is afraid that she may get caught by contradicting herself in some of the questions. obviously, she will try to let this issue get postponed till after the election.

It has always been my contention, "if you have nothing to hide bring it out into the open". Obviously Governor Palin, one would assume, has something to hide. Candidates records should be open to everyone and if there is a chance that the Governor overstepped her authority for personal reasons we need to know.

It means that she knows she is guilty! First her staff were going to go to court to avoid testifying, now she wants to refuse to cooperate! What will she do if they subpoena her? From all reports cronyism and vengance were her trademarks, so much for reaching across the aisle! It exemplifies rhe poor judgement McCain exhibits time after time, starting with his decision to remain a POW rather than accept release for medical reasons. That decision gave the N. viets time to break him and allowed him to make anti american propaganda for them.

It means that she is just like the folks we are trying to get rid of. Hiding stuff BEFORE the election....not good. Shows what would happened if THEY got in office. Didn't Bush/Cheney, et. al, behave the same way? Glad you're back Jack, Sorry about your loss .

It means that we have more of the McSame Republican arrogance – people who think they are above the law and are subject to no rules, regulations or standards of conduct – let alone any moral or ethical values. Four more years people. Wasn’t the last eight enough. Twelve years of McBush will destroy your country if you can’t see that you deserve what you get. Unfortunately I, and the other reasonably intelligent people who’s eyes are open will be dragged down with you.

It means that she thinks that she is above the law and does not have to answer to anyone for anything. By not cooperating proves that she has something to hide. The National Enquire has released many secrets that Sassy Sarah is hiding. Remember – the Enquire is the paper that proved OJ owned those Bruno shoes with a picture. Let them dig into Sarah for a while. In her interview with Charlie Gibson she appeared cocky. She will dig her own grave, just give her time.

Generally, when someone refuses to cooperate, they have something to hide, or are just plain guilty. I just don't trust this one (Palin that is), Jack. I've been on board with Obama before he announced he was running for President. I still am. Somthin's gotta give!!!

I have heard very little substantive about Sarah Palin. What I have heard is that she is a reformer who makes government accountable and is not afraid to take on unethical politicians. It seems strange that she is not afraid to be the conducter on the "Get rid of Unethical Politicians" train as it rolls over others but she does her best to derail investigations into her personal ethics. Her refusal to cooperate means she believes the rules are different for her.

It means voting for McCain/Palin is a vote for more of the same. Haven't we had enough of leaders who believe they are above the law? Since she won't cooperate, you know darn well she's hiding something.

Jack, if Palin has nothing to hide she would be fully cooperating with the investigation......she along with the Mc Cain campaign bigwigs are using all their power to keep the investigation at a stand still so the American voting public won't know the error in judgment she made...and if she didn't do it i refer back to my opening line.

By the way I couldnt care one way or another, and I really don't think the American public cares either, because the majority of them are not voting for her either just like i'm not.

It doesn't show me anything that I didn't already know. This woman is willing to do and say anything to get her ticket elected. She has lied repeatedly about the bridge to nowhere and the McCain campaign has made a habit of lying in their ads. It is no suprise that Palin lied to the investigators when she said that she would be willing to meet with them regarding troopergate.

  24. Jim, from Las Vegas

It means she is listening to her new advisors and trying not to step in it any deeper than she already has. It has a negative image, but an unguarded comment could mean disaster for McCain. This will be interesting to watch play out.

    Jack,
It simply means that all of this Palin talk about being a "reformer" and someone who will bring "real change" to Washington is all just TALK. Not cooperating in this investigation means that Sarah Palin is a fast learner and has already learned from the current Administration that once in office they are above the law. Am I the only one who is just sick and tired of being lied to and taken advantage of by those who have been elected to serve us?!

It's an amazing flip-flop that Palin once “welcomed the investigation" and now that the pressure is on, she refuses to cooperate. It is sheer arrogance on Palin's part to think she can hide behind the McCain campaign and expect to be exonerated for gross ethical violations simply because she is the VP nominee. When you refuse to cooperate in an investigation only after first supporting it means she knows an ethical violation occurred and won’t take responsibility for her actions.

    Hi Jack. Welcome back.

It means quite simply that Palin is not a law-and-order-type of person. It is okay for her to abuse power, but not okay for those in Washington or elsewhere to do the same. However, once she arrives in Washington, should she win, then it will suddenly be okay there, too.

Palin will become part of the problem that is pervasive among those in power. She will be as corrupt as the rest.

We need to call her out on this! Stop treating Palin with so much sympathy out of fear of being sexist. She wanted to be in the game. Now that she'd in it, she can expect the same scrutiny as everyone else.

It means that she fired her public safety commissioner because he did not fire her brother -in-law. Palin's refusing to cooperate is hurting no one but herself. If she has nothing to hide or if she feels she did nothing wrong she should cooperate. If the McCain-Palin ticket becomes so lucky as to win the Presidency and Vice Presidency history will have been made for the oldest president, the first woman vice president and the impeachment of a vice president. Jack; why on earth if you are innocent wouldn't you cooperate, especially if you are a governor? What it appears is that there is more to the story than meets the eye. It means that perhaps if the whole story comes out, Mrs palin will not be as likeable especially to her base. It may mean that McCain's judgement will appear defective. Both have admitted that he truelly only picked her as a political stunt to win.

It means that she thinks that she is above the law. Palin admits that she had her husband call the safety commissioner to complain about her sister's husband. Palin should have filed a police report if she was really concerned. And by not using the legal system to try to resolve this so called problem, she looks guilty of abusing her power by trying to resolve this so called problem by having her husband and staff attempt to intimidate the commissioner.

