Why would Clinton not tell the truth about her 1996 Bosnia trip?

FROM CNN's Jack Cafferty:

On two different occasions, Senator Hillary Clinton has described a trip she took as first lady to Bosnia in March of 1996.

To hear her tell it, she was lucky to escape with her life, landing in a hail of sniper fire. She said they were forced to cut short the greeting ceremony at the airport and, "run with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."

But apparently there was time to stop and visit at the airport with an 8-year-old girl who greeted Mrs. Clinton on the tarmac when she landed and read her a poem.

The military commander on hand to greet Clinton at the time, Major General William Nash, told the Washington Post he was unaware of any sniper threat to Clinton during her 8-hour stay.

Also traveling with the first lady was her daughter Chelsea, the singer Sheryl Crow and the comedian Sinbad, who said the scariest part of the trip was deciding where to eat.

Hillary Clinton claims that she was sent to places that her husband, President Clinton, could not go because they were "too dangerous."

Back to Sinbad... When commenting on Clinton's version of events, he said, "What kind of president would say, 'Hey man, I can't go because I might get shot… but I'm gonna send my wife and daughter. Oh and take a guitar player and a comedian with you.'"

The Washington Post has awarded Senator Clinton "4 Pinnochios" for her story about Bosnia, which it gives for major "whoppers."

Now that all this has come to light, Clinton's campaign is allowing as how she may have "misspoke" about her 1996 trip.

Here’s my question to you: Why would Hillary Clinton not tell the truth about her trip to Bosnia in March of 1996?

Interested to know which ones made it on air?

Marie from Charleston, South Carolina writes:
We know the reason: to bolster her "foreign policy experience" credentials. The sad thing to me is that she has plenty of legitimate credentials to recommend her. This type of resume padding makes people question everything else she touts as experience, which is the crux of her campaign.

Bob from Richmond, Virginia writes:
Jack, She was just using a common resume-building technique, citing experience if you are in the general vicinity of a job requirement. She also ignored the number one resume fudging rule: don't lie if there are witnesses!

Dennis from Spokane, Washington writes:
Misspoke. Sure, I always imagine sniper fire when my plane lands. Good that Chelsea survived the trauma of listening to that poem while her mom was getting those scary flowers.

Alexa from Lovettsville, Virginia writes:
For the same reason as Obama lied about being in church when Wright was on one of his rants, and when Obama lied about Rezko, and when Obama lied about his campaign advisor meeting with the Canadians, and when Obama lied about how much money Rezko donated to him, etc., etc., etc. It's called politics.

Stephen from New Jersey writes:
She wouldn't lie about that to get elected anymore than she and Bill would look into the cameras of 60 Minutes and lie about extramarital affairs to get him elected president.

Garnet from Corning, Ohio writes:
Jack, If she was as qualified as she says she is on day one, she wouldn't have to stretch the truth. After this one, I ask America, what else is she stretching the truth about? My boys are dying and being injured for life for one lie, do we really want another one? One more thing, what about your tax records, Hillary?

Dan from Texas writes:
Besides dodging sniper fire, Hillary single-handedly saves her fellow travelers by frisking down a suspected suicide bomber dressed as an 8-year-old girl! Too funny! Hillary and Chelsea to the rescue!

For the same reason Bush and Cheney won"t tell anyone about the secret meetings with OPEC. They're all locked up in that big safe Cheney has in his office. I hope there's still room in it for Hillary to take up residence.

She can't come up with the facts to support her contention that she is experienced. So in the tradition of G.W. Bush et al and the Iraq war, just make up stuff and tell it with a straight face.

Hey it works, as no one seems to question it, until it is to late. Then we are expected to forget the past and to move on and "focus on the future".

The only question is the age old which came first.... the chicken or the egg? Did Bush learn to lie from the Clintons, or vice versa? (If your're thinking "I did not have sex with that woman" don't forget "read my lips".)

