The person needs to have executive experience as a Governor.
This would assure Americans of continuity in the event of Mr. McCains demise to natural old age while in office. This person needs to be astute, eloquent, and capable of carrying 100% of the ball on national defense, foreign affairs, and the economy.

John McCain should pick a running mate who he feels would best run the country in the event something should happen to him, the same way Bill Clinton went about choosing a running mate. Having said that, if he decides to pick someone who is to the right of him, it should be someone who would not risk alienating independents from McCain's support. He would be wise to pick someone who he can have a good relationship with(not Romney) and with whom he can work closely.

Hi Jack, I'm certain that it doesn't matter. This guy supports the Bush doctrine and irresponsible financial policies that have led to almost 8 years of a poor economy. He supports the war and rationalizes the possibility of being there for 100 years. He ignores the 40 million people in this country that do not have health care and believes the private insurance companies will find it in their hearts to make it affordable for them.

I think it's obvious that the chief executive of our company needs to display a certain common sense to lead our country in these times of peril. But, then again, look who he'd be replacing.

It's a scary proposition to me: McCain is old and his VP could well become President. And, the chances of him winning in November are very high, given the Dems' floundering about now between two weak candidates.

Of course, he will select a VP that complements his own strengths and weaknesses, one that will fill in the gaps that he exhibits, especially with evangelicals. If he decides to go with someone who best represents his values, it would behoove him to ask Bush, since he's never actually been VP. But does it really matter? With millions voting for democrats and thousands voting for republicans he can ask just about anybody he wants and it won't make a difference.

Now that Senator McCain has clinched the GOP nomination, he needs to think of who would be the best running mate. Naturally, he shoud select someone who is experienced, trusted, and previously "tested" under fire. If I were Senator McCain, I'd pick former Secretary of State Colin Powell. Powell has both the military background and the foreign policy experience to make a great V.P. Jack, this is a no-brainer!

As we begin to see the democratic party descend into chaos, He can pcik just about anyone, including Dick Cheney or even you.

Does anyone find it suspicious that Huckabee dropped out of the race right after he surpassed Romney for 2nd on the delegate count? My theory is that Huckabee is taking precautionary measures in order to secure or at least attempt to be the nominee if G-d forbid McCain developes any sort of serious medical condition within the next 6 months that might cause him to drop out. I think Huckabee should be VP he obviously can hold the south and he is a true conservative which will help McCain with the more conservative voters. And I think Huckabee's plan for the economy and building infrastructure could help in Ohio.

The only suggestion I can come up with is Ron Paul, he appears to have good policy and should be able to pull in the critical independents.

Charlie Christ of Florida would be a good choice and fit McCains style. I hope it isnt him because, as a democrat, if we have to have a Republican Governor in Florida Christ would be my #1 choice.

If McCain really wants to "make it happen" then he should go hard after Colin Powell. If he pulled that off, and the dems continue this riduculous waste of time in the primary (Obama is the candidate of the people–but Hillary will probably get it handed to her at the convention), it might be a landslide.

It's simple, he should pick someone who is good at gaining the voters he is not. If he has any hope to beat either Obama or Hillary, he needs to ensure that a minimal amount of republicans are voting for the democratic candidate.

I think if McCain picked a personable conservative like Mike Huckabee, he would make up some lost ground. He should choose someone to hold the base together with the core issues intact, whether or not McCain agrees with some of them. He should squeak by with a win, but could make it a wider margin by choosing the right VP.

I think I'd be easier for him if he knew who he was running against. If its Hillary, the conservatives will be coming out in droves to keep her out of the White House, so he can focus more on picking someone who is young or from a swing state. If it is Obama, it becomes more important for him to sure up conservative support with a conservative VP. Throwing out politics, I think Huckabee deserves the nod. He put up a great fight, was couragous and respectful, and he brings the charisma that John McCain simply has only heard about.

