FROM CNN’s Jack Cafferty:

Barack Obama is pitching a shutout so far on his trip overseas.

What might be the most complicated part of his journey – into the war zone in Iraq and Afghanistan – seems to have gone off without a hitch. In fact, Obama couldn’t have hoped for better timing – with Nuri al-Maliki’s government choosing the day he was in Iraq to say that U.S. troops should be out of his country by 2010. That’s a date that matches up perfectly with Obama’s plan to remove troops within 16 months of when he would take office. And it gives Obama much more credibility on foreign policy, an area where critics say he lacks experience.

Obama is visiting Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian territories before he goes on to Europe. Meanwhile, his campaign is trying to play down the role of politics in his travels, painting it as a listening tour. But The Politico points out that’s kind of tricky to do when you consider the stagecraft and planning that’s going into some of these events. Take for example Obama’s speech scheduled Thursday in Berlin, which could draw tens of thousands of people. The campaign, which insists the speech is “not for campaign purposes,” might get film crews to shoot it – perhaps for a TV commercial. He’s on the cover of Der Spiegel magazine under the headline: Germany meets the superstar.

As for John McCain, Obama’s overseas adventures may have turned into a case of “be careful what you wish for.” McCain badgered Obama for weeks to go, particularly to Iraq, and now Obama is sucking up all of the media attention and and generally getting rave reviews.

Here’s my question to you: How will Barack Obama’s overseas trip affect his chances of winning the election?

Interested to know which ones made it on air?

Nancy from Tennessee writes:
I think John McCain’s criticism of Barack Obama for not visiting Iraq has backfired. John McCain is probably wishing he didn’t tell Barack to see the world in seven days. Voters now see how Barack can handle himself with leaders of all countries. It will definitely give him a leg up when the polls open in November.

Stephen writes:
Not at all. He was going to win before the trip. And he is going to win after the trip.

Susie from Washington writes:
The commotion overseas is indicative of what is going on at home: Obama is a fad, hyped up by the media. He has yet to prove any real substance, just rah-rah talk of “change” and “hope”. I am leaning toward voting for him, only to see if he can actually deliver on any of these ephemeral promises. But my guess is: just like the totally ineffective Democratic Congress led by Pelosi and Reid, he will not amount to much.

Raoul from New Orleans writes:
The media attention he has gotten so far is proof. While he has been abroad, Senator McCain has told us Senator Obama is to blame for our high gas prices, Iraq shares a border with Pakistan, and he is going to pick a V.P. soon. Does anyone care? No. If Senator Obama were to say one thing as shocking as this, he would be in more hot water than a crawfish boil.

Tony from San Diego writes:
He will have accomplished more this week than Bush did in two terms. Done.

Mike from Albuquerque, New Mexico writes:
The trip will give him enough free media coverage to blast him into orbit. That should put him over the top.

Jay from Sherman, New York writes:
Obama looks and acts presidential overseas, while all we hear recently from the McCain camp are sound bites of McCain whining about Obama. Doesn’t that tell you something, Jack?

The trip will give him enough free media coverage to blast him into orbit. That should put him over the top.

Don P. Calgary   July 22nd, 2008 1:46 pm ET

NO; his ineptness will get the better of him!

Fred, Las Vegas, NV   July 22nd, 2008 1:47 pm ET

It is going to help him because that has generated a lot of media attention both here and abroad. Many people are listening in and all he needs is a B+ performance and he would be fine.

Tony, San Diego, CA   July 22nd, 2008 1:48 pm ET

He will have accomplished more this week than Bush did in two terms. Done.

Jackie in Dallas, TX   July 22nd, 2008 1:48 pm ET

I think it will increase his credibility, especially as he has treated other national leaders with enormous respect, which has been reflected back. He has also, I believe, restored a sense of equality with our allies. I think he has proved that one doesn’t have to have 40 years of experience to know how to be a diplomat, and that a leader doesn’t have to have military experience to understand strategy.

Stacy   July 22nd, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Of course this trip will help Obama because it has highlighted how McCain has revamped his position on Iraq and Afghanistan to be more like Obama’s - why do you think the Iraqi PM initially came out in support of Obama’s plan for respecting Iraq’s sovereignty? Obama as President may allow the United States to engage in diplomacy with both our allies and some of our detractors in the region which may ultimately help curb terrorism, garner support from moderate Muslims in the Middle East and put the region on the track towards peace. Attacking more largely Muslim countries like Iran, certainly won’t achieve any of that.

Mariel   July 22nd, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Obama’s trip abroad has shown that his diplomacy, communication, political, military, nonpartisan, and strategic skills far exceed those of John McCain. It’s like a bright examination light has been turned on, and the contrast between the two candidates is blaringly clear.

Jack Carlson   July 22nd, 2008 1:50 pm ET

It will help him w/his supporters.
Those of us who have been around know the Celebrity position he’s taken won’t work.
In 2006 he said “we could not have a timetable” for Iraq, now he’s for a timetable when others surge has worked.
We need a “leader” of which we have not had for many years.
Jack Carlson
Minneapolis, Mn

Jan Davis, Knoxville, TN   July 22nd, 2008 1:53 pm ET

It most certainly will. He looks very presidential from what I’ve seen and Jack did you notice the wonderful reception the troops gave him. I believe this trip should lay to rest the questions about his inexperience in foreign affairs. He is a highly intelligent, thoughtful person who won’t gamble with the lives of our military the way Bush/Cheney/McCain have done. Can’t wait until January!

Jim   July 22nd, 2008 1:53 pm ET

Obama’s trip just provides additional evidence of his superior judgment in matters of foreign policy. Thank God he had the courage to acknowledge that General Petraeus is merely a field commander who is focused solely on Iraq and, while Petraeus has done an outstanding job in terms of military tactics, he is NOT the commander-in-chief as Bush and McCain apparently believe. In November, voters will remember Obama’s presence and poise on the world stage and also that McCain made many trips to Iraq and never got it right.
Jim

Mark - Asheville, NC   July 22nd, 2008 1:53 pm ET

It depends upon how McCain responds and if the response works. Obama’s seeming agreement with Malaki is only possible because of the surge working. He said today that he still opposes the surge despite what he knows now. That will not fly with voters who are not enamored of him, and there are millions of us.

