FROM CNN's Jack Cafferty:

Now that John McCain has clinched the Republican presidential nomination, people are wondering who fill out the number twp position on the ticket.

The New York Times reports that McCain and his advisers insist there's no short list of names for vice president. Instead, the candidate has directed his campaign to study past methods that nominees have used to pick their running mates.

Some suggest that McCain's selection of a vice presidential candidate is even more important than usual, given his age. If he wins, McCain will be 72 when he enters office. That's the oldest candidate ever elected to a first term.

Of course, there are already some names floating around out there, including several governors – like Florida's Charlie Crist and Minnesota's Tim Pawlenty – whose executive experience could be a nice plus for the ticket. Some former governors, like Pennsylvania's Tom Ridge, have been mentioned as well. Of course, there are also the former governors Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee, who were McCain's rivals until recently.

One expert says McCain has three choices: he could pick a conservative to rally the base, he could go with someone who has crossover appeal to attract independents, or he could make it a "geographical decision" and try to win a specific swing state or region.

Here’s my question to you: How should John McCain go about selecting his running mate?

Interested to know which ones made it on air?

William from San Diego writes:
John McCain’s main weakness is the conservative base. Look at the numbers in Texas: 38% for Huckabee and 51% for McCain. If he goes into the general election lacking 500,000 votes in Texas, he would stand no chance against the Democratic nominee. It is vital he chooses either Huckabee or Romney, and appeals to all the conservatives he’s failed to impress.

Aileen writes:
John McCain has to pick someone with more than a room temperature I.Q. who acknowledges the diversity of religious belief in our country.

David writes:
George Bush may punk him into picking Jeb Bush.

Sky writes:
Maybe he should look over at Shady Pines. There should be plenty of his contemporaries there. He might even find one who agrees with his brilliant suggestion to keep our GIs in Iraq for 100 years!

Ed from Houston writes:
McCain should let Rush Limbaugh help him pick the VP candidate as soon as possible. It sounds by his comments today regarding a Clinton/Obama dream ticket that he will be reentering rehab again soon.

Jake from New York writes:
John McCain should choose a somewhat younger running mate with shared ideals and executive experience. I personally hope that McCain chooses Charlie Crist.

Dan from Gulfport, Florida writes:
Jack, Unfortunately, many potential candidates are in jail or soon will be. McCain might be better off if he placed an ad in the "jobs available" section of the NY Times. The nice thing is that after Dick Cheney, the bar for V.P. is so low that it won't be difficult for anyone to hop over it. My personal recommendation would be Senator Larry Craig. He would lock up the public restroom vote, and there might not be many other places Republicans will be able to find votes this year.

Vinnie from New York writes:
Jack, In order to win, he better dig up Ronald Regan.

Pick some one much younger incase he don't make it since he is as old as dirt.

Jack K. Fort Myers, FL   March 5th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

He needs to find someone a litle more youthful than himself–he needs to connect with younger voters.

The person needs to have executive experience as a Governor.
This would assure Americans of continuity in the event of Mr. McCains demise to natural old age while in office. This person needs to be astute, eloquent, and capable of carrying 100% of the ball on national defense, foreign affairs, and the economy.

If it is member of our congress–it had bette be a damned good one.

Charlie Crist of Florida comes to mind.

Brooke   March 5th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

Not by asking Cheney. I recall Cheney was asked to help President Bush select someone to be Bush's vice president. Next thing we know Cheney is that someone!

Brian From Fort Mill, S.C.   March 5th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

Naturally, he should pick someone that is essentially the opposite of him. His running mate should be young, energetic and charismatic. Maybe he should pick Barack Obama!

Max   March 5th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

Absolutely.

Even as a Liberal Democrat I believe John McCain should do the very best to show his supporters that he means business.

Meanwhile Hillary and her supporters can take a quick math class to understand present realities.

Jim from B.C.   March 5th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

By choosing the obvious perfect candidate: Hillary Clinton.

Chuck   March 5th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

JACK; Just "flip-a-coin!" In my opinion, one's as bad as another!......but WAIT!.....maybe Cheney could take him HUNTING....as a parting gesture....and.......who knows??

Joe in DE   March 5th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

Jeb Bush would be ideal. He reflects McCain values & judgement. Beside he would enjoy being over a Bush.

Kevin- Webster, MA   March 5th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

He needs one that can beat the Democrats. I'm not so sure he can do it alone.