Simply because she has a problem with honesty and reality. You might as well have asked why she is still desparately fighting a nomination that commonsense predicts that she can never really win. Or do you believe she is already battling senility at her age. I don't think so.

    Jack,
She doesn't want us to know that her most important decision was where to have a meal. The Clintons rewrite history more than they make it. Did Albright give Hillary credit in her book for doing anything great in Bosnia?

If one were charitable, one could suggest amnesia, or some other medical condition. A less charitable explanation would be that, being in power for so long and so used to political expediencies, she cannot distinguish fact from fiction or thinks she is above the truth. Either way, it questions her capacity to be President and, in the words of a close member of her family, her Bosnia account is just a "fairytale".

It is called Embellishing, kind of like the truth but mostly it is a lot of frill(an ornamental addition) Kind of like the idea that living in the white house for 8 years counts as Experience.

Good question Jack. Maybe Hillary Clinton took her lead from Bill. He seemed to come out of his Presidential Lies and mistruths unscathed. Either way, her mistruths, embellishments, and lies are clear examples of why this country is in the pickle it is in. She does a good job of hammering the Bush Administration of misleading the American public, yet she does the same thing herself and obviously does it quite well. Sen Clintons campaign like President Bush, has does a good job of shoveling out lies, half truths, misleading statements and over embellishments of facts.

What is this, have you started negative campaigning against Clinton so Obama doesn't have to? Wow Jack, a new low! Bush hasn't told the truth in 8 years, it must not be important if you wouldn't report that.

The fact that she has been to Bosnia is in itself a plus over Obama! I can't remember a lot of 1996, Roberto Gonzales never could remember anything, nor Nixon, I even remember Reagon not recalling important events. And Bush, nuff said! from time to time stuff slips out. Is it important, doesn't seem to be!

Jack are you asking me if politicians lie, really? Do you think Obama is a saint? Come on, Jack!

Jack, the Clintons history of truthfullness is not exactly hindered by the truth. Their campaigning style is simple. Tell any and all lies, half truths and misinformation to everybody that they can, and when the press calls them on it, complain that the press is gender bashing and being unfair. The sad thing is that it works. I gues it depends on what the definition of "is" is. Oak Lawn, IL

    Jack,

Why don't you just admit you are an unabashed Clinton hater? Your biased commentary does a disservice to the thousands of Clinton supporters who have voted in this primary. Yes, Obama may be in the lead now, but that does not discount that many, many people view Clinton as the best candidate and have yet to vote. There is nothing balanced about your views. It is too bad that CNN chooses to hire people with such mean spirited and closed minded opinions. I for one am turned off of your network. I don't need to pay to watch CNN provide nothing but biased opinions. The network shold return to reporting facts, not opinions.

Clinton was certainly padding her experience resume...but what bothers me the most is the audacity in her thinking she wouldn't get caught. Surely she is not so naive to believe in this youtube world, that video of her actual trip wouldn't have surfaced. So is she just not in touch with the actual world around her...or does she think she can't be touched by it?

Senator Clinton will lie to serve her own very selfish needs, while helping McCain to victory in November.

If I were the Clinton's I would simply pack up my belongings and move somewhere that has people that actually appreciate what is done for their betterment. I am continually disappointed in the people of this country. As far as I can tell the Clinton's work tirelessly in support of others and people seem to want only to tear them down. Rush and his crew must just love the fact that Americans can be led to rip apart those that work for them most. Of course, the same people that attack the Clintons are most likely responsible for what we have had for the last 7 or so years.

At the very least Clinton showed that she honored and respected our troops that can't be said for all the Republicans in the congress. She should be proud to have been able to show our troops that the Clinton administration did appreciate their efforts in the name of our country.

Besides she tipped her hat at the troops who served to save thousands of Bosnians from ethnic cleaning, their detail was an act of compassion by our country which led the effort to stop the killing in Bosnia.