He will draw huge crowds in Europe but huge adoring crowds do not mean anything come November; ask President Mondale…

Terry, Chandler AZ   July 22nd, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Thr trip will demonstrate that Sen. Obama has traits that some do not think he has. He is demonstarting that he is welcomed and respected by the leaders and citizens of other countries. He looks and acts presidential thanks to the massive media coverage. Net result….victory in November.

Willow, Sheldon Iowa   July 22nd, 2008 1:54 pm ET

I think it will help him immensely. Other nations are finding out that he is a respectful, trustworthy Senator (soon President). He listens, he understands others, has good empathy. And it will be of help in the long run.

McCain, on the other hand, has all of a sudden become enormously negative. He’s grasping at straws and is getting more and more negative all the time.

gary lee, san luis obispo, ca.   July 22nd, 2008 1:55 pm ET

it will help, no doubt about that. i’m sure it will increase his chances. the trip is PURELY political though, and a very smart move on his part.
i’ve been saying all along that obama is a SMART politician. he is NOT going to listen to the advise of his generals however. because that will not get him the votes he needs back home.

but thats just my opinion, i could be wrong.

Sue -Idaho   July 22nd, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Jack, of course, he just put a big pin in McCains balloon, and apparently the rest of the world are just as happy as we are for a BIG CHANGE!

Andrew   July 22nd, 2008 1:58 pm ET

His overseas trip helps greatly. Anyone who questioned his ability to deal intelligently and professionally with foreign officials can now clearly see his ability as a statesman.

We all know that as the new president he will be tested by both our allies and non-allies. He has proven tat he can pass this test. I am proud of Barack for showing what he is capable of

CRAIG R. MCNEES   July 22nd, 2008 1:59 pm ET

tampa, fl. obama is showing us all how eco-friendly he is jetting off all over in his new plane. i’m surprised it doesn’t have chrome rims. the only ones that would benefit would be the american public if he just stayed over there and didn’t come back.

Gary of El Centro, Ca   July 22nd, 2008 1:59 pm ET

His chances were already good, but after demonstrating that he can sit across from other world leaders and represent our interests in a thoughtful and intelligent way, I’d say he is a lock for the White House.

Jackie   July 22nd, 2008 2:01 pm ET

It will set him apart from most politicians. Although Senators and other politicians go oversees, like McCain, they don’t seem to get the level of respect from the people of the countries that Obama does. Listen Up America, When other countries’ approval ratings are this much higher than our own, maybe its time to listen. Maybe thats why we have two ears and only one mouth.

Jackie, NY

Lynn, Vancouver   July 22nd, 2008 2:01 pm ET

It will help because voters who are undecided will now have a picture of him as a world leader. He showed intelligence, honesty and clarity in his press conference this morning.

It will also help as it give voters used to the historical white president an image of a black man in a presidential role.

Dan, Chantilly VA   July 22nd, 2008 2:01 pm ET

No one in November is going to remember a trip Obama takes in July unless someone goes horribly wrong, then everyone will remember it.

Michael, Lorain, Ohio   July 22nd, 2008 2:02 pm ET

I think the trip will have a neutral effect on Obama; it won’t hurt or help him much.

Marlene C. Wilmington,De   July 22nd, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Jack, The trip will help Obama immensely. I heard him talking earlier on CNN. He spoke with intelligence and awareness on the issues. Now let me see…McSame who obviously can’t think and talk at the same(like Bush) or Obama who has mastery and command of not only the English language but the ability to comprehend the issues and discuss them intelligently…who would you want for president? The answer is clear to me…OBAMA ‘08.

byron in vernonia, oregon   July 22nd, 2008 2:03 pm ET

The way it’s gone so far, it’s going to help him a lot. Every photo, interview, news report, etc. that shows him with other world leaders and being treated almost as if he is the president, will overcome criticisms that he is too inexperienced. McCain’s strategy is to show that only he has the experience and judgement to be president–it’s really the same strategy that Hillary Clinton had, and we know how that worked out. Now that I think about it, McCain is starting to remind me of Hillary more every day. I sense desperation.

Casey | Tecumseh, Mo.   July 22nd, 2008 2:04 pm ET

It is clear that Senator Obama is intelligent, eloquent and shows good judgment… a fact made obvious by recent calls for a “time horizon” by Bush and the agreement of al-Maliki to a general timetable similar to Obama’s.

It is even more successful because of how it is driving McCain to be ever more desperate in repeating a couple of lines over and over and over, as if saying them makes them so (I think it does, in his mind).

Bush & McCain
Dumb & Dumber

I, for one, look forward to a President with clarity, coherent thought processes and a calm demeanor who will wage PEACE first.

Karen-Phoenix   July 22nd, 2008 2:04 pm ET

I’m 64, a former republican and no McCain. McCain represents all that has gone wrong over the last 50 years. I see McCain and I remember all the friends I lost in Vietnam. I see McCain and I see all the friends my grandchildren lost in Iraq. Circle of life!!! Time for out with old, in with the new. God intended it this way!!! McCain retire!! Peace is patriotic and we soooo badly need NEW Experience in Washington, NOT OLD Experience!! Obama has the intellegance to talk to anyone. He is a great figure on the foreign sceine and give us back a little of our pride which is soooo dearly needed.

sarah, indiana   July 22nd, 2008 2:05 pm ET

aside from the media (both american and others) worshipping mr. obama, i see nothing in this trip to convince me that he should be elected. so the europeans love him, big deal, the europeans love any socialist with a good speech. he is too arrogant to admit that he was wrong and the surge has worked. he basically blows off the hard work and sacrifice of our troops by saying the iraqi people are just as responsible for the reduction in violence as our troops are. this is the most arrogant, condescending, obnoxious candidate we have ever had foisted upon us, and this democrat will be voting for mccain.

Charles, Lansing, MI   July 22nd, 2008 2:05 pm ET

It will help. It shows the foolishness of the McCain rhetoric in condemning Obamma for deciding policy before visiting the countries. The people who live there agree with Obamma. And of course the fact that McCain agreed with the Bush invasion policies. Bush didn’nt even know where these countries were located when he invaded.

