Right or wrong she said it. Does it matter? No. Some think that McCain's mom has more support with her walker then McCain has with the Republican party but maybe there is reason for that. McCain doesn't want immigration reform without granting immunity to those already illegally here. That is not the Republican message. The illegal immigration problem is a big part of what is wrong with the economy now, Republicans are realizing that. They also realize now that sending our jobs out of the country is not a good thing. When the jobs go our money goes and our economy slows. McCain won't be president for just those reasons.

I should think a mother would have more faith in her son than that. Not only does he have support from Republicans, but a fair number of misguided Dumbocrats support him too. He has taken a lot from Republicans and they owe him big time. But if by “base” you mean the radical religious right wing-nuts, yes they are really base and they’ve done too much damage to the Republican party as it is – not to mention the country. If I needed them to win an election, at least I’d have enough self-respect not to run.

McCain's support comes from Independents and Moderates in the Republican Party.

The core conservative base of the Republican party views McCain as liberal because he's negotiated several compromises between the Democrats and Republicans. The conservative Republicans believe that he has sold them out when he's negotiated these compromises with the Democrats.

McCain is what this country needs. A moderate who can govern in the middle and remove partisan politics from American Government.

When Mrs. McCain was asked about her son's support among the "base" of the GOP, she responded as if she was asked about the "establishment" of the GOP. There's a difference. Much of the grass roots conservative base is proud to support John McCain for President - myself included. The more partisan establishment leaders, on the other hand, have regarded Senator McCain as too independent and a wildcard when it comes to marching in lockstep with the official Republican Party talking points.

Why do we have to deal with people beyond any reasonable retirement age. Would you want McCain flying jet bomber then why would we want him running our country. Does America have a death wish. Yes, but she is as confused as her son about who makes up the base. Although the God-squad crowd has been anointed “the base” by media, most republicans, the Reagan republicans, view them as marginal voters and they are not the majority base. Having said that, she was right, the “real” base does not support him.

I supported McCain in 2000; however, I strongly disagree with him over the necessity of the Iraq war. But if Rush Limbaugh, Tom Delay, and Rick Santorum or against him, I may give him a second look.

From the war in Iraq to amnesty for people in this country illegally and a whole list of other things that have systematically brought this country to it's knees in an act of begging others for help. She is right with respect to those in the party who aren't happy with him for failing to support the Bush tax cuts, and for his bi-partisan approach. Just by watching some of the other networks with conservative hosts, you can tell they are all starting to push Romney (or at least the current version of the day, economic expert agent of change Romney - the man who will bring auto jobs back to Michigan).

As a Vietnam veteran , I admire his courage and conviction . Terms like conservative , moderate ,liberal do not mean anything to me . What is more important is the issues and a candidates solution to those issues . The problem with Congress is that they are to polarized-what we need is a candidate that can overcome this polarization . Whatever happened to working for the common good to resolve problems . McCain's history is working with both sides of the aisle to get things done no matter their label. As a registered independent in a pro democratic state – he has my vote --unless Lou Dobbs decides to run.

He basked in the Pat Tillman funeral and then when we found out the Pentagon was lying he should have rode into town with a vengeance and taken out all the liars. I can not understand why the GOP is not behind him. He is a great guy, a real honest man, even though I am a Democrat and will not vote for him.
He has been a bigger man than most, just being in the same room as Bush, much less forgiving him for the Racist and Slanderous treatment Karl Rove dished out against him.
He has worked for the GOP agenda, and been a loyal guy. Because he doesn't wear a big sign saying "I love Jesus" on his back is no reason not to vote for him.

I think that McCain has some bumps in the road with conservatives, but I think that in this election year, seeing that McCain is leading Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in the national polls, should be a wake-up call to conservatives. Rush Limbaugh should take a cue from this. Romney is getting absolutely crushed against Clinton and McCain, and he's supposed to be our "best candidate?" If he is supposed to represent the party's platforms then I think that it shows the American people are done with republicans. The party won't fall apart, according to Mr. Limbaugh, but it will be reformed. I think this is salubrious to the party, and I think that John McCain will be the republican nominee for president.

He lacks support from the Republican party now, but you better believe those same people will be standing in line to ride his tailcoat if he comes out as the front-runner. I think his mom is right. I know so MANY Democrats and Independents who will vote for McCain if Hillary is the Democratic nominee. On the other hand, if Obama is the nominee, they say they would vote for Obama over McCain.

