I think they should look and see who has the most primary victories. Right now, that is Barack Obama; and based on polling it would appear that that will be the case at the end of the primary season. The fact is, either Barack or Hillary will be able to carry the coastal states during the general election, but many people see Obama as the one who can galvanize the youth and the African-American vote best in November, giving the Dems a better chance of winning some typically Red states.

You make an excellent point and as a loyal democrat that is my biggest fear. The lack of unity in the democratic party will put another republican in the white house. Clinton & Obama must unite, whether it’s on a same ticket (per your blog from yesterday) or in other capacities. They need to put the ego’s aside, and those of their spouses, and unite the country. The party needs to make a decision well ahead of the convention. It will be too late then.

Hillary & Obama should decide on there own whats best for this country the both of them would make excellent Vice Presidents or Presidents. This will be a tough battle but whoever comes out of this, they both should keep each other in mind. Because they will need all the power they can get to beat Mccain if he becomes the republican nominee.

They should penalize Hillary Clinton for keeping her name on the Michigan ballot and for campaigning in Florida against what the DNC had asked and she had agreeded to do, and give those delegates to Barack Obama. They should line up the superdelegates behind Barack Obama and keep Clinton as far from the White House as they can to insure a democratic administration in ‘08. Hilary on the ticket will guarantee a republican victory in November. Myself and many other democratic white women over 55 will vote for McCain over Hillary if it came to that. Also, many of my republican friends have told me they will vote for Obama over McCain in November if they have that choice. If the DNC wants to win the White House we need Obama on the ticket. Hopefully women will wake up and stop voting gender bias, Latinos will realize that when Obama speaks of uniting and caring about all people that includes them, and the low income familes will realize that when Hillary talks about universal health care it will cost them forcefully from their paychecks if needed to fulfill her agenda and she isn’t going to pay their mortgage payments for them. If that happens he will win overwhelmingly in the upcoming primaries and the DNC’s intervention will be a non-issue.

Don’t worry they (the party leaders) will dictate a nomination of the two to run. Too much of an opportunity to have power over the executive branch and the legislative branch to let it go.

From my understanding, most of Obama’s votes are coming from new voters and Independents. Hillary has been in the establishment for a long time and it would not be fair, but they should nominate Obama. If the establishment chooses Hillary, I see where a bunch of the mostly moderate “New Democrats” could feel cheated and would have no problem voting for a candidate like McCain. Worse still if the Republicans woo these new disenfranchised voters, the Democrats will be facing an uphill battle for years to come.

They should let the people decide. You can’t include the results from Michigan or Florida, since an agreement had been reached to strip them of the delegates. I don’t care what one of the candidates says, there was time to fall inline with their party rules and to have the primaries actually count.

That said, once the candidates make it to the convention, I say nominate the candidate that has the most ACTUAL delegates. No one wants this nomination decided by superdelegates.

Let the citizens of the United States who voted decide.

If neither candidate has the necessary majority to win the nomination outright prior to the convention then I propose that no ’super-delegate’ votes be counted.

The candidate with the most votes should be the nominee with an accomodation for the runner-up as either VP or influence on the ticket.

The Democrats should pick the only candidate that can take the White House, Obama. In the past the decision of which way to vote has been to pick the least dispicable person. Between McCain and Hillary it’s lose-lose.

They should have a brokered convention. How exciting for all of you in the media! Isn’t this what you have wanted from the beginning? We all know these elections are not about the voters.
The media and the party bosses have been determining the nominee for years. Let’s be honest about it. Do we want the secretive and manipulative media brokering or the fight it out convention brokering?
Keep this in mind, when Abe Lincoln went to the Republican Convention, he was not truly thinking he would be running for President, yet, he walked out with the nomination. If Edwards shows up to the convention, anything could happen.

Jack, the choice of a Presidential candidate will be brokered before or at the Democratic convention, and should depend on which individual the party believes will be most able to capture the White House. I would want to see Edwards run for President with Clinton as his running mate.

Whoever has the most delegates after Pennsylvania should be the nominee. But if it’s not Hillary you can bet she won’t bow out gracefully. With her ambition, she’ll rip the Democratic Party apart before she quits. And if she wins the nomination, John McCain will be the next President of the United States.

Maybe I’m a simpleton, but if neither candiate has the majority of delegates to win the nomination and to prevent mayhem if the super delegates end up nominating either Obama or Clinton, just count up all of the popular vote each candiate accured during the primary season, less Florida and Michigan. The one who has the most popular votes is the nominee. That way the voters actually chose the candidate and their vote actually counted. What a concept!