Evan P.   July 22nd, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Sen. Obama’s trip will certainly help him in November, if and only if, he can come off as being presidential. He must show the American people that he can both look the part and play the part of president. I expect that America will see just that. The rest of the world are excited that a man the understands that yes, we are the worlds superpower. But that doesn’t mean that we can bully people around. We must lead by example and only when necessary, flex our powerful muscle.

Terry from North Carolina   July 22nd, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Jack
It will definately help him, however its time to come home, the problems we are faced with are overwhelming and should be addressed in his campaign speeches.

Terri, Dallas TX   July 22nd, 2008 2:07 pm ET

Whether or not he went on this trip, he will win in November. The trip was a nice touch to his overall package.

Dennis in Albuquerque   July 22nd, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Judging by his performance so far, it will be a huge success. I think Mr McCain is starting to rue his strategy of goading Obama to make the trip. Very presidential.

Chryssa   July 22nd, 2008 2:09 pm ET

I think it will help. He’s building relationships with those he’ll have to work with as president, and Americans are seeing the positive back-and-forth that’s going on. It’ll also probably earn him some more military votes.

Boise, ID

William N. Clarke/ Florence, SC   July 22nd, 2008 2:10 pm ET

I feel his comments on the Iraq issue are important to his election because of the importance the McCain’s camp has placed on Iraq. I feel McCain has clouded the Iraq war issues to the point that an opposing point of view should be presented to the public before the election. Mccain at first critized Obama for not going to Iraq, now that he has gone he will be critized again by his opposition for saying things on the war that they feel are the president’s responsibilities. However he has handled the trip extremely well.

Richard Sternagel   July 22nd, 2008 2:10 pm ET

I think it will increase his foreign policy Credentials. So far Sen. Obama has shown himself to be a thought full, deliberative, listener. The kind of person you would want to be President!

Emma in Houston TX.   July 22nd, 2008 2:10 pm ET

I believe that it will help the people who are undecided to vote for him. He is showing that he is intelligent, caring, can work effectively with other leaders and is getting their respect .This will show that he is the BEST man for President. He is making us proud !!!!!!!

Caryn, Washington DC   July 22nd, 2008 2:10 pm ET

As long as things continue to go smoothly, this trip will help Obama a great deal. McCain was too busy pressuring Barack to go (his stupid counter on his website) that he wasn’t prepared for what would happen if the trip was a complete success. Also, with McCain’s recent gaffes, he’s highlighting his own foreign policy inexperience. Just because McCain’s a POW doens’t mean he knows squat about world affairs.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   July 22nd, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Jack, Obama’s accomplishments on the trip will do nothing to help him or us. However, the free publicity from the shameful media frenzy will help a lot. He’s gotten about $50 million in free air time.

Esther Marie   July 22nd, 2008 2:11 pm ET

let me ask you a question Jack. Will you be happy if Obama is president and Europe likes us again? I will be happy if you are happy Jack

Annie, Atlanta   July 22nd, 2008 2:12 pm ET

His trip won’t matter. His class, understanding of the issues, and intelligence won’t matter. Unfortunately what will matter is he’s black and liberal, and there’s a lot of hatred for both still lurking out there in some amazing places, even daily on your blog, Jack.

J Kay - PCMO   July 22nd, 2008 2:12 pm ET

Seeing Obama visiting and smiling with the troops made me smile. No doubt, it helped the troops see there is a light at the end of “what must be” a very long frustrating tunnel.

Hopefully Barack will send McCain a dozen roses as a thank you for his insistent invitation that he visit both war zones. Also attach a map of the Middle East so John Boy can get up to speed.

Kerry Diehl   July 22nd, 2008 2:13 pm ET

His trip really won’t change any of his attitudes or direction (he’s in too deep with the far left liberals and doesn’t want to loose their support).

The media will continue to favor him and be the ones trying to boost his image from this circus event. (They know which party has the most money to spend for advertising.)

Hopefully, the majority of us will be able to make an unbiased opinion as to what was really gained by him and how it would apply IF he makes it to office.

kenneth sibbett   July 22nd, 2008 2:16 pm ET

let’s see Jack. Obama is traveling the world with the cream of the crop reporters, answering tough questions and being seen with world leaders and looking presidential. McCain is at another town hall meeting.Seems like a tough question Jack.

kenny Chadbourn N.C.

David Arnold, Florida   July 22nd, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Jack, for a candidate like John McCain that has one foot in the grave and the other barely hanging on to reality this will be the final nail in his coffin. I am not going to count him out but from now on we will watch as everything he touches, pushes him further and further into the whole he and the RNC thought they had dug for Obama.

Kim, Dodge City, Kansas   July 22nd, 2008 2:17 pm ET

It’s a deal closer for sure. The Presidency is his to lose, barring any major political mis-steps or damaging revelations. For McCain, this must be a tremendous lesson in frustration, as it appears that Obama can do no wrong.

Ryan   July 22nd, 2008 2:17 pm ET

This trip only shows him how wrong he was on the Iraq issue.

Bill from Alabama   July 22nd, 2008 2:18 pm ET

I think it is going to be viewed as one of the most presumptuous visits ever made by a presumptive nominee. I think it is going to back fire on Obama and the media, for giving executive overtones to his speaking with powers that be. Here is a man who hadn’t even completed his first term as the most Liberal Senator in the Senate, when he threw his hat in the ring for the Presidency. One can only assume the “Urgency of now” that he referred to was he had to run before his past caught up with him, because his platform issues were already, all represented by Clinton. He has only enjoyed the success he has because of the medias’ obsession with him! But I think the American people are really turning sick over the media attempt to “Wag the Dog”. The media is as determined to make Obama President and Obama is to become the next President, but I really feel the American people will have to go back to the simple facts that Obama has not paid his dues…we don’t trust him or his associates…..he has no military or executive experience ,whatsoever. And now, his judgement doesn’t even seem to be as adequate, much less better than his opponent. So what has Obama got to offer America? I can’t think of anything. The main thing that will ultimately come out of this campaign season,is the the level of personal involvement the media levied to “Wag this Puppy”. The media’s credibility has severly suffered during this campaign season. We no longer view the News Stations as a fair commentary about daily occurrances and daily events, but as a propaganda machine that has no problem waging it’s own war.