Mother McCain is right on the money. Not only about the Republican base disliking McCain, but also about him being a staunch backer of President Bush. Unfortunately, Mom is cutting John off at the legs. Hanging that support of Bush around his neck is going to destroy him in a general election.

I do not think that the traditional Reagan Republican base is behind McCain. The Republican party right now is actually having a fight for the soul of it. It is sort of like when Bill Clinton ran as a new Democrat. Now the Republican party has "New Republicans" that are battling with traditional Republicans. for the future of the party. My wife and I have been lifelong conservatives and have voted for the GOP in every election since we turned 18 in 1992 and we both believe that the way that so-called conservative pundits have treated Senator McCain is nothing short of scandalous. It seems like they just can't accept a genuine American hero who doesn't conform to their own dogmatic views of what a Republican must be. I think Sen. McCain's mother has a valid point, but I think she touches on a bigger issue, which is the fact that he is the only presidential candidate, to my knowledge, who has managed to transcend the partisan quibbling that nearly every other politician in our government has made their modus operandii. A large part of our country's decline as a whole has been the politicians' kowtowing to special interest groups – the minority opinions – in a political system in which, by definition, the majority rules. Sen. McCain has proven time and time again that the problems that need solving are more important than a small group of whiny people. To quote Spock, "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few". Sen. McCain, you may not have the republican base's support, but you have this republican's support.

Mama McCain is right, but what she's missing is the Republican Party never supported McCain. They "black" balled him in 2000 regarding his "illegitimate black daughter, and he was a fool to continue supporting Bush after that. I don't respect or trust him because of his return to the flock.

She is quite amazing for her age and she really could wash out McCain's cridits mouths like he suggested. Also however she is half right that the party isn't giving him enough support when he clearly has enough support from independents to win the election. If the GOP doesn't indorse him they will lose the presidency even if Hilary and Obama destroy each other.

They not be lining up behind the Mac Attack now, but when he gets the nomination (and he will) watch the mad rush to be the first to say "I was behind him all the time !"

I don't know how McCain could receive any support from anyone, especially the Republicans. I mean our nation is on the verge of a financial meltdown, and yet when Dr. Paul asked him an economic-based question he couldn't even answer it. He doesn't know squat about fixing the economy. His only "show pony" is the war in Iraq. However, many disagree with him on that issue. I mean he claims to be able to fix our economy, yet he wants to spend billions of dollars every year in the Middle East.

Also, he and Teddy Kennedy's Immigration Reform essentially comes down to giving illegal immigrants amnesty, which I don't know ANY Republicans who agree with that. I think he is doing alright for the time being because the media is framing the GOP race around him. I don't like him, I don't trust him, and I think if he's elected we are going to have another four years of having the country ran in a Bush-esque manner.

Is McCain not getting any support from the Republican base? What Republican base, the Republican party is a loose agreement from several establishments who share similar ideals/agendas. There are the evangelicals, the NRA, the anti-abortioners, the far Right conservatives, the fiscal concervatives/socialy liberal, some Right leaning libertarians etc. etc. McCain is loosing some far Right portions of these groups, while gaining support from other establishments. Its the nature of politics, the question is, can McCain gain more while alienating some? Its a gamble we are certainly going to watch play out.

McCain's mom may be right – but I think the biggest reason he is not getting support from the party (and a lot of Republicans and independents) is because, as she said, he supported Bush and helped him get elected. And then for the most part John supported Bush. That has cost him and WILL cost him the election. John knows now that he made a big mistake in supporting possibly the worst president in history. It's true. John McCain is willing to concede that tax cuts are not always the best idea, and so demonstrates that he has a grasp on reality. The rest of the Republicans are fanatical about cutting taxes, regardless of what is happening. They're bad for the economy–Hoover gave us the Great Depression, Bush the First gave us a recession, and now his son has given us another one.

It is true to the extent that McCain has very little support in the Republican party. Many blame him for leaning towards some liberal views that could rip the party apart if he is nominated. Him being endorsed by the New York Times and Sen. Joe Lieberman are not helping him one bit. Is Sen. John McCain a conservative republican? I don't think so.

Instead let's vote for a Republican who can think for himself ...like McCain...my god we might actually win the White House again and have a President we can be proud of for once in the last 16 years.