Jack, I'd suggest it is because she wants to delay this thing until after the election since it would appear that there could be some truth behind the rumors. It's one warning signal among many. When Governor Palin's aides are not allowed to testify in "Troopergate" or speak to the media, when Governor Palin's appointments to important and high paying positions in the State of Alaska reads reads like a Who's Who from her high school class vs. a Who's Who of the most qualified candidates, when she is the only 1 of the 4 Presidential and Vice Presidential nominees who is delaying release of her tax records, and when she continues to espouse she's against earmarks when she's accepted $200 million in them, then those who choose to vote for her are deserving of the second coming of George W. It means that she knows that she will be exposed to either redicule for her immature behavior if she tells the truth or to being revealed as a liar if she doesn't tell the truth. I strongly recommend that she continue with the sleazy instructions that Rove has given her and stonewall, stonewall and stonewall! Remenber the adage, " It is better to remain silent and be thought of as a fool than to speak and confirm it".

Jack, I believe in the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. But I also believe that if you are innocent, you should have nothing to hide. When an elected official, be it a small town mayor or the president of the United States, starts hiding and deflecting, that leads me to believe that “where’s there’s smoke there’s fire”.

She stated that she would cooperate a few days ago only to rescind that offer blaming Obama’s campaign despite the fact the investigation started long before she was part of the campaign. Blaming, cover-ups, and non-transparency lead me to believe that she is hiding something.

I am not a political pundit, but I am a thinker (thanks Glenn Beck)…

Usually it means you have something to hide. She may have been able to get away a few shenanigans in a low-focus investigation in Alaska. Now that it's been brought to the national attention, slipping out of it won't be that easy. So, it certainly makes the whole situation look much more suspicious.

It means that even before the election she is playing by the republican rules, she must have studied Cheney 101. Why would anyone vote for a candidate that has not been vetted, Obama has been vetted for the last 18 months, they have tried to find skeletons in his cupboard, have invented skeletons & he has not whined once.

  85. Pliny - St. Louis, MO

    Pliny,
Palin is in a no-win situation. If she cooperates with a politically biased investigation it will be used as a weapon against her. If she doesn't cooperate then she looks as if she has misconduct to hide. The secrecy surrounding Obama's time in Chicago with people like Ayres creates the same sort of bad smell. In the end I don't think it will matter for either candidate because people have become so jaded about corrupt politicians.

It means we shouldn't ask her any tough questions that might suggest that she isn't who she advertizes herself as because that would just be the elite liberal media being sexist and promoting the liberal agenda which apparently includes wanting to loose in Iraq, passing out abortions to all who apply, and having the gaul to suggest that McCain being a former POW doesn't qualify him for the highest office in the land. Seriously Jack just give it up. At this point you could point out that Palin was Caucasian and you'd be called a rascist.

It means guilty. Something to hide. More revelations of misdeeds to come. She is not squeaky clean. She is just another politican with a great deal of baggage accumulated in a short history in politics. It means you can fool some of the people all of the time. I rest my case.

    September 16, 2008 at 2:04 pm |
  96. Kevin, Chester Springs PA

If she has nothing to hide, she should answer the questions. So not cooperating says to me she played a large part in troopergate. And it's quite simply a stall so that nothing comes out before the election. Just part of the McCain campaign strategy to sequester Palin as much as possible from the press and anyone else who will ask her the tough questions. Quite frankly, it's an embarrassment that Palin was even chosen and nominated as the Republican VP. And how anyone can argue she is qualified is beyond me. God help us all if McCain gets elected and something happens to him and she becomes president.

I just wish McCain's group had done a little more research before choosing her. What does it mean? It means that she must have something to hide afterall and is using the excuse that Democrats have tainted the investigation. Remember, this all started BEFORE she was nominated. It appears she is just another "do as I say not as I do" Republican. Why doesn't she get Tina to go in her place? She's a much better actress.

I have an idea. If Gov. Palin continues to be uncooperative into this investigation, arrest her and put her in jail. It seems as if she has something to hide. It is tragic that so many people in this country have been blinded to the fact that McCain pulled the wool over many American citizens' eyes. The man is incompetent, clueless, and rapidly approaching senility when it comes to his views on running this country if he is elected. The man is George Bush, the second. This country is trillions of dollars in debt. To cover up the warts in his personna, McCain chooses a virtual unknown in Sarah Palin to be his running mate. Millions of women in this country, apparently clueless to be blunt, have fawned over Sarah Palin. They see this woman who has had five children, the last of whom suffers from Down's Syndrome, and who very much is the "Working Mom". Women power! Hello, people. Grow a brain stem! Are you all blind as to see that McCain would be an utter disaster as our President? Sarah Palin, also, would be equally incompetent to be the second in command, and a heartbeat away from being Commander in Chief. If she were to become President, what is she going to do, appoint all of her former Alaska high school classmates to important cabinet positions, (similar to what she has done as governor)?
The country made a monumental mistake in re-electing Bush to serve 4 more years in office back in '04. The country has plunged into further economic chaos. Are we plain ignorant enough to repeat our mistakes, and elect the McCain-Palin ticket to head this country in the fall? If so, we have no one to blame but OURSELVES for our own stupidity! Wake up, America!

Stonewalling just like the Bush Administration has done in its countless scandals, will someone talk about the similarities between the way she would govern compared to Bush, more of the same is not just a phrase but a fact.

She has also hindered investigations, supports a war without any waver, hires people in her administration from a friends list like Gonzalez and Fema Gate, she supports the same right wing neo conservative values as Bush and McCain, she does not work with democrats instead uses divisive politics and has the same experience that Bush had going into the election.

She won't answer questions from the media, instead she spins and uses newspeack in describing her policies, Bush policies, and Democrat policies.