Steve of Florence SC   July 22nd, 2008 2:19 pm ET

He’s displaying that he is as good a puppet as any other politician that has zero experience in foreign affairs or as that goes domestic affairs. We are being hoodwinked by him and the press that supports him.

Buck, Wilmer PA   July 22nd, 2008 2:19 pm ET

Given the level of McCain’s backseat driving of this trip, I’m not sure the conservative media will allow Obama to win. You guys are so busy trying to give every nutjob a fair shake that you fail to analyze what’s really happening. If making a trip like this is merely “Political” as McCain says, then it was the same when he’s done it over and over again.

Gigi in Alabama   July 22nd, 2008 2:19 pm ET

He seems to be doing quite well. As long as he keeps this up and does not make a few really stupid gaffs as McCain did when he made his last trip to the Middle East, it shouldn’t hurt him at all in November.

Border City Canadian, Windsor, ON   July 22nd, 2008 2:19 pm ET

It certainly hasn’t hurt. From what I’ve read, he’s handled himself very professionally, very Presidential. I also think that all of McCain’s blustering and stumbling has only maginified the image Obama has created. Here’s hoping the rest of the trip goes as successfully. I’m really anxious to see the crowds in Berlin and to hear his address.

PT from Voorhees NJ   July 22nd, 2008 2:19 pm ET

Jack it certainly can’t hurt. After McCain’s world tour in which Joe Lieberman had to keep correcting him on various issues and someone else had to remind him where he was at the time, there is not much Obama could do that would reflect negatively on him in November.

C. Farrell, Houston, Tx   July 22nd, 2008 2:20 pm ET

Obama’s overseas trip will only enhance his chances of winning the election and when he returns I’m sure he will turn his attention on the issues we face here, like the economy. McCain on the other hand may need to go back to Iraq and resurrect his argument.

Martha Davidson Vancouver B.C. Canada   July 22nd, 2008 2:22 pm ET

Pass the “commander in chief” test. Check.

Rod from Allentown PA   July 22nd, 2008 2:22 pm ET

Jack,
Mr. Obama is visiting these countries on our, the taxpayer’s nickle, but he is using it as a photo opportunity. If he were really for so much change, he would have paid for the visit himself out of campaign funds. It is exactly what it looks like. A campaign strategy ploy that he did not have to pay for. Nothing like free advertising is there Jack? To answer the question. Of course it will help him, but we are the ones to pay for his good fortune.

David, Orlando, FL   July 22nd, 2008 2:23 pm ET

It all depends on how scummy the Republicans will be and how despicable they are when they try to slime and swift boat him – oh, and of course how stupid the American voter continues to be when they fall for the neo con artist lies. If the idiots who voted for Bush 2X are still here, Obama doesn’t have a prayer.

Senior, CA   July 22nd, 2008 2:23 pm ET

What will help Obama about the trip is that McCain who sees Obama’s popularity there will respond with heavy-duty bashing of Obama. That will turn many voters against McCain and help Obama win.

Rosalynd Florida   July 22nd, 2008 2:24 pm ET

Obama’s overseas trip is already having a huge impact on the presidential race. This trip has been a resounding success so far and the McCain camp is desperate and scrambling and in Novemeber will hate they made Obama not visiting Iraq an issue. Yep, be careful what you ask for. You just may get more than you expected.

Ousman Bojang   July 22nd, 2008 2:24 pm ET

The only help Obama goets from this trip is publicity. Everything else he had before he left. He just proved himself again that he is an able leader. The Mcacin camp call us “whinners” on the recession and then I guess they are the whineers on the publicity Obama gets. I am not a journalist but I know that when a dog bites a man is not as news worthy as a man biting a dog.

Renee   July 22nd, 2008 2:25 pm ET

Yes it will. America’s standing throughout the world has suffered greatly at the hands of our current President and his administration. Obama is ready to talk diplomacy instead of rushing to judgment and war. The relationships he begins on this trip will serve him well as President.

Scott Black   July 22nd, 2008 2:25 pm ET

I am not an Obama supporter. But the more I hear John McCain make attacks on Obama I am convinced that the trip has been very successful for Obama. Obama seems to always give his adversaries respect and he communicates his reasoning for decisions where as McCain and his supporters make nit pick attacks on words and twist the meanings toward their slant and biased view. Obama looks like a president when he addresses the crowd and McCain appears to lessen his importance the more he attacks Obama - it is not presidential looking character to me. The trip looks like a grand slam home run for Obama to me.

cindy from TX   July 22nd, 2008 2:26 pm ET

It will absolutely help him!
McCain is done.

Larry from Georgetown, Texas   July 22nd, 2008 2:26 pm ET

This trip will help Obama a lot since a lot of the military will vote in November to have someone in office with enough guts to end this madness and bring home the troops. There are a lot of wives and husbands and parents that want their loved ones back in the US.

Blue - PA   July 22nd, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Jack,

Not at all. This visit is just a photo-op. Photos by the way that are distributed by the DOD. No reporters have personally viewed his interaction with others while in Iraq & Afghanistan. A crash course is not what we need in a president.

As far as his visit in Europe, that will be funded by his campaign, I am sure the producers, directors, editors, camera crew, stunt people & all the others needed to make a good movie will do well.

Chris - Hemet, Ca.   July 22nd, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Hi Jack. Sen. Obama’s trip abroad may help some of the undecided voters decide but I don’t think it will effect the “anti-Obama” crowd at all, people seem to either love him or hate him. I am not surprised by his popularity in Europe, having lived in England and Greece for seven years I found Europeans to be a bit more laid back and cerebral than the average American

Diana from NJ   July 22nd, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Jack, I believe it will help. He looks Presidential, comfortable in his own skin, self assured without looking cocky and what is better even without hearing his conversations with leaders, I am comfortable he is not calling countries and people by the wrong names… I would dare to go even further to believe he is not embarrassing us.