I don’t want to see a brokered convention. I also don’t want to see an ugly fight over those Michigan and Florida delegates. Those states knew the rules when they decided to move their primaries ahead of Super Tuesday. I think, as people get to spend more time getting to know Barack Obama, he will continue to gain support. In a perfect world, Hillary, who is too much a Washington insider, will bow out gracefully and throw her support to Obama. He has the momentum and he is attracting hordes of new people to the Democratic party.

These delegates are nothing more than a bunch of name dropping, coattail riding bunch of idiots. The Voters in each state with given pledged delegates need to decide who gets the Democratic nomination not some group of super delegates or states that moved up their Primary. I am an Independent voter who plans to vote Democratic in this election mostly because I am impressed with Barack Obama’s position on the Issues. Jack, I think you’ve said it already, Howard Dean has to get Hillary and Barack to come to an arrangement that would resolve the battle no later than March/April. In an ideal world we would let the fight continue and determine the winner at the convention but that too brings its’ own set of perils — the “super delegates” and the back room politics — so the best case scenario for both candidates, the Democratic Party and the Country, would be for Hillary and Barack to come to an agreement on who the Democratic Nominee will be if the voters can’t by April.

That’s a good question, I don’t believe the American people will feel their vote counted if this is decided by the super delegates. Maybe the total needs to be less, or high delegate count gets it. The larger delegate states do not represent the will of the rest of the country and should not be the be-all end all. Perhaps the whole system as well as electoral college votes in the main election needs to be revamped. Just counting the votes cast by Americans should decide who wins should decide. Why did we go out and vote if it doesnot decide the winner.

Since delegates are only tied to a candidate for one vote, they could then vote for whomever they wish. We could actually come out with either Al Gore or John Edwards (or both) as our nominee. Now that would be a dream team to me! Since both were “swift boated” in 2000 and 2004, that would be poetic justice.

I never consider Gore during the primaries,but if neither has enough delegates the right thing to do is go with Gore and Obama as his vice president. There is one way out of all this mess that all reasonable people see. The DNC sees it as well. The questions we Democrats are asking ourselves now is whether or not the DNC is as corrupt and selfish as the Clintons are. How many more elections will they allow the Clintons to ruin for us? The Democratic system should operate as a winner take all (delegates) like the Republican system. The Dem party could still have superdelegates, however, who could vote as they please. If that were the case, Hillary would have been the decided nominee after Super Tuesday or at least have such a margin of spread that Obama would be flailing in the background muck like Romney and Huckabee are on the Rep side. Also, FL and MI delegates should be seated! This IS a democracy after all and their voters should have a say in the primaries just as they do in the general election. The answer is simple…The DNC Should get on their hands and knees and beg John Edwards to be the Nominee, since he is the only Democrat that can actually win in the General Election. That would involve admitting they was wrong as we know Democrats, other than John Edwards, has a problem with admitting they are wrong. Edwards walking out with the nomination would be historic…don’t you think?

But Jack, who gets to decide? I don’t know which Democrats would be in a position to get The Party to do anything. Dean? I don’t think so, though I delight in the irony of his position in this mess. The majority of party hacks are likely Hillary supporters, and if they come up with a plan perceived as favoring her, the Democrats will be just as bitterly divided as if there’d been a brokered convention.

Maybe the better question is, ‘Which candidate would be more able to heal the damage this race does to the party?’

During the convention, in one of those smoke-filled rooms, they should duke it out in an oil wrestling match. Put it all on Pay-per-view and donate all the proceeds of the event to the national deficit…It will at least keep the Plebians entertained and maybe help rebuild the crumbling empire.

Then we can all say it in unison: “It’s getting ugly out there.”

The superdelegates will need to figure out who’s likely to win more electoral points in the presidential race.

Most of Obama’s wins have been in red states, which makes him very riskey for November. Clinton won blue states comfortably. She also did great in swing states like Florida, even better than the republican winner, making her a safe bet for the White House.

It is very likely that the race will get very ugly but I think Senator Clinton will prevail.

Well, it may look like both Senators Clinton and Obama will not have sufficient delegates to be nominated by the Democratic convention… sure they could make “peace” and decide that one of them be nominated as President and the other will take the vice-presidency… that could be a possibility… but I also think that whoever decided not to allow Florida and Michigan to get delegates screwed up! If I were in one of these two states and voted Democrat, I would be peeved that no delegates would represent my vote at the Convention… and I probably would not even vote on Election Day!
Then this thing about delegates voting to find the one who will represent the party for the Presidency is stupid! I think that the election for the Presidency of the United States should not be in the hand of delegates and the so-called Electoral College, a President should be elected according to popular votes, period! But since this may not be done, at least this year, well, how about bringing Mr. Edwards back and have him run for President of the U.S.? I am sure he would be a good opponent to Senator McCain! He would win! He is for the people!