Christian Chicago, IL   March 5th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

John McCain should pick a running mate who he feels would best run the country in the event something should happen to him, the same way Bill Clinton went about choosing a running mate. Having said that, if he decides to pick someone who is to the right of him, it should be someone who would not risk alienating independents from McCain's support. He would be wise to pick someone who he can have a good relationship with(not Romney) and with whom he can work closely.

M. Fentz   March 5th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

I don't think it will make any difference how McCain picks his
running mate, either one will be bad.

Ron   March 5th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

Hi Jack, I'm certain that it doesn't matter. This guy supports the Bush doctrine and irresponsible financial policies that have led to almost 8 years of a poor economy. He supports the war and rationalizes the possibility of being there for 100 years. He ignores the 40 million people in this country that do not have health care and believes the private insurance companies will find it in their hearts to make it affordable for them.

I think it's obvious that the chief executive of our company needs to display a certain common sense to lead our country in these times of peril. But, then again, look who he'd be replacing.

richard debona   March 5th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

jack have him pick anyone that has never met been scean or knows who george w bush is .

Arnold,WV   March 5th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

If Clinton and Obama have to spend millions more dollars and for Clinton to contiune to use the level of negativity that she had to stoop to the last few days for 3 or 4 more months while McCain started his fall campain today no one can convince me that the republicans don't havea huge advantage.

L.M.,Arizona   March 5th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

A fairly young white conserative guy from Florida,Ohio,or Missouri that should be enough to beat either Obama or Clinton.he only chance either has is together with Clinton for president and Obama for vice-president,but it won't happen. T

Mark - Asheville, NC   March 5th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

It's a scary proposition to me: McCain is old and his VP could well become President. And, the chances of him winning in November are very high, given the Dems' floundering about now between two weak candidates.

Of course, he will select a VP that complements his own strengths and weaknesses, one that will fill in the gaps that he exhibits, especially with evangelicals. Thus, I fear he will go with Huckabee, who has hinted more than once that he favors a theocracy. That is truly frightening, so the Dems had better think about nominating a candidate who can WIN!!!

Paul   March 5th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Jack,
John McCain has Hillary Clinton as VP. They both running against Obama. Just take look at their attacks! They are using the same Bush's playbook.

Chantilly, Virginia

Terry from North Carolina   March 5th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

Jack
John McCain should be looking for a younger running mate with a strong back ground in economics and domestic policy.

James in Kamiah   March 5th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

With those long black, leathery welders gloves. Anything else and the conservative fire and brimstone will melt his face off like in that Indian Jones movie.

David in Raleigh, NC   March 5th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

John McCain is the Democrats worst nightmare. He attracts the Moderate Democrats and Independents who don't agree with the leftist agenda of the Democrat Base.

The Conservative Republicans will vote for McCain to keep Hillary Clinton or Barack Hussein Obama out of the White House.

McCain should select Rudy Gulliani as his Vice President because Rudy to strengthen the support of Moderate Democrats and Independents.

William Henderson   March 5th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

Johnny Mac running mate? Why Jeb Bush of course! That'll really rankle the Dems. It makes sense cause he'd have Florida in his back pocket.

Michael "C" in Lorton, Virginia   March 5th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

He has several candidates of interest to choose from. He needs to select someone with executive experience outside Washington DC. John McCain and Mitt Romney (the M&M ticket).

James in Kamiah   March 5th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

Don't go into the light John! That's just the devil holding a flashlight!

Oops, too late, after todays meeting with Bush, he already smells like Sulfur.

Larry from Georgetown, Tx   March 5th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Pick me, pick me! I could use a pay raise, a medical and dental plan that you pay for, a retirement that never ends, and a plane to fly on at tax payers expense, and be able to go hunting in Texas or anywhere. It would be a great vacation all of the time.

Jorge from Monterey, California   March 5th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

He is going to pick the guy from Florida or Jeff Bush!!!!!!!!!!!

John in San Diego   March 5th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

McCain needs to select a conservative Veep who will apeal to Bible-belt conservatives (and radical fundamentalist talk show hosts), someone from the eastern US who will balance McCain's Arizona cowboy side, and, finally, he needs to select someone who would be content to be a silent partner to a brashly independent President who will consult with him or her on absolutely nothing.