Jasmine in Germany   July 22nd, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Yes, it will help positively. It increases worldwide brand name recognition and awareness. The Senator has exceptional diplomatic skills, and it’s wonderful that he’s exhibiting them in other countries. Most of the world’s citizens aren’t happy campers with the U. S. A. these days.

Let’s also not forget that Obama’s been around the world a few times; lived in Asia, saw some of the problems in Africa first hand. President Bush’s first visit out of the country was to Mexico (a bordering country), after he became President.

joan ont.ca   July 22nd, 2008 2:29 pm ET

This trip is a plus, Barck certainly knows how to act and speak. I am so proud of this man not only today but from the first time I heard him speak. He is a treasure.

NANCY , Grand Ledge MI   July 22nd, 2008 2:29 pm ET

He is showing America and the rest of the world that he is nothing like George Bush, which will be seen as a big improvement! He has probably had more intelligent conversations already, than Bush ever had. Intelligence and conversation are a contradiction in terms for Bush! McCain is talking about the non existant Iraq/Pakistan border and Czechoslovakia, proving to the world that he is George Bush all over again!! Without intervention from the Supreme Court, McCain is toast!!

Judie   July 22nd, 2008 2:29 pm ET

It will help give him the credibility that the naysayers have said he does not have. McCain badgered Obama about going overseas to see what was going on, what a wonderful idea. McCain’s plan to make Obama look inexperienced back fired. Obama does not appear to lack experience or to be wrong on foreign policy. If the American voters are paying attention and put principals before party Obama will win in a landside in November, but that is a big IF.

Bob in Boise   July 22nd, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Obama has already displayed that he has a better understanding of the region than McCain and he has solutions that McCain can’t even begin to comprehend. He’s a realist who sees the big picture, who knows what needs to get done, and has shown America that the old policies have made us less secure rather than more secure.

Watching Senator Obama on his trip has made me proud to be an American for the first time in 8 years. He is a brilliant man with a vision that will make the world a better place for all of us. I nearly cried at the reaction of the soldiers to him and if there is one word that describes him in his meetings with world leaders, it’s “presidential.” Yes, the trip will help him and it will help us. The world is seeing another side of America this week.

Peg   July 22nd, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Jack, its wonderful to see a American presidential hopeful go abroad and be welcomed with such enthusiasm. A President Barack Obama will change our standing in the world, and show they that we can still lead and be respected. He will also help heal the wounds that Bush has given to our reputation.

vern - anaheim ca   July 22nd, 2008 2:29 pm ET

jack ,i think it will give the overseas leaders a chance to see what a intelligent man he is and to know he is not out to threaten countries with his warlike talk.he will be willing to sit down with foreign leaders to discuss problems

Mac in Truro Nova Scotia   July 22nd, 2008 2:30 pm ET

Senator Obama’s chance of winning the election are getting better by the day. Some of us want to see the USA regain the respect of the rest of the free world which has sadly been diminished or lost. I am proud to see America represented by someone who is articulate and charismatic and knows what he is talking about. As Obama is being sworn in as President McCain will still be shouting,”the surge is working”.

This trip will confirm to American’s, what Obama has been saying all along is the truth and what they hear from McCain/Bush isn’t.

Obama brings honesty, integrity, openess and a capability of uniting people for a common cause. He listens, works to a concensis, and doesn’t theaten anyone, a bit different from the cowboy tactics the world has seen for the last 8 years.

Hey, if he doesn’t get elected there, Canadian citizens will start a movement to elect him as Canadian Prime Minister, before someone in Europe gets the same idea and gets him before we do.

Barack Obama is a one in a lifetime leader and may become the most signficant leader in the western world for the last 100 years.

Donna Colorado Springs,Co   July 22nd, 2008 2:39 pm ET

I don’t know if his overseas trip will make that much difference in November or not. It has shown up the stark differences between McSame and his future plans to stay in Iraq indefinitely, and Obamas determination to do what is right for the country, which means doing what the Iraqi prime minister wants…..get the hell out of his country as soon as possible. I think the majority of the country wants this idiotic war to come to an end, despite Bush,McCain and their band of merry idiots.

Doris Ky   July 22nd, 2008 2:50 pm ET

It has shown that even though he is suppose to be the person with the least amount of experience he is more knowledgeable. For those of us that remember when America was admired and respected by the world we see that we may be able to return to world prominence.

Eileen from Portland, Maine   July 22nd, 2008 3:09 pm ET

I think the overseas trip is the best thing that Obama could have done.
Because of it, we are getting to see a bit of John McCain’s true nature.
He is coming across as a petty, insecure, and jealous man. I view him as a frighteningly loose cannon who seems unable to tolerate any form of criticism.
I think we Americans, (especially after the past 7 years), deserve the kind leadership that Obama can offer us.

Gerad   July 22nd, 2008 3:10 pm ET

Hello Jack. Thanks for asking this question. I think it will be beneficial to Senator Obama. He’s showing people that he is capable of interaction with foreign dignitaries. Why is driving the GOP into a tizzy.
This is an opportunity for the country to regain some respect around the world. Respect that we have lost due to President Bush’s foreign policies. I don’t necessarily like all of Senator Obama’s positions on a few issues, but I believe he is on a better track to fix this country. I think it’s time for a new beginning in America. Lord knows we need it.

Have a great day Jack.

I think is will help tremendously. When the McCain camp is now saying that he is too strick on the 16 month timeline and McCain may bring the troops home in 12 months, you know Obama is winning.

AndyZ Fairfax, VA   July 22nd, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Nope, not at all. What has he accomplished on his, “Senatorial Fact FindingTrip?”

Les From Lakeland, FL   July 22nd, 2008 3:15 pm ET

This trip did what he hoped it would do and that is prove that he has the ability to fulfill his commmander-in-chief responsibilities. This has to make a difference in November as it blew McCain’s “lack of experience” assertions right out the window. I am a little disappointed he did not go to Czechoslavaki and make a visit to the Iraq/Pakistan border, but you can’t have everything. It will be nice to have a President that can pass a middle-school world geography test!

Carl   July 22nd, 2008 3:15 pm ET

This trip can only help him. This is his second trip overseas but with a different agenda in mind. With this trip, Obama will be able to say that his idea of talking to the “enemy” and using diplomatic approaches is the right means, calling on this trip and popularity abroad as proof.

