I am flabbergasted about the naivete of many of the comments. It's the law of supply /demand, STUPID! No amount of political grandstanding by our esteemed senators, no begging to OPEC, no wishful thinking about miraculous new technologies, no government fiats and no unreasonable expectations for overnight change in our consumption habits will change THAT! If prices stay at the current levels or escalate further, it will encourage conservation and if our congress and president
allow policies to increase supply of all forms of energy - not by interfering but keeping their hands off - the equation will change for the better!

Mr. Cafferty,

A short term solution is long behind us. They told us in the late 70's that we were running out of oil and began gas rationing as a scare tactic to run up the price of gasoline. It worked. But, now our dependence on foriegn oil is a true problem. I have a plan.

I understand that the U.S. has a 200 year oil reserve and in the last State of the Union Address, our president stated he would like to double that. My plan is to begin using it. I would stop buying foriegn oil and tell the scientific community they have 200 years to find another fuel source. I would take the money the government was spending on foriegn oil and divert it to this effort. That would give us about two and half generations to come up with an answer. If we don't find it, then we will be able to solve the obesity and fitness problem when Americans have to start commuting by bicycle.

I have common sense answers to many of the other problems faced by our nation. Truly exercise your right to vote by refusing to select from the menu. Write me in for President of the United States.

What about algae oil? Easy to produce. Yields 100,000 gallons per acre while cleaning pollutants out of the air. Why aren't we hearing more about this?

In addition to setting substantially higher mileage standards for autos sold in the U.S. and instituting a national 55 mile an hour speed limit, our government should fund a massive Manhattan type Energy Research Project focused on solar, wind and tidal energy. This project should deal with means of distribution as well as the actual sources of energy.

With our current "leaders," perhaps you should begin asking, "What are we going to do in 20 years when Global Warming makes life on earth unbearable?

It's not like our leaders didn't know about our energy issues 30 years ago. Democrats supported the ecologists, preventing nuclear energy from being built, while the Republicans tried to squash alternative energy in support of Big Oil.

We the people, are the deserving losers in their fight.
And I apologize to Lou Dobbs, but sometimes I don't think we 'deserve a government that works.' Look at the leadership the voters have chosen.

The answer is simple: Promote and *incentivize* alternative fuel development, production and application.

Why are there so few EVs (Electric Vehicles) on the road, as well as few power-up stations for them? Create market incentives, which in turn will create jobs.

Last time I checked, Venezuela has extensive oil reserves. And this administration has turned its back on that country. Why?

To expand domestic oil production is silly. What happens when that oil gets tapped out? What happens when there's a spill in the fragile ecosystem in Alaska?

Jack,
The oil prices may continue to rise until we (the USA) get out of the Middle East. There is a message in there somewhere. Until then, for some immediate solutions: we can car pool, use mass transit, ride bicycles, and stay home more.

With the price of oil and gasoline going out of sight, hydrogen could be the answer as an additive to jet fuel. As a former airline employee, I see
where hydrogen engines for airplanes or a hydrogen injection system into current engines might be possible after the plane is at cruising altitude. I understand that when hydrogen is burned, the exhaust is part water vapor. This mist would filter carbons out of the air and help the greenhouse gas and global warming. Has anyone thought of this?
Airplanes could be refueled when they land and are serviced.

City planners everywhere should now began to prepare for the interval that we should expect by redrawing maps of streets, cities and freeways to accommodate the bicycle, scooter and pedestrian economy that is coming. There will be no reprieve.