There is no doubt that Clinton needn't exaggerate her credentials as our First Lady as we all know of her involvement in government from those days. The Republicans certainly did their best to expose her machinations in her attempt to help foster "Health Care Reform", etc...

It sure would be better for Clinton to re-acquaint us about her activities as NY Senator for over 8 years, her record in the Senate is more than enough to commend her for high office including the presidency. After all she has been a Senator as long as John Kennedy was before he ran for the presidency. The same cannot be said of Senator Obama.

The current issue of this blog, her visit to Bosnia, is small potatoes compared to what Obama said to us in one of the debates where he said that his relationship with Rezko was merely as an advocate for the law firm he was with in a transaction dealing with a church group.

As it turned out Obama had many more dealings with Rezko and it is still to come out exactly what all of those were.

Is a mistake on what happened on a trip of the same seriousness as statements made about a relationship with Rezko, a person indicted for fraud?

I think that Clinton's mistake is not of the same ilk as Obama's misstatements of fact including how by omission he forgot to mention his personal dealings with Rezko, etc...

Because the Clinton hate losing and she'll do whatever it takes. I believe she says whatever she wants, if she thinks it will appeal to the people she's talking to at that moment. HRC relies on the fact that some of the people who hear her lies will never hear the follow-up news that what she said is untrue, and that's probably fair to bet since many people don't really follow the news closely.

The silly thing is that Clinton didn't NEED to exaggerate her story. I mean, she was in BOSNIA; which is already pretty gutsy. This just makes her look really opportunistic - a characteristic that has become all too apparent over the past few months. Did she "misremember" the details of her trip? When etched against the backdrop of bigger issues - and bigger "whoppers" - by Bush administration officials and others, does it matter? I think it's an item for hairsplitting journalists on a slow newsday.

If you watched your spouse tell material lies as President and get away with it, wouldn't you believe that lying is simply a prerequisite to being President? What's extraordinary is that the attack on her flight never happened, however, she maintains that it did in light of witnesses and evidence that proves otherwise. But then again Jack, she believes she's winning the presidential race too. As a spectator, Hillary Clinton appears delusional and John McCain can't remember if the Sunni or Shiite Muslims are crossing into Iraq to train terrorists. With these deficiencies I would trust Hillary or McCain to run this country. Barack Obama was right, it all comes down to judgment. Since Barack Obama hasn't appeared to have lost his mind, I'm voting for him Jack.

Embellishments are made every day, but who is to say she did not tell the truth? Some may question your declaration of being an impartial and informed newsperson. These last few weeks, I certainly have! Does it make you a liar to assert those claims? The reason Obama does not make assertions of foreign policy experience is BECAUSE HE DOESN'T HAVE ANY, REAL OR IMAGINARY!!! Could it be that maybe Sinbad is promoting Obama at the expense of Senator Clinton? Just a thought.

It can't be Obama. When the Wright story broke, Obama's first instinct was to lie about it. "I didn't hear those....". When he figured out that it could be proven that he knew what Wright was saying, he came out with his race speech. He whines whenever anyone says anything that could be considered as to referring to race but now this is supposed to be the central issue. His campaign went out of their way to dig up the information on Geraldine Ferraro from some obscure paper in California and they crucified her. How is that the high ground? I guess I am just a typical white person but he is playing the race card for sympathy from his supporters that is undeserved.

jack ask another question because hillary has not been truthful about any think in her campaign from the get go, why would this one be different. were are the task records. All she is Good at is playing with peoples mines and hope that Americans are still stupid enough not to see through her endless effort to blind fold the people of this nation.
The people of this conutry need change to a different direction, and are hungry for unity and economic development, we cannot aford to have comminist china to be the next super power.