Great Idea with this blog Jack. This will get you exactly how the country feels. I suppose the tough part will be monitoring some of the crazies. From both sides of the aisle. Well, such is life in the blogosphere.I think you’re doing a great job Jack, keep it up.

Dave from Mission Viejo,California   July 22nd, 2008 3:17 pm ET

His overseas trip will help him in November. He appears competent and confident, and the images of him appropriately interacting with troops, Generals and foreign leaders are reassuring to Americans who have concerns about Obama’s relative inexperience.

JW Georgia   July 22nd, 2008 3:17 pm ET

The way I see things stacked up, Obama has already won the election. We just need to have the Electoral College confirm. McCain represents all that has gone wrong with America in the form of leadership under illusion, and there’s no chance for a Republican win in November. So to answer your question, the Obama trip is of no consequence other than what experience in foreign relations he may glean.

Dee/Warwick   July 22nd, 2008 3:18 pm ET

Be careful what you wish for is right. McCain has been relentless in his challege to have Barack Obama visit the Iraq. So now that Obama has arrived “deal with it.” Let the entire world see just how capable and well received Barack Obama is proving to be.

Also, McCain might want to re-fashion his political game, the kind of campaign he is now harping didn’t help Clinton and it won’t help him either. I suggest McCain should try a more positive approach and speak to some of the issues instead of criticizing every move Barack Obama makes.

I think former President Bush sums it up well “just a little jealous.”

maria   July 22nd, 2008 3:18 pm ET

Leslie   July 22nd, 2008 3:19 pm ET

I think the trip will help him immensely…not because he has to “prove” his international credentials, but because it will show the American people what a genuine leader looks like and acts like.

This is all providing that the media does not go looking for something to hammer him with. Sometimes Obama, because he is so intelligent, lays out an entire strategy, and forgets that the world lives on “sound bites”. His op-ed piece in the NYT was brilliant, but how many people got a chance to read it.

This trip will allow him to show what he knows as well as tell what he knows…it will also show that he and the USA with him will be received warmly by the rest of the world…unlike now with Bush.

Isn’t it interesting that the administration is finally coming around to a position, Obama has held for a long time?!! Surpise, Surprise!!

collins,Tx.   July 22nd, 2008 3:19 pm ET

The overseas trip embarked upon by Obama has positively portrayed him as a gay who is not only ready to lead our great country, but the kind of leader the world has been yawning for,he is informed and up to date with world affairs. This tripe is a challange for people still existing in the old world of Czechslovakia to update their memory chips before Obama vetos their every single beer(bill).

Gary from Charlotte, NC   July 22nd, 2008 3:19 pm ET

I sincerely believe the trip has greatly benefited Obama. First Obama has focused the political debate to when US troops leave a stable Iraq, irregardless of whether it is called a “timetable” or a “time horizon.”

McCain has to decide is “victory” means actually leaving a stable Iraq or simply staying forever. The old Republican adage of leaving equals losing is not politically sustainable when it is Iraq itself asking for the US to leave.

Additionally, it is difficult to place great foreign policy confidence in John McCain as a Presidential candidate when he does not even understand the borders of a country in which he voted that soldiers risk their lives. Iraq and Pakistan have no border except in McCain’s mind. But this is consistent as he thinks all of our economic woes are there also.

Since the American press and most of Europe have already anointed Sen Obama the new Messiah, it will result in ever more press coverage praising his every move and negative slants at Mc.Cain such as your blog. So, I think it will help some fence-sitters. There is no doubt that he’ll return from these hour long briefings a true expert on the region compared to Sen McCain’s experience. I’d just remind those caught up in the Obama euphoria of that old saying , ” a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.” But Jack, please do one thing. After President Obama’s magical 16 months , when Iraq goes to hell in a hand basket, don’t blame that one on Bush.

This trip is certainly giving us a very good glimpse into a possible McCain Administration. If you don’t know the answer, just scream “SURGE!” It seems to be McCains answer to everything.

Obama could continue to do very well during this trip…at least I “HOPE” so. I’m not so sure it will mean much in November. The economy will still be front and center.

John Miami   July 22nd, 2008 3:21 pm ET

No, as the limited issue voter won’t give him any credit for his now demonstrated “partnership” worldview. The reality is that Obama will have to spend his time defending himself from McCain’s ads blaming Obama, single handedly for the price of gas.

F. Taylor Ontario   July 22nd, 2008 3:22 pm ET

Well with McCain’s prowess in geography and history it will take someone with more than a grade 5 education to successfully compete against him. After all America wouldn’t want to elect an incompetent person as their commander and chief.

After closely watching all John McCain’s speeches and comments it has got me to wondering if he legitimately got those “D” grades in school or did he have to cheat?

Connie   July 22nd, 2008 3:22 pm ET

Obama’s trip is the best thing ever–will meet the shakers of the world and will be generating Good Will for the US for a change instead of Bush’s foreign policy which is negative to say the least.

As far as the old geezer Mccain–he should just keep critizing Obama
and letting the country realize that he has no idea how else to campaign—his best days were in 2000.

Victor in Saanich, B.C. Canada   July 22nd, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Yes Jack, just the way McBush’s ‘necessary’ overseas trip did for him. It puts Obama on the international stage and thus shows involvement outside the US!!

Drew from Green Bay, WI   July 22nd, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Yes, this will help Obama in November. You won’t exactly see a numbers boost after this trip in the polls, but Obama will have a lot to defend himself with. McCain can’t say, “When’s the last time you visited Europe/Middle East?” This trip will help highlight that foreigners like him, and because they do, he’s bound to be a good diplomat unlike Bush. The trip will also help highlight that he is right in line with what Iraq wants us to do in regards to withdrawal, so his judgement must not be that far off on foreign policy in general. McCain will also have a hard sell that Obama doesn’t know what he’s talking about after meeting the troops/generals.

Obama/Hagel ‘08!

This trip has blown up in McCain’s face. John McCain had an advantage over Obama on exactly one issue; Iraq. He lost that advantage yesterday and probably the election.