Obama needs to get John Edwards, Bill Richardson and Al Gore on-board. Obama’s views and ability to bring people together would best accomplish the goals of all three.

Obama should offer them key positions in his administration that would best suit their missions, goals and expertise. Doing so will help unite the party and focus on winning the White House.

Yes, it could and it probably will. They stoop to low levels to get the other’s supporters votes. They will anything and everything to become a winner. I am no psychic, but I believe that this race will get ugly. The “friendship” before and after the election is out the window!

It is important that the Democrats don’t damage each other to get the nomination. Lets hope the DNC has the good sense to deny the Republicans who by nature are dirty campaigners any ammunition. It really doesn’t matter who is the Democrat nominee, the issue is that this country desperately needs a Democratic president for the next 8 or 16 years to correct this wrong path that our country is on.

Include all votes from every state that has voted including Michigan and Florida and see what the popular vote is after Pennsylvania. The person with the higher popular vote gets the nomination and the other is given the VP spot.
If they truly care about the people, ALL of those who have voted and want to unite the party this seems like a good solution to me.

Novel idea…Let’s have a convention. I mean a real convention where people speak on behalf of the candidates, make deals, hammer out platforms, get down to the nitty gritty of politics. Let’s hear from party leaders and the candidates themselves as they try to pursade the delegates. Maybe the networks would actually cover more of it than just the acceptance speech. Maybe we would all learn a little more about how our democracy works…or how it should work. I look forward to it.

If the Dems play it right, this could get them the White house for sixteen years. Instead of bickering, they should keep it clean so that both sets of supporters will vote for a ticket with both of them. Super Tuesday showed that more people voted in the Democrat Primary than in the Republican Primary, so all they need to do is not alienate those voters and a combined ticket should sail into office.

All candidates and all political offices should be elected by popular vote. I know politicians would be lost without making things so complicated that even they don’t understand them but delegates, super-delegates and the electoral college are relics from the nineteenth century and should have been phased out long ago. Let the government be of the people, for the people and by the people and let the people make the decisions.

I believe that they are both going to end up on the same ticket. If not, we may be facing another 4 to 8 years of hell like we have endured during the Bush administration.

The best we can hope for is that Obama wins the rest of the states by huge margins, so Michigan and Florida delegates can be seated withhout changing the outcome.
We need the voters from both states to be involved in the political process and not turned off.

Ask obama to drop out and let a “qualified candidate” Hillary Clinton have the nomination. She is the only one that can beat the republicans. She has been baptized by fire already, they will crucify obama if he is the candidate.

Clearly Obama and Hillary should not get in a fight,but, instead go on stumping and let the American public select the one who will lead,,, do not do what the Republican party hopes for and destroy each other for them,, but hug, and speak respectfully of each other and then join togeather at the end to become the republicans worse nightmare, a team that will cruise into the whitehouse and then rebuild America,, best of wishes to them both,, let God decide!!!

They have to nominate one and they best wa to do so is to do it the democratic way. Have an open vote and majority wins.

I think the rules have been changed enough to accomodate Obama. Clinton was told to use kid gloves with him and I think that is rediculous. I haven’t seen a decent debate yet. In my 52yrs. I have never seen such nonsense. Politics is a rough business. If Obama can’t stand or stand up to the heat then he needs to excuse himself because there are actually alot of very difficult and unpleasant things a President has to do and endure. The Republicans sure aren’t going to “make allowances for him” or play nice. I don’t think the rules should change just because of Obama. Clinton should continue to go full speed ahead…if she is allowed that is. The rules should remain as they were set up.

The DNC has no right to take away the vote of any American, that includes Michigan and Florida . Every American who cast a vote should have their vote counted.

nothing. especially if it involves these super delegates. in the end if neither reach that magic number let the one with more ACTUAL won delgates declare victory. if they tie let a good old fashion coin toss decide the tie. a coin does not have an agenda and won’t expect anything for its support; i know i can’t say this for these super delegates. the super delegates are a poison pill to this democratic nomination.

If Obama or Clinton fails then that would prove how divided the democratic party really is. If democrats can’t win this election then the only hope for america is to have a GOP candidate that can truly unite the parties, but seeing how thats not likely to happen anytime soon our best bet is to buckle up and all go independent. This goes to show why a two party system is just not working.