Mike Smith, New Orleans   March 5th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

John McCain should find a running mate who will appease the right wing neo-conservatives in the GOP. Ideally, his running mate would focus on abortion, flag-burning, prayer in schools, and other non-issues that will satisfy the right wing and it's Pope, Rush Limbaugh.

Sandra   March 5th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

The best option for him is to choose a woman for his running mate. I still can't believe that out of all the republicans that were originally running for President that there wasn't one woman. It's obvious that the republican's are living in the past and think that men run this country. I got news for them...women make up nearly half of the workforce in this country and we have a right to have a woman make the "short list" for a change.

Tom, Avon, Maine, The heart of Democracy   March 5th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

He needs someone better at delivering miracles than Governor Huckabee.

George Bush has gutted America economically, and spiritually. He's put our friends to flight and energized our enemies. Good time for a Messiah, and despite Michelle's disclaimers, that's who the public are looking for.

Bert   March 5th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

He should find someone to help him smooth ruffeled feathers. For me, that would mean someone who could make up for his comment, "Jobs Americans wont do". I took that as a personal insult; I have done everything from washing dishes to digging ditches. Just because these jobs have now been flooded with cheep illegal labor, doesn't mean Americans won't do them, just not for the depressed wages caused by criminal employers using the illegal immigrants.

Oak View, CA

April Love   March 5th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

If McCain becomes President the democrats will probably contest if he is really a "natural born" citizen of the U.S. to void his presidency nomination. He should pick someone who can carry the republican card and who is also young enough.

Ken on the Left Coast   March 5th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

How should John McCain go about selecting his running mate?
Call it a walking mate, McCain is too old to have a running mate. I know, I was his age ten years ago.
Ken

Ron Richmond VA   March 5th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Well, he really doesn't have a chance anyway now that G.W. has endorsed him, coupled with the fact McCain is going to follow the same failed policies dubua has used to wreck this country. But if I was a man dealing with current events, I'd say , pick a woman or a black guy, wouldn't you?

tco in Hanover County, VA   March 5th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

He should pick someone whom he knows, likes, and trusts. Someone who knows the military and war well because McCain supports continuation of Bush's war and Bush's economy. Someone who served in the Bush Administration, but disagreed with W on more than one occasion. Another "yes man" as VP won't cut it. There is only one man to fill the role of VP if McCain wants to win - Colin Powell.

Diane, Barneveld, NY   March 5th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

According to Bush, the VP makes no difference so McCain can pick either Bush or Joe Lieberman by flipping a coin.

Burt   March 5th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Jack,
No matter who Senator McCain picks, he will have hard time getting the Presidency. The problem is Senator McCain's temper and policies.

mikeytherhino   March 5th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

They would have to go with the Most conservative man they could get to, on an idealogical level, balance the ticket, and bring the right wing of the party on board. Tom Coburn would be about as Conservative as you could get. Rudy Giuliani Might be a good fit for McCain. Huckabee.....Maybe, If you want an affable Elmer Fudd Look-alike on the Ticket.

Mike From Staten Island, New York

Bob from Traverse city Michigan   March 5th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Well Jack he would have to start by eliminating all the republicans currently under indictment or investigation for influence peddling, then he would have to eliminate all the republicans who have resigned in disgrace after their sensational sexual hi-jinks exposed their hypocracy. He then would need to eliminate any republicans connected to the disgrace that was the bush administration. He needn't bother to ask the republicans that think Rush Limbaugh is smart and I don't think that cunningham guy that embarrassed him in Ohio would accept the job. He's got his work cut out for him!

Michael Chacos Seattle, WA   March 5th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

Jack: John McCain should pick a running mate that will compliment his team by bringing to the table experience in business and finance.
John will do an effective job with national security. I think Mitt would be an excellent choice for him...besides, he has plenty of moolah and the ability to raise alot more.

Brandon - Wy   March 5th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

He needs to go with someone that helps him where he is weakest, the economy. If he doesn't he could be eaten alive by the democrats on the subject come the general election.

Thomas, Tallahassee FL   March 5th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

Joe Lieberman. Then we could have some real drama.

Russell from Portland, OR   March 5th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

I hear Dick Cheney is still available.

Deborah-Grant, Michigan   March 5th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Put all the names of all the Republican politicians into a hat, shake it, and hope to hell the one he picks has some scruples and morals. I hear Larry Craig is available and he could keep the bathrooms clean too.