My entire family who are staunch repulicans… have been watching BO in the middle east this week… I almost fell off my chair when my parents announced to us (10) that they will be voting for BO. His reasoning “this man will change the face of America in a positive way”. WOW!! what a surprise for all of us (10). He is now trying to convince us to do the same. Personally, I have been extremely impressed with his presence there.

The throngs of Europeans that attend an Obama speech will be enthusiastic and hopeful. I doubt there will be any protesters in the crowd, shouting anti-America slurs and displaying anti-war signs.
Obama’s visit to Germany and France will be considered national holidays in these countries. His Europe tour is the first step in mending wounds and earning their trust again. It will not only help Obama, it will help us as a nation.

I hope he wins the Presidency, as McCain’s simplistic domestic policies and hawkish foreign policies would be tragic extensions of the Bush years. but, Obama lost my respect, and therefore my vote, when he reversed his position from filibuster to support of telecom immunity, secrecy, and questionable surveillance in the recent FISA amendments. now, I have become one of those bitter Pennsylvania voters, clinging to the remains of my 4th amendment rights.

Obama’s trip gives us a chance to see how little he knows about the conditions in Iraq. He seems to be stuck in about 2006 in relation to the accomplishments that have been made. He is also deluded if he believes that our troops can be completely withdrawn from the middle east. Our troops were there before the first Gulf War and they will be there for years to come and they will be there in large numbers unless we want to see things go to hell over there and I’m not speaking strictly about Iraq.

We have to learn to embrace and recognize greatness when its in our presence and not stifle or try to bring it down. Mccain and the Republicans are whining, Obama is simply micheal jordan and mccain is lesser than scotty pippen; of course jordan is going to be a bigger and better story.

Brendan, 14 yrs. old, San Diego, CA   July 22nd, 2008 3:29 pm ET

It will help Obama in November because when voter see a candidate or a political leader take a trip overseas voters tend to look at them more as a commander in chief. His overseas trip will boost his effectiveness on the national chances and on the campaign trail leading up to the election.

D.J.Lauter   July 22nd, 2008 3:30 pm ET

I think the trip will help Obama. Maybe it will keep McCain off his back even though McCain said that one trip doesn’t make an expert. People will see that McCain is jealous of the attention given Obama, and that the world leaders really like Obama, and they will be more willing to give Obama what he wants, instead of an old, temperamental , hard to get along with guy. Yes, I think the trip will help his standing in America since his views are compatible with those who are involved in this war.

this trip is an essential opportunity for Obama to demonstrate his foreign policty judgment, his ability to deal effectively with leaders abroad–including European and Middle Eastern critics, and his capacity as a diplomate and potential president to listen and understand others’ views, hopes, challenges, and dilemmas whether they do ro don’t coincide with American policy or interests. Obama has the potential, this is to say, to bring new light and hope to U.S. foreign relations–in the Middle East and in Europe–that are in tatters after eight years of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, and the rest–The “Not-Best” and “Not-Brightest” of this generation.

Joy in Vero Beach, Florida   July 22nd, 2008 3:35 pm ET

This trip will help him greatly. Contrary to what critics are saying, that Obama should be attacking McCain on the economy right now, he’s doing it the right way. In war you take out the opponent’s strongest positions first: missle defense, air force, etc. That allows you to control the skies and exploit your strengths.

Obama is about to wipe out John McCain’s strong point: National Security and Iraq. So instead of fighting that battle from the convention till Election Day, he’s now about to be free to carpet bomb McCain on the real issue of the day, the economy, from now till Election Day.

Brian, Cincinnati

Jason, Koloa, HI   July 22nd, 2008 3:35 pm ET

It’s important to anyone who is actually undecided. When they see how much the minorities and soldiers from economically challenged backgrounds serving in the armed forces love Obama, I don’t think anyone can doubt his ability to be commander in chief. When they see how much the rest of the planet loves the idea of an Obama presidency, you have to believe undecideds are going to swing in Obama’s direction.

CTB   July 22nd, 2008 3:35 pm ET

I don’t think McCain’s foreign policy advisors, Randy Scheunemann and Kori Schake ever seriously studied how the expectations of the Iraqis and the US domestic and international community’s interpretations of Obama’s trip might serve to make McCain look like a strategic bungler. Literally millions of people today understand that Obama’s foreign policy and national security sense on the Iraq and Afghanistan is the most logical given the current circumstances. Yet Scheunemann and Schake persist in saying Obama would rather lose a war in Iraq to win in Afghanistan. Yet, that’s not what Secretary Gates, ADM Mullen or General Petreaus are saying. Randy Scheunemann and Kori Schake haven’t served McCain well, (they have served him more like Donald Rumsfeld and Condolezza Rice served George Bush) and their consistent failings raises questions of McCain’s ability to choose foreign policy and national security advisors wisely and responsibly.

John in San Diego   July 22nd, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Obama has managed to look and sound very presidential, while McCain on his trips to the war zones has only managed to look and sound like a disoriented old soldier.

M Gallo   July 22nd, 2008 3:38 pm ET

His trip can only help him in the election. Just like anything else that’s happened so far. When comparisons are made between the way McCain and Obama handle situations, Obama will always come out ahead! It’s no longer a real competition.

don in Naples, Florida   July 22nd, 2008 3:39 pm ET

There aren’t many voters that care if a president has been overseas, has seen military combat, or has any experience with foreign policy. It doesn’t really matter. We want a patient man, who surrounds himself with very intelligent, curious people, who do love this country, who want to see America thrive through the very difficult times facing this nation. Our water supply continually shrinks everyday, no amount of war mongering will save that. As long as Obama selects men/women who do not have self serving agendas’, who can make decisions using strong critical thinking and foresight, we can feel very comfortable with the leadership of Obama over the next 4 years.

Shannon from Vancouver, WA   July 22nd, 2008 3:39 pm ET

This is a tremendous opportunity as it shows how incredible he is on the world stage. While the only thing that McCain ever says about Iraq is we should stay, Obama is showing how he views the big picture with Jordan, Israel, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq, and Palenstine and this is only his Middle East leg of the trip. McCain’s only defense and cry is that he won’t admit the surge is working. They have no response to any of the higher level discussions and thoughts Obama is conveying! I love this trip and it is a trip that has shown him in the best light!