When she answers questions, you get the feeling that she does not know what she is talking about, instead uses 2 or 3 common lines for all the issues we face as a problem. She thinks solutions that work in Alaska will solve a coming depression in the whole nation, and solve international global conflicts.

I think I speak for many residents in the Ohio Valley region when we say that we really don't care about what's happening to the Pres. or VP candidates for the last couple of days as most of us (yes, we in Ohio also) have been recovering from the remnants of Hurricane Ike. It looks like all of the news networks have totally forgotten the people of the Midwest and have not even empathized with many as we have been stuck with a lot of devastation in this once in a 100 year event. This goes to prove my theoy as well as Obama and Biden stating that she will continue the Bush agenda. I have thought that from the moment she was appointed and when McCain was nominated.
Peole I hope have enough brains to oust McCain-Palen ticket. All we will have is the same "My way or the Highway".

  148. Raymond Duke/Gatesville,Tx.

What it means jack is that the Obama camp and the democrat leadership is trying to fix the election. It means the same thing as Obama did to eliminate his black adversaries in the state of Illinios in which he used lawyers to get them off of the ticket. It will not work here with the republicans and the majority of the american people. Hey Jack when are you going to take your baised tail and ask the question what happen to the million dollars of fraud scam that Obama and His terriost friend Ayers run on the people in Chicago. But you would not do that because you and CNN are in the tank for Obama.. In november McCain / Palin will win big in the electoral vote.

We cannot let this Woman get away with acting like she is above the law! That's all the Bush admin did, they should've been impeached along time ago! She is nothing but a "Ultra" corrupt HYPOCRITE! Peolple in her own state government are affraid of stating the truth because of her evil vindictivness! We need to fix this country and the McCain/Palin ticket is NOT the way!!

  155. Andre (Atlanta)

    Jack

Did anyone for a second believe she would cooperate? NO, this is the same playbook from the Bush administration. Palin is Clueless Joe Jackson with lipstick. If her and McCain get in office I hope everyone got passports to get out of the country, two war mongers on the loose in Washington, ouch!

    September 16, 2008 at 2:16 pm |
  156. Marie Ontario

Well Jack ordinarily I don't read the garbage rags like the National Enquirer but their record of accountability on their stories about high profile people is very good as they make sure of the facts to avoid being found guilty of liable.

The Enquirer has stories on the Palin family that shows them to more disfunctional than how Ozzie Osbourne's family is portrayed and this will all come out in the open as they are just dragging out the whole truth to bolster their paper sales.

As of now I think they have Sara by the short hair and will reveal a lot more troubling stuff about her than just her abuse of power but for now the Republican motto of "WE ARE ABOVE THE LAW" will have to suffice for troopergate.

    September 16, 2008 at 2:16 pm |
  157. Michael "C" Lorton, Virginia

Jack: Sarah once describe herself as a hockey mom to a pitbull....and the difference was lipstick. Now she refuses to cooperate with the troopergate investigation , which means, she is a pitbull with no legs; It doesn't matter how many times you call her, she ain't gonna come.

Why would Sarah Palin cooperate with the legislative invesigation when

When she says it is "tainted" with Democrats, it means that she can't charm them, or say that since Bush, Rove, Cheney, Ashcroft, etc. didn't even obey a Congressional supoena, why should she cooperate. If it were a Democrat saying that, the Republicans would be all over it, insinuating all kinds of dire things. When one of their own does it, it is refusing to cooperated with a tainted investigation. In any case, considering that the anti-Palin rally in Alaska was bigger than the pro-Palin when she went home to see her son off (a bigger PR stunt I've NEVER seen - and one guaranteed to paint targets on every person in the battalion!), I think there must be something rotten in Alaska!

This is so frustrating to watch! what happened to our media, Jack, what happened? when did they stop standing up for the common interest of our nation? This was a bipartisan effort, started before she was picked for the VP candidate, she spouted "transparency" in government, then her husband had to be subpoenaed, its looking like she is going to end up being subpoenaed too, and if she doesn't show, get a US Marshall to go get her and drag her azz back to the hearing. She is not above the law and maybe she has to learn that fact. If she has nothing to hide, why not talk to the investigators, who BTW, are a majority of Republicans.

Simple Jack. That she is guilty or has something to hide. You remember a Vice President who would not attend a subpoena by the Senate Committee on Wire Tapping? Dick Cheney. This just means that if McCain wins, she will just be the same: McSame, DickSame, BushSame or SarahSame.

  175. Gary of El Centro, Ca

It means she has learned the lessons of the Bush administration: use and abuse your power, clam up when you are called on it, and simply ignore any attempt by the legal community to learn the truth and/or hold you accountable. She is the last person we need in the White House (in any capacity) following the current administration.

    2. In our system, you do not have to cooperate; you just cannot lie and are unlikely to be able to conceal. So it means nothing!

    3. I am more concerned that she vetoed a bill to help keep troubled teens off the streets in Anchorage and opposed an earmark for special emphasis on sex crime prosecution, both supported by Monegan, a career top cop. Earmarks are not a dirty word. It is probably local gov't malpractice not to ask Washington for the money back for special projects that the locals cannot afford after large tax takings by the feds. Just be careful for what you ask for and ask intelligently. I am not misled or distracted. I am voting for Obama.

Sarah Palin I mean Dick Cheney the II – is a fast learner. She obviously has something to hide. If she was a stand up person she should want to get this over with. Instead of concentrating on Troop Gate she should have prepared for her interview with Charlie Gibson. During the interview she showed that she is a liar and doesn't have any foreign policy experience. But remember she can see Russia from where she lives.