Tom, Y-town, OH   March 5th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

He should ask George Bush. Afterall, Bush answered all the questions at the news conference covering this topic, until McCain was able to nudge George aside to give his opinion of how he was going to proceed. I think I saw McCain glance after speaking towards Bush to make sure he had his approval of what was said. I think both had one too many pops during lunch. You can see how it affectted them. It turned McCain into a grinning off to the side wimp as Bush rattled on sounding like Hugo Chavez.....not John Wayne.

James in Cape Coral, FL   March 5th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Jack,
If he decides to go with someone who best represents his values, it would behoove him to ask Bush, since he's never actually been VP. But does it really matter? With millions voting for democrats and thousands voting for republicans he can ask just about anybody he wants and it won't make a difference.

Don Kite, Michigan   March 5th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

Now that Senator McCain has clinched the GOP nomination, he needs to think of who would be the best running mate. Naturally, he shoud select someone who is experienced, trusted, and previously "tested" under fire. If I were Senator McCain, I'd pick former Secretary of State Colin Powell. Powell has both the military background and the foreign policy experience to make a great V.P. Jack, this is a no-brainer!

Harry   March 5th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

As we begin to see the democratic party descend into chaos, He can pcik just about anyone, including Dick Cheney or even you.

Seriously, he has a large number of possible candidates, such as Colin Powell, Condi Rice or Haley Barber to name just a few.

I hope that Sen. McCain consders what is best for OUR country and not necessarily for his party.

I think he should pick a younger candidate in case Alzheimer starts to set in, if he ever gets elected. Of course he has no chance. He reminds me of Bob Dole.
On a serious note, however, I think Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska will be a perfect choice and both of them can woo independents and drive the republican establishment crazy.

DON, TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN   March 5th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

My only comment... BRRR! Your picture of those two men standing side by side, waving, arms around each other – made my blood crawl. McCain is Bush II – no universal health care, no help for people caught up in the mortgage mess, 100 years in Iraq, and bombing Iran as soon as McCain can if elected. Ah, I used to love what this country was!

Ralph from NYC   March 5th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

McCain should choose Romney as his runing mate. Romney has been popular with GOP voters throughout the country . True, Huckabee has been popular such in many states, but his ultra-conservative leanings such as his desire to combine religion and the Constitution may turn many potential GOP voters away. McCain has enough of a burden convincing voters his head is directed to domestic affairs as well as issues abroad.

Mark, Queen Village Philadelphia, PA   March 5th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Micky Rooney or was it Mitt Romney?

Juli in Arkansas   March 5th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Honestly Jack, as long as he keeps rubber-stamping Bush's policies? It won't matter.

Ann, Newton, New Jersey   March 5th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Mitt Romney would be a good choice. He is young, known to the public and would be a good balance for Mc Cain. He is also from the East Coast, another balance.

Aaron B.; Champaign, IL   March 5th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Does anyone find it suspicious that Huckabee dropped out of the race right after he surpassed Romney for 2nd on the delegate count? My theory is that Huckabee is taking precautionary measures in order to secure or at least attempt to be the nominee if G-d forbid McCain developes any sort of serious medical condition within the next 6 months that might cause him to drop out. He is 71. Does anyone know the Republican party rules for selecting a replacement candidate if McCain is forced to drop out?

I think Huckabee should be VP he obviously can hold the south and he is a true conservative which will help McCain with the more conservative voters. And I think Huckabee's plan for the economy and building infrastructure could help in Ohio.

McCain is the only candidate who's VP choice really could gain (or lose) him votes. With his age in mind and historical opponents, McCain needs someone younger but extremely qualified, and if that person is a woman or a minority, it sure wont hurt.

John McCain needs to choose someone else who is believed to be honest. This can be extremely difficult to find in today's politics so GOOD LUCK JOHN!!!
The only suggestion I can come up with is Ron Paul, he appears to have good policy and should be able to pull in the critical independents.

Bill from Wake Forest U   March 5th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

He should be concerned with solidifying his alliance with independents by picking Lieberman. Getting the conservative vote will not be a problem regardless of who the Democrats nominate.

thagoodsport, Sun City Arizona   March 5th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Jack, if I were him I would do what ever George Bush tells him to do. After all he picked Dick Cheney. Everybody else he picked either quit or left town under arrest or indictment with or with out their gay partner.
His Vice President has never been convicted yet.