McCain's best bet would be to pick some sort of evil clone of Hillary and/or Obama. Condi Rice looks ideal but I think we've had about as much of her as we can stand. A strong experienced female like Elizabeth Dole or Kay Bailey Hutchison could swing the disenfranchised Clinton voters if Obama becomes the nominee. Colin Powell would also make a strong VP, but I don't think he wants back in the white house. McCain could also go with a 'Dan Quayle' young buck type. I know it sounds ridiculous but it didn't stop the President's father from getting elected. The best candidate would then become John E. Sununu, the 43-year-old Catholic from New Hampshire.

I agree with Don Kite – Colin Powell. He's well respected and I like the fact that he got out of politics. Someone who saw the system going badly and chose not to get dragged into it has my respect. Plus, this drops the race card issue if Obama should win. Could Colin lead if McCain should pass away? I think he could.

The alternative would be Huckabee. But, for the heck of it, how about Limbaugh or Coulter? It's great to be in a position to criticize constantly, but have they ever served in office? It really doesn't matter who he picks because Hillary has decided that if she can't win the nomination for the Democrats she is going to make damn sure that Obama can not win the White House. Maybe she is running for the VP of the Republican Partly.

John McCain should pick a loyal Republican who is ready to be President on day one. Whether the candidate is a conservative, a woman, an African American, or the governor of a battleground state is of no real significance. Mr. McCain is 71 years old and in seemingly good health but the American people need to know that his second in command can step in at a moment's notice and run the country.

mccain needs to do the opposite of what bush had to do. he needs a younger vp with good economic credentials and is one who is not a bigger name than him. mccain is the war hero who is known for having a mind of his own. his VP needs to be someone this generation can identify with.

Since they are such good friends, maybe McCain should consider Hillary Clinton. Hillary has been such a great help to the Republicans in the primary election as demonstrated by her Obama bashing. Her efforts should be rewarded by officially being on the ticket with the party.

McCain needs to use his choice to deal with his charisma deficit. Maybe someone with hair. Bush needed Cheney because he lacked experience. Clinton I needed Gore because he was all about the future. McCain needs someone who is exciting, younger, credible. Regional candidates have not really been helpful in the last few elections. (Edwards, Dole). If he chooses a far right idealogue, he's going to regret it.

Has anyone said how old John McCain's father was when he passed on? Men usually follow the male genes in longevity. Obviously he needs to pick someone that will be young enough to hold office for about 8 to 16 years. Hillary has decided to destroy the Democratic Party, and it will take that long before it even begins to show life again after she is done with it.

I suggest John McCain spit in the wind and see who it hits or throw darts at all the photos of the long list. He's not going to win anyway so who the hell cares who he pick.

why doesn't he just pick the current occupant of the white house for his running mate since a vote for McCain means a continuation of blunders of the bush adminstration!

McCain's ultimate choice for running mate will be of much significance in this election given the ongoing, divisive talk of his conservative values. Ideally, he should consider someone that would heal the broken ties between him and the ultra-conservatives. And perhaps someone of a younger age would add some zest to the Republican ticket, because if you ask me, this country is ready for some young blood in Washington that would rid this nation of a fruitless foreign policy. However, hopefully those who truly want such changes will choose the opponent of McCain and his potential spring chicken of a running mate.

They should choose Jack. Unfortunately, Jack would add far too much intelligence to the team and that would not be an acceptable quality for any RNC administration.

Go and pick the bingo winner out of the local town hall so in this way we will have a companion of similar interests in the oval office.

Perhaps McCain should do the right thing and pick a QUALIFIED running mate, rather than make a decision that only affects his electability. The "political game" is ridiculous.

Just let Cheney head the committee, and he can "choose" himself.

Jack, you can at least give the guy a little break from your bias to the left... McCain, as well as any candidate from any party, can employ any strategy he/she sees fit to find the right running mate. I applaude him for at least taking some time to find the right person for him.