It simply means that she like many others (from both sides of the aisle), thinks that she is above the law therefore is imune from the law. If this election is about character, I think that the republicans are losing it because people just have enough of the lies.

Another person defying the law.Another person who thinks she is above the law. We have had almost 8 years of that attitude in Washington DC, Its time to remove this feeling from our government. Its time to clean out the house and start on the senate. I am tired of all the politicians in DC thinking about their own pockets and forgetting the people who put them there. The public comes before J.Q. Politician.

It is really quite simple: why not get rid of the stain on her bid for the vice-presidency and fully cooperate to put the matter to rest by October 10th and get on with the business of campaigning. Palin would be vindicated, salvaging her credibility and giving her a major boost in the polls. Unless, of course, Sarah Palin has something to hide......

  185. Dan Pa

    Jack,
It means she is misusing her executive power just like Chaney and this administration. They want to try and scam the American people and start running on change when this is the exact same tactics the American people are feed up with. This is just proves to the American people the republican ticket is a scam and will just be four more years of the same.

    September 16, 2008 at 2:23 pm |
  186. Dan, Maryland

Let's see, what does this remind me of? Oh yeah! Karl Rove who refuses to fully cooperate (under oath) to Congress. Oh and then there's almost the entire staff of the Jusice Department and Alberto Gonzales who still isn't fully cooperating. Oh wait, one more, how could I forget? Bush himself still hasn't answered to the American people about weapons of mass distruction. Just another Republican who refuses to cooperate with ethics violations...I have a new acronym for Sarah Palin. RCMA – Reform Candidate My Ass.

It means she was never vetted and she evidently has something to hide. The more I learn about her the more I question the judgement of Sen McCain.
P.S. I don't know any hockey moms anything like her,and remember pit bulls are kwnown to attack without any provocation

Jack, It means that McCain is hoping that Palin and her associates refusal to participate in a bipartisan-majority republican-investigation will be delayed until after they are in office when they can pardon Bush, Cheney, Rove and Palin. It is interesting that the 'reformers' want everyone to believe they are for transparency for everyone in government excepting themselves. It sounds like Bush/Cheney/Rove, except this time, it is McCain/Palin/Schmidtt.

Another classic example of hubris – Palin obviously thinks she is above the law. Crying wolf about the Dems causing her problems is about as true as her giving back the money that came with the "Bridge to Nowhere".

Sarah Palin's going to REFORM Washington but she won't even start in her own backyard. She won the election for governor on a platform of transparent government but her entire staff were using personal emails to keep their actions secret.

I'm praying that the press will protect the American people by exposing this hypocrite for what she is.

Transparent and accountable leadership in government are not relative to the Republicans. Oh I forgot, that is part of their (McCain/Palin) platform.

leaves me scratching my head as to what more is to be learned about Palin. Is she afraid that all the political bodies left along the road will rise up to haunt her? Will McCain's trophy be stuffed prior to ballot time?

If it shrills like a duck and shoots at ducks, hey, it's a duck already. She likes power and using it. So what if she was warned by a judge to back off. Hey, I am a pit bull with lipstick, hear me roar. What can they do to me that I won't call sexist! And off she goes.

All I can say is if a Democrat had put her chance at being the VP first and in the process put her 17 year old daughter through the ringer you can bet the GOP would not have called it family values. What hypocrites.

Palin does not equal reform so much as another reason for reform. Obama is change that we need.

Me thinks tha she is not a transparent as she thinks she is. At first I gave her troopergate. The interview with the guy pointed out several reasons why this idiot did not need a badge. Tasering your stepson just because he wanted to try it out? PLEASE. Now since she is refusing to cooperate with the investigation it is making me wonder all the more. Also why is she hiding from hte press. I mean she is acting like she is Britney Spears or something. Shouldn’t she be talking to yall so the country can get to know her?

It's puzzling. She must truly have something to hide. Otherwise, she would cooperate to the fullest, then when the report comes out, she could once again claim to be the "victim" of a tainted political witch hunt. Whoops! Probably shouldn't have written this, cause the Repubs will implement this strategy. Poor Princess Palin. She is hiding from the truth. She is not this perfect woman the McCain camp puts out. She is not clinton. McCain made two major mistakes; 1. He ran for office. 2. He picked Palin. It means Ms. Palin appears well-groomed for Bush / McCain service. Stonewalling, obfuscating, flip-flopping, outright lying, and abusing power seem to be valued skills for the current administration or McCain's campaign. This is SO NOT the republican party of our parents or, for that matter, the people of honor (Hagel, Lugar, Snowe, Collins, etc.) that are stranded on the otherwise reprehensible side of the aisle.

Jack– Why should Gov. Palin cooperate with an investigation. She learned by the example set by our President and Vice President that all one has to say is, “no, you can’t make me,” and the Congress, the media, and the American people, rather than hold her feet to the fire, will waste endless hours yakking about how much she has energized the Republican Party. Shouldn’t the question be how much of this type of thumbing their noses at the laws of the land is at the root of America’s current problems. Wars and rumors of wars; scores of home foreclosures; implosion of our financial institutions; increasing difficulty in feeding and educating our children. Where is Henny Penny when you need her ‘cause somebody needs to the us Americans that our sky is falling.

Sarah Palin is hiding the fact that she put Alaska women and kids at risk in pursuit of her personal vendetta. Alaska leads the nation in reported forcible rapes per capita. When she fired Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan, Palin put her obsession with settling personal scores ahead of protecting public safety. Like McCain who chose an unqualified running mate for political reasons, Palin puts her own ambition ahead of the need of the people. Hardly what you'd call putting "country first."