One of the Bush boys or their sons seem like McCain's kin-folk. Surely the country isn't ready to not have a Clinton or Bush in the White House just yet? After this election, maybe Chelsea and the Bush twins can duke it out next.

DJ   March 5th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

He and Joe Lieberman would make a great team.
And maybe could make a change for the good of the nation.
NOT just ANY CHANGE for the sake of making a change.

Rich   March 5th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Two ideas:

Charlie Christ of Florida would be a good choice and fit McCains style. I hope it isnt him because, as a democrat, if we have to have a Republican Governor in Florida Christ would be my #1 choice.

If McCain really wants to "make it happen" then he should go hard after Colin Powell. If he pulled that off, and the dems continue this riduculous waste of time in the primary (Obama is the candidate of the people–but Hillary will probably get it handed to her at the convention), it might be a landslide.

Greg   March 5th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

It's simple, he should pick someone who is good at gaining the voters he is not. If he has any hope to beat either Obama or Hillary, he needs to ensure that a minimal amount of republicans are voting for the democratic candidate.

Bucks County, PA

Al Hilton Palmdale, California   March 5th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

I think if McCain picked a personable conservative like Mike Huckabee, he would make up some lost ground. He should choose someone to hold the base together with the core issues intact, whether or not McCain agrees with some of them. He should squeak by with a win, but could make it a wider margin by choosing the right VP.

A continued battle between Obama and Clinton is McCain's dream and the candidates are making it come true. Hilliary will stay until the last dog is hung whether it drains the Party's coffers or plays into the GOP strategy. She has been Bill's "Vice" forever, is done with that, and at her age will not concede to be Obama's Vice President. To her the risk is too high that another bright Democratic star may come along in 8 years and knock her off. If Bill has got the "fix" is in with the Super D's she will be the candidate and will lose to McCain. As Vice President with Obama she could built up the credentials she needs to stand on her own. Obama needs to take off the gloves and respond to her negative stuff with her tax returns, White Water, Rose Law firm records, her White House records and the rest. Unless Obama is running for VP....

James in Kamiah   March 5th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

Dear Jack, While I would really appreciate you reading my response to this, I think this last guy Frank has it about right; so, please... read his on air. LOL! :D

John from Chicago   March 5th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Cant John McCain just pick Bush to be the VP..? Didnt they do something like that in Russia..?

Ron   March 5th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

He should choose the very lovely Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska. She has my vote.

RSatina   March 5th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

A McCain-Romney ticket is formidable. McCain being the military guru and the latter being the economic advisor....against a formidable tandem of Clinton-Obama.

Alice Zerr   March 5th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Can a sitting President run for Vice President?

PissedInOhio   March 5th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

It will make no difference Jack... look at the numbers, double the turnout for the Democrats over the Republicans EVERYWHERE... we've all had enough of Bush and Company... John "W" McCain doesn't have a chance... this will be the biggest USA slaughter since the Little Big Horn... But that's okay since John likes war so much he should enjoy playing the Custer role this November!
Thanks,
Terry

Biff Lohman   March 5th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

He should pick Alec Baldwin or Sean Penn. Those guys are really smart!

Baltimore, Maryland   March 5th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

He should ask Cheney.

Bill in New London, CT   March 5th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

I think I'd be easier for him if he knew who he was running against. If its Hillary, the conservatives will be coming out in droves to keep her out of the White House, so he can focus more on picking someone who is young or from a swing state. If it is Obama, it becomes more important for him to sure up conservative support with a conservative VP. Throwing out politics, I think Huckabee deserves the nod. He put up a great fight, was couragous and respectful, and he brings the charisma that John McCain simply has only heard about.

TR   March 5th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

Karl Rove of course.

David in NC   March 5th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

Try Condi Rice! Then the Republicans would have the FIRST BLACK and FIRST WOMAN to hold the office of Vice President.

Jed from Chico, CA   March 5th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

McCain's best bet would be to pick some sort of evil clone of Hillary and/or Obama. Condi Rice looks ideal but I think we've had about as much of her as we can stand. A strong experienced female like Elizabeth Dole or Kay Bailey Hutchison could swing the disenfranchised Clinton voters if Obama becomes the nominee. Colin Powell would also make a strong VP, but I don't think he wants back in the white house. McCain could also go with a 'Dan Quayle' young buck type. I know it sounds ridiculous but it didn't stop the President's father from getting elected. The best candidate would then become John E. Sununu, the 43-year-old Catholic from New Hampshire.