McCain's main problem is that he is first an American and second a Republican, something that people who have never served the country cannot comprehend. Some people think that their party is the end-all when in fact it is just that, a political party...those are the "base" Republicans who do not like McCain. Most of the rest of us Republicans, as well as Independents and Democrats, like a person who has walked the walk, not someone who just talks the talk. Because of that I know that Senator McCain will be the best choice for the Republican Party and for the country as the next President of the U.S.

I don't think she's entirely correct. He doesn't have the full support of the more conservative Republicans, but those who lean towards a more liberal mindset support him. I don't disagree with everything he says, but I disagree with enough issues that I think are important that I prefer a different candidate. For example, he voted against Bushes tax cuts, but now they should be permanent?? A bit of a flip flop. He wanted amnesty for all the millions of illegal immigrants!! Absolutely not!! IF he becomes the Republican nominee I will vote for him. No matter what you think of him, in my opinion he far surpasses the probable Democratic nominee...... No wait, let her get elected, fall flat on her face, become useless and all the democratic seats in Senate and House get replaced by Republicans. What a good thing!!!

The Republican Base is not running for president, John McCain is. Therefore, they don't matter and he does, essentially. Endorsements can only get you so far. If they were really as miraculously boosting as they are said to be, Obama would've won from Oprah's endorsement alone. Do you know many people flip from the State of The Union Address to Oprah? Probably a lot.

Roberta McCain could teach all these young whipper-snappers a few things. She knows what it is like to have her boy captured and "not knowing" for five years. She speaks the truth. Just what America needs now. Perhaps she should be drafted as VP candidate for either party.

He has support. I just wish he wasn't so pro-war

I am disapointed in the republican party for not embracing his straight forward approch to problems that our country faces now and in the future. I beleive that he can defeat the double talk and mullarky that the clintons spill into the air waves. they do this thinking that the electorate is too naieve to see through there facade. He has proven to the nation with his record of service that he can make the hard decisions even if they are unpopular .

His mom is right. They're going to have to accept him while pinching their noses because he's apparently the Republican that comes the closest to any of the potential Democratic nominees in a general election. But John McCain has himself to blame because he can't make up his mind which group to sleep with and when. The Democrats may have exactly the same problem. They need to be focussed on who is best suited to defeat ANY Republican by the biggest margin. There can be no chances taken in defeating this Republican regime. And I wonder how McCain's mom feels about an extended war with more middle east nations i.e. Iran, Syria, Yemen, etc. because with John McCain, there's no war-mongering limits.

Honesty appears to run in that family as strongly as their service to our nation. I have had the chance to meet Roberta McCain, who when I approached to hold an umbrella over her, kindly refused and walked the 50 yards from the bus in the rain. I'd take her against Chuck Norris and Stallone.

I think McCain enjoys support from a wide array of both Republican and Democratic moderates, but those aren't the voters he needs to court for this primary. I think despite what the neo-cons say about McCain's record, it screams to the American public that he knows how to get along with both sides of the aisle and can stand firm on his personal political platform.

Am I the only one that noticed that Bill Clinton called Sen. Clinton and Sen. McCain close “friends” on purpose? I think Bill and Hillary know that if McCain becomes the Rep. nominee, that Clinton doesn’t stand a chance. McCain may not have the hard core conservative base behind him right now (and Bill is trying to portray him as a liberal with his comment in hopes of crushing his Florida and national candidacy), but with the prospect of Clinton being president, a solid conservative VP, and his direct appeal to moderate Republicans he’ll be able to easily mobilize the entire GOP base to rally behind him. Not to mention the fact that, unlike Hillary, he has MASSIVE appeal to independents. I think the Republicans should be more afraid of Obama (with his same appeal to independents) or even Edwards (with his southern roots), than Clinton, only if, of course, McCain is the nominee; if he’s not, Republicans will lose regardless of the Democratic pick.

John McCain is as two-faced as the come! And, how quickly we forget! In 2000, when he was running for president against George Bush, he couldn't find anything good to say about George Bush (which is understandable, but that's another story) and since I was a Republican at that time, I voted for him.

As soon as George Bush won the election, John McCain didn't even wait for the ink to dry, he jumped over to George Bush's camp and was practically kissing his feet! I wouldn't vote for him if he was the last candidate on earth!