Palin learned everything from the best about stonewalling, lying and smearing...Karl Rove! After 8 years of our no-respect leadership and the lawbreaking subordinates like Gonzales and Miers, why should Palin feel it is necessary to answer the questions charged against her. She will be a great follow-up to George Bush's imperial presidency when she takes over when McCain proves unable and unwilling to govern. But the American people are so stupid that more will vote for the American Idol than the right American President.

It means she's guilty as sin. Innocent people are ready, willing and able to cooperate. Guilty ones don't. Haven't we seen enough of this already with the Bush administration and Plamegate? If people want 4 more years like the last 8, then McCain/Palin is their IDEAL pair. For me?? Not so much!

Jack, It means the same thing as when Clinton or Nixon or Agnew or any of the others from Washington forward got caught doing some immoral, unethical or illegal. One party will want to make hay of it and the other will want to sweep it under the rug. mostly these people forget the old saying about "Honesty being the best policy." It proves they are all to human with all our failings and dumb enough to think they can lie and stonewall around the problem. Just another reason to vote Buggs Bunny.

It means that since hitting the national campaign trial Palin is not on the ground in Alaska harrassing and threatening her opponents into not seeking the truth. If is common knowledge in that state that if you cross her she will make your life a living hell. She is not there to control the circumstance. Her excuse that the investigation has been tainted by the Obama campaign is just plain stupid.

Palin's flip-flop on cooperating with the "troopergate" investigators means that:

    1) she is a calculating liar willing to switch positions in order to gain political advantage,

    2) she will do whatever it takes to get elected, ethics be damned.

It means check mate. Gov. Palin allowed herself to be used as a distraction in this election. She is really front and center. She claims her ethics caused her to blow the whistle on corruption within her party. Now her party is blowing the whistle on her. What a crooked web she has made because of her practice of deception. She may as well fall into the sticky mess she has created, own up to her mistakes and get on with her life.

The American people will not put her in the White House but they will forgive her.

Jack I'm from the old school,"do nothing, fear nothing". Sarah Palin has talked yhe talk and now she must walk the walk. This investigation must go through to clear her name.Since being named as VP candidate Sarah Palin has been slinging some white lies left, right and center and her word have been leaving dark trails which doesn't speak well for her creditability. How will she change Washington? Why is John McCain covering up for her?We have all heard this movie before and it's coming soon to your neighbourhood. The title is "DO WHAT I SAY BUT DON'T DO WHAT I DO.

That she is true blue (or should say red?) died in the wool Republican with all the 'moral values' of the Bush Adminstration. No wonder she fits in so nicely to the Rove/Bush/McCain crowd..

P.S. she also has instructed her staff to block any co-operation. So if she gets in office (scary thought) we may have another few years of legal issues at the expense of the nation. Do you think someone might mention this to other reporters Jack?

To me it means that she is towing the line set by the McCain campaign. Before August 29th she was all for cooperation . . . now she is stonewalling at every turn.
It just shows that the McCain camp did not vet her at all. They just wanted a woman on the ticket.

It's always someone else's fault when these types find themselves in a pickle. They need to go after her like the fomer Mayor of Detroit. See what she will say under oath, and I would love to see what those text messages say. Hey, politics is dirty. Palin might have a valid reason not to cooperate as her enemies and some Obama supporters will do whatever they have to in order to bring her down regardless of the truth. If there really was something of substance to hide, I doubt McCain would have picked her. As a Republican reformer, she has some enemies on the Democratic side as well as some enemies within the Alaskan Republican establishment. I'm not saying that if the party affiliations were reversed in this situation things would be any different, however politics can be dirty. Therefore she may have good cause to be cautious.

It means Palin is being coached by the likes of Karl Rove & Co. who have lowered the bar on ethics these past eight years and made criminal activity in our government a common occurence! Ms. Palin, although beauty contest material, is not able to come up with an original remark or answer one question directly with a meaty, intelligent response. She is all fluff and no substance and to my mind is an insult to women who have really "paid their dues" in the political arena. Being mayor of the tiny town and then governor of the remote state may be ok for Alaska (or not!) but is no qualification for Washington. She is in WAY over her head–and I hope this comes out BEFORE the election. If she won't cooperate–it means she really is STATUS QUO and represents NO change at all!

It means Palin thinks that she is above the law. And it also means that the McCain bunch are desperate to hide the truth by delaying this investigation as long as possible. Hummm. . . . .. maybe until after the election. The truth is, if Palin would have gone through the proper channels and filed a police report the way a responsible person would have, she would not be in the mess she is in now. This is what happens when people think that they are above the law. This is what happens when people abuse their power in ANY way.

It means nothing. Just like Obama's 20-year affiliation with his racist minister meant nothing. Just like Michelle Obama saying that this is the first time she's ever been proud of her country meant nothing. Just like Obama performing as the agent of change, changing his story, his tune, and his colors from one day to the next like a chamelion means nothing. Just like all the tug-o-war rhetoric means nothing. Fortunately, in this election as in all elections there is something that actually means everything: The thought on the voter's weary on Nov. 4th when they're punching in or bubbling in their selection for the next President of the United States of America–that is theand only thing that means anything at all.

what it means is she thinks she is above the law. If she has that attitude ( like cheaney ) what will she do if elected VP. This is the same attitude, the nixox administration people had and the same as the current occupiers of the WH.

What gives these politicians this attitude? Well one thing is they think they are the same as sports personalities who will do anything and think they are above the law. That attitude is derived from people hissing their backsides their entire adult lives and in most cases since they were born.
The attitude they are better, smarter, richer, more connected than the average person and entitled to special treatment. Thae entitelment of life, the entitlement of staion, the entitlement of whos their daddy.