Shawn   March 5th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

How about someone very independent may be?
Like !!! “Oh Yea” Joe Lieberman.

Jerry   March 5th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

Jack there is only one choice for V.P. It has to be Huckleberry. We need the religious right to tell us wich religion to have, and make sure his god is the right one.

Jim Lacey   March 5th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

With a great deal more caution than identifying with a standing president who today said, "Change? I ran on a platform of change in 2002...and reversed myself in 2004. That's something all candidates say who are running for office."

I hope during the Clinton/McCain debates, Wolfe Blitzer will bring up that comment to McCain and ask him where he stands on that advise......

Dick Cheney can probably introduce McCain to a friend in the oil or weapons business. Since McCain is planinng for a hundred years war, he may as well choose someone with experience to continue nurturing Cheney's colonial empire.

Michael   March 5th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

If its not one of the Bush boys it'll be Condi Rice that way the African Americans and woman will vote for McCain, god help America if he wins!

Brian (in PA)   March 5th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

I'm sure if Dick Cheney was allowed the influence he had with G.W., he could be persuaded to enrich himself and his cronies for at least another 4-8 years.

Mark, Chicago, IL   March 5th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Ha! I really like the idea of Joe Lieberman as McCain's VP! Send this campaign season into chaotic overdrive!!!

Mischelle from Illinois   March 5th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

What? Not Arnold? McCain has time to take advantage of....and he should. But I doubt it will be another BUSH (Jeb, your a great guy and all, but it's your name....)

linda   March 5th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

I think mcain should chose someone who could run with him so he could clinch him then there would be none of those idiots anymore!! another bush wannabe makes me sick to me stomach.come on Americans!!do better than this.

Joe -Iowa   March 5th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Jack, how about A democrat for a sign he can reach across the isle?
He could then put on a blind fold and play "pin the tail on the donkey"

Rich McKinney,Texas   March 5th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

John McCain needs to chose a woman or black politician to be his VP. Preferably a black woman. That would take any wind out of the democrats sails and any bashing they might attempt will be thwarted instantly or they will face certain peril at the voters hands. The United states has moved forward far enough and the time has come to have more diverse governmental leaders in this country. The ball is in your court McCain. Lead by example or move out of the way.

That's easy...use the same method Donald Trump uses to select a partner. He should divide his own age by two and subtract seven.

Sharon Brown   March 5th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

He should pick Mike Huckabee. He can pull in the South and the right.

Todd   March 5th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

McCain needs to select someone with the ability to rally the Republican Party votes since he isn't very strong with the Conservatives. He also needs to be weary of the buzz that Obama and Clinton have created among the Democrats. Does the Republican Party have someone that can help him do both? If they do, he or she needs to raise their hand because I haven't seen them.

as long as it is not jeb bush he gives americans a bad name and she be required to leave the country along with obama

Gena   March 5th, 2008 4:54 pm ET

I agree with Don Kite – Colin Powell. He's well respected and I like the fact that he got out of politics. Someone who saw the system going badly and chose not to get dragged into it has my respect. Plus, this drops the race card issue if Obama should win. Could Colin lead if McCain should pass away? I think he could.

The alternative would be Huckabee. But, for the heck of it, how about Limbaugh or Coulter? It's great to be in a position to criticize constantly, but have they ever served in office? Put your money where your mouth is – if you think you can be better than anyone else running the country, give it a shot....and good luck.

Lance   March 5th, 2008 4:54 pm ET

Jack,
Mr. McCain should select his running mate by having someone who has what he lacks. Like for instance, someone who know's we are in a recession and know's how to stimulate the economy with an economic background, someone who is not mean spirited, and someone who does not have as many friends "my friends" as McCain does, so he doesn't have to worry about special interest politics while doing the job in f America's number one executive position.

ERIC   March 5th, 2008 4:55 pm ET

I think McCain should pick Jeb Bush. Since America is so obsess with the Clintons and the Bushes. McCain is going to be fine with picking a candidate. there is a huge elephant in the room that no one is talking about. Uneducated people are easily influence by non sense. why can't the Clintons move educated Americans to their side. How many people in Ohio simple will not vote for a black man. lets be real about this. how many Hispanics in Texas will not for a black man. so i think we should not pay any attention to Ohio. This is exactly what our country fathers were afraid of when they created this country. an uneducated electorate.

papaharpman   March 5th, 2008 4:55 pm ET

McCain needs David Cunningham. It will be a dream, ... er, nightmare dream team. The Repubs deserve them.