It will improve his credibility. How much remains to be seen. Many seem to be very angry that he has made it this far. They seem to be looking for any reason for him to lose. He could be overqualified for the job and they would still have a problem. So yes is it will help with a few, but wow there are still so many just unwilling to buy in and they dont have any credible reason. Each seems to forget, no-one is qualified to be President until they have been President at least 2 years and to my knowledge that means, in the sense of truely qualified only first term Presidents are qualified, or Lyndon B Johnson and Gerald Ford, as second term Presidents are constitutionally disqualified. So hey this talk of Qualified is more of a distraction. If you are a truely qualified Senator or Governor, then you are qualified for any other Elected office.

After the last 7 1/2 years of the Bush Administration, our country was, for the first time in our history, being viewed very negatively on the world stage. Bush and his cohorts squandered the sympathy and good will that occurred after 9/11 and through their efforts, created a whole new generation of terrorists that view us as the big bad wolf.

There are so many reasons to choose Obama over McCain, but on this one point alone, we have the opportunity to restore our good standing in the rest of the world and become a partner in the fight for peace and prosperity in the world, rather than the aggressor and school bully.

On this trip, Obama has proven that he can rub elbows with commanders on the ground, high-ranking foreign officials, and our troops, and looks Presidential doing it. I hope it helps him immensely, but there will be people who cannot be convinced to vote for him, even if he ascends to the right hand of God.

Why in the world would anyone vote to maintain the status quo (McCain)?

Tyler, Pennsylvania   July 22nd, 2008 3:42 pm ET

This trip will give Barack Obama a stronger chance at winning the election. The American people want someone to lead them who is concerned with World issues and how are troops are doing over seas. Barack is showing that he cares and wants to get a first hand account of how badly this war is being ran. After this trip Obama will have gained more information about our war than our current President has during his entire tenure. I don’t see how interacting now, with the countries and troops he will be dealing with later, will hurt his chances of winning.

Im going to tell you the same thing you told your peer last week ” have you heard this man speak”? and I would like to add, have you seen the way he connects with people, have you seen the way people fall in love with him after getting to know him or meeting him. when he handles his own business he does just fine,it’s when other people speak for him or claim to represent him that causes him problems. his over seas trip will crush Mcsame. KEEP KEEPING IT REAL JACK.

The Iraqis are also resposible for the turn around in the violence. It’s their country do you not think they wish peace after years of violence. Do you not think they wish their children go to school and be able to see a doctor or maybe beable to just to live. Please think outside of your borders

Absolutely as it clearly demonstrates he knows how to discuss world affairs at a leadership level. It also pops a desperate McCain off the world stage leaving him with the samo samo anti Obama rhethoric. Geography does not appear to be McCains strong suite either. Obama speaks , McCain mis-speaks and slaps himself on the head!!

The only thing Obama must do is not give a back rub to the German Prime Minister. Then he is home free.

Whether people like it or not, this man is proving he is able to represent our country in a positive and respectful way. We need that right now. With all due respect to Senator McCain (and he does deserve a good amount), I believe representing the country is more than selecting more things to say “I told you so.” about. Its quite probable many voters in November will grow up and agree.

Obama’s trip overseas will neither make nor break his chances of being elected in November.

For those who already plan to vote for Obama, the trip just reinforces the reasons they plan to do so. For voters who are supporters of McCain and those who are still undecided, the trip is just another slick campaign ad, only this time using high profile leaders from other countries and all free of charge to Obama.

Obviously this trip has backfired on McCain. Obama is sailing through the election season so far. The only thing the Republicans have left are dirty tactics…like rumors of an early VP selection to swing the media cameras back in their direction. Maybe they’ll dust off the ‘ol color coded terror alert. Don’t laugh, it worked once!

The rest of the world along with us Americans are sick of George Bush and John McCain. Obama is a breath of fresh air.

Republicans for Obama 08!

It certainly can’t hurt… he has little experience and basically no credentials in foreign policy… however this trumps failed policy by a long shot… perhaps this can be viewed as a default choice… but it is a vote for hope.

I’d for one like to thank Barack for what he’s doing overseas. I can’t remember the last time we had so many world leaders and citizens of other nations as anxious as they are now in hearing what one of our premier political figures has to say.

Not to mention when he speaks, he actually knows what he’s talking about and is able to construct constructive and articulate statements. I’ve grown accustomed over the past eight years of people domestically and abroad running from the presence and words of these ‘politicians’. Barack appears to be genuine in his ability to actually want to hear the concerns of these individuals.

It will be amazing or should I say less so, the criticism he will face for being liked by those other than left of center Americans or those disaffected by the last eight years. Who knew being liked around the world would be such a bad thing.

It should help some what but we have to remember that most of the world’s population was shocked america voted for Bush and they probably lost all respect for our intellience for electing him again. It appears that america has become a very dangerous joke.

Obama’s trip overseas can, and so far has, helped him in many ways. In addition to the eloquent manner the preceding respondents have noted how he has fulfilled their hopes or failed to impress them let it also be pointed out here that Obama listens and learns. He is establishing first-hand knowledge of these other countries, their leaders, and their people. So far, it seems other countries’ responses show an eagerness to work with him.

Absolutely Jack. People overseas are anxiously awaiting for America to take the world lead again. Obama offers a foreign policy that will gain the respect of other nations. It’s no accident the europeans favor Obama over McCain. They get it. Obama offers the world hope, while McCain offers 4 more years of the same failed Bush polices. At present, America dosen’t seem to have a policy on much of anything, foreign or domestic. We just seem to be twisting in the wind fighting one fire after another with no plan or end result in sight. I believe most nations want to be lead and live in peace. Obama will offer leadership and a change in American Foreign policy that will offer hope for peace.

This trip will help him. I appreciate the fact that this is a fact finding mission and will help Obama make decisions when it comes to Security, war and humanity issues around the globe.

Now the dare mccain made to Obama, has come to pass and now he can take his foot out of his mouth.

Thanks mccain, with out you opening your mouth, the world would have never seen history