Palin failing to cooperate with the investigation and along with the McCain campaign not letting her do any more interviews or press conferences on her own says there are some question marks about her and her situation. Where did the "straight talk express" go on the McCain/Palin campaign? McCain/Palin say they are agents of "change"??? Does this remind anyone of the Bush administration telling Harriet Meyers, Alberto Gonzales, Karl Rove, etc. etc. Not to cooperate with Congressional investigations and hearings! It's the same corrupt, abuse of power that we've witnessed for the last 8 years!! She's just another politician thinking she doesn't have to answer to the American people. And she wants our vote for VP. Come On! This is getting ridiculous! I thought MCain/Palin wanted to Change Washington. They are already proving that they'll follow in the same footsteps as the current administration. One other glaring possibility: McCain/Palin wants to keep the spotlight away from the economy and to project an image of an unfairly embattled and accused VP nominee.

He has been in denial about everything that has gone wrong with the America economy. George W. Bush is nothing but and ignorant bully that likes to tell lies and push people around. Jack,
This is the first time I have paid real attention to politics where I watch CNN and MSNBC daily and I'm distrubed at what I see people falling for. To me, Sarah Palin is finally showing her true self. Untruthful and unqualified to be the Vice President of the United States. I would feel very unsafe should something happen to John McCain and Sarah Palin had to step in to be the President of the United States. I hope its not too late for people to see what John McCain and Saral Palin is all about. She has nothing close to Hillary Clinton is, and it should not be assumed that because she is a woman, women will automatically vote for her. By the way, where does these polls numbers come from? No one has polled me!!!

According to the Alaska nespaper, that I have been checking daily for a local perpsective, the bi partisan legislative commission that is investigating troopergate, has a couple of Democrat senators on it, so it would not be fair. Oh poor Sarah! Sarah things it would be much more fair to have it decided by the state personnel board, which of course was appointed by, Sarah Palin. Where is the bi-partisan fairness in that idea?? This is the woman that is going to help get corruption ourtof Washington? I think the lack of transparency proves this would not be the case.

Sarah Palin is the very person she says she will reform... just as soon as she gets herself to Washington. Jack,

    Its entirely consistent.
She was for the bridge to nowhere, before she was against it.

She visited Iraq before she didn't.

She was for co-operation with investigation before she was against it.

Turn out the lights, the party's over.

Analysts will be speculating over McCain's choice of this no-name, toothless "pitbull" for years to come. And it will only get worse as she emerges more and more from the protective cocoon the Republicans have her tucked neatly within. Honestly, what has changed in the last week that has seen Palin go from "full cooperation" with the investigation to having her surrogates literally sue to prevent it? Anyone?

Innocent people are willing to stand on a stack of bibles and look all straight in eye. Guilty politicians change the subject or just fail to show when summoned to show up at Senate hearings. Dear Jack,
I really feel the Republicans trying to isolate Gov. Palin is a huge isssue. Bringing her in smacks of desperation, but it was a smart move. Two months left, spice up the race, by the time the dust settles we, ( republicans ) win.

    September 16, 2008 at 3:39 pm |
  296. Steve in Overland Park KS

Clearly this is the fault of the Obama campaign. How dare they secretly implement a Republican majority on the 5 member panel responsible for the inquiry? How dare they supplant Tina Fey on the campaign trail promising to cooperate with the investigation? How dare anyone question the "integrity and honor" of the Republican Party? I mean, it's not like they've ever let us down before...

  297. Betty in Mechanicsville

What else would we expect from a Republican? They have seen Bush and his cronies pull the same stunt with no consequences, so why can't they? This is what you get when Congress allowed subpoenas to go ignored under the Bush administration.

    Jack,

It's proof that the McCain-Palin ticket would mean four more years of the same. She isn't even VP yet and, just like Bush-Cheney, she's already claiming EXECUTIVE PRIVILAGE every time things get too hot. In case you don't know the difference between Palin and Cheney, it's LIPSTICK!

    September 16, 2008 at 3:39 pm |
  300. Wayne Phillips

She won't cooperate because she knows the findings of the investigation will reveal that she abused the power she had as governer of AK. There is every reason to believe that if she will abuse the tiny power she had as governer she will abuse power given as VP.

It makes her unappealing and will definitely cost her ticket votes.

Jack–welcome back. You're the best and have one of the few voices that keeps things honest. No bias like Dobbs and Beck. Fire them and give you 2 hours in primetime
Palin should be like any other candidate, competely vetted, open to the public and out on the stump by herself so we can see if she has the knowledge and judgement for the highest office. Mccain wants her with him to attract more crowds because he's so boring. She wants him with her so she does not appear not to have the answers.
Sure wish she would get a new speech with some substance on the issues. People are starting to get tired of the repetitive pithy sayings.

If Sarah Palin has nothing to hide, than there's no reason to run, no matter who is running the investigation. I think the more we learn about Sarah Palin, the more we find out how much baggage comes with this VP pick. I think we just scratched the surface of whats to come.

We are supposed to vote for a VP that is under investigation? I always say I've heard it all but WHAM here we go again. She should not have been considered under these circumstances . There are two Democrats and THREE Republicans on the current ethics panel. Why is the McCain-Palin campaign claiming that it is a Democratic witch hunt when at least one Republican had to vote to pursue the investigation at the outset BEFORE Palin was ever nominated?

    September 16, 2008 at 3:40 pm |
  315. Billy

It means the McCain campaign is just hoping they can run out the clock without answering to America on any relevant issues and pray that the public is too stupid to know it.

I give them a 60% chance of success.

Jack, here is my question to you (though not directed at you):
Why is the American press not pushing these issues? Why aren't they standing up for the public who want Palin to answer real questions on her record and experience?

    September 16, 2008 at 3:40 pm |
  316. Brett

It's not just Palins reluctance to cooperate that bothers me. Its the McCain campains endorsment of her lack of cooperation.