Could it get any worse than it was a couple of weeks ago? I think it has to get better if we expect to take the White House back. And looking at who we most likely will be up against, McCain, we need to get serious. He won’t even vote for his own constituents. What good will he really be? More war and less money for home.

I’m positive the Democrats will some how foul this up if this. It is quite apparent that the Democratic Party has no problem alienating its voters. Just look at Florida.

Yes Jack,it will get ugly. Ted Kennedy and Bill Clinton will be politicking in that smoke filled room. Deals will be made and the American people will have to vote for the people these power brokers select. Hopefully they will implement a strategy that will knock the Republicans out of the White House for the next sixteen years. It will take that long to clean up the mess they have created in the past eight years!

If neither candidate gets enough delegates to win the nomination something went terribly wrong somewhere. Of course there are a lot of delegates which may not have a vote - how could I forget? Well, Jack, if something goes terribly wrong within the
Democratic Party - imagine that if you will! - I think we should draft the old work-horse Al Gore, saddle him up, and ride him all the way to the much deserved ouster of that Bush gang. Just who is to be the jockey is another problem. Perhaps you - or Lou Dobbs.

Jack, If the Super delegates are left with picking the candidate, and they do something stupid like trying to override the popular vote, then faster than Howard Dean can yell on stage, they are going to seriously upset those voters who will end up feeling like their vote never counted in the first place, and that what they think is less important than what some big headed, big mouthed Super Delegate like Bill Clinton thinks, and then the odds will be against a Democrat making it into the Whitehouse, because those voters who were cast aside wont even bother showing up to vote in November. If that happens, you and Wolf Blitzer call in sick on Election Day and meet me in Las Vegas, where we’ll win big betting on a Republican to be the next President.

I don’t understand why the media is all in an uproar if there is not a clear front runner by the convention. What in goodness name is the purpose of the convention…to nominate a candidate right?

Change the DNC rules: Let the popular vote decide, and ignore the superdelegates.

Jack, I heard Donna Brazile say yesterday that she would quit the democratic party if the nomination came down to super delegates, and as you know, she IS a super delegate and knew the rules, unlike most of the rest of us. The time to change the rules is not when you have to actually use them. I think going forward we should do away with super delegates and caucases because both are open to manipulation. Whoever wins the popular vote in this primary season should be the nominee and the other should be their running mate because we democrats are too fired up to lose either of these fine candidates.

Obama should step down and support Hillary. She has won the bigger states, (including Florida and Michigan) she has more Super Delegates and she has the experience to do the best job on day one. Obama can take over from her when the time comes. Obama’s popularity will not stand up to the Republican assaults. It’s time to face the reality, people.

The delegates are inept and can’t see as far as their nose. As a independant voter, I can see that Obama can win the White House. If it’s given to Hilliary, all of the youth vote that Obama brought out will feel disenfranchised and especially the white voters will not vote for Hillirary and the rest will hand the Republican party the White House on a silver platter. The democrats will suffer the most crushing defeat of a life time and my never see the inside of the oval office for more than 20 years. The Obama people will not stand for getting disrepected by the old party bosses that are out of step with society. Obama has to be the one in order to win. If you really want to win, give it to Obama.

The race could get really ugly. Hillary, as shown in the past gets desperate and then goes to any measure to win. Crying in past has been her strong suit, as well as change her stance on policies. Who knows how low she is willing to stoop for what she wants? I fear for Obama.

Here is a novel idea……How about letting the people decide who they want to be the leader of The United States of america. Call me crazy, but I think it just might work. You know, us American people are not a bunch of idiots, we are capable of making decisions for ourselves.

I believe that Obama should be made the democratic canididate and Hillary can be the VP. As he has said, he can get all of the votes that Hillary is getting. I think that most of the Democrats want to see change and Barack is that change. With Barack at the helm, and Hillary as his running mate, the republicans have no chance.

we do not want a brokered convention to further divide the democratic party. the republicans will destroy obama if he is the nominee. too liberal and inexperienced. yes he is inspiring and gives a great speech, but no substance and no real command of the issues. i really don’t see someone voting for mccain to simply vote against hillary. if you want peace a vote for mccain would not get that done. we do not need another inexperienced president that learns on the job. look where it got us last time. the clinton/obama ticket would be the way to go. obama can then get the experience he needs. can you imagine 16 years with the democrats in control? maybe we could finally get this country back on track.