Because her whole campaign is based on fabrications and out right lies, if we judge her for her separate from Bill and based on her own qualifications...she has none. Glad to see someone in the mainstream media has the balls to report this instead of trying to keep it a horse race, she can't win. This is worse than the Wright "fiasco" because this came from her own mouth. Every person who has backed up her story is an ardant Clinton supporter. No shame.

Clearly she has a problem with reality. The idea that she can win the nomination without resorting to dirty tricks is a case-in-point. That she would lie about something so well documented also raises some serious questions about her judgment ... Does she think we are idiots?!

Because she is so desperate to become President, she'll say or do anything, even going so far as destroying the party.. If Obama becomes the Democratic nominee – I envision Clinton becoming McCain’s vice presidential running mate as an Independent – both running on a bi-partisan ticket against Obama and whom ever he chooses as his running mate. Clinton is so determined to become president - or get as close to it as she can - because of McCain’s age; this scenario may not be as crazy as it sounds. Ironically, the Republicans voting for Clinton in the primaries to hurt Obama would get to vote for her again. How funny would that be?

Easy Jack, She started on a lie and had to keep on with the lies. She figured she had to stay on that course since a lot of Americans with all due respect, hardly understand what goes on outside of that great country. Thanks to the modern media, no lies now stay in the dark before it`s brought to light. What goes around, comes around. Even NAFTA and the meeting with the Canadian diplomats by her folks and not Obama`s folks as she made us believe, has also come to light. See why she rates low with the majority of the demacrats? Heaven help us!!!

Because the Clintons don't know how to tell the truth. She lies with a straight face, then when she's caught, she has to come up with another lie to explain the first lie. It's like a disease to them, they just continue to lie. What other truths will come out? To say that she "misspoke" is a joke. She's trying to embellish her foreign experience with lies. Keep checking her schedule...what's the story with all those "priviate meetings" with any descriptions blanked out. They definitely don't want the American people to know the truth.

Do you really need to ask this question, Jack? Because it proves she had much less experience in foreign relations than she claims and it's likely she's exaggerating about other things as well that she wants to take credit for that actually were accomplishments of her husband and others in his administration.

I really would like to vote for an accomplished woman for President. There are plenty. Maybe one of them will finally gain the name recognition needed to run for President. Maybe one will be nominated as Obama's VP. I hope so.

For now, Senator Obama, will have my vote for President. His judgement argument make sense to me. It's how you decide even when you have no experience that matters.

Everyone tells tales Jack, and I'm guessing she did this because she is a politician, and is playing up the situation to make it sound much worse than it was, to try and sound like she knows more than she does about the big bad world out there. Both Her and Obama have exaggerated and outright lied to us throughout the campaign.

Who in their right mind would send his wife into danger, who in turn then decided their 16 year old daughter should go as well. Were they expendable in Bills eyes?? Must have been.

When Hillary says "I have the experience" all I hear is Bill saying "That depends on what your definition of is, is" or" "I did not have sexual relations with that woman". Lies, all lies. She and Bill are two peas in a pod.

    Jack,

Hillary Clinton feels entitled to becoming the next President. She has based her whole campaign on her having more experience. After the release of records along with all the evidence it is clear to me that she is a liar. She is counting on the fact that most people have short memories.
She lied about Bosnia, Macedonia, Northern Ireland, NAFTA, MI and FL revote, passing FMLA etc.

This where journalists come in. I am surprised by the fact that media has not caught on. In polls about honesty Hillary got 44% of votes. I am shocked that with all the documented evidence she got 44% votes.

Thank your Jack for asking these questions. You are the only reason why I watch CNN these days.

Entitlement! The Clintons apparently believe that no matter what they say it is to be believed. They have not yet figured out the Americans can really think for themselves and do.

To date we have been 7 ways to changed the results of the Democratic Nomination to give her the nomination even though she's in second place.