Velle In Halifax   March 5th, 2008 4:58 pm ET

McCain should pick a VP young enough to wake him when the Nation nees a President. He slept through his obligations on the oversight of Savings and Loans and look what happened! It would also help if his VP had considerable understanding of economics. At $1.43 million per day per person, he doen's seem to understand that most Americans can't sustain his war. It may be prudent to remember that we destroyed the Soviet Union by getting them to spend themselves to death. Ben-Laden, Chavez and others have taken a page from our own playbook and Bonehead Bush and his ilk seem only too anxious to oblige them!

Bud Curtis   March 5th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

Jack,

Since we now know that black-americans do not decide who to vote for based on race (instead, on programs and ideas), I do not suppose it would make sense to choose Condi or Colan. Otherwise, either one of them would make a lot of sense to me.

Anna, SW Missouri   March 5th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

It really doesn't matter who he picks because Hillary has decided that if she can't win the nomination for the Democrats she is going to make damn sure that Obama can not win the White House. Maybe she is running for the VP of the Republican Partly.

Diane Stahl   March 5th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

John McCain should pick a loyal Republican who is ready to be President on day one. Whether the candidate is a conservative, a woman, an African American, or the governor of a battleground state is of no real significance. Mr. McCain is 71 years old and in seemingly good health but the American people need to know that his second in command can step in at a moment's notice and run the country.

joe m   March 5th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

mccain needs to do the opposite of what bush had to do. he needs a younger vp with good economic credentials and is one who is not a bigger name than him. mccain is the war hero who is known for having a mind of his own. his VP needs to be someone this generation can identify with.

good this for him is he has choices.

Amy in Iowa   March 5th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

Since they are such good friends, maybe McCain should consider Hillary Clinton. Hillary has been such a great help to the Republicans in the primary election as demonstrated by her Obama bashing. Her efforts should be rewarded by officially being on the ticket with the party.

Bruce St Paul MN   March 5th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

McCain needs to use his choice to deal with his charisma deficit. Maybe someone with hair. Bush needed Cheney because he lacked experience. Clinton I needed Gore because he was all about the future. McCain needs someone who is exciting, younger, credible. Regional candidates have not really been helpful in the last few elections. (Edwards, Dole). If he chooses a far right idealogue, he's going to regret it.

Terry M ( maine )   March 5th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

Look very closely at the picture ahnd Mccain

he doesnt wear a lapel pin. did not wear one ate the white house or last night when accepting the nomination.

How can he be commander-in-chief and a loyal patriotic american

Wes   March 5th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

He should pick Condi Rice. He will please the conservative base, attract some independants, and will chip away supporters from the likely Clinton-Obama ticket. Wow 3 in 1!

peter   March 5th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

Maybe Hillary, she will be ready day one

James Mo   March 5th, 2008 5:05 pm ET

Has anyone said how old John McCain's father was when he passed on? Men usually follow the male genes in longevity. Obviously he needs to pick someone that will be young enough to hold office for about 8 to 16 years. Hillary has decided to destroy the Democratic Party, and it will take that long before it even begins to show life again after she is done with it.

I suggest John McCain spit in the wind and see who it hits or throw darts at all the photos of the long list. He's not going to win anyway so who the hell cares who he pick.

KP   March 5th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

why doesn't he just pick the current occupant of the white house for his running mate since a vote for McCain means a continuation of blunders of the bush adminstration!

Lauren   March 5th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

McCain's ultimate choice for running mate will be of much significance in this election given the ongoing, divisive talk of his conservative values. Ideally, he should consider someone that would heal the broken ties between him and the ultra-conservatives. And perhaps someone of a younger age would add some zest to the Republican ticket, because if you ask me, this country is ready for some young blood in Washington that would rid this nation of a fruitless foreign policy. However, hopefully those who truly want such changes will choose the opponent of McCain and his potential spring chicken of a running mate.

LC MN   March 5th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

They should choose Jack. Unfortunately, Jack would add far too much intelligence to the team and that would not be an acceptable quality for any RNC administration.