This looks very much like the Bush administrations answer to investigations of wrong doing....... Ignore them.

I am not in the least bit surprised that she won't cooperate with the investigation. Why, because John McCain, and the campaign he is in charge of, have sold his soul to the devil to get elected. I have to surmise that he thinks this is his absolute last chance at the Presidency and therefore he must try to win at all costs....honor, integrity and truth be damned.

    Very very simple Jack,

It means the Democrats have "Hijacked" the investigation to use as a tool for their purpose in this election. Take a look at who is now on the committees and supporting it all.

Sarah Palin is in favor and willing to work with the original investigating team that was to be a non-biased independent group!

Let's be fair about this!!!! ..Everyone should get their facts about this straight before jumping to conclusions!

Nice try, all you will find out is what Americans already know, Gov. Palin is a mother and good person from a small town. She is a true reformer who has even gone against her own party for the American people. Her experience as a VP candidate far surpasses the that of a community organizer. Gov. Palin is a Energy expert, can the Obama/Biden say that?

She could be guilty. Or...it could be a witch hunt from all the people who's toes got stomped on, because she didn't play 'politics as usual' game. If I was her, I wouldn't cooperate with particular panel of 'investigators', either.

    September 16, 2008 at 3:57 pm |
  347. Marty

Why don't you ask her that, Jack? Oh, yea. She doesn't "do" questions from media; or the voters; and certainly not measly little congressional investigators. She is far too high and mighty and it would be sheer victimization to actually expect a straight answer from the poor thing. Besides, We really don"t need to know the true answer until after election day since it only deals with ethics and questionable judgement. (This is all sarcasm, by the way)

I'd say it means she needs to be thrown to the wolves, but there are too many airplanes out today.

Why don't you read the CNN article. It's because the investigation is being headed by an Obama supporter with pre-determined intentions. I'm amazed the number of your constituancy that can't read. But you like stupid people so you can put anything you want over on them.

  352. Elizabeth in Seattle

Like anyone who does not want to cooperate with a situation – they have something to hide or loose. Also to say that the democrats particularly the Obama campaign, are putting there hand in this and "taint" the investigation is absurb. The investigation was going on before the Governor was named as the Republican V.P. candidate. Wake up! She and John McCain know that if she cooperates it will just show how bad the choice McCain made and he will blow the election for sure – not that he was not before- this would just solidfy it. Gov. Palin may have popularity now, but that will change – she will continue to show her spots.

    September 16, 2008 at 3:58 pm |
  353. Chrystal G; Durham, NC

The McCain/Palin ticket will see the numbers change as the truth begins to come out. This information confirms she is stubborn and her inability to do the right thing. Poor judgement on the McCain/Palin Campaign to attempt to stop the investigation until after the election.

This troopergate shows the American people how she will handle the business and serious issues of our country ...on her own terms.

    September 16, 2008 at 3:58 pm |
  354. Jerri From Michigan

I would hate to be a Republican today – they had to defend George W because he was from their party, but if they have to start defending Sarah Palin just 2 weeks into the campaign what does that say for John's McCain judgement. What is she and the Republican party hiding? If she is innocent – let her speak. She still has a Republican "Gag" in place so we the mere people may never know.

McCain and Palin, a third Bush term! Break the law, get investigated, lie,and hide, claiming the Liberals are out to get you. This is the hallmark of the Bush administration, and apparently will be the hallmark of the McCain/Palin administration. Eight more years of lies (which has already begun) Su-per! When will the American electorate wake up to what this woman really is? She's blindly ambitious and does not let a little thing like Truth get in her way. She's frightening.

Are all Republicans above the law????

It means that honest, law biding, moral politicians don't exist within the GOP. Just look at the newspapers splattered with Bush, Cheney Abramoff etc. When the GOP controlled congress went after Clinton, he didn't tell the American public to move it to an agency of my picking. In fact Newt Gingrich was having an affair while presiding over the impeachment. Alaska state congress has a legal right to investigate wrong doing and it's going to happen weather Palin and the GOP likes it or not.

It means that the current Administration has taught our country a valuable lesson - run from accountability and eventually it will end up as old news. Look at Karl Rove – we are heralding his opinion these days?

It means that if the voters and media chose not to heed the serious warnings of major inpropriety, deception, and avoidance of accountability that has been found in the Palin/McCain campaign, we are in for another term of abuse of power, deception, and avoiding the truth. It sure may be "maverick", but how is that reform!? Sounds just like Bush and his cronies to me.

How can a political campaign hijack a Judicial investigation.
To use a reason like that as an excuse is itself the biggest disqualification for the upper ecehlons of office.

Your right Jack, this investigation has been going on before she was chosen as VP. The fact that she is hiding behind McCain like a daughter under her protective father, and blaming the Obama campaign for "tainting" the investigation is further proof that Mrs Palin is not VP material.
Its only a matter of time before Mrs. Palin has to answer to the law she claims she will uphold.....in the mean time, her husband should reveal some information that will show how much of a team player Mrs. Palin is to the corrupt and twisted politicians, whom she has shown will put before ordinary American

Do we really care about the truth? The entire issue will fade into the past as election day 2008 draws near and the financial crisis worsens.

Put the republicans in office and let them clean up their own mess!

It is obvious to most, Jack, that the process may not have been hijacked by Obama's surrogates, but it has certainly been tainted by them. A recording of the lead Democrat in the investigation promising that it wud be embarrassing for Palin ? Before the report has even been agreed upon ?? Then the Democrats set the release date of the report for 5 days before the election ? Talk about gamesmanship !!!