Today we have a new methodology thrown in the bag, "Electoral votes" which has never been used to decide a presidential nomination, NAFTA yes I supported it though I did not like it to now It's not a good idea and is hurting hard working Americans in Ohio and Penn, acknowledging publicy that FL & MI did not count, then saying no it was a fair race either give me my votes or less do a revote. This in the face of knowing that the FL & MI Dems are responsible for changing the primaries in the face of warnings from the DNC that they would not be seated, Resolution of the mortgage crisis to pay for a Panel however, she fails to realize that it was Congress' job to prevent this disaster the very Congress that she basis her significant experience on and has been part of for many years. But let's have the Tax Payers pay more to have a Panel figure out a solution while hard working Americans are paying congress DAILY to not only prevent this type of economic downturn but now that they missed the boat, resolve it. It's always let's spend the very tax payers money who are loosing their homes to solve the crisis.

Perhaps giving back the $384M she received in Pork Barrell Spending that is not yet spent and which she refuses to disclose what she is planning to spend the money on would be a very generous start that will show a true commitment on behalf of Sen. Clinton to truly helping to solve the mortgage crisis. After all every little bit helps.

Finally the trillion dollars spent in the war that she voted for could have certainly not only prevented this crisis but help with gas prices, and the many other adverse economic woes we are now facing. Just what is Congress' job responsibility?

This candidate will say, do, and lie about anything to achieve her goal. We have had 7 years of that, enough already. Cafferty: Why would Clinton not tell the truth about her 1996 Bosnia trip?
    Posted: 02:39 PM ET

First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton kisses Emina Bicakcic, aged eight, from Sarajevo who dedicated a poem to her shortly after her arrival at the Tuzla Air Base, Monday March 25, 1996.

Fabricating stories and telling “whoppers” come easy for the Clintons, but they must still be living in the 90’s if they think they can get away with it.

Why? Because she is power hungry, dishonest and feels she is owed the presidency. She has a lot in common with George W Bush in that she feels she has the right to lie to the American Public. They both believe that the end justifies the end. At least Bush thinks he is Lying for a higher purpose "God and Country" Hillary is just lying for herself. This is just another reason to fear for America under Hillary Clinton, Just like her and Bill's tendency to take their share of the cash off the top. I am not voting on "past experience" in this election anyway. Where has gotten us? Rather I am looking for someone new who is willing to look at the whole situation from a new angle. I don't think her misspeaking compares at all to a man who would sit in a church for 20 yrs and listen to his "mentor and friend" trash our country. How do you think our soldiers must feel to hear that Obama sat by and listened to the anti American rhetoric that Rev Wright handed out in his sermons. Good speeches do not erase the fact that Obama used very poor judgement in continuing to go to that church and even use him on his campaign committee until very, very recently.

After several unfair and distracting posts on CNN about Sen. Obama, finally one fair question.

When the Irish Peace Noble Prize winner called Sen. Clinton's comments on her role in North Ireland "a wee bit silly," Sen. Clinton needs to stick to another role she fabricated for herself in her campaign.

She is tearing our party apart, just look recently how many hateful comments are posted on CNN and MSNBC from her supporters toward Sen. Obama. She is spreading hate, this is not going to work for in the general election no matter which one gets the nomination. She should stop lying and spreading hate.

It's been reported many times over that Clinton will do anything to win even if that means damaging the Democratic Party. So is anyone really surprise that lying and exaggerating her experience is in that category.

Listen even Clinton's close friend Gov. Bill Richardson endorsed Obama as our next Commander in Chief. He said, "Barack Obama will make a great and historic president. [It] is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our nation and you [Barack Obama] are a once-in-a-lifetime leader." Now certainly this sheds much light on the situation and should help the America people in deciding the nominee.

It's time for REAL change in America, it's time for Barack Obama for President!

Lets see – HIllary not honest (resume and spouse issues), Obama not honest (radical racist issues), McCain not honest (blonde lobbyist issues). Doesnt leave us much else now does it? Sad state of affairs. Can someone please teach me how to sing the Canadian anthem?