Of course, revealing both sides of the issue is beyond your powers of comprehension. For once, I wud like you tell me what "hard" question you have had of Obama ? ...... I didn't think you cud.

It means more lipsticks will ease the investigaton and that she tried to avoid the facts. By the way it's all about seeing Russia from her home, isn't it?? More lies ahead to expect from the Republicans. Sick and Tired.

    Jack,

The fact that Palin won't work with investigators should tell America that she is hiding something but, that would require them to actually think.

Jack, I am so glad you are back!

It means that obviously Palin has something to hide. And that she is also taking a bite out of the Bush pie...doing what she wants to do no matter how it affects people, then refusing to own up to the deed and face the consequences. She really gives me nightmares.

hi Jack very sorry about your wife's death. May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace.

Jack my question his that, does she have the right to denial been investigated or question.

I get so disturb about some of the news i hear from America media, isn't it shame to American media that somebody that is going to hold one of the world greatest office has not been interviewed or hold a comference meeting with the press or to even answered questions during camp. shame.

Jack, It means that she is another bush-cheney; and even worse, she is a combination of both, already trying to make her own laws before she gets elected to VP. She has a history of firing anyone who doesn't agree with her. She is a very dangerous woman and is not fit to be VP or President.

It means more of the same Jack. The same "I am above the law" attitude we already have in the White House. It means four more years of an assault on American ideals and corrupt government. It means nothing will be reformed in Washington except Sarah Palin herself – reformed into a "Washington Insider". Ain't the future looking bright?!

If you're willingly put yourself in a spotlight as bright as running for the VP you must also cooperate with the PEOPLE you're wanting to govern... the people that have every right to ask questions and want to learn more about this unknown that is Sarah Palin. It's insulting to me as a woman.. the way McCain chose this woman... we know nothing about her and they won't PUT FORTH ANY INFO ABOUT HER! I think her silence = guilt.

Choosing her was a cheap political ploy by John McCain and quite frankly I'm disgusted.

  413. Fred Poarch

    Dear Jack,

Here we go again with typical Republican response to finding out truth. First George W. Bush would not lest his Administration memebers testify unless it was NOT under oath. Sarah Palin now takes it a step farther. She was going to cooperate before there was actually an investigation. Now that there is an investigation she is taking the 5th Amendment and will not even testify. Something stinks more than an old fish in a newspaper; it is Sarah Palin's lack of integrity and honesty.

Jack what are Republicans teaching our children. Where else but at the RNC could a young man get to shake the Presidential Candidates hand just for knocking a girl up. I can imagine Palin saying, son there will be a moose hunt with you, Dick Cheney and I or a wedding.

    Jack,

Her feet should be held to the fire. She should be forced to testify before the election or be dropped from the ticket. It saddens me that McCain chose her. Its like he dont care who he leaves this country to as long as he gets in office. MCCain the Patriot or OPPORTUNIST?

  420. Trista

Looks like she's been found guilty in the court of public opinion, if reading your comments and listening to your slant are any indication.

If there's something to convict her of, why not have a completely independent panel to look into it. If there's something there it will come out without the taint of a "witchhunt" coloring it.

well jack, she has something to hide even more than the troopergate..if people feel that she's more qualified than obama, well they must be stuipd..she's meeting with the owner of timken co,(located in stark county ohio) doing a funderaiser for her guy and she can't figure out what is the bush doctrine?..yet she may think that she may attract women but i hope that all americans need to have a serious discussion about palin's credilbilty for running the second highest office in the land..really, why is palin hiding from the media so much?..

    September 16, 2008 at 4:12 pm |
  422. Pat Biswanger

Presumably, Sarah Palin's sister was receiving child support from this trooper, so it makes no sense for Governor Palin to want him fired. It would only hurt her sister. I think the whole thing sounds like a lot of nonsense.

Reminds me of a plumbing problem. I had one bad piece but I replaced all the parts except the bad one. The system won't function and I can't figure out why.
Can OJ pick his own defense team to replace his judge and jury, or is it that stupid "jury of peers" thing?
For a party running on stopping wastefull spending, does it make sense to replace an existing commitee with another?
We know she was properly vetted, I think she it just trying to grab more headlines.

Congratulations, Sarah! You're proving that you're the perfect Republican candidate. Don't like an investigation? Ignore it. If you get investigated, just tell them "I do not recall".

I can't wait for her to be President, so we can get Supreme Court judges approved without hearings because, hey, they're going to be biased cause there's at least one Democrat there.

Sarah Palin, Republican poster child. Who needs the truth when you can just blow it all off and blame someone else?

I don't understand in what world you get to choose who investigates you? I guess that is a privilege of being a governor? If she were a Democrat the GOP would say – she should cooperate if she has nothing to hide...its not as if the investigators can make stuff up. This whole thing stinks. The McCain campaign must know she'll get caught if she or her staff has to speak under oath...

I don't view her unwillingness to cooperate as an admission of guilt, that remains to be seen, but she absolutely loses credibility for refusing to be reasonable. Furthermore, the notion that the Obama camp is trying to hijack the issue is farfetched, at best, seeing as the investigation has gone on for months.

    September 16, 2008 at 4:13 pm |
  453. Jennifer

Jack, it means the same as the rest of McCain/Palin's sham of a partnership. He does not represent change, she does not represent reform . . . and don't dare think you're going to ask them any questions about it.

    September 16, 2008 at 4:13 pm |
  454. Brandon - Pine Bluff, Arkansas

It means she's got something to hide. If she is supposed to be this big time reformer then she should also be an advocate for transparency in government. So if Palin can't come clean with her own state legislature on an investigation into her management of state employees. This clearly shows that a McCain-Palin administration will be as secretive and misleading as the Bush-Cheney administration of the past eight years.
